French Open 2025 live updates: Semifinal latest as Sinner defeats Djokovic in epic to set up Alcaraz final

0

Ultimately, it solidified the men’s tennis order of the moment. Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who will meet in Sunday’s final, are just a couple levels better than everyone else. They hit harder. They run faster. They have more magic in their hands.

They see a ball streaming over the net that would make everyone else feel hopeless, and they sense an opportunity, not just to win a point but to snuff out any thought that the impossible might be beyond their reach.

Djokovic used every ounce of his determination, power, creativity and experience to nudge Sinner out of his comfort zone.

But for one game late in the second set, when Djokovic got his first break points against him in nearly seven full sets of tennis and sneaked within shouting distance of levelling the match, Sinner had every answer.

Then came the tiebreak that looked set to be a microcosm of the match, before Sinner did what Sinner does when he’s had enough. He got his toes up on the baseline and let his arm fly and pinned Djokovic in the back court.

Djokovic fought his way forward. Down 2-0, with the chance to get proceedings back on serve, he got to the net, took dead aim at a short lob and pounded it into the net.

His shoulders dropped, the air left his lungs. His head sagged. Sinner finally had the lead he was never going to relinquish.

2025 NFL OTA takeaways: Shedeur Sanders hype gaining steam; Colts’ Anthony Richardson out indefinitely

0

With the calendar flipping from May to June, it’s time for organized team activities (OTAs) all around the league. All 32 teams have turned the page from all things 2024 and are now gathering and getting themselves ready for the upcoming 2025 season.

This is the first time we’re getting to see or hear from a lot of veteran players since last season ended — or since they signed with or got traded to their new teams this offseason — so it’s an important time to take stock of some of the various goings-on around the league.

With that in mind, let’s highlight a few of the key takeaways from the first week of OTA action around the NFL

All aboard the Shedeur Sanders hype train

Sanders is having a strong start to minicamp, creating a lot of hype regarding whether he can earn the starting job in Week 1. The quarterback stats are there, but keep in mind all players are wearing shells and shorts. It’s not surprising to see a player look good in the early portion of OTAs. Sanders did go 9 of 14 with three touchdowns in the second OTA practice open to the media this week, while third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel went 11 of 20 for three touchdowns.

Training camp will be the tell-tale sign.

Richardson sidelined; Jones getting Colts’ first-team reps

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is sidelined with a right shoulder injury, head coach Shane Steichen announced. Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his throwing shoulder that plagued him last season and he will be out indefinitely. The Colts hope to have Steichen back by minicamp.

Daniel Jones will get all the first-team reps with Richardson out. Jones may have the upper hand in the race for the starting quarterback job.

Giants OTA session end early after multiple fights

Things got a little heated during New York’s sixth OTA session on Thursday. So much so that the session ended early due a string of fights. Pass rusher Brian Burns and left tackle James Hudson reportedly got into a scrap where the two pushed and shoved before taking off their helmets and squaring up.

On the very next play after that scuffle, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Jermaine Eluemunor got into it with Thibodeaux taking a swing at at the veteran offensive tackle. After those scrums, head coach Brian Daboll got the team together and ended practice for the day.

Cam Ward looks sharp at Titans OTAs

The No. 1 overall pick looks like he’s fitting in quite well with the Tennessee Titans. As the club goes through OTAs leading up to the start of mandatory minicamp, the official X account posted a clip of Ward during Thursday’s session throwing a dart to fourth-round rookie Chimere Dike for a touchdown.

During his final collegiate season, Ward threw 39 passing touchdowns, which led FBS and set a new school record at Miami.

Michael Pittman Jr. leaves OTA practice with apparent injury

Anthony Richardson missing the Colts’ upcoming minicamp due to a shoulder injury wasn’t the only injury news coming out of Indy on Thursday. As noted by The Athletic, star wideout Michael Pittman Jr. got tangled up while running a route during the OTA session and went down. He limped off the field and did not return.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett threw a tight touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy in the back of the end zone in a red zone 7-on-7 drill Wednesday for his best throw of OTAs, per ESPN. Following six plays, veteran Joe Flacco subbed in to work with the first team. It appears to be a two-man race to be the Browns’ Week 1 starting quarterback.

