Only two teams remain in the 2025 College World Series.

The field is down to No. 6 LSU and No. 13 Coastal Carolina, the latter of which enters the national championship on a 26-game win streak. It’s the second time Tigers coach Jay Johnson has faced the Chanticleers in the national championship, as he fell to Coastal Carolina in 2016 as the head coach at Arizona.

LSU snuck past Arkansas in the semifinals, coming back from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5 on a walk-off single from Jared Jones. Coastal Carolina, meanwhile, coasted to an 11-3 win over Louisville to reach the CWS finals.

5 Big Things to Remember About ‘Squid Game’ Season 2

0

Squid Game is about to reveal its endgame, with the third and final season of Netflix’s global smash arriving June 27. But before we see who ends up living, dying, walking away with the 45.6 billion won, or any of the other prospective fates we can imagine, it’s time to take a quick peek back at season two. Here’s the refresher you need before the new episodes arrive.

The Fight Became a Rebellion…

© No Ju-han/Netflix

Season two’s final episode, “Friend or Foe,” saw a massive fight that sparked in the men’s bathroom between player factions—the “X” voters, who wanted the game to end, versus the “O” voters, who wanted to keep playing—turn into a vicious after-hours brawl. The “O” voters, driven more by greed than the desire to survive, realized that if they killed off other players, the prize money would still increase; that element of the Squid Game wasn’t limited to who died during the actual competitions.

Amid the chaos, Gi-hun—Player 456, who returned after his victory in Squid Game season one aiming to dismantle the games forever—and his allies decided to hide under the bunks and avoid the player-on-player violence. They knew the pink-clad, gun-toting guards would eventually come in to break up the battle—and they seized the chaotic moment to overpower several of them and take their weapons.

…But the Rebellion Failed

The audience, of course, knew another season of Squid Game was coming, so the rebellion failing wasn’t a total surprise for viewers. For Gi-hun and his crew, however, it was devastating. Almost all of the “O” voters who helped Gi-hun escape the player area and attempt to break into the control room paid with their lives.

Gi-hun—still not aware that his new pal, Player 001, is actually the Front Man masquerading not just as a player, but as a loyal friend—thinks he overhears the man draw his last breath over a deceptive a walkie-talkie transmission. And Gi-hun has no idea that the extra ammo he gave 001 when they parted ways mid-battle is what the Front Man, back under his mask, uses to kill Gi-hun’s best friend, Player 390.

Who’s Still Alive in the Game?

222player
© No Ju-han/Netflix

Other than Gi-hun and the Front Man, aka Player 001, here are the key players who are still standing as part of a very diminished group:

Player 333, the failed crypto schemer. He killed Thanos, which we both love and hate him for.

Player 222, his very pregnant ex-girlfriend. The marketing for season three has featured a baby crying, which feels ominous.

Player 388, the former marine. His mental freakout during the rebellion came at a crucial moment—when he was racing back to collect more ammunition—and surely made a difference in who emerged victorious, and who got mowed down by tons of bullets.

Player 120, the ex-special forces soldier. She was a crucial part of the rebellion, helping everyone learn how to operate their newly acquired high-powered firearms. She didn’t want to back down, but Player 149 urged her to surrender.

Players 149 and 007, the mother and son team. He’s a gambler who entered the games trying to set things right; she’s become sort of a de facto mother figure for all the “X” voters.

Player 125, the timid guy. He saw his closest friend killed during the player-on-player fight, so he’ll have some scores to settle that may snap him out of his meek shell.

Player 124, Thanos’ bestie. We’ll miss the cocky rapper Thanos—a casualty of the bathroom battle—and so will 124, especially when he finishes going through all the drugs Thanos left behind.

Player 044, the self-proclaimed shaman. She was a big part of season two’s earlier episodes, but sort of faded from the spotlight after that. If you look closely, though, you can see her avoiding the player-on-player fight and the rebellion on one of the very tall top bunks.

What’s Going on With No-eul, the Rebellious Pink Guard?

