Just a week after the owner of the building that houses Young Joni sued the restaurateur after lease negotiations allegedly stalled, Ann Kim announced Monday she will close the award-winning Minneapolis restaurant this fall.
Vestalia Hospitality, the company that owns Young Joni, said the restaurant will close Sept. 14 after they failed to come to terms on a lease renewal with Lander Group.
Opened in 2016 in northeast Minneapolis, Young Joni won national acclaim for its wood-fired pizzas and globally inspired dishes. It was the Star Tribune’s restaurant of the year in 2017, when it was called “brilliant” and an “experience that feels wholly, unabashedly forward-thinking, in every way.”
“Young Joni has been delivering exceptional food and hospitality for nearly a decade and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created,” Kim said in a statement. “It’s my hope that the contributions we’ve made will continue to have a positive and lasting impact on the vibrancy and life of the neighborhood.”
When Vestalia, the company Kim and husband/business partner Conrad Leifur owns, opened Young Joni, it was a major departure from their other restaurants, Pizzeria Lola and Hello Pizza. While those two eateries were neighborhood pizza places, Young Joni, named to honor of their mothers, was bold in ambition from the start.
There are custom design touches throughout, and an open-fire grill station serves dishes beyond pizza, drawing on global inspiration to create plates that became instant classics, like the roasted Japanese sweet potato with bonito flakes.
Kim delved deeper into her culinary inspiration and was rewarded with larger national accolades, culminating in a 2019 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. It was there she delivered a barn-burner of an acceptance speech that became a rallying cry around her determination to take big risks in the face of fear.
Building off that success, Kim and Leifur expanded into Uptown, a move that also provided Kim’s biggest challenge. What had been expected to be a Mexican restaurant faltered in the 2020 global pandemic. She would eventually open that space as Sooki & Mimi, but it never found its audience. There were several iterations, including Kim’s, before it closed last year amid labor disputes.
Hugo Lloris has expressed surprise at Tottenham sacking Ange Postecoglou after their triumph in the Europa League.
The former Spurs captain praised Postecoglou for an “amazing achievement” and said he was delighted to see his old team end their 17-year wait for a trophy when they beat Manchester United in Bilbao last month. But the Los Angeles FC goalkeeper, speaking before facing Chelsea in the Club World Cup on Monday, was not expecting victory in the final against United to be followed by a managerial change.
Asked whether he was surprised when Spurs decided that European glory was not enough to keep Postecoglou after a dreadful Premier League campaign, Lloris said: “Yes, but nothing can surprise you any more. I think he deserves a lot of credit for what he achieved as a coach and I think we all have to be thankful and grateful for what he brought, especially with this trophy.”
Lloris spent 12 years at Spurs before joining LAFC in December 2023. He had several near misses in north London and knows better than most how much silverware means to Spurs.
“I think they had a really hard season,” Lloris said. “They had a lot of injuries as well that affected the team and performances. In the second part of the season it looks like they decided to go all-in for the Europa League. They made it and you just have to congratulate them because it is another way to go to the Champions League.
“If you finish 10th, 14th, 15th, 16th and if you get a chance to win a trophy on the other hand, it is just an amazing achievement. I was part of a really competitive team for many years and the target was to reach the top four but at which price? We could not find a way to win a cup, a League Cup or even a Europa League cup but we managed to go and get the top four for many years. I don’t know, it is all about the optics of the club.”
Lloris hopes that winning the Europa League will have a liberating effect on Spurs. “I am really happy for the club. We ran many years after this trophy and finally they got it and I think they deserve it. Hopefully it will make their shoulders a little bit lighter for the future and I think it is also the moment to build on this success for Spurs. Even if I am not a Spurs player, I still follow the news, the team and the results.”

