Confirmed line-ups | Eintracht Frankfurt vs Spurs on 17 April

0

We can confirm the starting line-ups and substitutes for this evening’s decisive Europa League quarter-final second leg encounter at Eintracht Frankfurt (8pm UK).

Ange Postecoglou has made one change from last week’s first leg 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it is five changes from Sunday’s Premier League trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie return to the back line in place of Archie Gray, Ben Davies and Djed Spence, while Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall replace Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in midfield.

Amongst our substitutes, Kevin Danso returns from injury for his first involvement since early March and Wilson Odobert is back in after being rested at Wolves.

Our full line-up is as follows…

Starting XI: Vicario, Pedro Porro, Romero (c), van de Ven, Udogie, Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison, Johnson, Solanke, Tel.

Substitutes: Austin, Whiteman, Spence, Davies, Danso, Gray, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Moore, Odobert, Richarlison.

Frankfurt vs Tottenham: Son Heung-Min to miss Europa League clash

0

Ange Posetcoglou has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-Min will miss Thursday’s crucial Europa League quarterfinal second leg meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt due to a foot injury.

Son has not travelled with the squad to Germany after being absent from the Spurs team that lost 4-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The north London club drew 1-1 with Frankfurt in the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week.

“He has been battling with a foot problem. It’s got too painful so we made a decision to leave him at home,” Postecoglou told a news conference on Wednesday.

“Sonny tried really hard. We left him out at the weekend to try to allow him time to recover but he couldn’t make it. We’ve had these challenges like this all year, this is just another.”

The South Korea international’s absence from the squad will have come as a major blow to Postecoglou.

The Australian’s position as head coach is under intense pressure following Spurs’ disastrous season in which they have suffered 17 Premier League defeats and lie 15th in the table as a result.

A failure to build upon a promising first season under Postecoglou, exacerbated by a mid-season injury crisis, has left Spurs with only the promise of a Europa League triumph to save their season and end their 17-year trophy drought.

Illinois senior Luke Altmyer’s ties to Josh Heupel’s coaching tree

0

Luke Altmyer completed his second season as Illinois’ quarterback in 2024.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior started all 13 games and led Illinois to a 10-3 record in 2024, tying the program’s single-season wins record.

He completed 386-of-617 passing attempts for 4,600 yards, 35 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, while rushing for 499 yards and seven touchdowns on 193 attempts for the Fighting Illini from 2023-24. Altmyer also recorded one reception for three yards in 2024.

According to Illinois, Altmyer leads the nation in career game-winning drives in the final minute and in overtime with five.

In his final season at Ole Miss in 2022 under head coach Lane Kiffin, he appeared in four games, including one start, earning a redshirt. Charlie Weis Jr. and John David Baker were co-offensive coordinators at Ole Miss in 2022.

Altmyer played in five games for the Rebels in 2021 with Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby serving as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Lebby was Josh Heupel’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UCF in 2019, while overseeing signal-callers in 2018 with the Knights.

Altmyer committed to Ole Miss over Florida State, LSU, Mississippi State and Oregon. He is from Starkville High School in Starkville, Mississippi. His father, Chad Altmyer, has been the team orthopedic surgeon for Mississippi State and completed his general surgery internship at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee.

Paradise Season 2 Is in Production: Showrunner Shares 1st Look on Set

0

Buckle up, Paradise fans! Showrunner Dan Fogelman revealed a first look at season 2 while production is underway, and things did not seem like they were going great for Sterling K. Brown’s character, Xavier Collins.

“Season Two not playing around,” Dan, 49, captioned the picture of Sterling, 49, filming a scene for Paradise season 2 via Instagram on Wednesday, April 16.

In the image, Sterling was looking up toward something out of the frame, and one of his eyes had a red ring around the iris. Fans immediately took to the comments section to express their fear about the fate of the character.

“Sterling is THE STAR!! Y’all better leave that man alone!!” one Instagram user wrote.

Another person added, “He better make it back to them kids!!”

Paradise season 1 quickly became a huge hit on Hulu after it premiered on January 26, and featured several big names in starring roles. In the first episode, viewers watched as Xavier discovered the body of the President of the United States, Cal Bradford (James Marsden), in his bedroom at what appeared to be the White House. However, by the end of the premiere, fans learned Paradise was not the average political thriller.

Cal, Xavier and a group of 25,000 other people had been chosen to live in an underground community after the rest of the population was seemingly destroyed by a global catastrophe. Each episode revealed more and more of what was really going on, including everything from manipulated elections to surveillance, secret agendas and a growing resistance movement among the residents.

Disney/Brian Roedel

Xavier spent the entire first season of Paradise searching for the person responsible for Cal’s death, all while seemingly blaming the president for his wife Teri Collins’ death. Fans learned that Teri (Enuka Okuma) wasn’t able to get out of Atlanta, Georgia, in time to make it to the plane taking the chosen residents to the underground community. Cal had previously promised Xavier that he would make sure Teri made it, and when she didn’t, it put an enormous strain on their relationship.

However, in the final episode of season 1, Xavier was told by Sinatra (Julianne Nichols), self-made tech billionaire and architect behind the community, that Teri survived. She played a recording of Teri’s voice as a way to bargain with Xavier not to kill her. Sinatra also implied that Xavier’s daughter, Presley (Aliyah Mastin), had been killed. Before Xavier could pull the trigger on his gun and kill Sinatra, Agent Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom) shot her in the neck, leaving her wounded but alive.

The season ended with Sinatra lying in a coma and Xavier making his way to the surface to search for Teri.

Hulu announced in February that Paradise had been renewed for season 2.

Paradise is renewed for Season 2! Let’s go! #ParadiseHulu is now streaming on Hulu and with #HuluOnDisneyPlus. New episode Tuesday!” the series’ official Instagram page wrote alongside a video of Sterling.