The Masked Officer—the guy in charge when the Front Man is in player mode—knows No-eul from her North Korean soldier days. A talented sniper, she has a daughter back in North Korea, and took the Squid Game job seemingly out of desperation. But she’s not supportive of the organ-harvesting operation that secretly preys on the fallen players, to the point of sabotaging it. That further puts her on her boss’ radar.

No-eul doesn’t play a role in the “Friend or Foe” rebellion, but there’s still some bad blood to wade through in this behind-the-scenes storyline.

What about the Detective and His Search?

Jun Ho
© No Ju-han/Netflix

In season one, police detective Jun-ho went undercover as a Squid Game guard, hoping to find his missing brother. At the end of the season, Jun-ho realized his brother—who he knows as In-ho—is actually the Front Man himself, a gig In-ho ascended to after winning the games prior to Gi-hun’s victory.

Though Jun-ho keeps this bit of knowledge to himself, in season two he joins forces with Gi-hun to hopefully bring down the games. When Gi-hun gets whisked away to the seemingly untraceable island where the games are played, Jun-ho keeps searching with a crew that includes several gangsters—Gi-hun’s former foes, now on his payroll—as well as the seemingly sympathetic Captain Park, who lends his boat to the cause.

At the end of season two we learned that Captain Park is in fact working against this group—the Squid Game has deep pockets and a long reach!—but nobody still alive is aware that he’s on the bad guys’ side. They also don’t know he won’t hesitate to kill to protect that secret.

Squid Game season three arrives June 27 on Netflix.

Phillies-Mets game not on NBC Sports Philadelphia, streaming on Apple TV+

0

The red-hot Phillies have a chance to overtake the New York Mets this weekend in South Philly, but fans will need to dance around the channel guide to find the games on TV.

This weekend is a microcosm of sports television at the moment, with the slow death of cable TV forcing fans to navigate two different channels (though at least one is broadcast) and a subscription service to watch the games.

“Fandom isn’t being nurtured anymore. It’s being mined,” former ESPNer Joon Lee wrote recently in the New York Times, explaining how sports fans are forced to pay for a dizzying array of streaming services. With ESPN opting out of its deal, expect more MLB games to end up behind a paywall next season.

For now, if you want to avoid the hassle of clicking around, just tune in to listen on 94.1 WIP, where Scott Franzke and Kevin Stocker will call all three games. But if you want to see all the action, here’s everything you need to know to watch or stream this weekend’s Phillies games:

Tonight, you’ll need Apple TV+ to stream Phillies-Mets

First up is tonight’s game against the Mets, which will stream on Apple TV+ as part of its Friday Night Baseball doubleheader (Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres is the evening’s other game).

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Philly time, with ace Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.76 ERA) taking the mound for the Phillies.

Calling the game will be play-by-play announcer Wayne Randazzo and analyst Dontrelle Willis, the one-time Phillies pitcher. Heidi Watney will offer reports from Citizens Bank Park.

Apple does have a cool feature that allows you to listen to local broadcasts, so you can stream the game while hearing Franzke and Stocker on the call.

With no pre- or postgame show airing on NBC Sports Philadelphia, Apple has its own pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m. featuring Siera Santos, Xavier Scruggs, and Russell Dorsey.

If you’re not currently a subscriber to Apple TV+, the service runs $9.99 a month with a free seven-day trial (there’s a three-month trial for Apple Card users). You also might find the game airing at bars and restaurants around Philadelphia, thanks to Apple’s distribution deal with DirecTV. Just call ahead to make sure.

The Phillies have at least one more Apple TV+ game during the first half of the season — July 25 against the New York Yankees.

Saturday night’s Phillies-Mets game will air on Fox

Phillies-Mets move over to Fox Saturday night for Baseball Night in America, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Calling the game on Fox will be play-by-play announcer Adam Amin alongside analyst John Smoltz. Ken Rosenthal will report from Citizens Bank Park, and after calling Friday night’s game, Willis will be back for Fox’s pregame show Saturday alongside Chris Myers.

