British man charged in staged Disneyland Paris ‘marriage’ with nine-year-old girl


French prosecutors on Tuesday, June 24, charged a British citizen with offenses including money laundering and identity theft after he allegedly organized a bizarre ceremony at Disneyland Paris where he played the role of the groom in a fake marriage with a nine-year-old girl.

The man, who has not been named but has a criminal record in the UK for sexual assault offenses, has in addition to his charges also been named as an assisted witness – a step before being indicted – in a probe into suspected corruption of a minor, prosecutors said.

The incident initially caused grave alarm when staff alerted police that it could have concerned an illegal child marriage, with the purported “bride” a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl. It later turned out to have been entirely staged, but authorities immediately launched an investigation.

The British man played “the role of the groom after being professionally made up to display a face completely different from his own,” prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

French judicial authorities were informed by their British counterparts that the man “has been convicted in the past, notably for sexual offenses against minors,” he added on Tuesday. The man is currently wanted by British authorities for failing to comply with his obligations as a registered sex offender.

‘Significant irregularities’

The authorities have designated a 24-year-old Latvian who played the role of the bride’s sister at the event as an assisted witness. The prosecutor said investigations showed the “marriage” was in fact “a fictitious ceremony intended to be filmed privately.”

The Briton is suspected of “recruiting, with the help of a Latvian citizen, other Latvian nationals to ensure the smooth running of the event, as well as around 100 French extras, who were falsely presented to Disneyland Paris as wedding guests,” the prosecutor said.

The Ukrainian child, who arrived in France two days before the event, suffered “no violence, either physical or sexual” and “was not forced to play the role” of bride, the prosecutor had said at the weekend.

According to the prosecutor, Disneyland Paris was deceived, with “the organizer impersonating a Latvian national and using false documents to secure the contract to hire the park.”

The event was scheduled to take place between 5 am and 7 am local time, outside public opening hours, on the privatized premises “at a total cost of €130,000,” according to a police source who asked not to be named. But Disneyland Paris emphasized in a statement sent to AFP on Sunday that the event had been “immediately canceled” by its teams “after the identification of significant irregularities.”

A British man has been charged in connection with organising the “mock wedding” of a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl in Disneyland Paris.

French prosecutors said the 39-year-old man was a convicted sexual offender who is wanted in the UK. His name has not been made public.

He was arrested when police were called to the amusement park on Saturday morning at dawn by Disneyland Paris staff who were alerted by a “guest” who said he had been hired by the man to play the father of the bride.

The man said he had been paid €12,000 to play the role and that he only realised at the last minute that the “bride” was a child, according to a statement by Meaux prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier.

The statement also said the Ukrainian girl – who arrived in France two days earlier – had not been a victim of either physical or sexual violence and had not been “forced to play the role” of bride.

A woman who says she was hired to play the role of a guest told BFMTV that when she arrived at Disneyland Paris she saw a “little girl dressed in white with her hair all done up and I saw a woman who picked her up in her arms… and I was shocked, I burst into tears”.

“When I saw [it was a] child – it was horrific.”

Around 100 French extras had been recruited to take part in the fake ceremony, which was to be filmed in a private capacity.

The British man had reportedly hired Disneyland Paris for several hours for the stunt, in which he was to play the role of the groom.

Preliminary findings also stated he had allegedly been “made-up professionally so that his face appeared totally different from his own”, according to the prosecutor.

Three other people – including the 41-year-old mother of the girl, a 24-year-old Latvian woman who was to play the bride’s sister and a 55-year-old Latvian man – were also arrested.

By Tuesday only the British man was still being held by police.

The British man and the Latvian woman appeared in front of a judge in Meaux on 23 June and the man was charged with fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and identity theft and placed in pretrial detention.

The Latvian remains a witness in the investigation.

The prosecutor’s statement also said that Disneyland Paris had been “deceived” and that the organiser had used a fake Latvian ID to hire the venue. Disneyland Paris can be rented by members of the public outside opening hours.

BFMTV reported that the “mock wedding” may have cost organiser more than €130,000 (£110,000).

Mr Bladier’s statement said that the British man “was reportedly convicted in the past, including for offences of a sexual nature against minors.

“He is, as such, listed in the British database of sexual offenders and is currently wanted nationally by the judicial authorities of his country of origin due to a breach of the requirements deriving from said order.”

It is unclear, at this stage, what the point of the “stunt” was.

The investigation continues.

Some people are just not prepared to handle the power of the mullet. 

