Brewers 6, Pirates 5: Milwaukee’s offense finally delivers

0

play

PITTSBURGH – A cursory glance at the box score on Sunday, May 25 will show the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, at PNC Park.

But looking beyond the numbers, manager Pat Murphy saw something he really liked.

“There were remnants of that displaced edge,” he said, harkening back to his statements after a loss to the Chicago Cubs early in the month. And since that series the Brewers have indeed been up and down due to myriad injuries, an inconsistent offense and some spotty defense.

But in this one, Milwaukee battled back after it could have easily folded by scoring three times in the eighth inning and ultimately hanging on to win for the first time in 24 opportunities when trailing after seven innings.

BOX SCORE: Brewers 6, Pirates 5

Rookie Caleb Durbin and Brice Turang delivered the decisive blows, but there were others like another rookie, Logan Henderson, and Abner Uribe who stepped forward and helped the Brewers earn a series split with bookend victories in the four-game set

“I mean, we didn’t have to win this game the way it was going,” Murphy continued. Four hits (into the eighth) and three runs in the first and then looking behind us – we’ve seen this a bunch this year. And I was really just, like, sick to my stomach.

“And then, bam, bam, bam. You just knew those guys (would deliver).”

The eighth inning featured several terrific at-bats

Milwaukee scored three times in the first inning off starter Bailey Falter, then managed two singles, two walks and no runs over the next six as Pittsburgh came roaring back to take a 5-3 lead.

With Ryan Borucki on the mound for the eighth, Rhys Hoskins walked and Isaac Collins – who’d had a rough day in left field defensively to that point – doubled.

Sal Frelick flew out to right, leaving the inning to Durbin, who was 0 for 3 to that point but had three hits and reached base all four times up in Saturday’s 2-1 loss.

He fouled off each of Borucki’s first five pitches until the left-hander left his sixth offering out over the plate that he turned on and hit off the wall in left, scoring Hoskins and Collins to tie it up.

“I faced Borucki a couple days ago,” he said. “Saw a lot of sliders, so knew he likes to go to it. Just tried to get it up and luckily was able to get one over the plate, drive it and get those runs in.”

That brought up Turang, who was 1 for his previous 24. He fell behind in the count, 1-2, worked it to 3-2 and then rifled a double down the left-field line on Borucki’s seventh pitch to drive in Durbin with what ended up being the winner.

“It’s big to get that run,” Turang said. “But Durbin to move the chain, those guys to have good at-bats was the reason why I even got an opportunity. They gave me a chance, and I’m happy I delivered for them.”

Indeed, Hoskins and Collins both also delivered positive results in two-strike counts – exactly what needs to happen for an offense that features very little slug.

“It was what was needed,” Murphy said. “We used to be a team that did what was needed, you know? And that’s how we rolled and we played every pitch. It seems like because we haven’t lived up to our own expectations and that we’ve kind of played not to lose instead of just to win.

“Any team in MLB can beat you. We’ve known that. But when you start having expectations of yourself and looking at the pennant race in May, that’s just not the way to do it. It’s hard to escape that. but to see this today gives them a little bit of, ‘Yeah, that’s how we’ve got to play.’

“Hopefully they take from it.”

Logan Henderson keeps answering the bell

Henderson, the right-hander, was in line for the victory after his five-inning, one-run, 89-pitch outing, which would have made him the first pitcher to win each of his first four starts in the majors since Chase Anderson in 2014.

Alas, it wasn’t to be as Nick Mears allowed the Pirates to tie it four batters into the sixth before Jared Koenig surrendered the lead in the seventh.

Even still, Henderson was solid in allowing a pesky Pittsburgh team to score just once on white-hot Oneil Cruz’s leadoff home run in the third – a 122.9-mph missile that was the hardest hit in the Statcast era (since 2015), traveled 432 feet and bounced into the Allegheny River.

Jackson Chourio ran a mile in center to chase down Jared Triolo’s blooper with the bases loaded to keep the Pirates off the board in the second, then Henderson took matters into his own hands in the fifth by first striking out Cruz and then catching Joey Bart looking at a called third to end his day.