Taking the mound for the Phillies Saturday night will be Mick Abel (2-0, 2.21 ERA), making just his fifth start of the year with Aaron Nola on the 60-day injured list. Abel will face off against Mets righty Griffin Canning (6-3, 3.80 ERA).

Even if you don’t have a cable subscription, you can stream Fox for free with a digital antenna on Fox 29 if you live in or around Philadelphia.

Thanks to a heavy dose of New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers game, Fox is averaging 1.996 million viewers a night this season, up 6% from an average of 1.885 million viewers through its first 10 games last year, according to the network

Final game of Phillies-Mets series will air on ESPN’s ‘Sunday Night Baseball ‘

The Phillies will conclude their three-game series against the Mets on ESPN, which is in its final year airing Sunday Night Baseball.

ESPN decided to opt out of its TV rights deal with MLB following this season, ending the league’s 36-year run on the network.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has said he hopes to have a replacement for ESPN announced by the All-Star Game next month, though it’s possible the network’s package (which also include the Home Run Derby and wild card games) could be divided among multiple companies. NBC already bid for MLB rights, according to the Wall Street Journal, while Netflix is reportedly interested in adding games.

As for Sunday, Jon “Boog” Sciambi will handle play-by-play on ESPN due to Karl Ravech calling the College World Series finals. Joining Sciambi in the booth will be Sunday Night Baseball regulars David Cone and Eduardo Perez, with Buster Olney reporting from the stands.

Jesus Luzardo (6-3, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to take the mount for the Phillies looking to overcome a shaky start against the Cubs. He’s set to face lefty David Peterson (5-2, 2.60 ERA).

ESPN is leaving MLB on a high note. Sunday Night Baseball is averaging 1.75 million viewers per game, which the network says is its most-watched season since 2017. Overall, ratings are up 9% compared to last season.

CNN’s Fred Pleitgen Is First Western Journalist to Report From Tehran

0

Top of the Ticker: CNN journalists Fred Pleitgen and Claudia Otto were the first Western journalists to enter Iran since the conflict with Israel began last week. Pleitgen, who is CNN’s senior international correspondent, and Otto, the network’s photojournalist, visited the Iranian State Broadcasting Company (IRIB) television station, which was hit by an Israeli airstrike.

The crew toured parts of the building that took a direct hit, including the main part of the newsroom, where desks, computers, printers, and phones were left charred and melted.

“All of this is playing very big here in Iran,” Pleitgen said. “There’s a lot of public anger that the Israelis attacked this site.”

Pleitgen also filed a report from a protest in central Tehran held on Friday and had an interview with an Iranian Presidential Spokesman, who said President Donald Trump can end the conflict with one call to the Israelis.

Capitol Hill Acknowledgement: A bipartisan resolution was passed on Wednesday by the U.S. Senate, paying tribute to C-SPAN’s nearly 40 years of covering the Senate. Recognizing the value of unfiltered public access to Senate proceedings, the resolution was introduced on June 2 by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and co-sponsored by Senators Todd Young (R-IN) and Ron Wyden (D-OR). It commemorates the 39th anniversary of C-SPAN2’s first live broadcast from the U.S. Senate, applauds cable and satellite providers for carrying C-SPAN as a public service, and urges all television providers, including major streaming services, to make C-SPAN available to their subscribers.

Career recognition: CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Martha Teichner was celebrated at the 50th Annual Gracie Awards Luncheon in New York this past week. Teichner received the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her by colleague and friend Jane Pauley, who said, “How to describe such a woman in a word? The incomparable—Martha Teichner.” The awards ceremony was hosted by ABC News’ Juju Chang.

Kīlauea Episode 26 Erupts Lava Fountain Well Over 1,000 Feet

(BIVN) – Episode 26 in the ongoing eruption at the summit of Kīlauea volcano got underway overnight, and continued after sunrise on Friday.

Sustained lava fountains were reported to be “well over 1,000 feet (300 meters)” before 3 a.m., with a plume of over 20,000 feet (6,000 meters).