While visiting Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, Charlize Theron revealed that her two daughters — 11-year-old Jackson and 7-year-old August — had a physical reaction to discovering that their mom had cut her hair into a mullet as part of her role in The Old Guard 2. 

“I have two girls and they’re very… they’re mostly very girly,” Theron explained to host Seth Meyers. “They think of me as a princess and they want mom to, like, look like a princess.”

However, the 49-year-old actress noted that her own personal style tends to skew more toward edgy and masculine looks, much to the displeasure of her kids. She added, “When I go to school functions, my daughter’s always like, ‘Mom, can you please wear a dress?’”

Theron explained that she was already mid-cutting her mullet for the film when her daughters returned home from school. 

“I just remember looking over and they both came into the room really excited, and then they just both froze and they just went…” she said, her mouth dropping open in shock. “And one started crying. One literally started bawling her eyes out.”

The haircut actually ended up being an important teachable moment for her and her kids. “I had to actually sit down with her and say like, ‘We all get to be who we want to be,’” Theron remarked. “‘And right now Mommy wants to wear a mullet. I don’t tell you what to do with your hair.’” 

Her daughter, however, still wasn’t pleased with her mom’s new look. According to Theron, she simply replied, “‘I still don’t like it.’”

Meyers could understand where Theron’s kids were coming from. 

“I will say my dad — who still to this day has a mustache, and had a mustache the entirety of my life — one spring break when we were probably about the age your kids are now, he came out of the bathroom and he’d shaved his mustache as like, ‘Hey I want to look young!’” he recalled. “And my brother and I both screamed because we literally thought it was an intruder. I mean, that’s how different he looked. So at least you still look like you with the mullet!”

And, to be fair, Theron confessed that the mullet was “a big shock” for all involved, including herself. 

“It took me a while to get,” she admitted. “It’s also one of those hairstyles you have to get it right because, anything else, you can kind of mess up a little bit. But a mullet you cannot mess up because already everyone’s like, ‘It’s a mullet.’”

Theron isn’t the only actor whose kids have had an adverse reaction to one of their movie transformations. Josh Hartnett revealed on Today last month that his kids similarly burst into tears upon seeing the fresh blonde dye job he got for his action film, Fight or Flight. 

“They cry every time I change my look,” he said of his children. “And, being an actor, I have to do that quite a bit.”

A British sex offender accused of staging a mock wedding with a child at Disneyland Paris has been charged with money-laundering and fraud offences in France.

Jacky Jhaj, 39, who in 2016 was found guilty of sexual activity with two 15-year-olds, was arrested this weekend at Disneyland Paris after the theme park was hired for a private wedding. Staff are said to have called police when they saw that the “bride” in a wedding dress was a nine-year-old girl.

Jhaj, who prosecutors said was playing the role of the groom in the mock wedding, has been charged by an investigative judge in Meaux with offences including money laundering and identity theft. The nine-year-old girl, who is Ukrainian, was not harmed, police said.

Jhaj was identified as the arrested man by the BBC, which has previously published investigations into him. French police and prosecutors have not named him, though prosecutors said the charged man had a criminal record in the UK for sexual assault offences.

Jhaj is accused of organising a bizarre mock marriage ceremony that included an orchestra, a giant cake and a backdrop of a Disney castle. He had organised for more than 100 paid extras to be bussed from Paris. They believed they were playing the role of guests in a real wedding scenario.

The French court also opened an investigation into the suspected corruption of a minor, designating the man as an “assisted witness” – a step before being indicted.

Disneyland Paris is Europe’s most-visited theme park and can be hired for weddings outside opening hours at a very high price, with its Sleeping Beauty castle as a backdrop. The event had been scheduled to take place between 5am and 7am on Saturday for a price of about €130,000 (£111,000).

The French state prosecutor in Meaux, Jean-Baptiste Bladier, said the British man played “the role of the groom after being professionally made up to display a face completely different from his own”.

Bladier said French judicial authorities were informed by British police that the man “has been convicted in the past, notably for sexual offences against minors”.

The Metropolitan police in London said a 39-year-old man was wanted for breaching a sexual harm prevention order and a breach of a sex offender register notification requirement. In a statement, the force said: “We are aware the man has been arrested in France for other matters and officers are in contact with the French authorities.”

PA Media reported that the man was placed under supervision after being convicted of sexual activity with two 15-year-old girls in 2016.

The French prosecutor said investigations had showed that the Disneyland “marriage” was in fact “a fictitious ceremony intended to be filmed privately”.

Oilers trade Evander Kane to Canucks for fourth-round pick

The Edmonton Oilers have traded left wing Evander Kane to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2025 fourth-round pick, the teams announced Tuesday.

