CSK sign 17-year-old youngster as replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad; Prithvi Shaw’s IPL exile continues

0

The struggling Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have finally zeroed in on a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. The five-time champions’ skipper was ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edition due to a hairline fracture on his elbow. Since Gaikwad’s injury update, there has been a lot of buzz regarding the franchise potentially calling up Prithvi Shaw as a replacement. For the uninitiated, Prithvi Shaw went unsold in the IPL mega auction, and the injury to Gaikwad led to rumour mills working overtime.

Chennai Super Kings’ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 edition due to a hairline fracture on his elbow(PTI)

However, the franchise, which is currently languishing at the bottom of the points table, has narrowed in on a 17-year-old youngster as Ruturaj Gaikwad’s replacement.

CSK have decided to bring Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre as the replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. Sources privy to developments confirmed to Hindustan Times that the youngster would join the CSK squad for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.

There is not enough time for Ayush Mhatre to travel to Lucknow for CSK’s next match against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025. However, he will be available for selection for the franchise’s marquee fixture against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20, 2025.

“Yes, Ayush Mhatre has been identified as the replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. He has been asked to link up with the squad. He will be available for selection for the April 20 fixture against Mumbai Indians,” the source confirmed.

Earlier, the CSK management had asked Mhatre to travel to Chennai for trials. He impressed the support staff then, and hence, he was confirmed as the replacement.

For the uninitiated, the youngster is highly regarded within the Mumbai cricket circles. He has scored 504 runs in 9 first-class matches, including two half-centuries and one fifty.

He has scored 458 runs in seven List-A matches, including two centuries. He made his debut in first-class cricket in October 2024.

MS Dhoni leading CSK

When Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the IPL 2025 season, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that “uncapped player” MS Dhoni would lead the side in the remainder of the tournament. However, Dhoni’s return to captaincy did not get off to an ideal start, as CSK was hammered by eight wickets by defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

CSK managed just 103/9 in the allotted twenty overs, and this target was chased down by KKR, who had eight wickets in hand. One of the most successful IPL franchises has been lacklustre this season, and the batting department has failed to live up to the task.

Rahul Tripathi, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Shivam Dube have failed to impress with the bat, which is the main reason behind CSK’s struggles.

Ahead of the match against Lucknow Super Giants, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming addressed the batting failures, saying, “I know there’s a fascination with power and six hitting, but there’s also a couple of teams doing well with good craft, and I’d be very sad if the day came to us just being in a baseball competition and talking about sixes and fours.”

“The beauty of the game is that there’s still balance between bat and ball. Conditions play a big part, but there’s still room for craft, and you’re still seeing top-class players playing pivotal innings when it’s not flat like a road, and I just hope the balance can remain,” he told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

2025 NBA Draft order: Odds for No. 1 pick, lottery date as Cooper Flagg officially declares for draft

0

The bulk of the 2024-25 NBA Draft order was determined on the final day of the NBA regular season. At that point, most of the teams that missed the playoffs were locked into their lottery slots while most of the teams that made it were locked into their actual draft positions. With eight teams still in the Play-In Tournament and a few more in the playoffs with inferior records to teams still fighting for their spots, though, there were a handful of things left to figure out. With Friday’s action now in the books, we have most of the 2025 draft order settled.

We knew last week that the three teams sharing the best odds for the No. 1 pick and the right to draft Cooper Flagg — who officially declared for the draft on Monday — were the Jazz, Wizards and Hornets, but now, the end of the lottery is mostly in place as well.

Still to be determined are the tiebreakers. When two teams in the lottery are tied, they split the lottery odds of the two slots in half and share them. A random drawing then determines who gets the higher overall slot, which is where the teams are ordered after the top four are determined. When two playoff teams are tied, however, the league just holds a random drawing to determine who gets the better pick.

Duke star Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 overall pick, declares for 2025 NBA Draft: What makes him so good?

Cameron Salerno

So what did we learn in the Play-In Tournament? The Bulls and Mavericks will split the lottery odds at No. 11 and No. 12, with a random drawing determining who winds up in each position. The same thing will occur at No. 13 and No. 14, but with a slight twist. Atlanta’s original pick belongs to San Antonio thanks to the Dejounte Murray trade. However, Atlanta gets Sacramento’s pick if it lands at No. 13 or later. A random drawing will figure out, in all likelihood, if that pick is No. 13 or No. 14. If it jumps into the top four, though, the Kings keep it.

Outside of the lottery, the Heat come in at No. 15 after making the playoffs. That sends their pick to Oklahoma City, as it was lottery-protected. Finally, Memphis making the playoffs sends its pick to Washington thanks to the Marcus Smart trade, which also included a lottery-protected choice. So, with all of that settled, here is where the NBA Draft order sits before our random drawing tiebreakers and the upcoming lottery.

2025 NBA Draft Lottery odds

*pick belongs to 76ers if 1-6, Thunder if 7-30

**pick belongs to Kings if 1-12, Hawks if 13-30

When is the NBA Draft Lottery?

The 2025 NBA Draft Lottery will be held on May 12. That is when we will find who will get the No. 1 pick and chance to draft Flagg. For now, we have a good chunk of the order determined.

