CNN
 —

Federal regulators have given SpaceX the green light for another test flight of Starship, the most powerful launch vehicle ever constructed, after two explosive mishaps earlier this year rained debris near islands in the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans.

The Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches, said Thursday that SpaceX can move forward with its next launch attempt while an investigation into the vehicle’s most recent failure, during which it exploded near the Bahamas, is ongoing, the agency confirmed to CNN.

Regulators decided to allow the company to move forward with another test mission, referred to as Flight 9, after determining that SpaceX has met “all of the rigorous safety, environmental and other licensing requirements.”

The update from the FAA comes after the agency issued a launch license on May 15 for the upcoming test flight.

That license approval was a significant milestone and win for SpaceX because it marked the final step in a long-awaited approval process. The company had for years sought to expand the maximum number of launches it can carry out annually from its facilities in South Texas — home to Starship manufacturing and operations facilities.

“The FAA approved license modifications for the SpaceX Starship Flight 9 mission,” the FAA said in a May 15 statement. “The approval includes final action allowing SpaceX to increase Starship operations from five up to 25 per year at Boca Chica, Texas.”

At the time, the FAA also noted that it would expand the size of the hazard zones — or keep-out areas for aircraft — that will be locked down during the next Starship flight.

The agency said it made the change in response to the two prior mishaps, Flight 7 in January and Flight 8 in March, which signaled “a greater probability of failure” in the FAA’s calculations.

SpaceX for the first time also intends to attempt to reuse a Super Heavy rocket booster on Flight 9. Super Heavy is the largest piece of the Starship launch system and consists of a 232-foot (71-meter) steel cylinder, fuel tanks, and all 33 rocket engines that give the initial burst of thrust at liftoff.

SpaceX has so far safely recovered three Super Heavy boosters after launch with the goal of refurbishing and reusing the rocket parts to drive down costs.

Expanding hazard areas

The FAA said it would expand the size of the Starship hazard area — which is intended to keep aircraft and other vehicles out of the launch system’s flight path — from 885 nautical miles (1,018 miles) mapped out in earlier documents to 1,600 nautical miles (1,841 miles) for the Flight 9 test launch.

The expanded keep-out zone is expected to affect as many as 175 flights, with an expected average delay time of 40 minutes, according to the FAA. The agency estimates such delays cost travelers about $50 per hour and cost passenger airlines as much as $100.80 per minute, or $6,048.00 per hour per delayed flight.

“To minimize disruption,” the document states, “the launch window has been scheduled outside peak transit periods.”

SpaceX has not yet publicly announced a target launch time for Flight 9.

The FAA also maps out debris response areas where it believes pieces of the vehicle might land if it explodes midflight.

SpaceX said after both the Flight 7 and Flight 8 mishaps that debris mostly stayed within such areas.

But in January, pieces of the failed Starship vehicle from Flight 7 notably wound up strewn across the islands of Turks and Caicos. There was also one report of property damage: A piece of debris struck a car on the island of South Caicos, the FAA confirmed at the time.

Debris from the failed March test flight also landed near the Bahamas.

“The FAA is in close contact and collaboration with the United Kingdom, Turks & Caicos Islands, Bahamas, Mexico, and Cuba as the agency continues to monitor SpaceX’s compliance with all public safety and other regulatory requirements,” the agency said in a Thursday statement.

“SpaceX is required to update its Flight Safety Analysis to account for all outcomes of previously flown flights including mishap events and to calculate and establish hazards areas,” the statement reads.

There have been no reports of injuries related to Starship’s prior mishaps.

In a January statement to CNN, the FAA said that it requires SpaceX to map out “hazard areas sufficient to ensure that the probability of casualty to a member of the public on land or on board a maritime vessel does not exceed one in one million.”

Starship and the big picture

While the company has faced backlash for its recent test flight failures and over CEO Elon Musk’s ties to the current presidential administration, the Starship vehicle’s eventual success is considered crucial to NASA’s goals.

The space agency has already agreed to pay SpaceX up to $4 billion to carry astronauts down to the lunar surface on as many as two moon landing missions slated for later this decade.

