DelFest, held on Memorial day weekend each year in Cumberland, Maryland at the Allegheny County Fairgrounds is now in its 16th year and going strong. When you come up with a list of must-do festivals for bluegrass fans, there are certainly three big ones that immediately come to mind, MerleFest, The Telluride Bluesgrass Festival, and this one. While Telluride gets enormous attention, DelFest remains an enticing option for a host of reasons. Firstly, its relatively easy to get to, its gorgeous, with towering tree covered mountains surrounding it, and there’s a beautiful river running alongside it.

But that’s just part of the charm. The main attraction is a staggering amount of musical riches on three stages, spread out over hundreds of acres, giving a place for bluegrass, jam grass, country, and Americana artists to ply their trade before a friendly and welcoming crowd of music enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. DelFest is curated and operated by The McCoury family, and remains the highlight of the year for them and their most loyal fans.

This year’s event had its own set of challenges, with the weather being on the colder side, and intermittent rain on Thursday and Friday. But the sun finally appearedon Saturday, and fans got to enjoy two days of perfection in amazingly comfortable 70-degree weather. The only disappointment was the river level was considerably higher than last year, and coupled with the cold water temperatures, made tubing nearly impossible. Still though, fans had plenty to do, watching music, camping, jamming, eating from the many food vendors, drinking micro-brews, shopping the handmade vendor crafts and clothes, buying merch, and generally enjoying the good vibes found everywhere.

This year’s lineup featured a good amount of traditional bluegrass sprinkled in with a few choice jam-grass bands including Railroad Earth and Leftover Salmon. These two bands delivered mightily, with Leftover Salmon debuting selections from their brand new album Lets Party.

Bluegrass Emeritus Larry Sparks also performed and he has the distinction of being perhaps the lone guy left standing who played in both The Stanley Brothers and The Clinch Mountain Boys. Playing favorites like” John Deere Tractor” and “Tennessee 1949,” Sparks was a welcome sight to a crowd of hardcore grass enthusiasts. In all, over 20 acts performed on the long weekend on 3 stages.  So much great music, and impossible to take it all in, yet so rewarding. The following are highlights in no particular order.

Dan Tyminski Band

Fresh out of Union Station, Tyminski has assembled an absolute mother of a bluegrass band, and it was a sight to behold. Tyminski possesses the most enviable voice in traditional bluegrass music today. Its smooth as creamy butter on hot cornbread, yet resonant and powerful at the same time. Dan’s energy level and enthusiasm are a joy to behold and watching him perform was one of the moments where you feel so glad to be alive and part of this experience, you just don’t want it to end. Dobro player Gavin Largent, a former member of East Nash Grass, is a truly exciting musician to watch, playing monstrous licks and making it look effortless.

Songs like “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Hoe Corn” brought on goose bumps, but the one that really registered was Dan’s version of “Carry Me Across The Mountain” which he recorded some years back on a solo album. Tyminski introduced it by telling the crowd it was written based on the true life of musician Hazel Dickens who grew up in the Appalachian mountains facing an incredibly hard childhood, where there was no doctor anywhere close, and Hazel’s mother had to carry her daughter literally across the mountains to get her needed medical attention.

“Carry me across the mountain, before it is too late, heal my broken body, death not be my fate.” They were heavy lyrics sung by a modern-day master that really resonated. Seeing the West Virginia mountains looming over the stage made it a real ‘Wow’ moment among many.

Sister Sadie

An all-female bluegrass and country band from Nashville, Sister Sadie has been at it over a dozen years now. The idea started at The Station Inn where these ladies honed their chops and along the way built an enviable fan base. Members over the years have come and gone, with founders Gena Britt and acclaimed fiddler Deanie Richardson keeping the band moving forward.

The current version of the band features the songwriting and singing of Dani Flowers as well as the sublime vocals of current IBMA Female vocalist of the year Jaelee Roberts. Richards fiddling is dazzling, and watching her and mandolin player Rainy Miatke play a couple of intricate fiddle-mandolin instrumentals had the crowd screaming in approval.

