Watch: Hideki Matsuyama has horrific luck at Masters

0

Hideki Matsuyama will have some ground to make up after the opening round of the Masters, and he can thank one of the flagsticks at Augusta National Golf Club for that.

Matsuyama was playing fairly well in the first round of the Masters on Thursday when he caught a horrendous break. After laying up to a nice spot on the par-5 13th hole, Matsuyama hit what looked like a perfect approach shot. It just happened to a bit too perfect.

Matsuyama’s shot bounced off the flag stick and rolled into the water.

Hideki Matsuyama gets bad bounce off flagstick at Augusta National

0

Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, got one of those bounces that would leave any golfer shaking their head during Thursday’s first round at Augusta National.

Playing the par-5 13th, Matsuyama was 1 under for the day after having missed a short putt on No. 12 that led to a bogey at the 2025 Masters. He had laid up short of the tributary to Rae’s Creek.

The Japanese star played what looked like a great shot onto the green from 67 yards, but after one bounce, the ball slammed into the flagstick and reversed all the way into the water hazard.

Matsuyama took a penalty and a drop, then knocked his fifth shot onto the green past the hole, spinning back but still some 15 feet from the hole. He two-putted for a double bogey after having been within reach of a birdie. The 7 dropped him to 1 over for the round.

Who is Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man ICE mistakenly deported?

0

Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s story begins in his native El Salvador, but it’s become increasingly unclear where it will end.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to facilitate his return to the U.S. from a notorious prison, rejecting the White House’s claim that it couldn’t retrieve the Salvadoran national after mistakenly deporting him.

Trump administration officials on Monday pushed back against the idea of bringing him back, arguing it was up to El Salvador. The president of El Salvador said he lacked the power to return him, saying it would be “preposterous” to “smuggle a terrorist into the United States.”

Abrego Garcia, 29, lived in the U.S. for roughly 14 years, during which he worked construction, got married and was raising three children with disabilities, according to court records.

Trump administration officials said he was deported last month based on a 2019 accusation from local police in Maryland that he was an MS-13 gang member. Abrego Garcia denied the allegation and was never charged with a crime, his attorneys said.

Later in 2019, a U.S. immigration judge shielded Abrego Garcia from deportation to El Salvador because he likely faced persecution there by local gangs that had terrorized his family. The Trump administration deported him there anyway, later describing the mistake as “an administrative error” but insisting he was in MS-13.

As his case continues in the U.S. courts, here is Abrego Garcia’s story so far:

Gang threats in El Salvador

Abrego Garcia grew up in El Salvador’s capital city, San Salvador, according to court documents filed in U.S. immigration court in 2019. His father was a former police officer. His mother, Cecilia, sold pupusas, the nation’s signature dish of flat tortilla pouches that hold steaming blends of cheese, beans or savory pork.

The entire family, including his parents, two sisters and older brother, ran the business from home, court records state. Abrego Garcia’s job was to buy ingredients from the grocery store and make deliveries with his brother.

“Everyone in the town knew to get their pupusas from ‘Pupuseria Cecilia,’” his lawyers wrote.

A local gang, Barrio 18, began extorting the family for “rent money” and threatened to kill his older brother Cesar — or force him into their gang — if they weren’t paid, court documents state. The family complied but eventually sent Cesar to the U.S.

Barrio 18 similarly targeted Abrego Garcia, according to his immigration case. When he was 12, the gang threatened to take him away until his father paid them “all of the money that they wanted.” They still watched him as he walked to and from school.

The family moved 10 minutes away, but the gang threatened to rape and kill Abrego Garcia’s sisters, court records state. The family shut down the business, moved again and eventually sent Abrego Garcia to the U.S.

The family never went to authorities because of rampant police corruption, according to court filings. The gang continued to harass the family after they moved to Guatemala, which borders El Salvador.

Life in the U.S.

Abrego Garcia fled to the U.S. illegally around 2011, the year he turned 16, according to documents filed in his immigration case. He joined Cesar, now a U.S. citizen, in Maryland and found work in construction.

About five years later, Abrego Garcia met Jennifer Vasquez Sura, a U.S. citizen, the records say. In 2018, after she learned she was pregnant, he moved in with her and her two children. They lived in Prince George’s County, just outside Washington.

In 2019, Abrego Garcia went to a Home Depot looking for work when he was arrested by county police, according to court filings. Detectives asked if he was a gang member. After explaining he wasn’t, he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Abrego Garcia later told an immigration judge that he would seek asylum and asked to be released. Vasquez Sura was five months into a high-risk pregnancy.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, however, alleged that he was a certified gang member based on information that came from a confidential informant used by county police, records state.