SpaceX’s partnership with NASA could also expand if the agency decides to do away with its own Space Launch System rocket, or SLS, as the Trump administration has suggested. The SLS has long elicited criticism due to its price tag, which could be between $2 billion and $4 billion per launch, according to a 2023 government accountability report.

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with the Orion spacecraft atop the rocket is pictured as it sat on the mobile launcher at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida ahead of the Artemis I mission on August 26, 2022.

The White House’s preliminary budget document, which was issued May 2, recommended doing away with the SLS rocket after three flights.

Phasing out the SLS rocket would likely leave Starship as the only option for getting astronauts into deep space — whether to the moon or Mars, which is the destination of choice for Musk and Jared Isaacman, a Musk confidant who Trump tapped to lead NASA. (The space agency is still awaiting the Senate’s final confirmation for Isaacman’s nomination.)

SpaceX has long advertised Starship as offering game-changing affordability for its size.

Musk has said the price per test flight has been about $50 million to $100 million. The prototypes flown so far, however, have only traveled on a suborbital trajectory, and they have not been equipped with some features that will be necessary for crewed missions, such as life support systems.

SpaceX must also hash out how to refuel the vehicle as it sits in orbit around Earth, a procedure that will be necessary for journeys that travel deeper into space.

Starship’s development process has sparked controversy in part because the company is employing an engineering approach it refers to as “rapid iterative development.”

The philosophy emphasizes launching relatively cheap prototypes during the development process, aiming to quickly pinpoint and fix design issues. The method stands in contrast to the one NASA embraced for SLS, for example, which focused on extensive ground testing that all but guarantees success on the first launch attempt.

Because of its unique development approach, SpaceX has been known to embrace fiery mishaps, while emphasizing that even failed test flights help engineers improve Starship’s design — perhaps quicker and more cheaply than if the company employed alternative engineering approaches.

“With a test like this, success comes from what we learn,” the company has frequently said in statements issued after Starship flight failures.

Such rapid and frequent testing, however, has led to high-profile, explosive failures throughout the company’s history that have long served as a rallying cry for detractors.

I rewatched ‘Legally Blonde’ on Prime Video — here’s why Elle Woods is more relevant than ever

In a world full of mean girls, be an Elle Woods — not a Regina George. As the upcoming “Elle” series on Prime Video prepares to take us back to Elle’s high school days, it’s worth remembering why “Legally Blonde” remains a standout in the crowded field of ‘90s and early 2000s It Girls.

Cher Horowitz, Summer Roberts, Blair Waldorf, Elle Woods: These teen and young adult queens strutted through pop culture hallways with glossy hair and to-die-for wardrobes. But only one of them climbed the hallowed Harvard Law steps (“What, like it’s hard?”)

BRINGING OUR BOOM

Oklahoma has 110 home runs this season, becoming the first program to hit at least 100 home runs in six straight years. Gabbie Garcia leads the way with 18, while 13 Sooners have at least two.

MAGIC NUMBER

Oklahoma is 41-0 when scoring at least six runs. The Sooners earned three run-rule wins on the weekend during regionals, bringing Oklahoma to 22 such victories this season.

RANKED GAMES

The Sooners have played 24 games against ranked teams this season, going 20-6 in such contests. The Sooners earned three sweeps against top 15 programs, including a sweep against No. 3/2 Texas – OU’s first ever three game sweep against a top five team.

The Sooners have outscored top 25 teams, 157-108. Freshman Gabbie Garcia has paced the Sooners with nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 82 at-bats against ranked teams this season. Sam Landry has fanned 81 batters and gone 10-4 with a 2.28 ERA in her 18 appearances against ranked teams.

ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS

The Sooners have a number of players in the top ten among active leaders in a variety of statistical categories, particularly between the arms of Isabella Smith and Sam Landry

-Wins: Sam Landry (first in DI – 85), Isabella Smith (second in DI – 79)

-Innings pitched: Isabella Smith (sixth in DI – 649.3)

-Appearances: Sam Landry (sixth in DI and NCAA – 149), Isabella Smith (seventh in DI and NCAA – 140)

-Strikeouts: Isabella Smith (fifth in DI and 15th in NCAA – 682)

-Home runs: Cydney Sanders (7th in DI – 56)

-Walks: Cydney Sanders (4th in DI – 152)

THE GIFT OF GAB

Freshman infielder Gabbie Garcia is tied for 6th among all freshmen in Division with 18 home runs. She was named D1Softball Freshman of the Week March 11 and April 8 as well SEC Player of the Week March 18. Earlier this season she became the first OU freshman since Jocelyn Alo to homer in five consecutive games. April 30 she was named to the top spot of the Softball America Shortstops rankings.