Songs like “Avalanche” also brought massive applause. As I was moving away from the photographers pit, something stopped me in my tracks and absolutely mesmerized me. That something was the bands cover of “Make the World Go Away”, the classic Eddy Arnold song that many have covered including Ray Price and Alison Krauss. But this version on this night was one of the magical moments, you are grateful to have witnessed. Sister Sadie is one of my favorite discoveries of DelFest, period.

Sierra Ferrell

Sierra Ferrell has become a staple of Delfest and its easy to understand why. Of all the acts who played the entire weekend, she drew the biggest crowd, and it wasn’t even close. There was a mass migration of men, women and teens attempting to get as close to the stage as they could. It wasn’t enough to just watch her on the big stage monitors, they were determined to watch her every move with their own eyes and take in the massive moments they knew were coming. And they were not disappointed.

Dressed in a black leather jacket and white Stetson hat, the entire stage decorated in her trademark flowers, Ferrell came out and absolutely silenced the enormous crowd who was intent on listening to every word and note. Familiar songs such as “Jeremiah,” “Lighthouse,” “In Dreams,” and “I Could Drive You Crazy” had the crowd in the palm of her hand. Hardcore grass fans, jam-grassers, country fans, and ordinary folks all watched in awe.

Of course,” Fox Hunt” was a thrill, yet for me the best part and by far the indicator of how far this little lady has come was the moment she put down the guitar and fiddle, grabbed a hand mic, confidently walked to the very front of the stage, and went full on honky tonk, twirling, dancing, and singing “Dollar Bill Bar,” John Anderson’s “Years,“ and Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee.” The band was in full on hillbilly twang heaven with blazing Telecaster solos throughout. The crowd couldn’t have been happier and in this very moment you realized that Sierra Ferrell really has arrived and become a rock star.

This was a DelFest performance for the ages!

Larkin Poe

Larkin Poe is a duo made up of two sisters and a backing band. The Lovell sisters who grew up down in the deep south started out as an acoustic Americana act but would eventually morph into a more aggressive Southern rock sound. Rebecca impressed many on this night with her fiery Stratocaster electric blues playing, while her sister Megan demonstrated the sonic powers of a lap steel and a slide bar for a very excited audience. They have a growing catalog of albums of original material they draw from.  As a bonus they went into an all-acoustic set showcasing their down-home harmonies as well as dobro and acoustic picking prowess, performing it in front of a single condenser microphone. A rousing set and a change of pace for DelFest.

Darrell Scott Band and Tim O’Brien Band

Maybe not a household name to the public, but plenty of real music fans know who Darrell Scott is. He’s a wonderful songwriter and the guy behind Travis Tritt’s “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and “Long Time Gone” by The Dixie Chicks, but his biggest song at least in the Americana and bluegrass realm is “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” Patty Loveless did the definitive version of it. What a treat to see Scott perform with a band. He’s written quite a few songs about Appalachia and we got to hear several from the man himself.

Tim O’Brien played a set with his own band. O’Brien is one of the elite musicians that has literally played with about everybody you can name. Perhaps best known as a founder of Hot Rize, he’s made a deep mark in the bluegrass realm. With his own band these days, he specializes in lots of old-timey fiddle tunes and good time front-porch pickin’ songs. O’Brien showed off some impressive flat-picking skills on a ’50s era Martin guitar, as wife Jan Fabricius carried the rhythm on mandolin.

Wyatt Ellis

If you’ve been at all plugged into the traditional bluegrass world, then you have likely heard of Ellis. This 16 year old mandolin playing prodigy has been on the scene playing with just about everyone he can, including Billy Strings, Rhonda Vincent, Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Marty Stuart, and on and on. He’s been on the Grand Ole Opry six times and is attracting loads of attention. This year Wyatt played two days of DelFest on the secondary stage with a band of like-minded youngsters. This kid is the real deal. At one point during his set, Eight-time IBMA mandolin player of the year, Ronnie McCoury strode onto the stage and joined Ellis for a few songs. Grins were on all faces, but none as big as on Wyatt’s. Keep your eye on this guy, some are already calling him the future of Bluegrass.

The SteelDrivers

With new frontman Matt Dame in tow and a new album, Grammy-winning band The SteelDrivers continue to make great and exciting music. Fiddler Tammy Rogers is the bands not-so-secret weapon, and her fiddle playing is always inspiring. Watching her playing the melodies in sync with Richard Bailey’s banjo is always a treat.