“He emptied the tank,” Murphy said. “And that’s on four days’ rest. We could tell from the first changeup he threw, ‘Eh, that’s not normal.’ It took everything he had to get to 89 today. But, yeah, that shows you what he’s about – five innings, bobbed and weaved and didn’t give in. Huge pitch to Cruz, that fastball up.

“I think he was great.”

With six strikeouts, Henderson now has 29 through his first four starts. Only Freddy Peralta (35 in 2018) has recorded more in franchise history.

“There’s always progress to be made, and I’m going to be critical of myself after every outing,” Henderson said. “I feel like there’s a lot that I could do better. But I feel like when I’ve needed to make big pitches in big moments I have, and credit to the guys in the ‘pen, credit to William (Contreras), credit to the bats.

“It’s easy to throw when you have a really good defense behind you. I wanted to give the boys some length today and only got five, but that’s the next step, is being able to go deeper into games. So, there’s definitely progress but more progress to be made.”

Abner Uribe rebounded nicely

Uribe’s previous appearance in the series went miserably, as he surrendered the game-tying homer to Cruz in the ninth and then threw a wild pitch that allowed the winning run to score in the 10th two nights earlier.

It seemed as though things might be heading that way again on Sunday when he took the mound in the eighth.

Tommy Pham lined a leadoff single to center, and then was balked to second. After a strikeout of Jared Triolo the Brewers elected to put Cruz on first rather than allow him to swing away and potentially tie it or put the Pirates in the lead again.

“Who does that?” quipped Murphy. “That’s ridiculous, to face (Andrew McCutchen).”

But Uribe helped himself by quickly spinning, firing and picking Pham off second. He followed by striking out McCutchen, and the stage was then set for Trevor Megill in the ninth.

Megill allowed a two-out infield single and a stolen base left the winning run at the plate in the form of Adam Frazier, who’d logged seven total hits and been on base nine times since Thursday.

He ultimately grounded out routinely to Turang, Megill had his ninth save and the Brewers were spared from going four games under .500 for the first time this season.

“Thinking about your Uribe, that’s gutsy,” Murphy said. “That’s why that kid is, I think, the right person. And then Megill, that was reminiscent of our closers of the past.”

Free MLB home run picks, odds for May 25: Julio Rodriguez among best bets for Sunday HR player props

0

Kyle Schwarber and Aaron Judge both went yard again on Saturday and the MLB home run leaders are sitting on 18 each entering Sunday’s action. However, there’s a considerable difference in the pricing you’ll find on these two sluggers in the latest MLB home run odds. Schwarber is priced at +240 on FanDuel to hit a home run against the Athletics despite a warm day in Sacramento with the wind forecast to blow out, while Judge is +170 to homer on BetMGM at Coors Field. Those two won’t add much juice to your MLB HR picks, but Taylor Ward is creeping up the MLB HR leaderboard with 15 homers and he’s +400 for your MLB home run bets on Sunday. You can also check out our Sunday MLB RBI picks and Dodgers vs. Mets Sunday Night Baseball picks and have action all day.

Any first-time users interested in putting together MLB home run picks today can also enhance their experience with the latest DraftKings promo code or Fanatics Sportsbook promo code, just to name a few. With MLB props available for almost every player in every game at sportsbooks, SportsLine’s proven computer model can help you find value to add to your MLB home run picks and betting strategy.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every MLB game 10,000 times. It’s up 27.75 units on its MLB HR picks during the last 47 days after hitting one MLB home run prop in four of the last five days. Now, the model and SportsLine’s team of Data Scientists have revealed their projections for some of the most-bet MLB HR prop bets on Saturday. You can find even more picks in their daily blog.

Best MLB home run picks for Sunday, May 25:

Taylor Ward, Angels (+400)

Ward extended a franchise record for most consecutive games with an extra-base hit to 10 with a double on Saturday and he’s homered in seven of his last 12 games entering Sunday. He’s tied for fifth in baseball with his 15 HRs this season and the MLB weather forecast bodes well for him to add to that total on Sunday.