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory issued its first Volcanic Activity Notice just before midnight on Thursday evening, when low-level precursory activity started within Halemaʻumaʻu at 11:26 p.m. HST.

The second Volcanic Activity Notice was issued just a few hours later, announcing the sustained lava fountaining phase of Episode 26 had started at approximately 1:40 a.m. HST on Friday morning, with lava fountains and flows erupting from the north vent.

At the time of the start of the high fountaining, scientists reported winds blowing from the north direction, “which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and tephra from the lava fountain may be distributed south of Halema’uma’u caldera.”

No changes have been detected in the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.

The Kīlauea Volcano Alert Level/Aviation Color Code remain at WATCH/ORANGE. All activity is occurring within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Real Madrid Sign Teenage Playmaker Franco Mastantuono for $73M

0

Real Madrid have completed the signing of 17-year-old Argentina forward Franco Mastantuono from River Plate in a deal worth $73 million on a six-year contract. The teenager will join Madrid on August 14, 2025, his 18th birthday.

River Plate will receive €45 million from the transfer fee, with the remaining €18.2 million distributed between Spanish tax authorities, players’ associations, and the Argentine Football Association. The deal allows Mastantuono to compete in the Club World Cup with River before his Madrid move.

Mastantuono made his River Plate first-team debut in January 2024 at age 16. He scored his first professional goal the following month in a 3-0 victory against Excursionistas, becoming the club’s youngest goalscorer.

Rising Star’s Rapid Development

The young forward began his career at River de Azul, where his father coached, before joining River Plate’s academy in 2019. He has established himself as a regular starter this season, predominantly playing on the right side of River’s front three.

Mastantuono’s playing style centers around his technical ability and shooting prowess. He operates as a creative playmaker who drifts inside from wide positions, excelling in tight spaces between the lines.

His versatility allows him to function as both a goalscoring forward and traditional playmaker. The teenager’s ball-striking ability particularly stands out, demonstrated by his free-kick goal in River’s 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors in April.

“Hello friends, welcome to my channel,” Mastantuono said in his 2017 YouTube debut at age 10, originally aspiring to be a content creator before football took precedence.

The transfer represents one of the largest fees paid for a South American teenager, highlighting Madrid’s commitment to securing elite young talent for their future squad.

Flau’jae Johnson, Olivia Miles headline AmeriCup roster for U.S.

0

Potential 2026 WNBA draft lottery picks Flau’jae Johnson of LSU and Olivia Miles of TCU will play for USA Basketball in the upcoming FIBA Women’s AmeriCup competition in Santiago, Chile.

The 12-member squad, made up of top college players, was announced Thursday. It was picked by USA Basketball’s women’s junior national team committee.

Johnson, a senior guard, is one of five who will make their USA Basketball competitive debuts: Oklahoma senior center Raegan Beers, Iowa State junior center Audi Crooks, UCLA senior guard Gianna Kneepkens and Iowa senior forward Hannah Stuelke.

Miles, also a senior guard, and five others have won gold medals for USA Basketball in previous competitions: Texas junior guard Madison Booker, South Carolina sophomore forward Joyce Edwards, Notre Dame junior guard Hannah Hidalgo, USC sophomore guard Kennedy Smith and Michigan State senior forward Grace VanSlooten.

Vanderbilt sophomore guard Mikayla Blakes previously played for USA Basketball at the Nike Hoop Summit.

Johnson and Miles were eligible for the 2025 WNBA draft but returned to college for the 2025-2026 season. Miles transferred from Notre Dame to TCU after this past season. Kneepkens also transferred, going from Utah to UCLA.

Duke’s Kara Lawson, who won gold as a player in the 2008 Olympics and has extensive USA Basketball coaching experience, will be the head coach of the AmeriCup squad.

The competition runs from June 28 to July 6. The U.S. team opens Group B play vs. Chile, followed by Colombia, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and the controversial fashion of Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Love Story’

0

Editor’s Note: Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly, ‘Look of the Week’ is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfit of the last seven days.