Matt Dame has the type of voice we’ve been accustomed to hearing with The Steeldrivers and he brings that vocal muscularity along with great rhythm guitar and songwriting skill. “The River Knows” is a new one the band debuted and it’s a keeper. So many of this band’s songs are sing alongs, and its always a good choice to have them at a festival. This is the band Chris Stapleton was fundamental in forming and he is no doubt proud of all they have accomplished since.

Asleep At The Wheel

At one point, Ray Benson was talking about hanging it up and retiring the band. It hasn’t happened. In fact, he’s been retooling the band gradually. Young additions Ian Stewart on fiddle and Flavio Pasquetto on pedal-less steel have renewed Benson’s enthusiasm altogether. The version of Asleep At The Wheel who showed up mid-afternoon Saturday was a band renewed, and they had the crowd from the first bar of “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.”

Benson looked healthy and sharp and dressed to the hilt. With the new band, he delved deeper, even playing some Hank Williams and Carter Family material in addition to classics the band is known for like “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Milkcow Blues,” and “Faded Love.” He revealed to the excited crowd that in fact Asleep At The Wheel who had formed in Paw Paw West Virginia, played their first ever gig in Cumberland Maryland back in 1970.

Now 55 years later here was Ray Benson once again playing in Cumberland. It was a great set from a legendary band, and I overheard comments from a young 20 something musician how much it meant to him to see Asleep At The Wheel, so what higher praise could there be than the fact that this band is still inspiring musicians.

Del McCoury Band and The Traveling McCourys

The Traveling McCourys , made up of all the members of The Del McCoury Band minus Del, with the addition of guitarist Cody Kilby, are essentially a side project for the boys when they aren’t touring with Del. Along the way, and with a few albums under their belt, they have become arguably, the bluegrass band to envy. And why not? They’ve got the musical firepower and all the chops, the recognition, a ready-made fan-base, and total freedom creatively to explore anything musically they wish to.

At DelFest, they are essentially the house band, and they participate in late night after-hours jams, as well as playing their own dedicated prime-time Main stage set. Their set this year was no exception, with people packed into every nook and cranny to watch the show. That set on Saturday night was absolutely a joy to behold, and I found myself lost deep in the music, wishing it would never end. If you haven’t yet seen this band, make it a goal, you won’t regret it.

At a mere 86 years old, Del McCoury is undoubtedly one of the last of the old guard first generation grassers left playing actively. And his popularity hasn’t waned a bit. In fact he is so beloved by DelFest attendees, that they’ve adopted a special greeting, saying “Del Yeah” to each other frequently.

Del’s image adorns the festival banners and merch. His three performances of the weekend were absolutely packed. It’s amazing to see how many young people gravitate to his music and his presence, clinging to every note as it were. What is it about this man that resonates so well with so many people? Authenticity is a big reason why. He is so genuine and who you see is literally who the man really is, silly humor and all.

The Del smile and laugh, so big, so legit, ought to be a patented prescription for anything that ails you. Beyond all that, his music is exciting, his band is absolutely one of the very best in bluegrass, and he has universal appeal. This year, his closing Sunday night performance was memorable. Battling a cold that plagued him all weekend, he nonetheless powered through grinning all the way.

Fiddler Christian Ward is brand new to the band with the departure of Jason Carter, and to any wondering out there, Ward has the chops and the style for this band, and for that matter The Traveling McCourys as well. In short, he was an excellent choice and his playing is superb.

On this particular evening, Del had three grandsons’ playing with the band, Heaven McCoury, Jacob McCoury and the youngest one, Vassar McCoury. And then, among the honored guests he asked to the stage was his own brother Jerry McCoury. Jerry retired from performing, yet has a long history playing with Del in the earlier years. Hearing some stories from the two and watching all seven McCourys playing together onstage was such a big moment, in fact it was the biggest moment of the weekend.

With Del McCoury its all about family and fans, and this edition of the DelFest not only showcased the depth of talent that runs in the McCoury family, but also gave his fans something special to witness as well.

