What is salmonella infection?
People with salmonella infection often suffer diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps after getting in contact with infected animals, their feces, or their environment or eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water.
Tomatoes sold in 14 U.S. states have been recalled over concerns of possible salmonella contamination.
Two different companies that used the same supplier issued the recalls, which were each published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Why you should care:
Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections in the United States every year, and recent outbreaks have been tied to sources such as cucumbers, eggs, unpasteurized milk, fresh basil, and most recently, backyard chickens.
Most people infected with salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the bacteria – developing common symptoms like diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The illness, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the FDA.
However, some people at risk can become seriously ill, including babies and children under 5, adults 65 and older, and those with a weakened immune system.
What you can do:
Consumers who have purchased the recalled tomatoes are urged not to consume them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund – or discard them.