AND IT’S OUT OF THE PARK(ER)!

Sophomore Ella Parker is heating up over the past three weekends, having hit safely in 13 of the last 15 games. She’s homered in six of the last ten games, hitting half of her total for the year beginning in the Texas series.

BALANCE IS KEY

One of the greatest assets of the OU offense this year has been its balance. The Sooners have six players with at least 11 home runs, with Gabbie Garcia pacing the way with 18 and Kasidi Pickering with 17.

SYD & CYD

Sydney Barker and Cydney Sanders have combined for six of OU’s 12 RBIs in the SEC Tournament.

PERFORMING UNDER THE BRIGHT LIGHTS

Nelly McEnroe-Marinas has hit 11 of her 14 home runs in SEC play. She’s had a multi-home run series against South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi State, and also homered against Alabama and Texas. In total she’s homered against every SEC team OU has faced this season outside of Tennessee and Florida.

BIG BATS

OU has homered in 51 of 55 games this season. Oklahoma has hit five home runs three times, while setting a season high with six homers against Arkansas May 9. Two different players have had streaks of four games in a row with a home run or better.

FRESHIES

Oklahoma freshman have combined to hit 50 of Oklahoma’s 110 home runs, paced by 18 from Gabbie Garcia and 14 from Nelly McEnroe-Marinas. Five different OU freshmen have hit at least two home runs.

NATIONAL NODS

Senior pitcher Sam Landry and sophomore outfielder Kasidi Pickering were both named to the USA Collegiate Softball Player of the Year Top 25 list.

ALL-SEC SOONERS

The Oklahoma Sooners made some noise in the all-tournament team listing. Six Sooners combined for nine total honors. Sam Landry was named SEC Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-SEC and to the all-defensive squad. Kasidi Pickering and Nelly McEnroe-Marinas made the first team. Gabbie Garcia was tabbed to the second team and all-defensive squad, while Ailana Agbayani was also a second team pick. Head Coach Patty Gasso was named SEC Coach of the Year in her first season in the league.

HAWAII FIVE-0

Junior second baseman Ailana Agbayani is coming off her first SEC Player of the Week honor April 29 after hitting .750 (6-for-8) with a grand slam, three runs five RBIs and two walks. Agbayani tied a career high with five RBIs in OU’s 7-6 win against No. 3/2 Texas Friday, April 25. She was also named Softball America Star of the Week that same week. All four of her home runs have either come against ranked teams or in postseason play.

IT’S PERFECT!

The Sooners have spun two perfect games this year between the arms of Isabella Smith and Sam Landry. Smith posted a five-inning perfect game in an 8-0 win against Cal Baptist in her first-ever start with OU. She became the only pitcher in program history to post a perfect game in a debut. Landry followed that up with a five-inning perfect game at No. 23/24 Baylor later in February.

ROLL CALL!

Oklahoma Softball set program records for series attendance and single game attendance for a regular season series at Love’s Field during the sweep of Texas April 25-27. A total of 13,734 fans saw the series, while game three’s attendance reached a record, 4,609 at Love’s.

RECORD SWEEP

OU has swept four SEC series this year (South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Texas), with the latest being a record-setting sweep against No. 3/2 Texas April 25-27. OU’s series sweep against the Longhorns marked the program’s first-ever three-game sweep against a top-five team.

JERSEY COMBOS

OU has worn five different jersey combinations this season and the records in each are in (note credit to Sooner Tracker).

-White jersey/crimson pants: 10-2

-White jersey/white pants: 8-2

-Crimson jersey/crimson pants: 12-2

-Crimson jersey/white pants: 4-0

-Anthracite: 13-1

CYDNEY SLAMDERS

Cydney Sanders has played in the most games among active Sooners, logging 228 for her career and 167 for her time at Oklahoma. Sanders’ 56 career homers features 33 during her time in Norman, two of which came in the same inning against St. Thomas April 3. She was the first Sooner to do so since Alynah Torres homered twice in the same frame against UT Arlington March 20, 2024. Sanders also surpassed 100 career walks at OU, standing at 109 right now.