According to Abrego Garcia’s attorneys in his current case, the criminal informant had alleged that Abrego Garcia belonged to an MS-13 chapter in New York, where he has never lived.

The information was enough for an immigration judge in 2019 to keep Abrego Garcia in jail as his immigration case continued, court records state. The judge said the informant was proven and reliable and had verified his gang membership and rank.

Abrego Garcia later married Vasquez Sura in a Maryland detention center, according to court filings. She gave birth while he was still in jail.

In October 2019, an immigration judge denied Abrego Garcia’s asylum request but granted him protection from being deported back to El Salvador because of a “well-founded fear” of gang persecution, according to his case. He was released, and ICE did not appeal.

Abrego Garcia checked in with ICE yearly while the Department of Homeland Security issued him a work permit, his attorneys said in court filings. He joined a union and was employed full time as a sheet metal apprentice.

He and Vasquez Sura were raising three kids, including their 5-year-old son, who has autism, is deaf in one ear and unable to verbally communicate, according to the complaint filed against the Trump administration. They’re also raising a 9-year-old with autism and a 10-year-old with epilepsy.

Mistaken deportation

In February, the Trump administration designated MS-13 as a foreign terrorist organization and sought to remove identified members “as expeditiously as possible,” U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer wrote in Monday’s brief to the Supreme Court.

Abrego Garcia was pulled over March 12 outside an Ikea in Baltimore with his son, according to court records. An agent called Vasquez Sura and said she had 10 minutes to retrieve their son or ICE would request child protective services.

Abrego Garcia called his wife from jail and said authorities pressed him about MS-13, according to court documents. They asked about a photo they had of him playing basketball on a public court, and his family’s visits to a restaurant serving Mexican and Salvadoran food.

“He would repeat the truth again and again — that he was not in a gang,” Vasquez Sura stated in court documents.

“This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom,” according to the season synopsis.

play

“The Handmaid’s Tale” returned earlier this week for its sixth and final season and the first three episodes had a lot to unpack.

After escaping Gilead, June (Elisabeth Moss) finally finds peace in Alaska where she is reunited with her mother Holly (Cherry Jones). However, her peace is short-lived, and she returns to No Man’s Land to successfully help husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle), and best friend Moira (Samira Wiley) escape a Mayday mission gone bad. On the other hand, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) is attempting to build New Bethlehem, Gilead’s new, reformed community where refugees are welcomed back.

According to Hulu, June will fight to take down Gilead with Luke and Moira joining the resistance in the final season of Emmy-winning drama series. Serena, meanwhile, “tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) reckon with what they have wrought, and Nick (Max Minghella) faces challenging tests of character.”

“This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom,” the season’s synopsis says.

Adapted from Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, “The Handmaid’s Tale” tells “the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States,” according to the series synopsis.

June/Offred, one of the few fertile women in the oppressive Republic of Gilead, known as Handmaids, “struggles to survive as a reproductive surrogate for a powerful Commander and his resentful wife” in society.

Wendy’s Is Releasing 6 All-New Frostys—Including Collabs with Oreo and Pop-Tarts

0

Wendy’s Frosty will forever remain one of the most loved items at the fast food chain. There’s a reason why the Dave Thomas-created treat—which is somewhere between a milkshake and soft-serve ice cream—has withstood the test of time since its induction as a core menu item at the first Wendy’s restaurant.

In fact, the Frosty is so loved that when Wendy’s started adding seasonal flavors to the menu like Strawberry, Pumpkin Spice, and Salted Caramel, fans complained that they could no longer order their favorite Vanilla Frosty. That’s the biggest problem with the Frosty: there can only be two flavors on the menu at the time. Or, at least that’s how it used to be.

In February, Wendy’s introduced a Thin Mints Frosty in collaboration with the Girl Scouts. The Frosty featured a unique Thin Mints-inspired cookie butter swirl—and, for the first time ever, customers could choose if they wanted the swirl in the Chocolate or Vanilla Frosty, which meant there were four Frosty options on the menu at one time.

After proving the classic Frosty is even more delicious with a simple swirl of Thin Mints cookie butter or Pineapple Mango purée (in the Spongebob-inspired Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty), Wendy’s has decided to add a new kind of Frosty to menus.

Wendy’s Announces New Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions

Wendy’s

At Wendy’s Investor Day in early March, the chain confirmed its plans to introduce new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions to menus this spring.

“Frosty is one of the most iconic items on Wendy’s menu and we know that consumers are increasingly seeking new flavors and variety,” said Lindsay Radkoski, The Wendy’s Company’s U.S. Chief Marketing Officer. “Our new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions will give our fans even more ways to enjoy this classic treat.”