Something you likely noticed is that barely any playoff teams control their own picks. Outside of the top 12, only the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics currently control the picks that originally belonged to them. That is a function of the all-in NBA we currently exist within. Most of those teams at the back end of the first round traded draft picks for veteran help at some point in the recent past. They’re now paying for that privilege.

All told, we are headed for a first round of the postseason in which more than half of the 30 picks in the first round could change hands before the draft even begins. Add all of the trading that inevitably comes during the draft itself and barely anybody outside of the lottery uses their own picks anymore. This order represents where we sit now, but when the dust settles, expect many more of these picks to change hands.

Betis 1-2 Villarreal: resultado y resumen | LaLiga EA Sports 2024/2025 | Fútbol

0

66′

Sandro Tonali under investigation again over illegal gambling

0

The Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been named as being part of an investigation by Italian prosecutors into illegal gambling — but the club have no concerns about any threat of new sporting sanctions.

Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI reported that Tonali and his fellow Italy international Nicolò Fagioli, who plays for Fiorentina, are among a dozen Serie A players suspected of using illicit betting platforms, though not of betting on football.

Newcastle are understood to have been assured the investigation relates to the original case that led to Tonali being banned from football for ten months and that he will not face further sanctions.

Roma’s midfielder Leandro Paredes and the Argentina winger Ángel Di María, who played for Juventus during the 2022-23 season, are among the other footballers named by news agencies as suspects in an investigation by prosecutors in Milan.

A number of players still at Juventus — Weston McKennie, Mattia Perin, Raoul Bellanova and Samuele Ricci — are also among those named as being investigated for poker games and betting on sporting events on the illegal gambling platforms. They could be fined if charges are proved.

In a statement, the Milan prosecutor’s office announced that it had placed under house arrest “for illegal gambling activities and money laundering” five people who organised and managed the clandestine platforms from a jewellery store in the city.

The footballers are not among those arrested and if found guilty would only face a small punishment, most likely a fine, from the criminal case, though they could face sanctions from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), according to the agencies.

Tonali was banned for ten months in October 2023 for betting on football matches, including those involving his old team AC Milan while he was still playing for them.

Both Tonali and Fagioli said they were addicted to gambling and have sought treatment.

McKennie among 13 players named in illegal gambling probe – reports

0

MILAN — United States midfielder Weston McKennie is among 13 soccer players being investigated for illegal online betting in Italy, according to widespread media reports.

A new investigation by Milan prosecutors stems from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing to plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction.

Juventus midfielder Fagioli — currently on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle’s Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team’s games — at the time AC Milan.

The duo are also named in the new investigation, along with Fagioli’s then-Juventus teammate McKennie and nine other current or former Serie A players, as well as Leeds defender Junior Firpo.

There is no evidence that the other players ever gambled on soccer matches but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices.

The players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports. As such they do not risk a ban but instead a maximum fine of 250 euros ($284) from Italian authorities.

Tonali and Fagioli have also been accused of promoting those sites among their teammates and other soccer players.

Fagioli said in a deposition: “I pointed out to [former Aston Villa forward Nicolò] Zaniolo illegal sites where he could make online bets, on roulette or poker … the organisers of the sites had told me that they would give me some advantages if I brought other bettors.”

A message about Zaniolo found on Fagioli’s phone also said: “Bravo, capture him, work for me.”

2025 Masters: As Corey Conners contends and Taylor Pendrith debuts, their coach fights from afar

0

AUGUSTA, Ga. – As he stood on the first tee box Thursday morning at Augusta National Golf Club, just minutes from hitting the first shot of his Masters career, Taylor Pendrith looked up at the strikingly blue sky, a crisp breeze hitting his face, and smiled.

Man, how he wishes Herbie could’ve been here.

Herb Page, the retired Kent State golf coach, had attended the Masters debuts of all his former players, starting in 2004 when he caddied for Ben Curtis in the Monday practice round, and again with both Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes. But on Thursday at 9 a.m. sharp, Page found himself 675 miles from Augusta National, at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, receiving his third of six doses in his latest batch of chemotherapy.

“I’m making the turn,” Page joked as he watched the coverage from his laptop, wearing a green Masters polo and green Masters hat while an IV administered the drugs into his body.

The 74-year-old Page has lost 40 pounds, down to 112, since being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last fall. Thankfully, he hasn’t lost his sense of humor.

Earlier this week, upon the release of the starting times for the opening two rounds, Page texted both Pendrith and Conners:

Hey, how about Thursday’s tee sheet?

Herb Page, 9 a.m.

Taylor Pendrith, 9:03 a.m.

Corey Conners, 9:14 a.m.

Pendrith responded: Coach, at 9, I’m going to look up in the sky and think about you.

“And he bogeys the first hole,” Page adds. “Nerves.”

Pendrith’s introduction to the Masters began with a snap-hook into the left trees and ended with a disappointing 5-over 77. Conners, though, fired an opening 68 with birdies on three of his final four holes.

