Don Sweeney said four days ago that he didn’t think the Bruins and Morgan Geekie were on the doorstep of a new deal, but that things could change with one phone call.
That phone call appears to have come on Sunday.
Geekie and the Bruins agreed to a six-year contract extension with an annual cap hit of $5.5 million, the team announced.
The 26-year-old, who expressed desire to remain with the Bruins at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.
For Sweeney, he never doubted a deal would get done.
“We have zero issues in the fact that we’re gonna find a deal at some point in time,” the Bruins general manager said last week at his pre-draft availability.
The Bruins will now head into free agency on Tuesday with $16.64 million available to spend on several roster spots. They have the 15th most cap space available, but the fewest players (30) signed, so Sweeney will have work to do.
Geekie potted 33 goals and 24 assists — both a career high — in 77 games for the Bruins during the 2024-25 season. Twenty-six of his goals came on 5-on-5.
The forward was a bright spot for the Bruins during a tough season that saw the Original Six team miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. After being healthy scratched and having his name in trade rumors, Geekie found strong chemistry with David Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm and became an integral part to the offense.