Kane’s agent Dan Milstein said three teams were interested in the veteran, but Kane is going back home to Vancouver, which was his preference. With the move, Vancouver is picking up the full $5.125 million cap hit for the final year of the Kane’s contract, a league source said.

“Evander is a physical power forward who will add some much-needed size and toughness to our group,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. “We like the way he wins puck battles along the boards and handles himself in the dirty areas in front of the net. Evander moves well around the ice and has proven to be a productive goal scorer in the National Hockey League. We are excited to bring him back home to Vancouver and our staff looks forward to working with him this coming season.”

Kane announced the trade on X.

“To the fans — thank you for embracing me and showing unwavering support throughout my time in Edmonton,” he wrote. “Rogers Place was always electric, and I’m proud to have played in front of such a passionate hockey city. My family and I have built some incredible relationships that will last forever.”

The 33-year-old last played in his hometown as a teenager in the Western Hockey League.

“It’s an honor to become part of an organization and team I grew up watching as a kid,” he wrote on X. “Vancouver is a city that lives and breathes hockey, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of my hometown as I did many years ago as a Vancouver Giant.”

Kane missed the entire 2024-25 regular season with an injury, but returned for the postseason and led the team in goals per 60 (1.12) at five-on-five.

Why the Canucks made the trade

The Canucks view Kane as a buy-low power forward with a unique profile. If they’re aware of the risks involved, given Kane’s lengthy history of drama and controversy, and given the internal cultural issues that waylaid this team last season, they’re certainly not worried about them.

Vancouver views their risks on the Kane file as being largely managed by the low cost of acquisition, and the expiring nature of Kane’s commitment. This is, to the organization, a unique opportunity to buy the sort of big, heavy player they needed at the top-end of their lineup, a power forward with real presence.

We’ll see how it works out, but it’s certainly an interesting move for a club that seemed to desperately need something of a cultural reset following a drama-filled, uninspired 2024-25 campaign.

Acquiring Kane for a fourth-round pick leaves Vancouver with about $7 million in remaining salary cap space. That’s space the club will look to utilize aggressively in acquiring a top-six calibre centre, ideally a younger veteran player, on the trade market between now and the NHL Entry Draft.

The club is prepared to select 15th overall on Friday if it comes to that, but their strong preference is to deal that pick for win now help. They’ll likely have to include a salary in a prospective trade now too, and are willing to deal a veteran player on a mid-range salary if the right player comes available. We’ll be keeping our eyes on Dakota Joshua and Teddy Blueger, in the event that the right opportunity to continue to upgrade their top-six forward group comes into focus. — Thomas Drance, Canucks senior writer

What this means for the Oilers

The Oilers lose one of the sport’s true power forwards by moving Kane. His unique blend of scoring prowess and physicality can be matched by only a few NHL peers when he’s healthy and motivated. He displayed that for large stretches in the playoffs as he recorded six goals and 12 points in 21 games.

His departure leaves a significant void in the lineup. It’s still a net benefit for the Oilers because they rid themselves of a major headache and gain $5.125 million in cap space.

Kane choosing to wait until after training camp started in September to have his abdominal/core surgeries put the Oilers in a real bind when it came to roster and salary-cap planning. He then caught the team by surprise by having a knee scope in January.

That issue changed the whole outlook on a possible return before the playoffs. Oilers brass always thought he’d play games in the regular season until then. That belief factored in, at least in part, to their decision not to match the qualifying offers the St. Louis Blues extended to winger Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.

The uncertainty continued right up until the trade deadline. They only got clarity that Kane would miss the entire regular season in time to use the available cap space to acquire defenseman Jake Walman.

Kane was an effective contributor in the postseason right up until the Stanley Cup Final shifted to Florida for Game 3. A flurry of penalties eventually got him benched and then demoted to the fourth line. He only got time in the top six later in the series out of necessity. His last moment as an Oiler was him exiting the ice after being issued a 10-minute misconduct for slashing Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk.

Clearing Kane’s $5.125 million cap hit gives the Oilers more than $16 million in space, per PuckPedia. That’ll come in handy in their attempts to shop for a goaltender, re-sign pending RFA defenseman Evan Bouchard and UFA forward Trent Frederic and fill out the rest of their roster. — Daniel Nugent-Bowman, Oilers beat writer

After going months between commitments, the Kansas Jayhawks have landed two impact players in as many days.

According to 247 Sports sources, Congolese big man Paul Mbiya committed to Bill Self and KU on Wednesday.

A 6-foot-10 big man who boasts an otherworldly 7-foot-7 wingspan, Mbiya asked out of his NLI from NC State after being committed to them for over a month.