“Lookout!” Page said via text as Conners sprinted out of the gates, only behind leader Justin Rose and tied for second with reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and last year’s runner-up Ludvig Åberg.

“He’s always watching us and always cheering us on,” Conners said.

Page was on top of the world last September, having just spent eight days at Royal Montreal watching Conners, Pendrith and Hughes play a home Presidents Cup. Hughes scored Page an all-access credential for the week, and the Kent State legend, fully decked out in international gear, even managed to sneak his way into team meetings.

“I was the mascot,” Page said, laughing.

In fact, during Pendrith’s matches, International assistant captain Ernie Els’ job was to shuttle Page around and keep him visible. As Els told Page, “When he sees you, he smiles. He loves seeing you.”

“I remember finishing up that Friday and watching the rest of the matches with him,” Pendrith recalled. “Then Corey and Mac joined us. It was such a surreal moment. That was the last time we were all together.”

Not long after the Presidents Cup, Page and his wife, Paula, were back at their winter home in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, when Page visited the local clinic, thinking he had some sort of urinary tract infection. The physician’s assistant working that day could’ve sent Page on his way with some antibiotics, but he decided to run some extra blood work. The next morning Page was ordered to drive into Charleston for further tests and scans.

By the evening, Page had received the terrifying diagnosis: He had the same cancer that took three of his friends, all within six to eight months, including his mentor Don James, who coached Kent State football teams that included Page, a tough-as-nails kicker and three-sport athlete for the Golden Flashes, and a high-IQ safety by the name of Nick Saban.

When Page phoned Pendrith to tell him, Pendrith’s wife, Megan, a hematology and oncology nurse, started crying before Pendrith could even process it.

“It’s a death sentence,” Page said of pancreatic cancer. “But most people don’t find it until it’s third or fourth stage.”

One of Page’s mottos is, “I’m the luckiest man alive” – and he still feels that way. Because Page was barely into stage one, he was eligible for a surgery called the Whipple, which involves removing the head of the pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder and part of the bile duct. Page’s procedure was scheduled for Dec. 8 at the Cleveland Clinic, but two days before Page developed pancreatitis and spent weeks bedridden and hooked to a feeding tube.

It wasn’t until Christmas Eve that Page’s surgery was complete.

“They did a hell of a job, and they think they’ve got it all,” said Page, who was released from the hospital on Jan. 3 and started his first round of chemo in late February. “We’ll know more in a few weeks, but the prognosis is very, very good. I’m lucky I walked into that clinic.”

In many ways, Page has made his own luck over the years. When he launched the golf program at Kent State in 1978, the team had two scholarships and zero golf balls. But with a fiery, never-quit attitude, Page recruited hard and inspired his guys to compete harder to the tune of 17 NCAA Championship appearances, including a trip to match play at Riviera in 2012. On that historic squad:

Conners, a can’t-miss prospect and ball-striking machine out of Listowel, Ontario.

Hughes, a great putter from Hamilton, Ontario, who had an early habit of beating himself up.

And Pendrith, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, who was freakishly long, once winning a long-drive contest at the Canadian Boys Junior by hitting 184 mph ball speed, but equally raw.

All three are now not only PGA Tour members but PGA Tour winners.

“I had Pendrith, Hughes and Conners, and we couldn’t even win the national championship,” Page said, before delivering the punch line. “They should’ve fired me.”

Page, who underwent a quintuple heart bypass in 2016 and total knee replacement two years later, retired from coaching in 2019. But he’s remained close with his players. After a poor putting performance at Memorial last summer, Pendrith drove two hours to Kent, Ohio, for a putting lesson from Page.

“We spent four hours on the putting green,” Pendrith said. “It was cool to be back there and have him beat some sense into me.”

Earlier this year, Pendrith and Hughes were grilling steaks together when Pendrith offered Page and Paula two Masters badges.

“It pained him to have to say no to being here,” Pendrith said.

Conners planned on visiting Page during the offseason until Page’s monthlong hospitalization. He hopes to see him soon, perhaps next time with a green jacket in hand. He’s been close enough to dream a few times, posting three top-10s but just not able to make enough putts when it mattered.

“It just takes something special to get yourself to the top of the leaderboard,” Conners said. “That’s just been missing, I guess.”

Thursday’s round by Conners was certainly special. He missed only one fairway and hit all but four greens in regulation. He left himself short putts for birdie on three of the par-5s before his center-shafted putter, which his dad, Mike, encouraged him to put in the bag before last month’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, was responsible for back-to-back birdie makes from outside of 15 feet.

Most fired up by Conner’s performance was Page, who also texted: Hot putter? Corey? Yes!

Conners was equally delighted upon hearing that Page was locked in and cheering from the hospital: “No one is more of a fighter than Coach Page. I know he’s doing everything he can.”

“I’m missing today,” said Page, as a machine beeped loudly in the background. “But to have my players, it’s very rewarding. There have been so many text messages; they know what I’m going through, and to have guys like Conners reach out last night, saying he’s thinking of me, and Pendy, same thing. He said, ‘Coach, you’ll be there in 2026 and so will I.’

“I’m not an inspiration to those guys; they’re an inspiration to me right now.”