USA TEAM

Associate head coaches Jennifer Rocha and JT Gasso were both tabbed to the U.S. Softball Women’s National Team Coaching Pool as announced Monday, May 5. Also on the national scale, OU head coach Patty Gasso was named United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee College Coach of the Year April 29.

SEC COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM

Junior lefty Kierston Deal was named to the SEC Softball Community Service Team Tuesday, May 6, becoming the first-ever Sooner Softball player to take home the award in the program’s first year in the league. The honor is given to student-athletes that have given back to their community with efforts off the field. In the circle Deal has spun two complete games against top-10 teams this year, doing so in the Saturday game against No. 10/9 Tennessee (7-1 win) and No. 3/2 Texas (7-2).

21 IS NO. 1

Sooner righty Sam Landry was picked first overall in the first-ever Athletes Unlimited Softball League Draft Saturday, May 3. Landry is set to play for the AUSL Volts, joining OU alumnae Tiare Jennings on the team.

Predictions, odds for Panthers vs. Stallions

0

play

The Michigan Panthers and Birmingham Stallions already have clinched playoff berths and are set to meet in the USFL conference championship game because of it.

UFL fans will get an early preview of that matchup as the two contenders jockey for playoff seeding in a critical Week 9 contest.

The Panthers (6-2) currently have the inside track for the No. 1 seed. They can clinch it with a win over the Stallions (5-3), over whom they currently hold a one-game advantage in the standings.

However, a Birmingham win would complicate the race. The Stallions already beat the Panthers 21-12 in Week 2, so a season sweep of their rival would give them a tiebreaker edge entering the final week of the season.

Will the Panthers be able to wrap up the top seed, or will they continue to struggle to knock off the three-time reigning champion Stallions? Here’s a look at the odds for the contest, as well as a prediction for the game.

Michigan Panthers vs. Birmingham Stallions odds, moneyline, over/under

The Panthers are slight underdogs against the Stallions in UFL Week 9, according to the BetMGM UFL odds. Here is a look at the spread, moneyline and point total for the game.

  • Spread: Stallions (-1.5)
  • Moneyline: Stallions (-120); Stallions (+100)
  • Over/under: 44.5

Panthers vs. Stallions prediction

  • Panthers 29, Stallions 26

Michigan has faced Birmingham four times since the USFL and XFL merged for the 2024 season. The Panthers have not won any of those games. It may be time for that history to change.

The Panthers have arguably the UFL’s best offense, as they are averaging a league-high 26.4 points per game this season. Impressively, they have scored at least 26 points in all but one game this season. That was the Week 2 matchup with the Stallions during which they scored just 12 points.

Some may view that as a sign Birmingham is built to stop Michigan. In reality, the Panthers were mixing and matching their quarterbacks at that point in the season, which didn’t allow either Bryce Perkins or Danny Etling to get fully into rhythm.

Since then, the Panthers have largely stuck to one signal-caller playing the entire game at quarterback. That allowed Perkins to emerge as a star and a legitimate UFL MVP candidate. He might not play in Week 9 because of an ankle injury, but Etling has proven to be a capable replacement when asked to operate as the team’s starting quarterback.

If Etling can perform well out of the gate, it will be hard for Birmingham’s defense to contain Michigan’s offense. That will make it imperative for the Stallions to score often, which they are certainly capable of doing.

Despite being down to their third- and fourth-string quarterbacks, the Stallions have scored 26-plus points in three consecutive games. J’Mar Smith has performed particularly well since coming out of retirement and completed 14 of 27 passes for 262 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Birmingham’s Week 9 loss to the St. Louis Battlehawks.

With that in mind, this game figures to be far more of an offensive shootout than the lower-scoring battle between the teams in Week 2. The Panthers should have a chance to emerge victoriously, wrap up the No. 1 seed in the USFL conference and give themselves some confidence as they prepare to face the Stallions in the preseason.