Once he hit the open market again last week, On3 analyst Joe Tipton named Kansas and Oregon as the top competitors in the race to land Mbiya, and the Jayhawks came out on top.

Kansas conducted a Zoom call with Mbiya on Monday, and the coaching staff clearly sold him.

Mbiya sharpened his skills at the prestigious NBA Academy Africa and broke out with the club ASVEL Villeurbanne in France.

He averaged 15.5 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals in 32.5 minutes per game over 23 contests this past season.

That level of production is especially impressive given that he has only been playing basketball for three years.

With Mbiya’s and Kohl Rosario’s commitment, KU has filled 13 of its 14 available scholarships, leaving one more spot open.

It also likely takes Kansas out of the running for other bigs like Ege Demir and Brice Dessert since they now have a backup for Flory Bidunga in place.

In just a matter of days, Self and his staff have managed to turn what was looking like a troubling offseason into one of his most productive late recruiting surges in recent memory.

Edmonton Oilers’ Evander Kane announces on X that he’s been traded to Vancouver Canucks


Evander Kane has been traded from from the Edmonton Oilers to the Vancouver Canucks for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft. 

Kane first announced the trade on X. His agent, Dan Milstein, told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that three teams were interested, with the Canucks winning out, which was where Kane wanted to go. 

“As my time with the @EdmontonOilers has now come to a close, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank the entire organization, my teammates, and the incredible community of Edmonton,” Kane wrote. “To the Oilers Ownership, front office, coaching staff, and trainers—thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a respected and passionate franchise. Your support meant everything, and I’ll always be grateful for the chance to compete in the blue and orange. To my teammates—thank you for the battles, the friendships, and the memories.

“I’ll always remember the playoff runs, the highs and lows, and the pride of going to war with a special group of guys. To the fans—thank you for embracing me and showing unwavering support throughout my time in Edmonton. Rogers Place was always electric, and I’m proud to have played in front of such a passionate hockey city. My family and I have built some incredible relationships that will last forever.

“With that said, I’m incredibly excited for the next chapter of my career as I join the @Canucks . It’s an honor to become part of an organization and team I grew up watching as a kid. Vancouver is a city that lives and breathes hockey, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of my hometown as I did many years ago as a Vancouver Giant. Kane, 33, missed the entire regular season while recovering from abdominal and knee surgeries. He recorded six goals and 12 points in 21 playoff games before his team was eliminated in the Stanley Cup Final.  The 6-foot-2 winger had 24 goals and 44 points in 77 games in 2023-24 and added four goals and eight points in the Oilers’ run to the Stanley Cup Final. 

No salary was retained in the deal, meaning moving Kane clears $5.13 million in cap space for the Oilers, who need to re-sign restricted free agent Evan Bouchard this summer.

The team had $11.96 million in space before the trade, per PuckPedia, with 19 players under contract for next season. Forwards Corey Perry, Connor Brown, Trent Frederic, Kasperi Kapanen and Jeff Skinner are all slated for unrestricted free agency, while defenceman John Klingberg is also set to hit the open market after signing with Edmonton in January. 

LeBrun reports the Oilers will also look to trade Viktor Arvidsson this summer and clear an additional $4 million from their books. 

Canucks roster near complete?

Adding Kane, who  is entering the final season of a four-year, $20.5 million contract, leaves the Canucks with just over $7 million in cap space with 22 players under contract for next season, per PuckPedia.

Forwards Brock Boeser and Pius Suter remain scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency, along with defenceman Noah Juulsen. 

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a team release that Kane fills a void on the team’s roster.

“Evander is a physical power forward who will add some much-needed size and toughness to our group,” said Allvin. “We like the way he wins puck battles along the boards and handles himself in the dirty areas in front of the net. Evander moves well around the ice and has proven to be a productive goal scorer in the National Hockey League.

“We are excited to bring him back home to Vancouver and our staff looks forward to working with him this coming season.”

Drafted fourth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, Kane has 326 goals and 617 points in 930 career games split between the Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, and Oilers. 

The Vancouver native represented Canada three times at the World Championship, finishing as high as fifth place in 2011 and 2012.

Evacuation Warning Lifted For Diablo Residents


DIABLO, CA — An evacuation warning for residents of Diablo has been lifted, according to the Contra Costa Community Warning System.

Residents living between Blackhawk Road and Green Valley Trail in Diablo were under an Evacuation Warning Level 2 Tuesday afternoon due to a 5-acre wildfire. See here for a map of the affected area.

An All Clear was given at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday
