Angel City wears ‘Immigrant City Football Club’ shirts

0

Angel City FC players and staff wore T-shirts and read a pregame message declaring their support for immigrants on Saturday, a day of protest against ICE raids throughout Los Angeles.

The front of the black T-shirts read: “Immigrant City Football Club.”

The back featured the phrases: “Los Angeles is for everyone” and “Los Ángeles es Para Todos.”

The club was the first of the city’s 11 major professional sports teams to release a statement in support of those impacted by immigration raids during the past week focused on Los Angeles County and surrounding areas.

Angel City gave out “Immigrant City Football Club” shirts to the first 10,000 fans at Saturday’s match against the North Carolina Courage.

Singer Becky G, a founding investor in Angel City, read the following statement as players walked onto the field for introductions before the game:

“At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that Los Angeles is stronger because of its diversity and the people and the families who shape it, love it, and call it home.

Angel City gave away shirts to fans at BMO Stadium. The back read "Los Angeles is for everyone" in English and Spanish.

“This club does not exist without immigrants.

“This is our home.

“This is LA.

Dodgers Week 13 review: Last October’s pattern to beat Padres & Giants

0

The Dodgers won two out of three games against both the Padres and Giants last week, which strengthened their hold on first place.

Finally playing their longtime rivals asburdly far into the season, the Dodgers were also playing their closest pursuers in the standings. That made for a potential playoff preview, which makes sense considering the Dodgers have played a National League West team in the NLDS in each of the last five postseasons.

But the week was also a playoff review, as the Dodgers’ pitching usage mirrored that of last October. Once a game got out of hand, the Dodgers pivoted to innings-eating mode, saving the higher-leverage arms for use in a more competitive game. The most extreme example was Matt Sauer wearing it on the mound on Tuesday to the tune of nine runs and 13 hits over 4⅔ innings, and Kiké Hernández appearing in the sixth inning (!!) and recording the final seven outs, the longest pitching outing by a Dodgers position player since World War II.

Justin Wrobleski, passed over for a start during the Padres series, instead ate the final 13 outs of Friday’s loss to the Giants, Hernández even got into a game the Dodgers were winning, getting two outs in the ninth inning on Saturday.

They’ll add another fresh arm on Monday as well, perhaps you’ve heard of him.

Batter of the week

Shohei Ohtani homered twice in Saturday’s win and led the regulars in hits, extra-base hits, and OPS during the week. He also led with seven runs scored, and on the season has more runs scored (73) than games the Dodgers have played (72). Dating back to last August 9, Ohtani has scored 135 runs in the Dodgers last 135 games, including the postseason. Oh yeah, and he’s also pitching on Monday.

Honorable mention goes to Teoscar Hernández, who drove in seven runs and snapped out of a slump by homering in three straight games from Wednesday to Saturday.

Pitcher of the week

Clayton Kershaw had his longest start since 2023, pitching seven scoreless innings on Saturday, lowering his ERA against the Giants to 2.0033 in a tidy 404⅓ career innings. We’ve done 420 of these weekly reviews dating back to 2009, and Kershaw has won pitcher of the week 114 times (27.1 percent).

Week 13 results

4-2 record
32 runs scored (5.33 per game)
35 runs allowed (5.83 per game)
.459 pythagorean win percentage

Year to date

43-29 record
399 runs scored (5.54 per game)
328 runs allowed (4.56 per game)
.589 pythagorean win percentage (42-30)

Standing: 1st place in NL West, two games up on San Francisco

Transactions

Monday: Veteran pitcher Chris Stratton, who was designated for assignment for a second time on June 7, cleared waivers, was sent outright to Triple-A, and elected free agency instead.

Tuesday: Right-hander Matt Sauer was called up for a bulk outing, and ended up taking one for the team in extreme fashion. José Ureña was designated for assignment.

Tuesday: Right-hander Ryan Loutos, who was designated for assignment on June 6, was claimed off waivers by the Nationals.

Friday: Ureña cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Saturday: Left-hander Garrett McDaniels, who was selected by the Angels in the Rule 5 Draft in December, was returned to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers run the Nate Colbert gauntlet to finish the homestand, with four more games against the Padres before the Nationals come to down. The order below is an educated guess, but the rotation this week will include Shohei Ohtani’s pitching debut on Monday, a fully-stretched-out Ben Casparius (possibly following Ohtani on Monday), and the return of Emmet Sheehan.