Hugo Lloris believes his former club Tottenham Hotspur have lifted a weight off their shoulders after winning the Europa League and praised Ange Postecoglou for ending their 17-year wait for silverware.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper departed Spurs in February 2024 after making 447 appearances across 11 years and is set to start for Los Angeles FC in Monday’s FIFA Club World Cup clash against Chelsea.
Lloris, who previously captained Tottenham, revealed his delight at their 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao last month which ultimately was not enough to convince the Spurs hierarchy to keep Postecoglou after their worst-ever Premier League season was confirmed with a 17th-place finish.
“I am really pleased,” Lloris said of Tottenham’s triumph. “I am really happy for the club, for the people at the club, for the players.
“We ran many, many years after this trophy and finally they got it and I think they deserve it.
“Hopefully it will make their shoulders a little bit lighter for the future and I think it is also the moment to build on this success for Spurs. Even if I am not a Spurs player, I still follow the news, the team and the results.”
Postecoglou was last week replaced by Thomas Frank as head coach and when asked whether the decision surprised him, Lloris said: “No, nothing surprises me in football. But at the same time, it is hard to say something because I am on the other side. I don’t know what happened inside the club so it really hard for me to judge.
“If they made this decision it is because they believe there is another option which is better for the future of the club.
“What Ange Postecoglou did was just remarkable. He brought this Europa League trophy, he brought a lot of joy to the Spurs community, a lot of pride as well and we all have to be thankful for that.
“I am not here to discuss about the choice [of Tottenham’s new head coach]. He is a well-respected coach, He did an amazing job with Brentford. Now, like every coach, when you arrive in a new club, there is a new environment which you have to embrace. But if the club decided to appoint him, it is probably because they decide it is the best for the future.”

NORFOLK, Va. (7News) — An AMBER Alert was issued for a Virginia boy who was allegedly abducted Monday morning in Norfolk, Virginia, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).
Four-year-old Kai Foreman was last seen with Tyli Nekah Scott, 27, in the 900 block of East Liberty Street around 11:40 a.m.
Kai is 3-foot-6, weighs 40 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. Kai was last seen in red Crocs, blue shorts, and a grey True Religion t-shirt.
Scott is 6-foot-1, weighs 173 pounds, and has his black hair in small braids and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing khakis, a plaid or polka dot shirt, and a ski mask.
According to Norfolk Police, officers responded to the address around 11:35 a.m. for a reported shooting. There, they found a woman dead.

Angel City FC, the NWSL team based in Los Angeles, distributed T-shirts to fans on Saturday that proclaimed “Immigrant City Football Club.”
Members of the team and the coaching staff also wore the shirts before their game Saturday night against the North Carolina Courage in solidarity with immigrants in the city who have been targeted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The back of the shirts said “Los Angeles is for Everyone” in English and Spanish. The team said some 10,000 shirts were distributed.
Protests over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies broke out in Los Angeles a week ago. National Guard members and Marine troops have been sent into the city and dozens of similar protests have broken out nationwide.
Last week Angel City issued a statement on social media addressing the protests.
“We are heartbroken by the fear and uncertainty many in our Los Angeles community are feeling right now,” it said. “At Angel City, we believe in the power of belonging. We know that our city is stronger because of it’s diversity and the people and families who shape it, love it and call it home.”
The players’ unions for the NWSL and the WNBA also expressed solidarity with families “facing fear, hardship, and uncertainty tied to immigration.”
“We stand with all people seeking safety, dignity, and opportunity, no matter where they come from or where they hope to go,” the NWSLPA and WNBPA posted jointly. “Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We know not every situation is simple. But offering compassion should never be up for debate.”
Arkansas’ Gage Wood throws historic no-hitter in College World Series

Out of 119 pitches, Arkansas’ Gage Wood would only take one back.
The Razorbacks’ right-hander went seven innings without allowing a baserunner against Murray State on June 16, with the perfect game bid ultimately being broken up when Wood hit Dom Decker with a curveball that skipped off the top of Decker’s foot in a 2-2 count. It wasn’t a bad pitch. It was just the wrong one.
Ultimately, Wood still made history. He threw the first College World Series no-hitter since 1960 and struck out a ridiculous 19 Racer hitters, all while living in the mid-to-high 90s for Arkansas. The gem was needed. Arkansas’ potent offense was held in check by Isaac Silva, who allowed just one run and fanned seven of his own in six innings. Graham Kelham allowed two runs, resulting in a 3-0 win for Arkansas.
The College World Series has seen the likes of Paul Skenes, Kumar Rocker, and Gerrit Cole. None of them managed to make lineups look as overmatched as Wood made Murray State look throughout the day.
Ultimately, the result is that Arkansas lives to fight another day in the College World Series. But in the long run, Wood’s performance is going to be remembered in the annals of College World Series history no matter how far Dave Van Horn’s program goes this season. Arkansas will now play the loser of UCLA-LSU on June 17, as it looks for the first title in program history.