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice fully participates in OTA practice

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice’s 2024 season ended in Week 4 after he underwent knee surgery to repair ligament damage, but he was a full participant and “had a good day” in Wednesday’s OTA practice, according to The Kansas City Star.

No. 1 overall pick QB Cam Ward, former Miami WR Xavier Restrepo shining

Tennessee made 2025 first overall pick quarterback Cam Ward feel right at home by signing one of his top Miami Hurricanes targets in wide receiver Xavier Restrepo after the latter went undrafted. Their connection flashed multiple times at the Titans’ OTA practice on Tuesday.

“Ward and receiver Xavier Restrepo have great chemistry from their days at the University of Miami, and it was on full display on Tuesday,” Jim Wyatt of TennesseeTitans.com reported. “Ward connected with Restrepo on a bullet across the middle early, and he hit Restrepo again in a team period with cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. on his hip.”

Seahawks’ Macdonald endorses Darnold after shaky OTA debut

Apparently, Sam Darnold didn’t have his best day throwing the ball on the first day of OTAs open to reporters in Seattle. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald fielded some questions about Darnold’s status as the team’s definitive starting quarterback even though he is less than three months off signing a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the team.

Macdonald was emphatic in his answer. “It’s just not going to happen,” he said of the possibility of someone other than Darnold being the team’s QB, via ESPN. “Sam’s our starting quarterback. We love him. He’s doing a tremendous job.”

While there might be some parallels to be drawn between Darnold’s free-agent contract and the presence of third-round pick Jalen Milroe on the roster and the situation that led to Russell Wilson earning the job as the team’s quarterback back in 2012, as ESPN also noted, Darnold is making considerably more money in today’s terms than Matt Flynn was back then. And he’s also coming off a much more successful season than Flynn was at the time he signed with Seattle, when he basically had one good game that earned him a sizable deal on the open market.

Travis Hunter’s inhuman ball skills on display

We knew well in advance of his being drafted that Travis Hunter was a rare football player. He was an All-American and Heisman Trophy winner at Colorado, thanks to his dynamic two-way play.

And during his college career, Hunter’s best attribute was his incredible skill with the ball in the air on both offense (where he won the Fred Biletnikoff Award last season while racking up 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns) and defense (where he won the Chuck Bednarik Award and intercepted seven passes over the last two years).

So it should come as no surprise that Hunter, who reportedly worked mostly as a wide receiver during the Jaguars’ rookie minicamp, is also showing out at OTAs as a defender. He came down with a pretty ridiculous, one-handed interception that showed exactly why he’s such a rare talent.

Texans not worried about banged-up star QB

C.J. Stroud has been sitting out of Texans OTAs with what was originally termed a pectoral issue, but head coach DeMeco Ryans now says it’s “general” soreness in Stroud’s shoulder. Ryans, though, says that it’s not a long-term issue and the team isn’t concerned.

“We’re taking extra precaution with him, but he’ll be good to go. No concerns on my end there,” Ryans told the media after practice Tuesday.

Pressed further, Ryans said, “What I said, that’s it for him. It’s general soreness, and we’re taking extra precaution with him. We’re not gonna rush him into anything. He’ll be fine. When the moment is for him to be ready to go, he’ll be ready to go.”

Eagles rookie out until camp

Jihaad Campbell fell to the end of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft at least in part due to injury concerns, and it appears those injury issues will keep him out for a while longer. In fact, the Eagles don’t expect Campbell to hit the field until training camp.

“He won’t hit the practice field until sometime in August,” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “We’re doing all we can, he’s doing all he can in meetings. We’re doing all we can with him on the field. I take him to the side and do an individual drill with him that’s suited to what he can do right now. He’s working good and trying to pick it up.”

