YouTube has big streamers on the defense.

During a panel discussion at ADWEEK House in Cannes, Ankler Media founder Janice Min asked YouTube CEO Neal Mohan to respond to recent comments made by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. In March, Sarandos described YouTube is a platform for “killing time” while Netflix is a platform for “spending time” with premium storytelling.

“You’ve gotten under Hollywood’s skin,” Min told Mohan.

In response, Mohan said that creators are at the center of YouTube’s business model, and that the company’s mission is to help them be successful. He added that consumers choose where they spend their time.

“Who am I to say what’s spending time, engaging time, quality time, killing time?” Mohan asked. “It’s all of us as consumers—the 2 billion people that come to YouTube every single day—we get to decide how to spend our time.”

People now watch YouTube on TVs more often than on phones, the company announced in February. Nielsen reports that the platform makes up over 10% of TV watch time. Rather than that being a reflection of YouTube becoming more like traditional TV, Mohan said that TV is becoming more like YouTube as consumers demand more creator content.

YouTube’s growing as part of a robust creator economy, he argued, and brands can tap into that ecosystem by advertising on the platform.

Mohan pointed to two recent campaigns that saw significant search uplift thanks to creator partnerships on YouTube. In one, an undisclosed beauty brand saw over 250% increase in search after a creator campaign, he said. In the second campaign, Sephora saw 100% search uplift with a holiday picking campaign that used creators to produce YouTube Shorts.

YouTube has also been gunning for more professional content. The company signed a seven-year deal with the NFL in 2022 for rights to the league’s Sunday Ticket, and sports content overall has grown 30% over the past year, according to Min. YouTube has also been drawing in an audience of podcast fans that differs from other major audio platforms. True crime show Rotten Mango, for example, added roughly two million viewers by moving over to YouTube, Mohan noted.

When it came to casting the lead in DC Studios’ next big movie Clayface, the studio went with a fresh face, that being Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries.

The actor from the Uma Thurman-starring Apple TV series Suspicion and such movies as Uberto Pasolini’s The Return (starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche), the Gerard Butler action title Kandahar and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, landed the role from a competitive list of British thespians that included 28 Years Later‘s Jack O’Connell, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes‘ Tom Blyth and 1917‘s George MacKay.

The movie, from Speak No Evil director James Watkins, is the next big project for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios after next summer’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on September 11, 2026. Clayface will be shooting at Warner Bros Leavesden studio in the UK.

Clayface is shape-shifting villain in the Batman comics and got his introduction as part of Detective Comics #40 in June 1940. The original Clayface was a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime. Clayface has a body seemingly made out of clay and has appeared over the years in various films, series, animated works, video games and other forms of media.

Rhys Harries, repped by UTA, Curtis Brown Group and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, was born in Cardiff, Wales and attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. In theatre, he made his West End stage debut in 2013 in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo opposite Colin Morgan, Rupert Grint and Ben Whishaw. The actor also starred in Netflix’s Álex Pina-created series White Lines.

Producing Clayface are Gunn and Safran as well as The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Chantal Nong is executive producer. The Life of Chuck filmmaker Mike Flanagan wrote the first draft of Clayface, with additional drafts by Oscar-nominated The Wings of a Dove and Drive scribe Hossein Amini.

DC Studios is expected to make a big splash with Gunn’s Season 2 of Peacemaker at San Diego Comic-Con. DC’s Superman from Gunn is opening July 11. The movie is currently projected to open to $100M+ at the domestic box office.

Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries is set to star in the title role of “Clayface” for DC Studios, TheWrap has learned.

James Watkins, who directed last year’s remake of the Danish thriller “Speak No Evil” for Universal, is set to direct. Screenwriter Hossein Amini, best known for scripting 2011’s “Drive,” wrote the most recent draft of “Clayface.” Mike Flanagan wrote the previous draft of the script. 

The film will be produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris, with production commencing this fall.

Known as one of Batman’s most unique villains in his rogues gallery, Clayface was originally introduced in the vintage DC Comics as Basil Karlo, a horror movie actor who went mad. He later gained the ability to shape-shift and transform his body into any form by turning himself into living clay. According to an insider, the Matt Hagen version of the character will appear in the film.