Trump Says TikTok Agreement Will Not Mirror US Steel Deal

0

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that any agreement to keep TikTok operational in the United States would differ significantly from the anticipated acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel, drawing a sharp contrast between the two high-profile business developments.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump underscored that any resolution concerning TikTok’s future would need the green light from the Chinese government, citing the platform’s ownership ties. “China would have to approve any deal,” he stated, emphasizing the international implications surrounding the app’s fate. His remarks arrive as U.S. lawmakers and regulators continue to grapple with national security concerns tied to foreign-owned tech platforms, per Reuters.

The ongoing negotiations around TikTok come amid broader concerns about data privacy and foreign influence on Trump and American digital infrastructure. The app, which is owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, has faced repeated scrutiny from U.S. officials, with calls for divestiture or outright bans becoming a recurring theme over the past few years.

In contrast, the deal between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel has sparked its own debate, particularly around foreign ownership of critical American manufacturing assets. However, Trump suggested the TikTok situation poses a distinct set of challenges, particularly due to the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding China and the digital economy, according to Reuters.

Data from the IndexBox platform shows that the U.S. social media market remains on an upward trajectory, with TikTok standing out as one of the leading platforms. Its continued popularity underscores the app’s influential role, particularly among younger demographics, reinforcing the high stakes surrounding its future in the American market.

Destination X’s Josh Martinez Talks About His Strategy for the Show

0

Destination X is coming out of the gates hot with its surprise twists including the first round ousting of Big Brother 19 winner Josh Martinez. The gregarious competition reality star has also participated in multiple seasons of The Challenge and a season of Los 50, but ultimately a bus load of reality show newbies and his own failure to listen to his gut instincts cast Martinez out onto the Via di S. Gregorio all by his lonesome.

The brand-new competition reality series puts 12 contestants inside a blacked-out bus that travels across Europe. With challenges and clues, they have to guess where they are for the chance at a $250,000 prize.

RELATED: Why Jeffrey Dean Morgan Said There’s “No Way” He’d Ever Be a Player on Destination X

As a self professed “adrenaline junkie,” Josh told NBC Insider that his love of adventure and travel led him to sign up for the inaugural season of Destination X.

“It just sounded so exciting, so different. It really did scare me at first because I had no idea what I’m getting myself into,” he laughed. “I was like, just jump in head first and just give it a go and see how it plays out.”

What’s tougher to survive: the Big Brother house or the Destination X bus?

Martinez said even though he only made it through a few days of Destination X production before he was out of the game, he knew that the confinement in the bus was going to be its own outsized challenge unique to this competition.

Big Brother is one of the hardest games out there. You’re confined in a house for 100 plus days so I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m gonna do great.’ But no. The bus was way harder,” he assessed. “You have nowhere to run. You can’t go get some fresh air. You can’t escape. You’re in there, trapped.”

Josh said the saving grace during those first few days was getting to know his fellow contestants. But he realized that he had some claustrophobia issues the longer he was inside the bus.

“I think my biggest struggle, and what was hard for me, was the reality that I’m trapped on this bus and I’m really not getting off so that started to play with my mind,” he explained. “I thought I would be good at it, but I realized that I am a little bit claustrophobic and I don’t do well with confined spaces or being controlled.”

He confirmed that the only place to get some personal space was inside their individual sleeping spaces.

“That is truly your only escape from everybody, when you go to bed. When you go lay down and you close your curtains, that is your only break from everyone. There is no other time. On paper, it sounded easy. But once that road trip started and we were on the road for nine hours, and I saw this is real. So my respect to all my castmates and production because it was really hard.”

Even for challenges, Josh said he only got to exit the bus two times.

“I was there for three, four days and I think we stepped off two times. And when you step off, you’re blindfolded, you have headphones. And when I got out, I was in a well,” he laughed.

Bonding on the Destination X bus

A great social game can keep you in any competition reality show longer but Josh said he had two big adversaries in Mack Fitzgerald and Rick Szabo.

“I got the vibe from Rick that…I just felt distant from him,” he explained about their animosity. “He wasn’t opening up to me, so I felt a disconnect. I was like, ‘All right, he probably either thinks I’m a threat or he just doesn’t vibe with me, and that’s OK.’”

And Mack selected Josh to go to the Map Room which meant she saw him as a threat. Josh agreed.