Ridley embraces Ward’s ‘f— it mentality’

Anything having to do with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft is always considered notable, and that’s definitely the case when his No. 1 wide receiver is hyping up his attitude and approach to the game. So it’s worth highlighting the fact that Calvin Ridley is already a big fan of Titans quarterback Cam Ward.

“I honestly want to hear what he [Ward] thinks,” Ridley said Tuesday, via Main Street Media. “So I just want to be in the spot where he wants me. So I ask him first, ‘What did I do wrong on a play?’ no matter the throw or the catch or whatever it is. ‘What do I need to do to make you feel better,’ and then I try to pick his brain … That’s pretty much what we’re doing. It’s easier for me to relate to him. He’s easy to relate to. He’s easy to talk ball with. I just like him a lot.”

Ridley also went through what it was like to connect with Ward outside of football, and how that shed light on what it’ll be like to play with him.

“He came to my house before and my brothers met him, and the first thing they said when he left was, ‘Man, he’s just calm and relaxed,'” Ridley said. “I mean, you need that at the quarterback position. You can’t be an over-thinker, jittery guy. You’ve got to kind of be OK with f—ing up and doing good. You’ve got to have that f— it mentality, and he’s kind of got that.”

Ward definitely had that kind of mentality during his time at Miami, and prior to that at Washington State and Incarnate Word. He’s a fantastic playmaker who has the utmost confidence in himself to make any and every throw that could even potentially become available to him. Sometimes that could get him into trouble with turnovers, but he was also able to turn the page from those mistakes and still consistently lead his team to wins.

Pickens getting comfortable

The early reviews for George Pickens at Cowboys OTAs have been strong.

The mercurial wide receiver, who came out for OTAs with a new jersey number (he’s now No. 3 after trading with defensive lineman Dante Fowler Jr., who will wear No. 13), apparently made the catch of the day on Tuesday while CeeDee Lamb sat out the session. Pickens is expected to be the No. 2 target for Dak Prescott (who was back at practice after the birth of his second child) and, while it’s obviously very early, any reports of them developing an early rapport have to be welcome.

More in store for Flowers

Baltimore Ravens wideout Zay Flowers is fully healthy after the late-season knee injury that sidelined him for the playoffs last season, and it seems that offensive coordinator Todd Monken has big plans for the third-year receiver in 2025.

“We’ve just got to get him the ball more,” Monken said Tuesday, via the team’s official website. “He’s an unbelievable football player. He’s not only an outside receiver that has elite route-running skills, but he’s unbelievable with the ball in his hands. So you have a guy that really plays two spots.

“I’m not sure he can use that in his contract negotiations. But I’m just saying you can use him in a variety of roles to get him the ball, which allows your volume to go up. He’s a volume catch guy. You can use him in novelty screens, getting him the ball down the field. I expect him to take another leap. When you make it to the Pro Bowl, or you’re an All-Pro, you’re pretty good.”

Flowers is coming off a sophomore campaign where he hauled in 74 passes for 1,059 yards and four touchdowns and got named to the Pro Bowl. As Monken noted, you can use him in a variety of roles: According to Tru Media, he lined up in the slot on 41.7% of his routes and out wide on 58.2%. He was credited with 18 receptions on screens, which tied for 11th most among all wide receivers, and his 26 explosive catches ranked 13th among wideouts.

Flowers isn’t actually eligible for a new contract yet, but if he has the kind of year that Monken is expecting, then he’ll certainly have some leverage when he enters extension talks next offseason.

Emily Ratajkowski has no shortage of sexy bikinis.

Ratajkowski opted for all Gucci accessories, including gold hoop earrings and a brown purse complete with a red-and-green strap.

The 2025 French Open is nearly complete. Both the men’s and women’s finals are set and both feature showdows of the top seeds in the tournament.

On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are set to battle it out for their first French Open crown. Sabalenka eliminated three-time reigning champion Iga Swiatek in the semifinals while Gauff took out hometown upstart Lois Boisson.

