Nunes ends Hall of Fame speech with promise: ‘I’m gonna get my belt back’

Amanda Nunes is the undisputed women’s GOAT in mixed martial arts (MMA) and didn’t need last night’s UFC Hall of Fame induction to convince anyone. But she did use the stage to prepare everyone for the next chapter in her fighting career.

Nunes has been signalling a comeback for months now, and ended up in the cage facing off with new women’s bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison when “Judo Kayla” won the title at UFC 316. The two vowed to fight each other next, and now “The Lioness” has doubled down during her Hall of Fame inductee speech.

“I’m gonna get my belt back again, and I’m gonna come back here [and] keep making history,” Nunes declared. “This is what I was born for. This is what I come here to do. So I’m gonna keep doing it. And I see you guys soon. We’re going to celebrate together. And new!”

Nunes isn’t just interested in fighting Harrison. She’s made it clear that she intends to defend the belt as long as possible. But first she’ll have to take it off Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist whose biggest struggles in the UFC have been around making weight.

Harrison’s weight cuts are so gnarly that she recently said only God was capable of taking the last few pounds off her. That makes us wonder how long she plans to stick around. She’s won the belt. Defending against Nunes would lock her in as one of the greats. Is there all that much for her to do after that?

“The Lioness” has said she’s ready to come back for the end of the year, and she continues to look extremely fired up about a return to action after two years away from the sport. The UFC’s 2025 schedule is filling up fast, so we’ll keep you informed on when this fight gets locked in.