The character recently made an appearance last summer on the Reeves-exec produced “Batman: The Caped Crusader” and will make an appearance in an upcoming multi-episode arc on Max’s “Creature Commandos” cartoon.

Clayface was also a staple on the hit “Batman: The Animated Series” from the ’90s. The character was rumored to be part of Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman: Part 2,” but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn shot that down on social media.

Rhys Harries most recently starred in last year’s “The Return” alongside Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Other credits include 2023’s “Kandahar” and 2019’s “The Gentlemen.” He is repped by UTA and the Curtis Brown Group in the U.K.

DC Studios will release “Clayface” on Sept. 11, 2026.

Wrexham have made their first signing of the summer transfer window as they prepare to challenge in the Championship.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club’s majority co-owners, have reportedly set aside a budget of £25 million for the summer, which has sparked plenty of discussion around their upcoming transfer business.

So far, Phil Parkinson’s side have been linked with a number of high-profile names, including West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, Tottenham’s Ben Davies and Fulham captain Tom Cairney.

The Dragons are also said to be interested in signing Reading midfielder Charlie Savage, the son of former Leicester City, Blackburn and Manchester United midfielder Robbie Savage.

But on Monday evening, Wrexham finally made their first announcement of the summer as they confirmed the signing of striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee.

Hardie, who has penned a contract until the end of the 2027/28 season, scored 74 goals in 248 games for Argyle following his move from Blackpool in January 2020.

“I’m delighted to get the move done, I’m really happy to get it done so early and I cannot wait to get going,” said Hardie, who began his career at Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

“To get a full pre-season will be a massive benefit, to get integrated into the squad and learn the way the manager plays and get to know everyone will be important.

“The last couple of seasons, it’s been good getting experience in the EFL Championship and it’s experience I can lean on now. I’ve enjoyed playing there, and I’ve managed to score a few goals, so hopefully that can continue this season.”

He added: “I love how family-oriented the club is, the community is all together and it really is a one-club City. Everything is to do with the football, and I’m really excited to be a part of that – I’ll give everything I’ve got for the badge.”

Phil Parkinson also commented on the arrival of Hardie, adding that he was “delighted” to bring him on board. “We’re looking forward to working with him and I’m sure everyone will give him a warm welcome,” added Parkinson.

As noted by the Wrexham website, Hardie has reached double figures for goals in each of the last four seasons, including the penalty that helped Argyle knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup in February.

Hardie made his professional debut with Rangers in 2014, and also spent time out on loan with Raith Rovers, St Mirren and Livingston. He also represented Scotland at youth level.

Jannik Sinner will play in his first match since his heartbreaking defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in a dramatic French Open final. The Italian was two sets to love up, had three championship points and served for the match at one point. Sinner has spoken about the need to refocus quickly, and he is back in Halle hoping to defend his title.

He takes on Yannick Hanfmann in round one. Hardie was at Rangers as a youngster, making 17 senior appearances for the Glasgow giants and spending time on loan with Raith, St Mirren and Livingston during his time at Ibrox.

He joined Blackpool in 2019, before moving on loan to Plymouth in January 2020 – scoring seven goals in 13 games as the Pilgrims won promotion to League One.

Hardie returned on loan again the following season, signing permanently in the January transfer window, winning promotion to the Championship in 2023 and also reaching the EFL Trophy Final the same year and scored 74 goals in 248 games for Plymouth.

He adds to the attacking options for Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, who signed Sam Smith from Reading and Burnley’s Jay Rodriguez in the January transfer window.

Wrexham’s squad also includes the likes of Jack Marriott, Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, though veteran former Scotland international Steven Fletcher was released following their promotion from League One last season.

Parkinson said: “I’m delighted to welcome Ryan Hardie to the club.

“We’re looking forward to working with him and I’m sure everyone will give him a warm welcome to the STōK Cae Ras.”

Dallas Wings forward Maddy Siegrist is recovering from a right knee injury that won’t require surgery but will keep her out of the lineup for some time, joining a growing list of players out for the squad, the team announced Tuesday. 

Siegrist suffered the injury in last Wednesday’s loss at Phoenix. The Wings said Monday that the injury won’t require surgery and that the third-year player is expected to make a full recovery and return to the lineup “later this season.”