Much like the Thin Mints Frosty, the new Frosty Swirls will allow you to add a sauce to your Chocolate or Vanilla Frosty. The Frosty Fusions will feature those same sauces, plus additional mix-ins to make for an even more delicious experience.

Wendy’s has finally shared more information on the six new Frostys, and when they’ll be hitting menus. The Frosty Swirls will soft launch on the Wendy’s app on April 11, with full availability at all restaurants nationwide beginning April 15. Then, the Frosty Fusions will join the menu on May 12.

The Frosty Swirls will be available in Strawberry, Caramel, and Brownie Batter flavors, which can be added to the Chocolate or Vanilla Frosty.

Then, later this spring, the Frosty Fusions will include a Caramel Crunch flavor, and two collaborations with Pop-Tarts and Oreo for a Pop-Tarts Strawberry Frosty Fusion and an Oreo Brownie Batter Frosty Fusion. The Frosty Fusions will feature the same Frosty Swirls sauces, but with the addition of crunchy mix-ins, like strawberry-flavored Pop-Tarts Crunchy Poppers, classic Oreo cookies, and toffee pieces.

At Investor Day, Radkoski also mentioned that the new add-ins aren’t the only thing changing for the dessert. Wendy’s will now have new Frosty cups, lids, and custom blue spoons “designed for the perfect eating experience.”

“This spoon allows customers to get every bit of Frosty goodness out of the bottom of the cup,” she explained.

In addition to the new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions, Wendy’s also announced that it has plans to collaborate with Takis, the spicy rolled tortilla chip, later this summer.

Don’t mind us as we clear our calendars on April 11 and May 12 to try out all the new Wendy’s menu items.

Michael Phelps remains an Orioles fans, and his kids are too

0

PHOENIX — Brandon Hyde was partway through an answer during his pregame media session in the dugout at Chase Field when he stopped, losing his train of thought. Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, had just walked up those dugout steps and onto the field with his family.

“I’m in awe right now,” the Orioles’ manager said, laughing. “Greatest of all time showed up. Big O’s fan.”

That he is. Phelps wore an Orioles polo shirt and hat. His children sported Baltimore gear. The swimmer, who lives in Arizona but was raised in Baltimore, said the Diamondbacks are his and his family’s second-favorite team. But the Orioles are and will always be No. 1.

“I have a couple friends that play for them [the Diamondbacks] and a couple of guys in the front office here, and they knew I would be [wearing] this,” Phelps said, motioning to his Orioles gear. “They’d hear me saying ‘O!’ during the national anthem. I’m born and raised in Baltimore.”

The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.

Phelps has fond memories of going to Orioles games as a kid with his dad, who was a state trooper and worked security at Camden Yards. Phelps had the chance to go into the clubhouse, meeting Cal Ripken Jr., Brady Anderson, Ben McDonald and others.

That created lifelong memories for Phelps. He played baseball, soccer and lacrosse and — obviously — swam growing up. He focused on swimming as he got older, and the 39-year-old became an American hero with 28 Olympic medals.

He’s excited his four sons are interested in sports, but Phelps is allowing them to find what they love. Phelps is the third-base coach for their baseball team. (“I will be sending kids home nonstop,” Phelps said. “I don’t have a stop button.”) He coached their flag football and soccer teams.

“For me,” he said, “being a dad, watching them compete, there’s absolutely nothing better.”

Phelps watched as his sons, Boomer, Beckett, Maverick and Nico, received autographs on baseballs from Gunnar Henderson and Ryan Mountcastle. Phelps said their household has sports on every night, and the Orioles are a fixture.

The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“We are all into sports,” Phelps said. “And, for me, I want them to find a passion. If it’s baseball, awesome. If it’s soccer, whatever it is, I’m going to try to nourish it and help them be the best athlete they can be.”

One of his kids told Henderson he predicted the shortstop would hit a home run during Wednesday’s game. He received a fist bump for the support. Phelps threw his long-ball prediction to Ryan O’Hearn, but he’s mostly glad to see Henderson healthy again.

The Phelps family also went to Denver last year to support the Orioles. Phelps’ wife, Nicole Johnson, is from Colorado. During the postseason, Phelps comes back to Baltimore to watch.

Phelps knows how meaningful joining his dad at Camden Yards was growing up. It kicked off a lifetime of passion for the Orioles. Now he gets to watch his kids have the same wide-eyed look he had when they see this generation of stars, such as Henderson and Adley Rutschman.

“It’s kind of that full-circle moment, and it’s really special to see their excitement when they see the guys they root for every day on TV,” Phelps said. “Those are moments I remember as a kid and stick with you forever.”