CNN
 —

The “wrong” shade of blonde; a deflated, empty Birkin bag; and a camel coat so stiff it looks “like a brick,” according to one Substack writer. These are the main complaints of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy fans, who this week jumped to the defense of the late fashion publicist, whose memorable style many considered was being inaccurately portrayed in Ryan Murphy’s latest biopic.

On Saturday, Murphy, the TV producer and creator of “Glee,” and “Pose,” shared a first look at the upcoming drama, “American Love Story,” which chronicles the tumultuous relationship and untimely demise of Bessette-Kennedy and her husband John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Kelly).

A “fashion travesty” is what one user commented underneath the Instagram post teasing the images, noting that “Carolyn would never put these looks together. The fabrics are shoddy. Drape all wrong.” Indeed, in Murphy’s lighting test shots, the trusty, well-worn black Hermès Birkin bag that Bessette-Kennedy was often photographed carrying looked box-fresh, rigid and flat. Her camel coat appeared waxy and poorly tailored — something, commenters pointed out, went against everything the fashion titan stood for.

Others also pointed out that Pidgeon’s hair was incorrectly colored, washing her out and making her look ashy. Even Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s original hair colorist, Brad Johns, joined the conversation. “No one would believe that Carolyn in the ’90s would ever have that color from me. It’s too 2024,” he told Vogue. “When she sees that color, she’s going to be swirling in heaven.”

At first glance, the internet’s visceral reaction to a piece of streaming entertainment may appear outsized. But it also reveals a new, intense standard which biopic costume designers are expected to adhere to, and the depths of public emotions that remain for Bessette-Kennedy even 25 years after her death.

‘The wardrobe is a main character in this story’

Bessette-Kennedy’s journey from the Calvin Klein public relations department to becoming in-laws with then-US first lady Jackie Kennedy has captivated public interest for years. But her legacy extends far beyond the Kennedy surname, thanks to her strong visual identity and knack for sleek, casual dressing.

In 2017, Gabriela Hearst told Vanity Fair that Bessette-Kennedy had an “inner elegance” and was “not of this earth, in a way.” Sotheby’s, which auctioned off a series of Bessette-Kennedy’s personal pieces (which included clothing from Yohji Yamamoto and Prada) for a total of $177,600 in 2024, called her “the closest thing America ever had to their own Princess Diana.”

The fashion publicist's laid-back style has been lauded for more than two decades.
A tortoise shell headband and kick-flare jeans are among the key elements of Bessette-Kennedy's signature look.

As reverence for Bessette-Kennedy endures, it is perhaps unsurprising that any on-screen portrayal of the style icon would be subject to extreme scrutiny. Only two actors have dared take on the role before: Portia de Rossi in 2003 for the TV movie “America’s Prince: The John F. Kennedy Jr. Story,” and Erica Cox, who in 2017 briefly appeared in the four-episode mini-series “The Kennedys: After Camelot.”

Today, the stakes for Murphy’s project — perhaps the most mainstream example, set to premiere on Hulu in 2026 — seem higher, as interest in Bessette-Kennedy has not only maintained since 1999, but mounted further. From recent books dedicated to her enviable dress sense and the details of her marriage to JFK Jr. to the Instagram accounts with thousands of followers dissecting her aesthetic, Murphy’s new film has the potential to capitalize on a new wave of CBK adoration. However, the downside of more fans means more opinions.

In the age of biopics — more than 20 were released in 2023 alone, and another 10 in the works currently — a passing likeness to the public figure in question will not suffice. In 2018, Gary Oldman spent more than 200 hours in the hair and makeup chair, weathering heavy prosthetics that added over half his body weight to accurately portray Winston Churchill. Part of Lily James’s transformation when starring in the controversial “Pam and Tommy” 2022 Hulu series was a fake forehead and custom-made dentures.