How to watch Michigan Panthers vs. Birmingham Stallions

MLB Scores: Dodgers 7, Mets 5—A Marathon of Horrors

0

The Mets dropped the series opener to the Dodgers 7-5 in 13 innings on a very cool and rainy Friday night at Citi Field. Tonight’s contest not only featured a one hour and 38 minute rain delay, there were also multiple plays I have never seen in a baseball game before (derogatory).

The game started out uneventfully enough. Both starting pitchers worked around a walk in the first inning. The Mets were able to erase a one-out walk by Mookie Betts on one of Francisco Alvarez’s patented back-pick throws to first base. Clayton Kershaw struggled to find the strike zone early in his second start back and issued a four-pitch walk to Francisco Lindor to lead off the bottom of the first, but Starling Marte flew out and then Juan Soto grounded into a double play to end the inning. After Brandon Nimmo robbed Will Smith of a hit with yet another fantastic leaping grab against the wall, Kershaw bounced back to pitch a 1-2-3 second.

The third inning is when things started to get weird. Michael Conforto—playing his first game back at Citi Field since leaving the Mets—singled to lead off the inning. Tommy Edman then popped up for the second out, but Griffin Canning then walked Shohei Ohtani. Mookie Betts then hit a fly ball to deep right-center on which Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto collided to knock the ball out of Taylor’s glove. Taylor somehow managed to miraculously recover and make the catch with his bare hand and both runners tagged up. The Mets challenged the play, arguing that Conforto left the base too early to tag up. But the safe call was upheld because the rule states that you can tag up when the ball first touches the glove, not when the catch is made.

After that bizarre play is when the rain began falling heavily and the tarp went on the field for over an hour and a half. The delay was long enough that neither Canning nor Kershaw reappeared and the game then became a battle of the bullpens. When play resumed, Max Kranick entered the game, inheriting runners at second and third with two outs and a 3-1 count on Freddie Freeman. Jeff McNeil also came in the game in left field to replace Brandon Nimmo, who left the game with a stiff neck. Freeman walked and that base on balls was added to Canning’s ledger. One could argue that the better strategy for Carlos Mendoza would have been to bring in a stopper who misses more bats and then give Kranick a clean inning for long relief. Kranick did get the ground balls he needed, but they did not result in outs. Will Smith had hit a sharp grounder to short that Lindor was able to keep on the slick infield, but was unable to throw Smith out. Michael Conforto scored on the play to put the Dodgers on the board. Teoscar Hernández followed with a sharp grounder that went under Baty’s glove, scoring two more runs to make it 3-0 Dodgers. It wasn’t an easy play, but it was a ball which Baty probably should have at least kept on the infield. Kranick stopped the bleeding there, but all three runs were charged to Canning.

The Mets scratched back to within a run against Matt Sauer working in long relief for the Dodgers. Brett Baty hit a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the third to put the Mets on the board. In the fourth, Starling Marte led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Marte then advanced to third on a groundout by Soto. In the second unusual play of the evening, Pete Alonso then flew out to right field deep enough that it seemed almost certain Marte would score. Instead, Teoscar Hernández made a perfect throw from the outfield to gun Marte down at home. However, Marte was awarded home plate because the third base umpire called interference on Max Muncy—not for making contact with Marte as he tried to tag up, but for blocking Marte’s line of sight to right field to see when to tag up. That run ended up looming extremely large.

The Dodgers added two runs against José Buttó in the top of the fifth—once again with two outs. After retiring the first two batters, Buttó walked Will Smith and then hit Teoscar Hernández with a pitch. That loss of control came back to bite him, as back-to-back singles by Max Muncy and Andy Pages plated two runs to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 5-2. There the score would remain until the ninth. José Castillo had the best outing as a Met, striking out Michael Conforto to end the rally in the fifth and retiring all five batters he faced. Ryne Stanek also disposed of both batters he faced and Génesis Cabrera contributed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Meanwhile, Ben Casparius followed up Matt Sauer’s three innings of long relief for the Dodgers with three of his own, which were brilliant. He allowed only one baserunner and struck out six batters.