“There’s only so much they can show, but Mack calls me out,” he said of a scene that didn’t make it to broadcast. “She says something to me and I kind of went off on her knowing if I come back in here, I’m going after you.”

RELATED:  All the Clues & Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed in the Destination X Premiere

He said it was a gloves off moment and his recognition of her ruthless game play.

“Me and Mack on the game level never connected either, so she’s another person that I was like, ‘All right, I’m gonna gun for her.’”

Unfortunately, Josh said he sandbagged his own game by not trusting his prior visits to Italy and Rome, and picking the wrong area of the map which sent him home.

“What hurt me was my own self, not trusting my instincts and my gut and not playing as aggressively as I play,” he said. “For instance, like with the Biggy situation, him going upstairs and going outside, I should have been like, ‘Nope, I’m doing it.’ And that’s normally how I play these games. So I think that that not playing how I play was the hard hit for me.”

Who does Josh think could win Destination X?

Asked who he thinks could go all the way to the end of the game, Josh picked two players Ally Bross and Biggy Bailey. “I think Ally is so underestimated. You see this gorgeous, beautiful girl, very bubbly and all this stuff. But the way that she attacked competition, she’s there to play, so she’s definitely somebody to keep an eye on,” he pointed out.

“Then I would say, Biggie,” he continued. “Biggy is just somebody that surprised me. He was somebody that was very observant. Instantly, I connected with him so he’s somebody that I’m rooting for. I would love to see Biggie win. He has all the attributes, he has all the physicality…everything. He’s like the full package.”

And what happened after Josh walked off that bus with Jeffrey Dean Morgan by his side? Did they get a drink together in Rome?

Josh said contestants are sent home but he decided to stay in Europe on his own dime and travel. “I never like to go right away home,” he said about his post show habits. “Right after we wrapped that and I did my exit, I traveled for a little bit and and just kind of disconnected and then I went home.”

“It was a hard hit,” he said of his disappointment. “I really high hopes. I wanted to play the game and that’s what was hard. I really didn’t get the chance to compete so now I’m more hungry than ever to just get in and play a game. I don’t know what game it’s gonna be, but the next time you see me on any of these game shows and I come out aggressive, just know it’s because of the loss I took on Destination X!”

Watch Destination X Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes are available to stream next day on Peacock.

Park City’s summer hotel bookings see upward trend

0

The Park City Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau keeps track of hotel bookings through a data platform that measures the performance of around two dozen properties in the Park City area representing about 2,500 rooms.

Park City Chamber President and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff said they are optimistic about visitation during the summer season based on the numbers so far.

“Looking forward the next six months, right now, we are ahead of pace with reservations on the books by almost 11%,” Wesselhoff said.

She said hotel prices are expected to rise about 2% during the next six months.

Looking back at the previous six months, including peak ski season, Wesselhoff said average occupancy and daily rates were up around 2-3% year-over-year.

“Generally speaking, those higher-end ski-in ski-out resort-based properties are performing a little bit better than the average property,” she said.

The most recent tax data, which reflect February purchases, show a decline in local sales and lodging tax revenues, while restaurant tax levels remain flat.

Despite some dips, Wesselhoff remains optimistic.

“While we see some fluctuation month-to-month compared to the previous year, overall we’re seeing incredible growth,” she said.

Preliminary data from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) indicates the 2024-25 winter season saw the second-highest visitation on record at U.S. ski areas.

A recent report from Bank of America says more U.S. households are planning road trips this summer instead of venturing overseas, as consumer sentiment falls amid uncertain economic conditions.

Ed Gale, who played Chucky in the “Child’s Play” film series, has died. He was 61.

A source told TMZ that he passed away Tuesday in hospice in Los Angeles.

Gale’s niece, Kayse, confirmed his death in a heartfelt tribute on Facebook.

“It is with a heavy heart and a surprisingly light coffin (see what I did there?) that we announce the sudden passing of our uncle,” Kayse wrote. “Ed Gale has taken his final bow and is now headlining in the afterlife.”

She looked back on Gale’s career in Hollywood that included more than 130 movies, TV shows and commercials, writing, “With this wide ranging body of work, he leaves behind legacy full of questionable lighting and amazing one-liners.”