LAFC’s journey to the FIFA Club World Cup was marked by a significant victory over Liga MX’s Club América in a playoff match in May. Since earning the bid, LAFC has further bolstered its squad by acquiring star forward Javairo Dilrosun from Club América. He will be on loan to the team until July 24 and will be a key player in the FIFA Club World Cup.

On the other side, the London club has made some intriguing changes to its roster for the upcoming tournament. Notable players such as Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix and Axel Disasi have been left out. Jessica Alba Celebrates Ex-Husband Cash Warren on Father’s Day After Divorce

0

  • Jessica Alba shared a touching tribute to her ex-husband, Cash Warren, for Father’s Day on June 15.
  • Alba shared a throwback picture of Warren with their three children, Honor, Haven, and Hayes, along with a sweet message.
  • The couple divorced earlier this year.

Jessica Alba and Cash Warren may have parted ways earlier this year, but it’s clear that the actress still thinks of her ex as an amazing dad. The pair share three children, daughters Honor and Haven, and son Hayes. On Father’s Day, June 15, Alba shared a touching tribute to her ex-husband in an Instagram Story.

The story featured throwback pictures of Warren holding Hayes shortly after he was born—the photo was presumably taken in early 2018 as Hayes was a New Year’s Eve baby. The couple’s daughters, Honor and Haven, looked on. “Our babies couldn’t have a better dad—warm, kind, present, always knowing just what to say,” she wrote across the image. “I admire your patience and the way you hold space for them, making them feel safe and light after every conversation. Thank you for being their rock.”

Alba wrote a touching tribute to Warren on Instagram.

Alba then posted a second Father’s Day tribute to actor Michael Warren, Cash’s father. “& to our sweet Papo @MichaelWarrenPhotoFantasy—you’ve been a beacon for Cash, Koa, Grayson, and Makayla,” she wrote. “From the moment you came into my life, your love and support have always been so genuine. Your grandbabies are lucky to have you in their corner, and I’m grateful for the example you’ve set for Cash—fathering with compassion, heart, humor, and kindness.”

Alba also gave a shout out to Michael Warren, her childrens’ grandfather.

Alba and Warren were married for nearly 17 years before splitting in January. At the time, a source told People that the pair were still “friends and all about the kids.”

Since their divorce, Alba and Warren have reunited several times to spend time as a family with their children. They posed together in a photo for Easter and later came together again for their daughter Haven’s middle school graduation on June 6.

Nintendo Direct: Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2 gets a big showcase

0

Nintendo will stream a Donkey Kong Bananza Direct presentation on Wednesday, June 18, starting at 6 a.m. PDT / 9 a.m. EDT / 2 p.m. BST. On the Nintendo Today app, it was confirmed that the newest Nintendo Direct showcase will present “roughly 15 minutes of information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game.”

Since announcing the title back in its April Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo has slow-dripped information to the public regarding the brand-new DK adventure. But here’s what we know.

Donkey Kong Bananza is a 3D adventure game where players guide a cartoonishly charming redesigned DK as he locates golden bananas before an evil group called VoidCo. can get to them first. Odd Rock joins DK as his companion as the king of the Kongs wreaks havoc in this brand-new adventure, with the ability to smash up the locale and environment around him, which Polygon detailed in an early hands-on impression.

The game previously suffered from a leak, showing off a baby-looking version of Pauline accompanying DK on his journey in place of the purple creature. Pauline could be seen in the leaked screenshots wearing a purple bracelet resembling Odd Rock’s material and design, leading some players to believe that the two characters are connected. As for additional Kongs, Cranky Kong was shown in the trailer, but no other monkey family members have been revealed. Yet.

Nintendo will release Donkey Kong Bananza on the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17.

Feisty Keegan Bradley fires back at US Open boasts as Justin Thomas identifies Oakmont issue

American Ryder Cup skipper hits back at course chat from chiefs

Keegan Bradley(Image: PA)

Feisty Keegan Bradley has shot down boasts from US Open chiefs as he surged into contention at Oakmont.

The United States Ryder Cup captain has taken issue with comments made prior to the tournament by official John Bodenhamer, who claimed the aim of the organisers was to ensure players got all 15 clubs dirty during the championship.

Fourteen in their golf bags and the one between their ears.

However, Bradley sniped back at that statement as he stated all of the game’s major stars are ready for the challenges and tests of Major events.

He said: “I think that the USGA can say all they want, but we’re professional golfers. This is what we do for a living.