But the tenor of the game changed very quickly in the ninth thanks to a meltdown by major Dodgers bullpen offseason acquisition Tanner Scott. Starling Marte led off the inning with a single. Soto then popped out to short, but Alonso walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Jeff McNeil then delivered a huge hit—a two-run triple into the left field corner to bring the Mets within a run and put the tying run 90 feet away. Tyrone Taylor then laced a single to tie the game at five runs apiece. Scott was pulled from the game by Dave Roberts having recorded just one out. He was replaced by Alex Vesia, who came up huge for the Dodgers. He got Francisco Alvarez to fly out for the second out, allowed a single to Brett Baty, but then struck out Luisangel Acuña to send the game to extra innings.

Both the Mets and Dodgers pulled off Houdini acts in the tenth to keep the game tied. Edwin Díaz hit Freddie Freeman with a pitch and walked Will Smith to load the bases with nobody out in the top of the tenth. But then Teoscar Hernández grounded into a force out at home on which Pete Alonso exorcised his demons by making a good throw home. Díaz then induced a double play grounder from Max Muncy to end the inning. Vesia stayed in the game to begin the bottom of the tenth and struck out Francisco Lindor and then made way for Lou Trivino, who hit Starling Marte with a pitch to begin his outing. Juan Soto then grounded out to first, advancing the runners to second and third. Pete Alonso then gave one a ride, but Andy Pages made the catch on the warning track to end the inning.

Reed Garrett delivered a clutch 1-2-3 top of the 11th to keep the Dodgers off the board yet again. But the Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the eleventh against Anthony Banda on a pair of walks—one intentional and one not—and failed to score. Luis García, the Dodgers’ eighth pitcher of the night, went to 3-0 on Luisangel Acuña, teetering right on the edge of walking in the winning run. Acuña took a strike, but then swung at a borderline 3-1 pitch and grounded out to third to send the game to the 12th.

Because José Azócar pinch ran for Pete Alonso as the ghost runner in the 11th, Luis Torrens came in the game at first base; it was the first time Torrens had played first base since 2021. Reed Garrett was nails again in the top of the 12th, retiring the Dodgers 1-2-3 once more. The Mets continued to invent new ways to not score in extra innings as well. In the bottom of the 12th, after Lindor was intentionally walked and Marte put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, Luis Torrens came to bat for the first time in the game. And what did he do? You guessed it! He grounded into a double play.

The Mets used the last pitcher available in their bullpen in Huascar Brazobán in the top of the 13th and that is when the dam finally broke. Teoscar Hernández doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and score the ghost runner Will Smith to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead. Hyeseong Kim then singled to advance Hernández to third. In about the half dozenth weird tag play of the game Andy Pages flew out to right to score Hernández on a sacrifice fly, but Kim was doubled off first base. Because Hernández had to look around Brett Baty as he was tagging up, the Dodgers dugout gave the third base umpire the business, wondering why he didn’t also call Baty for obstruction like they did Muncy earlier in the game. Nevertheless, the Dodgers were now up 7-5.

The Mets went down meekly in the bottom of the 13th as García took the mound for his third inning of work. McNeil, Taylor, and Alvarez were retired in order, putting our collective suffering to an end. Baseball is stupid. It is after 1:00am. I am exhausted.

Winners of inaugural Grayson Murray Be Kind to One Another Legacy Award announced

0

MERRIAM, Kan.,
The AdventHealth Championship announced the winners of the inaugural Grayson Murray Be Kind to One Another Legacy Award: longtime Korn Ferry Tour player Josh Teater is the winner of the player/caddie award, and Susie Gurley the winner of the community award.

Winners were selected from more than 25 nominations for this first-time award. Teater was nominated by several fellow caddies and players for this award that recognizes those who embody the spirit of the late 2023 AdventHealth Championship winner, Grayson Murray. Murray, who was open about his personal experience with anxiety, depression and addiction, tragically took his own life in May 2024 at the young age of 30.

“Day in and day out, Josh Teater has genuine conversations to his peers and the staff of the KF Tour,” said nominator, Chris Erwin. “He makes a conscious effort to have a positive energy level every single day with a goal of sharing that with others through actions and words.”