The two have played each other 10 times and have split evenly at 5-5. Sabalenka defeated Gauff in their last meeting at the Madrid Open final last month. This will be their third meeting at a Grand Slam event with Sabalenka defeating Gauff at the 2024 Australian Open semifinal and Gauff besting Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final for her first major title.

On the men’s side, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed, continues to look like one of the best in the world on clay after running through Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinal. The battle of two top clay court players ended in a walkover for Alcaraz after he’d built a two-set-to-one lead.

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner is still looking for his first French Open victory and inched closer with a straight-set victory over the legendary Novak Djokovic in the semifinal. With the victory, Sinner advanced to the French Open final for the first time in his career.

This will be the first time Sinner and Alcaraz have met in a Grand Slam final, though they did meet in last year’s semifinals, with Alcaraz edging out the win in five sets.

Gemini just caught up to ChatGPT in one key way — here’s how to schedule AI tasks

0

Google’s Gemini app is evolving to become more proactive.

Starting today, some Gemini users can take advantage of a new feature called “Scheduled Actions” which lets the AI assistant handle recurring or time-specific tasks automatically.

Google Gemini can now handle scheduled tasks like an assistant

0

Google is taking another step toward making Gemini a more helpful assistant. It’s rolling out “scheduled actions,” a feature AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can use to ask the AI assistant to perform tasks at specific times, like providing a summary of their calendar at the end of each day or generating ideas for blog posts every Monday.

Users can also have Gemini complete one-off tasks using this feature, such as asking for a summary of an award show the day after it happens, Google says. “Just tell Gemini what you need and when, and it will take care of the rest,” the company writes in a post announcing the change.

David Beckham to be knighted in King’s birthday honours

0

David Beckham will be awarded a knighthood next week after years of appeals from fans for the former England and Manchester United footballer to receive Britain’s highest honour.

Beckham’s knighthood will be announced in the King’s birthday honours list and will mean that the former England captain’s wife, Victoria, will be known as Lady Beckham.

Beckham, capped 115 times for the national team, has long been tipped to be knighted, but has remained an OBE — an honour he received in 2003.

Now a friend of the King, Beckham has become a supporter of the King’s Foundation and was made a charity ambassador by Charles last year. He visited Highgrove to learn more about the charity.

Beckham said at the time: “I’m excited to be working with The King’s Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity’s work.

They debuted in 2002 at £35m. Now Brand Beckham is worth £500m

“I’ve always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I’m particularly looking forward to supporting the foundation’s education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature.

“Having developed a love for the countryside I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation’s work.

“It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty’s foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens — and compare beekeeping tips.”

In May, Charles and Camilla visited the RHS Chelsea Flower Show along with Beckham as they launched a new “harmony” project to encourage more people into horticulture.

Beckham’s attendance at the west London event was the latest in a series of public and private invitations that have been extended to the footballer by the palace. He also joined the state banquet for the Emir of Qatar at Buckingham Palace in December.

Beckham, along with Alan Titchmarsh, will also help the King with a new “harmony campaign” which is designed to “encourage young people to consider careers in horticulture, to protect our green spaces and natural environment for future generations”.

The former Manchester United star, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, wore one of the King’s Roses in his buttonhole for the royal visit. As the Queen gestured at his newest adornment, he said: “It’s so beautiful, so beautiful, congratulations.”

The King was also overheard asking Beckham: “You got it, didn’t you?”

The former footballer replied: “It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.”

Letters inviting recipients to accept honours are sent out weeks in advance.

Beckham was also spotted in the queue for the Queen’s funeral after she died in September 2022.

Beckham’s knighthood comes after reports that his eldest son, Brooklyn, and Brooklyn’s wife, Nicola Peltz, missed his 50th birthday celebrations. Brooklyn did, however, accept an invitation to a dinner with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their house in Montecito, California.

Beckham is best known for his spell with the Red Devils, where he played from 1992-2003, winning the Champions League and several Premier League titles, among other trophies. He then moved to Real Madrid, and also had spells in the US with LA Galaxy, in France with Paris Saint-Germain and Italy with AC Milan.

Buckingham Palace and No 10 declined to comment.