Expect temperatures in the low-70s in Anaheim tonight and for wins blowing out at nearly 10 mph to left field, which should aid the right-handed slugger. Meanwhile, Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera has given up at least one home run in six of his seven starts this year. DraftKings and BetMGM both have Ward at +400 in their MLB HR props.

Max Muncy, Dodgers (+540)

Muncy has four 30-homer seasons to his name but has only hit three home runs over his first 48 games in 2025. So we’re taking the buy-low approach here on a proven slugger. He has a .772 OPS against right-handed pitching this season against a .302 OPS against lefties and he had a .891 OPS against righties in 2024.

The Dodgers will visit the Mets for Sunday Night Baseball and temperatures are expected to be in the mid-60s with double-digit wins blowing out into the right-field corner at Citi Field. That bodes well for left-handed power and Muncy has been on base three of the five times he’s faced Mets righty Kodai Senga in his career. FanDuel has the best price here and they’re also offering this incentive for first-time users with this FanDuel promo code.

Julio Rodriguez, Mariners (+370)

The 2022 American League Rookie of the Year is already a two-time MLB all-star and he’s already launched nine home runs over his first 49 games. Two of those jacks have come in the last four games and Rodriguez has now reached base safely in 10 consecutive games and driven in 12 runs during that span.

On Sunday, he’ll match up with Astros left-hander Colton Gordon, who has already given up six extra-base hits (two homers) over 9 2/3 innings in the first two starts of his career. The short porch in left field is a dream for right-handed batters with pop like Rodriguez. FanDuel once again has the best price here.

Stallions VS Panthers Preview

0

THREE STALLIONS TO WATCH ON OFFENSE

*J’Mar Smith: It’s well documented that the Stallions veteran took jobs detailing cars and doing whatever was needed at Dunkin’ Donuts in Vestavia, Alabama was part of the way he filled his hours in between time on the football field. Now he’s back throwing the football for the Stallions. Smith wasn’t perfect in his first start since the opening game of the 2023 season but he did some really good things in the Stallions loss to St. Louis last week. Smith was 14-of-27 for 262 yards with three long touchdown passes and one interception.

*Deon Cain: When the Stallions need a big-chunk play, they call on the 6-foot-1, 194-pound Clemson graduate. Cain has four touchdown receptions of 50 yards or more this season and is averaging 19 yards per catch on his 23 receptions. Two of his touchdowns came in last week’s loss to St. Louis. Those two catches – which were his only two of the game – totaled 115 yards.

*Cade Johnson: The 5-foot-10, 194-pound South Dakota State product is one of the smaller players on the Stallions roster but he specializes in big plays. Johnson had the game-tying reception in the final minute of the third week of the season against the Arlington Renegades when he gathered in a 20-yard scoring pass from Matt Corral. The Stallions won the game on the conversion attempt when Corral scored on a run. Johnson had the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter this past week in St. Louis when he teamed with J’Mar Smith for a 47-yard touchdown pass. Overall, Johnson has 10 catches for 188 yards in five games.

THREE STALLIONS TO WATCH ON DEFENSE

*A.J. Thomas: The versatile safety is making a strong case to be a repeat selection on the All-UFL team. Thomas, who started at linebacker in the opener before returning to safety, has 44 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and four pass breakups on the season. One of his interceptions came in last week’s loss at St. Louis.

*Mario Goodrich: The playmaking cornerback started the first two games of the season before missing the next four games due to an injury. He’s been outstanding since returning two weeks ago in a win over the Houston Roughnecks. Goodrich, who is also one of the Stallions best players on the kick coverage units, forced a fumble in each of the past two games. He leads the team with three forced fumbles this season.

*Maximilian Roberts:  The Stallions added the 6-foot-1, 242-pound Boston College product to the roster after standout edge rusher Ronnie Perkins went out with an injury. Roberts responded in his first game by sharing the team’s lone sack in the loss to St. Louis. Roberts played 10 games for the Memphis Showboats last season and finished with 18 tackles, four tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Look for Roberts to play a key role the rest of the way.