“I don’t agree with that. I think that we go out here every day and try to be professionals and we know when it comes to a major, whether it’s a US Open, British Open, Masters, PGA, that we have to be on top of our game mentally. The USGA is not doing that, we’re doing that.”

Bradley is fighting to catch Sam Burns, who is a strong contender to make his team for Bethpage in September, and he added: “He’s such a great player and he’s been trending.

“Every time I play with him, he seems to have a US Open mentality.

“I was watching him and I just kept saying: It looks like he’s up for the challenge today and he was.”

Bradley is delighted with Burns, but he won’t seeing another of his high-ranking Ryder Cup hopefuls over the weekend after Justin Thomas missed a US Open cut for the third successive time.

Thomas has enjoyed a good start to 2025 with a win at the RBC Heritage and a host of Top 10 finishes, but he was out of sorts at Oakmont.

He said: “It sucks. I’m frustrated because I feel like I should be playing way better in majors, but I haven’t, so clearly I need to do something differently.

“It’s easy to be bummed or not too positive at the moment, but I’ve had a really solid year and played really well. I just wasn’t sharp at all

“I felt like I really didn’t play that bad on Thursday. I had four tee balls that were 50-50 in the air of being in the fairway or not, and all four of them were not, and played those holes five-over, so that can happen out there.

“I was very far from sharp and just didn’t play well. Oakmont is right in front of you.

“You kind of know what you’re getting here. It’s tough and you can’t fake it around here and not play well and expect good things to happen.”

Olivier Giroud on facing a very ‘different’ Chelsea and seeing ‘where MLS stands’ vs Europe

0

Olivier Giroud has fond flashbacks of his time with Chelsea, enough of them that in normal circumstances, Monday would be cause for a series of happy reconnections, albeit amid a backdrop of competitive hostility.

The LAFC forward and French World Cup winner takes on his former team in Club World Cup action in Atlanta (3pm ET, 8pm UK) and speaks with a smile about occasions such as big Champions League victories, or, during an interview with The Athletic last week, his goal from the 2018 FA Cup semifinal.

That particular highlight, a penalty box dance party that left half the Southampton team sprawling on their backsides before Giroud clipped the ball beyond Alex McCarthy, lights up his face. He remembers N’Golo Kanté gleefully chuckling over a goal that set the team on course for one of his three trophies during a three-season spell at Stamford Bridge.

“Oli,” Kanté joked with his trademark good nature. “I didn’t think you were capable of that.”

But while Monday will be a reunion in one sense, in another, it is anything but, which puts in stark focus how much Chelsea has changed since Giroud left for Milan in 2021.

Giroud scores against Southampton in the 2018 FA Cup semifinal (Kieran Galvin/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

“Everything is different,” he said. “From the ownership, the manager… also people working for the club, communication, marketing, not much is staying. But I hope I will see some familiar faces.”

Reece James and Trevor Chalobah remain at Chelsea from Giroud’s time, and that’s about it.

Now 38, Giroud has been impressed by how Enzo Maresca’s ultra-youthful side performed this past season, hanging on in the hunt for a Champions League spot and eventually pouncing on the fourth position as others, Nottingham Forest included, faltered at the end.

Paired with victory in the Conference League, that accomplishment bodes well, Giroud believes, even if it didn’t constitute the most spectacular haul when compared against past glories.

“You need to be patient when you get a team with a lot of young players,” Giroud said. “(The club is) producing every year more and more players. It is a good strategy, but you can’t ask them to win the best trophies straight away, you need time to build the team to get habits and link in the team. It’s a very young team, but very talented also, so we expect a really tough game.”

Giroud shakes his head as he reflects on how quickly the years have passed by. He hasn’t had things all his own way in MLS since joining LAFC last summer, so much that it took him until April this year to notch a first league goal.

With a Club World Cup opportunity looming, however, he is keen to remind an international audience that we’re not so long removed from when he was playing in the 2022 World Cup final and just over a year since he ended a profitable stint in Serie A.

Along with LAFC and former France teammate Hugo Lloris, he could have been forgiven for thinking occasions such as this, squaring off against some of the world’s best teams in games that matter, had disappeared forever. Even two months ago, that was still the case.

Lloris will also see some familiar Premier League faces (Rich Storry/Getty Images)

But then León got kicked out of the Club World Cup, FIFA announced a play-in game between LAFC and Mexico’s Club América, the MLS side won it in extra time, and here we are.

“Yeah, it’s very true, you never know what can happen in football and I am very glad that the boys can play this competition,” Giroud said. “Maybe the first time, maybe the last time they will play it, so I will try my best to have them ready for the moment and really enjoy it.

