Promoting her new Netflix special PostMortem, Silverman appeared on Where Everybody Knows Your Name and revealed she had to lie to then-boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel to keep the video a surprise. The clip, which aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live as a birthday prank, became one of YouTube’s earliest viral hits.
Silverman said the idea came from Jimmy Kimmel Live! writers Tony Barbieri and Sal Iacono, Kimmel’s cousin. While touring in Miami, where Matt Damon lived, she arranged to film the segment.
Silverman recalled, “We wrote the song, like, in a fury,” and recorded it in a hotel studio. Damon joined the shoot for just three hours before leaving for his daughter’s Halloween pageant. The entire video was shot across four locations in a rushed but well-coordinated session.
The gag worked as a surprise for Kimmel, who saw the video live on his show. Silverman said, “I think he acted mad because he felt like he needed to, but he loved it.” She remembered telling him to keep expectations low before the reveal. The video’s success led to attempts to replicate its virality, but Silverman noted, “That’s not something you can make.”
The feud it played on was a long-running joke between Kimmel and Damon. Kimmel ended many shows with, “Apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time.” When Damon began engaging with the joke, the nightly bit turned into an elaborate back-and-forth. Kimmel later released his own parody, “I’m F—ing Ben Affleck,” featuring celebrities like Brad Pitt and Robin Williams, making it another viral sensation.