The tribute continued: “Ed’s favorite role was that of the ‘fun uncle.’ His love language was sharing his love of the entertainment industry and the magic of Hollywood with his nieces.

“He had one hell of a laugh, and he will be missed,” Kayse added. “Rest in love you cranky bastard.”

In 1986, he made his film debut as the title role in the film “Howard the Duck.”

Two years later, Gale played Chucky in 1988’s “Child’s Play,” the very first film in the popular horror franchise. The movie was directed by Tom Holland and also starred Chris Sarandon, Catherine Hicks, Alex Vincent, Dinah Manoff and Tommy Swerdlow.

He played the serial killer doll again in 1990’s “Child’s Play 2” and 1998’s “Bride of Chucky.”

Fantasy women’s basketball: Kiki Iriafen trending up, Dominique Malonga falling

0

Change is the one thing you can always count on, both in sports and in life. While consistency is what fantasy managers strive for, the reality is that player performance can swing wildly over a long season.

Trying to keep up with all the highs and lows across 44 games and four months can feel overwhelming. That’s why breaking things down week by week makes it easier to stay grounded and focused on what matters right now.

That’s the goal of my Risers and Fallers column. It helps you track momentum shifts as they happen, using insights pulled directly from ESPN’s fantasy metrics.

Risers

Kiki Iriafen, F, Washington Mystics (77.7% rostered, +39.1)

The Mystics are off to a surprisingly strong start this season, and Iriafen is making an immediate impact in the frontcourt. The rookie has played 28 or more minutes in each of her first three games and scored at least 20 fantasy points in all of them- — including one with 33.

Through three games, Iriafen is tied with Paige Bueckers for the second-most PPG among rookies, trailing only teammate Sonia Citron (14.7). She is also tied for sixth in RPG (10.0) across the league with Jonquel Jones. With that kind of production, Iriafen has emerged as a legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year — and her rising roster percentage reflects it. She is shaping up to be a season-long asset for fantasy managers.

Jessica Shepard, F, Minnesota Lynx (49.1% rostered, +41.7)

Shepard has gotten off to a strong start this season. She has played 29 or more minutes in two of the Lynx’s first three games and scored 24 or more fantasy points in both of them. Shepard missed the 2024 season while playing overseas but averaged 8.1 PPG, 7.1 RPG, and 3.2 APG in 26.7 minutes in 2023 with the Lynx. While she is coming off the bench this season behind Alanna Smith, Shepard should continue to be a key contributor, especially with Dorka Juhász out for the season due to personal reasons. She currently leads the team in rebounds and is a strong add if you need help at the forward/center position.

Temi Fagbenle, C, Golden State Valkyries (51.7% rostered, +43.6)

Fagbenle has delivered for the Valkyries early in the season, logging 27 or more minutes and scoring 23 or more fantasy points in back-to-back games. Fagbenle had a career-best season in 2024 with the Indiana Fever while sharing the frontcourt Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith and averaged 14.4 fantasy points per game in just 18.9 minutes.

Fagbenle’s durability remains a question at 32 years old, especially after not playing in the league from 2020 to 2023, but Golden State’s squad offers her the opportunity to finally secure the consistent role that’s eluded her for much of her career. If you need a F/C who can fill up the stat sheet across the board, Fagbenle is worth a serious look.

Tiffany Hayes, G, Golden State Valkyries (76.6% rostered, +20.9)

Hayes came out of retirement for the 2024 season, joined the Las Vegas Aces, and ended up winning Sixth Player of the Year. She averaged 17.4 fantasy points in just 21.5 minutes per game last year. After signing with the Valkyries this offseason, I expected the veteran guard to play a significant role in a backcourt without much experience — and that’s what happened in the season opener. Hayes dropped 35 fantasy points in 30 minutes during Golden State’s season opener against the Sparks on May 16.

She’s currently dealing with a nose injury, but it doesn’t appear to be serious. Fantasy managers who selected Hayes late in drafts or off waivers may have landed a season-long contributor.