“It is kind of a World Cup but with your club, because you go into a base camp, same system. You stay in one place and then let’s see if you go through the group stage, so it is quite a big thing. For the fans, it also means a lot and we can also see where MLS stands now compared to Europe.

“We are doing this job for these kinds of games, so we just need to seize the moment and enjoy every single moment.”

As he alluded to, it is also an opportunity to cast MLS in a more positive global light, with the performances of LAFC, Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders doubling as a referendum of sorts on the league. A signature win against a team with the profile of Chelsea would be a bold statement. Make no mistake, LAFC will go in as a sizable underdog.

Giroud insists MLS has improved a lot in the past 10 years, adding: “I know it’s not very watched in Europe, so now we have the opportunity to show what we are made of and where we stand compared with Europe.

“Club América was a great atmosphere, I loved it, it reminded me of Turkey or Greece and the crazy atmosphere,” said Giroud. However, LAFC will not have any kind of home city advantage in the tournament, with all its group games stationed outside of California. “I hope that we will have some of our fans that will travel because they are very important to us.

“We have to dream, it is the time to, but it is also the time to be focused and very demanding in every single thing we will have to do on that pitch, for 90, for 120 minutes.

“One more time, the most important thing is to say we gave everything. We don’t have any regrets and that’s most important and if they are better than us, like they should (be), shake hands and (say) thank you. I hope we will be at our maximum, really live with them in the moment.”

LAFC’s Group D campaign will continue on June 20 against Tunisia’s ES Tunis, then Brazil’s Flamengo four days later. Emerging from the group stage would be a hugely laudable achievement. In that sense, the later clashes may have even more importance, especially if Chelsea establishes a firm grip on the group.

Yet for Giroud, given his history, his memories — even with a different version of Chelsea — Monday’s game will be by far the most special.

Captain-turned-coach Dwight Yorke leads Trinidad and Tobago’s football World Cup dream

0

Dwight Yorke, learning from the great Sir Alex Ferguson

Given that Yorke has been managed and mentored by some of the game’s finest managers, it is far from unexpected that he is now pursuing the same path.

The striker was signed by English giants Manchester United in 1998 by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in Premier League history with 13 titles.

Yorke came into a successful setup which brought even more silverware: in his first season alone, he won the treble (Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League) and went on to seize three consecutive league titles with the Red Devils.

The Trinidadian and Tobagonian was undoubtedly influenced by Sir Alex, not just on the pitch but off it and towards the dugout.

“The mindset that I’ve taken from the gaffer is how to win football matches,” Yorke states of the former United manager, “and he’s a serial winner himself, everybody knows that.”

After retiring in 2009, Yorke needed time and patience upon entering the managerial sphere. With much persistence and patience, he landed his first job in Australia with Macarthur FC, leading them to their first major honour in the 2022 Australia Cup.

“It took me a while,” Yorke admits of the adjustment from playing to coaching. “I’ve been focusing on managing for quite some time now. I’ve obviously had some experience in the past as well. We have made some really good progress in the months since I’ve taken over the job.”

The former national team captain arrived at the helm of the twin islands last November, having previously served as assistant coach for a brief spell following retirement.

Carlos Ortiz starts with a bogey

0

One day after dicing up one of the sport’s toughest courses (65), Sam Burns backed it up with another exemplary performance yesterday. He fought his driver, missing half of Oakmont’s fairways in Round 3, but leaned on exceptional iron play and short game magic. Burns led all players in Round 3 in strokes gained approach, picking up nearly 3.8 shots on the field in that metric alone. He ranked fourth in the field in strokes gained around the green, leading him to a 4-of-6 scrambling day.

Last summer at Royal Troon Golf Club, Burns had his previous best chance to date of winning one of the game’s premier championships. He was part of a six-way tie for second entering the final round, one stroke behind leader Billy Horschel. Burns stumbled to a final round 80, finishing in a tie for 31st place. There’s closer heartbreak in the rearview mirror, too. A week ago, Burns missed a five-foot putt that would have given him a win at the RBC Canadian Open, which ultimately went to Ryan Fox.

Burns is an immensely talented and decorated player who has found success at every level of the sport. He won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the best college player in the country at LSU. He’s been on each of the last two U.S. Presidents Cup teams and made his Ryder Cup debut in Rome two years ago. The biggest step yet in an ascendant career can come Sunday at one of American golf’s great venues.
