‘Twitter killer’ who murdered nine in Japan reportedly executed | Japan

0

Japan has executed a man dubbed the “Twitter killer” who murdered and dismembered nine people he met online, in the nation’s first enactment of the death penalty since 2022.

Takahiro Shiraishi was sentenced to death for murdering and dismembering nine people he met on the social media platform, now called X, in 2017. He was hanged on Friday.

Shiraishi is said to have lured his mostly female victims, aged between 15 and 26, to his apartment near Tokyo, where he killed them and cut up their bodies.

He admitted murdering all nine, having made contact with suicidal victims on Twitter and offering to help them die, before stashing bits of bodies in coolers around his small apartment, according to media reports.

Justice minister Keisuke Suzuki said Shiraishi’s crimes included “robbery, rape, murder … destruction of a corpse and abandonment of a corpse”.

“Nine victims were beaten and strangled, killed, robbed, and then mutilated with parts of their bodies concealed in boxes, and parts discarded in a garbage dump,” Suzuki told reporters in Tokyo on Friday.

“After much careful consideration, I ordered the execution,” he said.

Japan and the United States are the only two members of the Group of Seven industrialised economies to retain the death penalty.

There is overwhelming public support for the practice, and a 2024 Japanese government survey of 1,800 respondents showed 83% saw the death penalty as “unavoidable”.

In 2022, Tomohiro Kato was hanged for an attack in 2008 in which he rammed a rented two-tonne truck into a crowd in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, before getting out and going on a stabbing spree, in an attack that killed seven people.

As of December 2023, 107 prisoners were waiting for their death sentences to be carried out, the Justice Ministry told the AFP news agency. It is always done by hanging.

The law stipulates that executions must be carried out within six months of a final verdict after appeals are exhausted.

In reality, however, most inmates are left on tenterhooks in solitary confinement for years – and sometimes decades – causing severe consequences for their mental health.

There is widespread criticism of the system and the government’s lack of transparency over the practice. Inmates are often informed of their impending death at the last minute, typically in the early morning before it happens.

The high-profile executions of the Shoko Asahara and 12 former members of the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult took place in 2018. Aum Shinrikyo orchestrated the 1995 sarin gas attacks on Tokyo’s subway system, killing 14 people and making thousands more ill.

Japan executes ‘Twitter killer’ who murdered nine

0

Japan has executed a man who murdered nine people in 2017, the first time since 2022 that the country has enacted capital punishment.

The serial killings by Takahiro Shiraishi, dubbed the “Twitter killer”, had shocked the country and triggered debate over how suicide was discussed online.

Shiraishi, then 30, lured his victims – most of them young women between the ages of 15 and 26 – to his apartment, before strangling and dismembering them.

The killings came to light in October 2017, when police found body parts in the Japanese city of Zama, near Tokyo, when they were searching for one of the victims.

Warning: Readers may find some details in this story distressing.

Shiraishi later admitted to murdering nine suicidal victims and revealed that he got acquainted with them on Twitter, the social media platform now known as X.

He then told them he could help them die, and in some cases claimed he would kill himself alongside them.

His Twitter profile contained the words: “I want to help people who are really in pain. Please DM [direct message] me anytime.”

Nine dismembered bodies were found in coolers and tool boxes when officers visited his flat, which was dubbed by media outlets as a “house of horrors”.

While prosecutors sought the death penalty for Shiraishi, his lawyers argued for the lesser charge of “murder with consent”, claiming his victims had given their permission to be killed.

They also called for an assessment of his mental state.

Shiraishi later disputed his own defence team’s version of events and said he killed without the victims’ consent.

Hundreds of people showed up at his verdict hearing in December 2020, when he was sentenced to death.

The murders also prompted a change by Twitter, which amended its rules to state users should not “promote or encourage suicide or self-harm”.

Kings’ Dylan Cardwell: Comes to terms with Kings

0

Cardwell agreed to a two-way contract with Sacramento on Thursday, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.com reports.

Cardwell is known for his ability to finish at the rim, converting on 70.0 percent of his field-goal attempts during his final season at Auburn while also averaging 2.5 offensive rebounds over 38 games. He works just as hard on the defensive end, as shown by 1.4 swats per matchup during the 2024-25 campaign.

Sacramento Kings sign Dylan Cardwell to contract after 2025 NBA Draft

0

Dylan Cardwell has agreed to a two-way contract with the Sacramento Kings, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. Cardwell played five seasons with the Auburn Tigers before going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Cardwell spent four seasons as a rotational piece in the Tigers lineup before starting all 38 games he appeared in as a fifth-year senior. He finished his career averaging 4.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game across 166 total games played for Auburn.

During the 2024-25 season, Cardwell played a pivotal role in sending the Tigers to the Final Four for the second time in program history. They would fall short of the national title game, running into eventual NCAA champions Florida Gators in the national semifinal.