Fallers

Dominique Malonga, C, Seattle Storm (39.6% rostered, -19.3%)

Malonga entered the league with high expectations as the No. 2 overall pick, boasting a strong international résumé and rare size-skill combination. At just 19, she’s already been a starter overseas and played for France’s national team. But through her first two WNBA games, she’s logged just 11 minutes total. Head coach Noelle Quinn attributed the low usage to matchups, not performance.

Seattle’s deep frontcourt featuring Nneka Ogwumike, Ezi Magbegor, Alysha Clark, and Li Yueru remains a hurdle. The good news? Malonga’s long-term ceiling remains sky-high. However, she is currently a faller in fantasy formats until her role grows, and consistent minutes materialize.

Shakira Austin, C, Washington Mystics (41.0% rostered, -13.3%)

Austin has long been viewed as a breakout candidate, but persistent injuries continue to derail her fantasy value. She has played just 17 minutes this season and is now in concussion protocol after also dealing with a leg injury.

Austin was ejected in her season debut and came off the bench in both appearances. While she averaged 24.0 fantasy points per game in just under 20 minutes last season, Austin is not worth rostering until she proves she’s healthy and locked into a consistent role. Stefanie Dolson and Iriafen are better fantasy options on the Mystics right now.

New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge Defends Slumping Teammate

0

New York Yankees star hitter Aaron Judge is more than just an offensive powerhouse for the Pinstripes: he also serves as the team’s captain. Judge’s leadership chops shone brightly this weekend when he came to the defense of a teammate going through a slump.

Oswald Peraza was once the Yankees’ top prospect, but has had a difficult time this season producing on offense. His batting average is currently a .167 in 72 at-bats, with only 11 runs on the board and 9 RBIs. It’s not the first time Peraza has taken a dip; he was reassigned to the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, last summer. The team acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the same time, though Chisholm Jr. is now injured and awaiting return.

Judge gave Peraza a vote of confidence this past weekend after the third baseman hit an RBI double against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, jumpstarting the Yankees’ killer 13-1 win.

“Give him a chance to play every single day,” Judge said, via The Athletic. “Good things are going to happen.”

Earlier this month, Peraza discussed his methods for improvement with The Athletic, noting that he was spending his time not playing learning from his teammates, which surely include Judge, who leads the American League in runs, home runs, batting average and on base percentage.

“I’m getting a lot of experience,” Peraza said. “But if I’m not playing every day, I’m watching the game. A lot of my teammates are superstars, and I talk with my teammates every day.”

Despite his struggles and the looming return of a superior player who would be sure to cut into his time on the field, Peraza reaffirmed his commitment to getting better and delivering results for New York.

“I want to play every day for the New York Yankees,” Peraza said. “I can’t control that. I practice every day. I want to play every day. For sure, I want to play here for a long time.”

New Footage Reveals Harsh Alyssa Thomas Throat Strike that Preceded Kiki Iriafen Foul

0

The May 25 game between the Washington Mystics and Phoenix Mercury did not come without extracurricular activity, especially between veteran Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas and Mystics rookie forward Kiki Iriafen.

These two were matched up for most of the game (which the Mercury ended up winning 68-62), and both players also produced solid performances. Thomas finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists on 34 minutes played, while Iriafen tallied 11 points (despite only taking four field goal attempts) to go along with 13 rebounds in 26 minutes played.

However, the biggest story of this matchup was the physical play between them that led to free throws for both teams. The example of this that went most viral was Iriafen being called for a technical foul after seemingly talking trash to Thomas after making a layup on her during the fourth quarter.

But a recent fan video has since surfaced on social media, showing what likely led to Iriafen getting chirpy with Thomas.

In the third quarter, Thomas was called for a flagrant foul when she and Iriafen were preparing to go after a rebound during a free throw. As the shot went up, Thomas struck Iriafen in the throat before the two jockeyed for position. This led to Thomas receiving a flagrant foul call.

X user @kfpmixx_ posted a video of Thomas’ throat strike on Iriafen after a screenshot of Iriafen trash-talking Thomas with the caption, “The flagrant that led to this response”.

Thomas has a history of being harsh on rookies, as she choke-slammed Chicago Sky star Angel Reese during Reese’s rookie 2024 season, which led to Thomas getting ejected from that game.

Thomas clearly isn’t keen to let rookies get the upper hand on her.