The professional golf community and international sports world was shocked and saddened by Murray’s passing one year after his triumphant 2023 win in Kansas City. His willingness to speak candidly on these important topics and his personal generosity to help others is the inspiration for this new award.

“This is an honor and total surprise,” said Teater. “It’s a wonderful feeling and deeply meaningful to know I’ve had a positive impact on others.”

The community award was given to Susie Gurley, creator of the “Just a Mom” podcast. Susie became a mental health advocate after her youngest son, Will, emerged as a teen spokesperson about his battle with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. What began as the self- described “darkest period” of her life, became a calling to support other parents of children who struggle with mental illness.

“It’s truly humbling, but it’s not why I do what I do,” said Gurley. “I am a Christian and I think God uniquely positioned me to deliver the stories and move the ball forward a little bit. We are not meant to do this by ourselves. We are not alone, there is hope.”

Both award winners stood out to the selection committee for their selfless, caring nature and willingness to help others. Teater even had a personal connection to Grayson, having played practice rounds of golf with him in the past.

“Josh embodies the spirit of this award through his kindness, humility, and the genuine care he shows to everyone around him,” said the Murrays. “He leads with compassion, treats everyone with respect, and reminds us all of the power of simply being kind.”

“Susie has turned her son’s challenges into purpose, using her voice to raise awareness and remind others they are never alone. Her courage, compassion, and commitment to mental health advocacy reflect the very heart of this award.”

Terry and Eric Murray were in attendance to present the first-annual Grayson Murray Be Kind to One Another Legacy Award during the closing ceremonies of the 2025 AdventHealth Championship on Sunday, May 18, at Blue Hills Country Club.

Teater and Gurley with the Murrays and the 2025 AdventHealth Championship winner S.H. Kim (Kim Seong-hyeon).

“We are so proud to highlight someone from Kansas City and someone on Tour who make it part of their personal mission to be on the lookout for the people around them who need a kind word or some encouragement,” said Sam Huenergardt, AdventHealth Mid-America Region president and CEO. “Both Josh and Susie demonstrate that we all have the capacity and time to make a difference for everyone around us.”

Just a Mom Podcast

Susie Stapp Gurley was born and raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She married her college sweetheart, Dan Gurley, shortly after graduating from TCU with a degree in advertising and public relations. In her first career, Susie worked in college admissions and academic advising. Simultaneously she pursued a master’s degree from The University of Central Missouri in sociology and then worked for the Sedgwick County, KS Department of Aging as a case worker. Susie stepped away from the professional world in 1997 to become a stay-at-home mom. She spent the majority of the last 25 years as a wife, mother and volunteer, primarily in her church and her three children’s schools and activities. Susie became a mental health advocate after her youngest son emerged as a teen spokesperson about his battle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. In 2018, at the age of 15, Will, founded the You Matter Festival, a musical festival promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Will shared his personal mental health struggles with the 1,000-person crowd, which started his role as a local KC teen advocate for mental health. Because of Will’s involvement, Susie recorded a video #ZeroReasonsWhy (https://zeroreasonswhy.org), a Kansas City area organization working to end teen suicide in the Johnson County, Kansas area. This video was viewed over 10,000 times, which was the impetus of the Just A Mom podcast. Susie decided that she needed to follow the brave trail blazed by her son and become and outspoken advocate for parents of children who struggle with mental illness. Susie served as the executive director of the You Mader Festival and on the Friends of Johnson County Mental Health Board. Susie has three grown children, two daughters-in-law and a son-in-law. Should head coach also call plays?

0

Tommy: It depends on your coach. There have been coaches at the NFL and college levels that have excelled and won championships as a head coach and playcaller, and there are those that have been both and struggled mightily, but did better once they delegated those duties elsewhere. You have to treat it on a case-by-case basis, and ultimately the head coach needs to decide what’s best for the team: Him calling plays, or him focusing on oversight of everything. Brian Schottenheimer will start out as both for the Cowboys in his first season, and it may stay that way throughout the entire course of his tenure. That said, he could also realize at some point along the way that it’d be better for everyone if someone else called the plays so he could focus on everybody. Either way, there is a chance to be successful and win games, so I don’t think there’s any clear-cut yes or no answer to whether or not head coaches should also be playcallers simply because it’s so different for everyone.