Cardwell scored nine points and logged eight rebounds during the 79-73 loss, his final game in an Auburn uniform. The Tigers finished the season with a 32-6 record and was considered the No. 1 overall seed heading into the NCAA Tournament this past March.

More than anything on the court, Cardwell’s head coach at Auburn for those five years, Bruce Pearl, raved about his veteran big man’s character in the locker room. He provided a glowing review of Cardwell ahead of his professional career.

“He’s our team minister,” Pearl said. “We call him Cap because he’s our captain. A lot of guys talk the talk. I’m probably one of them. Dylan talks the talk, and he walks the walk. He’s a man of faith. He is an impeccable human being, and our guys listen to him. They respect him. And off the floor, he’s got a servant’s heart. He has time and patience for everybody. He’s charitable.

“He’s the guy that I would like my daughters to marry, OK? I mean, he is the guy. And I tell you what, guys like Dylan Cardwell should give us hope for our humanity. They really, really should because he’s an incredible individual. And the thing about it is, he shares it and it spreads, and it’s infectious and other guys want to be like him.”

Cardwell isn’t the first former Auburn Tiger to agree to a two-way deal after the NBA Draft as former teammate Miles Kelly will join Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks to fight for his spot on the roster this offseason. Moreover, Johni Broome was selected No. 35 overall in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Karol G to Bring ‘Tropicoqueta’ to The Tonight Show: Watch Sneak Peak

0

Karol G is set to bring her “tropicoqueta” vibes to late night.

The Colombian superstar returns to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday (June 26) night to debut “Papasito,” the sizzling bilingual number from her latest album, Tropicoqueta.

In an exclusive 30-second sneak peek shared with Billboard, Karol G lights up the stage with a jubilant performance of “Papasito,” wearing a tropical-inspired black two-piece outfit that perfectly complements the song’s jubilant rhythm.

But if the preview wasn’t enough to spark anticipation, first-look photos of Karol G in a shimmering, skintight snakeskin dress — evoking Jessica Rabbit vibes — will have fans buzzing. The eye-catching shots also captures Karol G dancing alongside Jimmy Fallon, and speculation is swirling that this moment ties into “la hora loca,” a theme off the LP’s title track.

Last Friday, the Medellín hitmaker told Billboard Español, “At parties, the DJ always calls out, ‘It’s time for la hora loca [crazy hour],’ and everybody has to get up — a call to action. They hand out party hats, sunglasses, little props, and everyone comes together in the middle to start dancing to songs with choreography. So I said, “If I’m going to have a super Latin album that pays homage to everything we are as Latinos — it needs to go deep into our Colombian culture too.” And I thought, “I need to create a song that people will play during ‘la hora loca.’”

This marks Karol G’s second appearance on Fallon’s show; her first was in 2021 when she was rocking the blue hair era.

Catch the full episode tonight, Thursday, June 26, from 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC, with streaming available on Peacock.

Ohio legislature clears path for Browns to leave Cleveland, despite Art Modell Law

0

The Browns have found a way to beat Cleveland.

With litigation pending over whether the Art Modell Law keeps the Browns from moving out of downtown Cleveland to suburban Brook Park, the Ohio legislature has revised the Modell law in a way that makes the legal issue moot.

Via Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan, the change to the Modell Law was among nearly 600 amendments to the state budget. It allows Ohio pro sports teams who play in tax-supported facilities to move within Ohio when their leases expire.

Basically, the change clarifies that the goal of the Modell Law was to keep pro sports teams from leaving the state. Which also opens the door, in theory, for Columbus to try to pilfer the Bengals or the Browns, in theory.

The bill will be effective if/when Governor Mike DeWine signs it into law.

Ruiter also reports that the Browns plan to close on the purchase of 176 acres in Brook Park this week. It will be the location of the new dome stadium that is scheduled to open in 2029.

The state will be contributing $600 million to the project. With Cuyahoga County insisting it won’t cooperate, the Browns will have to come up with the rest of the money through other sources.

China warns Philippines against ‘self-inflicted destruction’ by hosting US missile systems

0

China’s defence ministry has warned the Philippines against “self-inflicted destruction” by hosting US missile systems and denounced Manila’s plan to encourage fishermen to operate in disputed South China Sea waters.

Meanwhile, the Chinese embassy in Manila dismissed drug-smuggling allegations by Philippine military officials as “baseless slander”.

The United States has reportedly decided to deploy additional strategic Typhon missile systems in the Philippines after transporting the mid-range missile launcher to Luzon last year.

The US Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) anti-ship missiles, used in last month’s Balikatan joint exercise, would also remain as a “deterrent against coercion”, the Philippine military said.

Manila’s move to introduce these strategic weapons was “binding itself to the US war machine”, which would undermine regional security and stability and sabotage the common interests of regional nations, Chinese defence ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang said in Beijing on Thursday.

“Inviting wolves into the house will backfire, leading to self-destruction. They will destroy their own homes,” Zhang said.