PLAYOFF BOUND

The UFL playoffs are settled with two weeks left in the regular season. But regular season conference championships are still up for grabs. Birmingham and Michigan will meet in the USFL Conference Championship Game for the second consecutive season and St. Louis will play host to the D.C. Defenders in the XFL Conference Championship Game. Michigan enters Saturday with a one-game lead over the Stallions. However, Birmingham does currently hold the tiebreaker after winning at Michigan earlier this season. The teams are not playing for home field advantage, though, because Ford Field, where Michigan plays its home games, has a scheduling conflict on that day. The Stallions and Panthers will return to Protective Stadium on June 8 for the playoff game.

Birmingham and Michigan played in the 2024 regular season finale at Protective Stadium with the Stallions escaping with a 20-19 victory. The teams returned to Protective Stadium the following week with Birmingham scoring the final 28 points in a 31-18 victory.

SCOUTING THE MICHIGAN PANTHERS

*Quarterback Bryce Perkins has emerged as perhaps the league’s most dangerous offensive player. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Perkins is a legitimate UFL Player of the Year candidate. Thus far, he’s 109-for-158 passing for 1,342 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Many of those passing yards came after he bought time with his scrambling ability until his receivers got open. Perkins also has 269 rushing yards on 47 carries with five touchdowns. He played in four games last season, the final one coming in the regular season finale against the Stallions when he rushed for 37 yards before leaving the game due to an injury. Perkins missed last week’s win over the Houston Roughnecks after suffering an ankle injury the prior week. Danny Etling stepped in to lead the Panthers to the win.

*Pressuring the quarterback has been a strength of the Panthers but they haven’t produced the sacks at their customary rate this season. Michigan is sixth in the UFL with 13 sacks entering Saturday’s game. Part of that is the absence of standout edge rusher Breeland Speaks, who only played in two games before being injured. The Panthers do have some dangerous rushers in defensive ends Kenny Willekes (3.5 sacks) and Mika Tafua (3 sacks) and linebacker Frank Ginda (2.5 sacks). Michigan is first in the UFL in rushing defense after allowing 86.3 yards per game on the ground through eight games.

*The emergence of rugged running back Toa Taua has been important in the Panthers’ offensive success. The 5-foot-8, 204-pound Taua, who played collegiately at Utah, has 310 rushing yards on 69 carries with five touchdowns. Malik Turner, a veteran of 44 NFL games, is the team’s most dangerous receiver with 35 catches for 334 yards and four touchdowns.

Pascal Siakam drops 39; Pacers put Knicks in 2-0 series hole

0

NEW YORK — After a quiet performance from Pascal Siakam in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Pacers entered Friday night’s matchup against the Knicks determined to get him more involved in the offense.

It worked from the opening tip.

Siakam rattled off Indiana’s first 11 points, scored 17 in the first quarter overall and finished with a playoff career-high 39 points on 15-of-23 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists. The performance helped silence the crowd at Madison Square Garden and gave the Pacers a 114-109 victory that put them ahead 2-0 in the series as it shifts to Indianapolis for Game 3 on Sunday.

“That’s why we brought him here,” Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton said. “That’s what he’s here to do. He can get a bucket in so many different ways.

“We just kept feeding him, and I thought he did a great job of making big shot after big shot after big shot. Killing momentum. When you’re in an environment like this, the crowd’s getting into it, a lot of those shots can be backbreakers.”

Siakam won a championship with the 2019 Raptors, and the Pacers have leaned on his experience since they acquired him in a trade with Toronto in January 2024.

He offered his usual advice to his teammates Friday night: Despite their series advantage, it was important not to get too ahead of themselves.

“You can’t ride a wave,” he said. “Can’t get too high with the highs, can’t get too low with the lows. I just appreciate the opportunity that I have here to have a bunch of guys that they want to hear my voice.”

Siakam’s leadership is valuable, but the Pacers also have benefited from his scoring prowess during their consecutive runs to the conference finals. This was his third career 35-point game in the playoffs with the Pacers, already the third most all time (trailing only Reggie Miller and Paul George), according to ESPN Research.

“He was the guy that got us going and got us through some difficult stretches,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “It’s hard to score that number of points in a game like this where you always have a physical matchup defensively and there’s a guy crashing and flying at the basket. But he did a phenomenal job. It’s a quiet 39 points. It really was.”