In the fashion department, costumes are expected to be original items. Marisa Abela wore a cardigan and Pink Ladies varsity jacket that belonged to Amy Winehouse for the 2024 film on the late singer-songwriter. And when struggling to access Bob Dylan’s personal wardrobe for “A Complete Unknown” (a fictionalized account of the musician’s life), the film’s costume designer Arianne Phillips partnered with denim specialist Levi’s to recreate an exact bespoke pair of the same Super Slims silhouette that Dylan wore.

JFK Jr. and Bessette-Kennedy's relationship and untimely death have been the subject of increased public interest of late.

This high standard of character embodiment has given audiences a discerning eye, where even the slightest perceived inaccuracies are considered irredeemable. In the case of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, it feels particularly egregious because “the wardrobe is a main character in this story,” as one disgruntled stylist wrote under Murphy’s post. “This breaks my heart.”

Perhaps the pain also runs deep because fashion enthusiasts understand the importance of clothes as a medium to express one’s identity to the wider world — and the strife of making sure you feel like yourself every day. Not only did Bessette-Kennedy seem to have mastered that difficult task; she also embodied the minimalist style of the decade while simultaneously being ahead of her time. Little wonder she has remained a mood board fixture for designers and editors alike. To sully that legacy seems like sartorial sacrilege.

Live scores, recaps from Day 2 at Kaulig Companies Championship

0

Day 1 at Firestone Country Club was about surviving the elements.

The sun came out for Day 2 June 20 at the 2025 Kaulig Companies Championship. Some of the PGA Tour Champions’ best players took advantage.

New Zealand’s Steven Alker, Argentina’s Ricardo Gonzalez and Tim Petrovic of Austin, Texas, led the field at the end of two rounds, each shooting 5 under.

Thanks to a second straight hot start, Alker was in the lead most of the day. He shot four birdies in the first six holes before cooling off to score a 3-under 67.

“I just think, just good warmups and ready to go out and play,” Alker said of his hot starts. “It’s hard to keep a score going around here. You get 3 or 4 under and you don’t want to push too hard, but at the same time you’ve to be aggressive and you’ve got to stay at it.”

Petrovic tied for low round of the day at 4 under. He had the most eventful day on course with seven birdies and three bogeys in his round.

“It’s playing tough, the rough’s up,” Petrovic said. “With the rain we had, it’s playing really long. Yesterday was almost impossible to break par because the squall came through. Seven birdies today, I’m really pleased with that.”

Gonzalez stayed on the lead with a 2-under round of 68.

Just behind the tournament leaders lurked the Champions tour leader, Miguel Angel Jiménez, who also shot a 66 and was at 4 under for the tournament.

“Well, I feel good,” Jiménez said. “I make five birdies today. Overall, played very well. I feel very good for the weekend.”

Round 3 of the tournament will begin at 11:20 a.m. June 21.

Here were the live updates from Day 2 at Firestone Country Club:

All golfers have reached the clubhouse at Firestone Country Club.

Heading into Round 3, Tim Petrovic, Steven Alken and Ricardo Gonzalez will share the lead 5 under (135) for the tournament.

Following his lead in the first round, Argentina’s Ricardo Gonazalez remain on top through two rounds at Firestone Country Club.

Gonzalez finished with a 2-under round of 68, making him 5 under for the tournament and tying him with Steve Alker and Tim Petrovic for the lead.

Tim Petrovic had the wildest round of anyone in the tournament, shooting seven birdies and three bogeyes, but his roller coaster has landed in a tie for the lead.

Petrovic finishes with a 4-under 66 round, making him 5 under for the tournament and tying for the lead after round 2.

Champions Tour leader Miguel Angel Jiménez will be in contention again over the weekend.

Despite a bogey on the 17th hole, Jiménez came home 4 under for both the tournament and the day wit ha score of 66.

New Zealand’s Steve Alken has been in front most of Day 2. He enters the clubhouse with the lead.

Alken scored par on the ninth hole to complete a 3-under round of 67. He finished the second round at 5 under for the tournament and should be in the lead trio for round 3.

Hole 16, known as “The Monster,” proved no obstacle to the Miguel Angel Jiménez.
