The Philadelphia Phillies are only three years removed from the Fall Classic, when they lost in six games to the Houston Astros. Since then, the core of Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos has not been able to reach the World Series.

Schwarber’s contract is expiring, and with no evidence of extension talks, the Phillies may look to revamp their roster.

Schwarber will be 33 years old by the time next season begins, and the slugger’s numbers have only increased since joining up with former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Harper in Philadelphia. Schwarber had never hit 40 or more home runs in a season until his first in Philadelphia in 2022. Since then, Schwarber has hit 47 and 38 in back-to-back seasons and is off to a hot start with seven home runs entering Tuesday.

Almost strictly slotting into the Phillies’ lineup as the designated hitter last season and the beginning of the current season, Schwarber will likely be targeted by teams in search of the power and danger he can bring to a lineup, and he is lining up for a sizeable payday this winter.

According to MLB Insider Robert Murray from Fansided there is “no evidence” the Phillies have approached Schwarber about a potential extension. Murray would also report the most likely scenario is for Schwarber to hit free agency this winter, stating it is a “big mistake” that the Phillies have not ignited extension talks.

Schwarber earned his current four-year, $49 million contract from the Phillies following a rebound season with the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox, for whom he hit 32 home runs combined. While the length of his next contract may not be as long, the bomber will likely have earned a higher annual salary after a dominant four seasons in Philadelphia.

Schwarber could still find himself in red pinstripes next season, but the other suitors will be doing everything in their power to sway him to their city. The Toronto Blue Jays have missed out on plenty of high-value free agents the past two seasons, and with their link to Pete Alonso last winter, Schwarber may be at the top of their list to bring north of the border.