Siakam has been matched up in this series with his former Raptors teammate, Knicks forward OG Anunoby, which he said gives him additional incentive. Anunoby held Siakam to 0-for-3 on field goal attempts in the series opener, but Siakam was 4-for-6 when guarded by him Friday.

“It’s amazing that we’re both in a position where we get to compete at this level coming from Toronto,” Siakam said. “It just gives you extra motivation. You just choose to compete at a higher level. I know how hard a competitor he is.”

Siakam was one of six Pacers who scored in double figures. Haliburton added 14 points and 11 assists, and Myles Turner scored 13 of his 16 in the fourth quarter.

“What’s really special about our group right now is we just have so many different people contributing,” Haliburton said. “So many people doing special things.”

The balanced attack helped the Pacers pick up their sixth consecutive road win this postseason as they improved to 6-1. But Carlisle implored his team to stay focused despite jumping to a series advantage.

“There are a lot of traps here,” Carlisle said. “You cannot assume going home is going to be easier. It never is. Each game as you ascend in a playoff series becomes harder. And New York, they’ve got an amazing fighting spirit.”

2 Vanguard ETFs to Buy With $2,000 and Hold Forever

0

Got an extra couple thousand bucks you know you won’t be needing anytime soon, but you aren’t quite sure what to do with it? Put it to work in the stock market, of course. And just to ensure your investment is a true buy-and-forget-it forever holding, your best bet is a broad-based exchange-traded index fund, or ETF. These are just large baskets of many different stocks, providing you with permanent diversification that’s automatically maintained for you by someone else.

To this end, here’s a closer look at two ETFs from the Vanguard family of funds that you might want to consider buying for yourself sooner rather than later — presuming you already own something like the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO 1.88%), which is based on the S&P 500 (^GSPC 1.87%) index. While an S&P 500 index fund reflects the collective value and movement of about 80% of the U.S. stock market and is still your best first foundational equity holding, some strategic ETF picks made right now could spice up your overall returns just a bit.

Data by YCharts.

Time for a little more value

Over the course of the past several years, growth stocks have absolutely trounced value stocks. And understandably so. We’ve seen incredible strides on the technology front, like artificial intelligence and mobile connectivity, in recent years, which have proven lucrative for lots of companies categorized as growth names. Value stocks and their underlying companies haven’t necessarily done poorly during this time, to be clear. They just couldn’t hold a candle to the gains growth names were making.

As the old adage goes, though, nothing lasts forever. As this economic growth cycle matures against a backdrop of higher interest rates (and therefore higher borrowing costs), don’t be surprised to see value stocks start to shine compared to growth stocks again.

An investor considering a forever investment in Vanguard ETFs.

That’s not a prospect based on a mere timing-minded gut feeling, either. Franklin-Templeton Funds portfolio manager Sam Peters and his analytical team did the number-crunching, finding that “valuation spreads [between growth and value stocks] have rebounded to historic highs, with value stocks now trading at the 91st percentile relative to growth stocks.” He adds, “We believe that such excesses are not sustainable, and that such depressed valuations represent an incredible store of latent energy to power returns once value stocks begin their eventual rebound.”

It shouldn’t take much longer to see this pivot unfurl. Peters concludes that “the debate within markets is intensifying to the point where a new value cycle should crystalize” and that it “will take hold sooner rather than later.”

There are several ways to position for this impending shift, but the Vanguard Value ETF (VTV 1.34%) is arguably one of the easiest and best.

VTV Chart

Data by YCharts.

Based on the Center for Research in Security Prices’ CRSP US Large Cap Value index, the fund holds a stake in every single major value stock available to U.S. investors — a little over 300 tickers. Yet, unlike most growth funds these days, this one’s very well balanced. No single name makes up more than about 4% of the ETF’s total assets.

This fund is also cheap enough to stick with for the long haul. Its annual expense ratio is a mere 0.04% of your investment’s value.

For now, take dividend growth over dividend yield

The other Vanguard ETF you might want to make a point of scooping up at this time is the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG 1.51%).

