White Lotus star Theo James has starred alongside Stephen Fry in a darkly satirical short film.
White Lotus fans were in a frenzy over Theo James in his latest role after he starred in a video by ocean conservation charity Blue Marine Foundation.
The film highlights the environmentally destructive epidemic of bottom trawling – where heavy fishing nets are dragged across the bottom of the ocean killing everything in its path.
Theo plays a dinner guest who orders what he thinks is a responsibly sourced fish dish, until Stephen Fry, playing a refined but unsettling head waiter, delivers a dramatic twist.
A large net of bycatch as a result of bottom trawling proceeds to drop from above onto Theo’s head.
The release of the film coincides with the UK government’s announcement of plans to ban bottom trawling in 41 protected areas across English waters.
The film was described by the Blue Marine Foundation as “gut wrenching”, with a “shocking” ending.
Theo said of making the film: “As a keen diver I’ve long been captivated by the ocean and been horrified by the impact humans are having on it.
“Having had a load of bycatch dumped on me, it really drove home just how grotesque and devastating the practice of bottom trawling is.
“It was deeply unsettling but I was glad to do it if it helps drive real change.”
The video was shared on the charity’s Instagram account and viewers flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.
Viscountessnoma shared: “Brilliant message. I knew I liked Theo James for a reason.
“Celebrities who use their platform to raise awareness on such critical issues. We are destroying the very life line that is keeping us alive.
“Thank you all who were involved in bringing this to light.”