The Wings said Siegrist was diagnosed with an anterolateral tibial plateau fracture. WebMD describes the tibial plateau as the bone more commonly known as the shinbone, which is made up of cartilage.

Dallas drafted Siegrist third overall out of Villanova in 2023, and she has averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in 11 games this year. The Wings last month exercised her fourth-year rookie contract option for next season.

She won the Athletes Unlimited individual championship in March, outscoring Odyssey Sims in the four-week event in Nashville.

Dallas Wings down multiple players, adds two players to roster

The Wings are now down two guards due to injury, Siegrist and point guard Tyasha Harris, and are currently without two centers,  Teaira McCowan and Luisa Geiselsoder, who are both away because of national team obligations.

Guard/forward Kaila Charles, who had averaged 4.9 points and 3.5 rebounds in 11 games, was waived Saturday, June 14. But quickly signed to a hardship contract on Tuesday, June 17. 

But the team hopes to have some help down low and in the backcourt by acquiring Seattle Storm center Li Yueru, and former Atlanta Dream star Haley Jones. 

Yuera was sent to the Wings on Saturday, June 14, for two future draft picks.

Li, 26, averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds over 8.7 minutes in nine games with the Storm this season. She joined Seattle in the offseason following a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces.

Two weeks ago, iHeart Women’s Sports reported that Li’s representatives told the Storm she wanted to be traded. The team made good on that request by moving Li to Dallas, which needed a center after McCowan and Geiselsoder’s exits for international play. The Storm received a second-round pick in the 2026 WNBA draft and a third-round selection in 2027.

Jones, who most recently played for the Phoenix Mercury on a hardship contract, is available to play for the Wings immediately. The 6’1″ forward was selected No. 6 overall by the Dream in the 2023 WNBA Draft, playing in all 40 games that year. She also earned AP All-Rookie Team honors.

Both Jones and Charles qualified for hardship contracts after the Wings dropped below 10 available players following injuries and the temporary departures of McCowan and Geiselsoder.

With the new addition of Yuera and a lineup shakeup, Dallas is looking to break its 5-game home losing streak. The Wings have also gone 0-8 against Western Conference teams.

Dallas takes on the Golden State Valkyries for the first time this season on Tuesday, June 17.

Dallas currently ranks seventh in the WNBA with 19.3 assists per game. Arike Ogunbowale leads the Wings, averaging 4.3.

The Valkyries are 4-3 in Western Conference play. Golden State is sixth in the Western Conference with 18.1 assists per game, led by Veronica Burton, averaging 5.4.

Dallas is shooting 41.8% from the field this season, the same percentage Golden State allows to opponents.

There’s still a lot of golf to be played between now and September, including the highly anticipated Open Championship. However, no fan has stopped keeping an eye on the upcoming Ryder Cup, especially now that the teams are starting to take shape.

The American team recently announced that Scottie Scheffler is the first player confirmed for Bethpage Black. It didn’t take long for the Europeans to confirm Rory McIlroy as their first lock.

Another Ryder Cup veteran and fan favorite, Justin Rose, shared his excitement on his X account, which is followed by more than 913,000 users.

“Strong first player in team,” he posted.

After finishing in the top 20 in the U.S. Open, McIlroy reached 3,040.95 points in the internal European Ryder Cup team ranking, securing his spot on the roster as the first of the six direct qualifiers.

His three PGA Tour victories this season, including the Masters Tournament, naturally played a significant role in this result.

The Northern Irishman also reacted on X to his official inclusion in the team:

McIlroy has played in seven Ryder Cups, winning five. He has contributed 18 career points, and his best performance was in 2023 when he earned four points in five matches.

At the beginning of the current season, the five-time major winner stated that winning the Ryder Cup again on American soil is among his goals for the remainder of his professional career:

“Winning The Masters, winning an Olympic medal and another away Ryder Cup, they are my three goals for the rest of my career,” he said last January.

Only one of their five victories has come in the Americas. It was the famous 2012 edition, known as the “Miracle at Medinah,” in which the Europeans trailed by four points (10-6) heading into the singles matches, but won 8.5 points on the final day to turn the score around and take the title.