At first blush, this pick seems awfully similar to — even if not identical to — the Vanguard Value ETF. It also seems relatively risky in light of the fact that interest rates are rising, pushing bond yields and dividend yields higher by virtue of pushing bond prices and stock prices lower. It would be naïve to dismiss this potential pitfall.

Neither worry is quite concerning enough to not take on a stake in this particular exchange-traded fund, though.

As for its similarity to the value fund, only three of these two ETFs’ top-10 holdings overlap. That’s largely because Vanguard’s Dividend Appreciation fund is built to mirror the S&P U.S. Dividend Growers index, which requires at least 10 consecutive years of annual per-share dividend increases for inclusion, something a surprising number of names categorized as value stocks haven’t accomplished.

Regarding the risk that rising rates pose to dividend-paying stocks, don’t read too much of that risk into the picture either.

OK, if it was an instrument like the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM 1.34%) that prioritizes payout yields over quality stocks, the prospect of higher interest rates might be more concerning. That particular equity ETF trades more like a bond in that it’s more subject and sensitive to even the slightest ebb and flow of interest rates.

Vanguard’s Dividend Appreciation Fund is measurably different, though. While it is dividend-oriented, its stock-selection regimen ultimately finds quality companies capable of growing their yearly dividend payouts for long stretches of time. End result? A better net-performing basket of stocks, when combining the reinvestment of their growing dividends with these tickers’ capital gains. Mutual fund outfit Hartford’s actually done some extensive research on the matter, determining that since the early 1970s, S&P 500 stocks with consistently growing dividends produce an average yearly gain of just over 10% versus an average annual net gain of less than 5% for non-dividend payers. And ironically, since 1930, it’s actually the market’s second-highest quintile of dividend payers — not the top quintile — that outperformed most often.

What gives? Hartford’s research analysts conclude this disparity is ultimately rooted in sustainability or lack thereof. They go on to explain these most rewarding dividend-paying companies have also “historically exhibited strong fundamentals, solid business plans, and a deep commitment to their shareholders.” Which makes sense.

Interested investors should also know that Hartford is particularly bullish on dividend stocks right now despite tariff-induced turbulence, suggesting that sky-high corporate profitability and near-record-low dividend payout ratios bode very well for this sliver of stocks.

James Brumley has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF, Vanguard Index Funds-Vanguard Value ETF, Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, and Vanguard Whitehall Funds-Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF. Wes Anderson takes his quirkiness ‘to a whole new level’

Featuring Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Scarlett Johansson and many more, the director’s latest A-lister-filled farce has premiered at Cannes – and it’s daft but fun.

Just when you think that Wes Anderson can’t get any more Wes Anderson-ish, he makes a film which takes Wes Anderson-ishness to a whole new level, packing in yet more of the quirks that have become his trademarks: the symmetrical tableaux, the brightly coloured, crisply pressed costumes, the deadpan delivery of proudly artificial dialogue by an ensemble of stars, many of whom are regulars (yes, Bill Murray does appear). Whether viewers of his latest offbeat comedy are Anderson aficionados or Wes-sceptics, they’re bound to wonder if the writer-director will ever attempt a project that isn’t quite so recognisable.

The good news is that The Phoenician Scheme is one of Anderson’s funnier films, with a commitment to knockabout zaniness which lets you smile at the Anderson-ishness rather than simply roll your eyes at it. The opening sequence, especially, is a madcap treat. Benicio del Toro is introduced as Zsa-zsa Korda, an amoral 1950s businessman who seems to have been inspired by the super-rich likes of William Randolph Hearst, J Paul Getty, Aristotle Onassis and Howard Hughes – and who bears a certain resemblance to the patriarch in The Royal Tenenbaums, too. He’s first seen puffing a cigar on his private jet, and then surviving one of the assassination attempts that are a regular part of his life – and his miraculous escape has enough energy to make you giddy.

He has made a light, whimsical, but slow and talky farce which is so daft in its contrivances that the cast and crew might have been making it up as they went along

After that, though, the film quickly comes down to earth. Back in his palatial villa, Korda has a meeting with his 20-year-old daughter, Liesl (Mia Threapleton). She is a novitiate nun he hasn’t seen in years, but he nonetheless wants her – and not one of his nine sons – to inherit the fortune he has made from arms dealing and profiteering, among other unsavoury practices. He also wants her to help him with his latest and greatest venture, a massive infrastructure scheme involving a railway and a dam in a Middle Eastern desert. Liesl isn’t interested, but she does want to investigate the rumour that Korda murdered her mother, one of his three wives, so she agrees to hang around.

The trouble is that the infrastructure scheme has been sabotaged by a secret agent (Rupert Friend) working for all the governments around the world that loathe Korda. Suddenly short of the funding required, he has to fly across the region, renegotiating contracts with the aid of Liesl and his nerdy new Norwegian secretary, Bjorn (a lovably goofy Michael Cera, who could have been born to be in a Wes Anderson film).

Korda plays basketball with two railway tycoons (Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston) and a prince (Riz Ahmed); he is held at gunpoint alongside a nightclub impresario (Mathieu Amalric); he shares a blood transfusion with a shipping magnate (Jeffrey Wright); and he proposes to his second cousin (Scarlett Johansson). Along the way, he narrowly avoids being assassinated: every time he has a near-death experience, he visits a black-and-white heaven, where God and the angels are played by Murray, F Murray Abraham and Willem Dafoe.

The Phoenician Scheme

Director: Wes Anderson

Cast: Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson

Run-time: 1hr 41m

There are glimmers of emotion here and there. On one level, The Phoenician Scheme is about a heartless man learning to be a better person by spending time with his determined daughter. But on another level, the film is about… well, it’s hard to say. The way that wealthy industrialists profit from exploiting others could hardly be a more resonant topic at the moment, but Anderson doesn’t delve too deeply into the consequences of Korda’s decades of conniving. He has made a light, whimsical, but slow and talky farce which is episodic in its structure, reliant on catchphrases for its humour, and so daft in its contrivances that the cast and crew might have been making it up as they went along. It’s one of the ironies of Anderson’s films: in many respects they are planned with obsessive attention to detail, and yet the plot of The Phoenician Scheme could have been scribbled on the back of the envelope in the small hours of the morning. It’s good fun, but unless your tolerance for the director’s idiosyncrasies is stratospherically high, the chances are that the story will seem too random for you to care about by the halfway point.

Things perk up later with a Tom-and-Jerry style fight between Korda and his malicious half-brother, played by Benedict Cumberbatch with a stick-on beard. But the slapstick does serve as a final admission that this nonsense shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Some directors boast that they make the films that they want to see, and they don’t care about pleasing anyone else. In the case of The Phoenician Scheme, it feels as if Anderson and his team were enjoying it more than audiences ever will.

Planned Parenthood to lay off 66 workers, restructure Minnesota presence

0

Planned Parenthood North Central States is laying off 66 workers, and reassigning an additional 37, as it closes and consolidates eight health centers.

The restructuring affects health centers in Apple Valley, Bemidji, Richfield and Alexandria. The centers appear to provide services such as emergency contraception to walk-in patients and prescription services; none provide abortions.

The number of Minnesota employees affected by the layoffs wasn’t immediately available, a spokesperson said.

The layoffs come as patient needs change, according to a news release from Planned Parenthood, and “the broken aspects of our health care system have intensified, the organization’s Minnesota Title X funds have been frozen, and the U.S. House voted to advance a reconciliation package that defunds Planned Parenthood.”

Iowa health centers affected by the restructuring include locations in Ames, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City and Urbandale.

Planned Parenthood North Central States has already eliminated 35 additional positions through gradual attrition, the nonprofit said.

In coming years, the nonprofit will reduce brick-and-mortar sites to create regional centers, while doubling down on virtual and online care.

Ruth Richardson, president and CEO of the nonprofit, said in a press release that the organization has been “fighting to hold together an unsustainable infrastructure as the landscape shifts around us and an onslaught of attacks continues.”

Most Rigorous Study Of Human Cells Exposed To 5G Strikes Blow At Common Conspiracy Theory

0

The results are in, and we finally know what happens to human cells exposed to 5G signals. In a sealed experiment at Constructor University in Germany, scientists bombarded human skin cells with electromagnetic waves that were ten times stronger than the recommended exposure limit, way above those produced by 5G towers, for up to 48 hours. The results were damning: nothing happened.

The experiment was the most rigorous to date and directly challenges the common myth that 5G wireless signals cause harm.

The 5G standard in mobile communication technology was introduced because of the sheer amount of data being transmitted across mobile networks. Basically, we are using internet technology more than ever, and as this use increases, the more demand there is for faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity. However, for some people, this basic reason belies a more sinister set of motives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, rumors began to circulate connecting 5G towers with the virus. The extent of these conspiracy claims varied from people being worried about the health implications of invisible radiation coming from the towers to those who believed they were installed as part of a broader effort to turn us all into zombies. Side note: there is an entertaining irony in the fact that the technology these conspiracy theorists villainized actually allowed them to circulate their ideas to wider audiences at a nice, faster pace with fewer lags.

But regardless, the spread of these beliefs was mostly predicated on a misunderstanding about the technology and the effects that electromagnetic fields have on our health.

From the moment these conspiracy theories started to spread online, scientists attempted to correct the narrative by emphasizing that low-energy radio waves used in phone technologies do not produce ionizing radiation, which causes cancer or other illnesses (mobile phones emit what’s called radiofrequency radiation, which is non-ionizing).

But despite these assertions, research into the effects of higher frequency waves such as those used in 5G has received less attention. Those that had undertaken an assessment of this frequency range had been criticized for methodological shortcomings, including a lack of blind conditions, temperature controls, and transparent statistical methods.

The new study attempted to change this and represents the most rigorous study that has ever been conducted on this subject.

The team took two types of human skin cells – known as keratinocytes (outer skin cells) and fibroblasts (cells that form connective tissues) – and exposed them to electromagnetic waves of different frequencies (27 GHz and 40.5 GHz). These frequencies are significantly higher than those produced by most 5G towers, but the team also experimented with their intensity. They used power fluctuations that varied from relatively low exposure to one that was 10 times higher than the permissible exposure limits.

The cells were monitored over two exposure windows: 2 hours of exposure and 48 hours of exposure.

The researchers conducted whole-genome RNA sequencing to measure any changes in the cells’ genetic activity, as well as DNA methylation arrays, which can offer insights into the regulation of gene expression.

Ultimately, after they concluded their analysis, the team had found nothing to raise concern at all.

“Our results show with great clarity that in human skin cells, even under worst-case conditions, no significant changes in gene expression or methylation patterns are observed after exposure,” the team explains in their paper.

“Due to the heterogeneities in previous studies, we devised a comprehensive experimental setup and design that includes variations in cell type, power flux density, frequency, and time of exposure to 5G EMF under compensation of temperature increase.”

The tests took place in an exposure facility that allowed for blinded exposure and temperature monitoring. In addition, they included two control groups – cells exposed to ultraviolet light and cells that received a sham-exposure (they were handled exactly like the test cells but not actually exposed to the 5G electromagnetic fields). The results showed that the only cells that experienced any changes were those exposed to UV light, and those changes were predictable.

But could chance have played a role in these results? Well, to avoid this, the team also used a technique that shuffled the labels of the sham-exposed and properly exposed cells hundreds of times. This allowed them to check whether the signal of any gene disruption was noticeable when compared to random assignment. This too was negative.

“Overall, the data show no indication that the gene expression and methylation of human skin cells were altered by the exposure conditions selected here,” the team concludes.

This work is a thorough rebuttal to the myths, misconceptions, and conspiracies surrounding 5G networks.

“In spite of assessments from the WHO in 2010 and the National Toxicology Program (NTP), this topic is still prevalent in the media, in public opinion and in the political sphere. This is in part due to a few isolated scientific studies providing opposing evidence,” the authors explain.

“Due to our strong emphasis on highly controlled experimental conditions and our combinatorial analysis, we hope to close this debate and in particular cast fundamental doubt on the existence of possible nonthermal biological effects of exposure.”

The study is published in PNAS Nexus.