The actor shared the news by showing the words “Season 2” written on his palm, a wink to an incident with his character in the first season.

Fans were worried they would have to wait years for a second season, but Dan quickly put their fears to rest.

“Please don’t wait two years to give us season 2 of Paradise @hulu,” a fan wrote via X on March 4.

Dan replied, “We start shooting in just a few weeks. It won’t be 2 years I promise! #Paradise.”

Manchester United vs Lyon live updates: Europa League game latest score and goal alerts

0

12′ Manchester United 1-0 Lyon (3-2 agg.)

It was a lovely move from Manchester United to take the lead.

Noussair Mazraoui, on the right of the back three, powered it forward with a high pass, Bruno Fernandes making a curved run beyond the Lyon defence and latching onto it.

He pinged it horizontally into the penalty area, where Alejandro Garnacho, making a run from right to left, took a fantastic first touch to burst into the box, beyond Jordan Veretout and the static Niakhate, who couldn’t keep up.

Garnacho from the byline, Hojlund dragged marker Mata away with a run towards goal, Garnacho cut it sideways along the six-yard box… where Manuel Ugarte was crashing the box to pass it into the largely unprotected net.

Lovely move.

VAR checked the offside but it was fine!

Aaron Rodgers slams Aaron Glenn for contentious meeting that ended Jets career

0

It sounds like Aaron Rodgers’ last meeting with the Jets was a lot like his first game with the team — short and painful.

Rodgers ripped new Jets coach Aaron Glenn during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday. It was the first time Rodgers has spoken since the Jets made the decision in February to release the quarterback.

Rodgers, 41, flew from his California home to New Jersey in early February for what he thought would be an extended meeting with Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey. Instead, the meeting lasted just 15 minutes, and Glenn did not show “ample respect,” according to Rodgers.

Rodgers said he and Glenn began speaking, then Glenn went “running out of the room” to get Mougey.

“That was kind of strange,” Rodgers said. “I think we are going to have this long conversation. I’ve flown across the country, and 20 seconds in he goes and he leans to the edge of his seat and says, ‘So, you want to play football?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he was like, ‘We’re going in a different direction at quarterback.’

“I was kind of shocked. Not shocked because I didn’t think it was a possibility, but shocked because I just flew across the country and you could’ve told me this over the phone.”

Rodgers said the Jets were not interested in finding out whether he wanted to remain with the team or in his opinion on players he played with. Instead, they just wanted to know how he wanted to handle “the messaging” around his release.

“I don’t give a s–-t about the messaging. Why?” Rodgers said.

Rodgers said Glenn intimated that he was worried the four-time MVP would “undermine” him. Rodgers said Glenn told him he did not want to be speaking to the team and have the players then looking at Rodgers in the back of the room.

“It was a very strange meeting, for sure,” Rodgers. “There was no me pleading, ‘Please have me on the team.’ I don’t want to be a part of that. It was already a debacle in some cases. That whole situation was crazy. That was a little rogue by the head coach.”

Rodgers said he spent another 25 minutes at the team headquarters speaking to the training staff and equipment room staffers. He praised vice chairman Christopher Johnson but noticeably said nothing about Woody Johnson, Christopher’s brother and the chairman of the team.

“There’s obviously things that need to get fixed over there,” Rodgers said.

This caps the strange and disappointing two-year tenure of Rodgers with the Jets that really began with another appearance on “McAfee” when he said he wanted the Packers to trade him to the Jets. The trade became a reality in April 2023 with much fanfare. Rodgers’ first season ended after four plays when he tore his left Achilles tendon in the season opener against the Bills. He returned in 2024 but could only get the Jets to a 5-12 record.

The team announced it was releasing Rodgers in February and made the move official in March when the league year began. Justin Fields was signed to a two-year, $40 million contract to replace Rodgers at quarterback.

Rodgers is a free agent for the first time in his career, and the NFL has been waiting for his decision. He acknowledged speaking to the Giants, Steelers and Vikings, but would not give a full list of teams he has spoken to. The Giants signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and the Vikings have said they want to give J.J. McCarthy a chance to start, leaving the Steelers as his likely destination.

Rodgers called Giants coach Brian Daboll a “beautiful football mind.”

The 41-year-old said his focus right now is on his personal life, where two people close to him are dealing with serious situations. Rodgers said he is still open to retirement and does not feel like he has a deadline to sign with a team.

“I am trying to be open to everything and not specifically attached to anything when it comes to this decision,” he said. “I’m not holding anybody hostage.”

Braves Recall Alex Verdugo, Option Bryan De La Cruz

0

The Braves announced that they have recalled outfielder Alex Verdugo from Triple-A Gwinnett. Fellow outfielder Bryan De La Cruz was optioned down to Gwinnett as the corresponding move.

Verdugo, 29 next month, is a veteran with at least five years of major league service time. That means he can’t be optioned to the minors without his consent. However, he agreed to accept an optional assignment due to his lingering free agency. He remained unsigned until the second half of March, eventually getting a $1.5MM deal from Atlanta. Since he had missed spring training, he agreed to head down to the farm for a while, effectively as a delayed spring training.

His inability to get a deal to his liking earlier in the offseason was surely due to his poor platform season. He had hit .282/.338/.430 from 2018 to 2023, production which translated to a 106 wRC+. That means he was only 6% above league average but that was still decent production, especially considering he’s a solid outfield defender. But with the Yankees in 2024, he hit just .233/.291/.356 for a wRC+ of 83. He was actually pretty decent through the end of May but hit just .219/.274/.315 from June onwards. He then added 56 postseason plate appearances with a .208/.309/.313 line.

That gave him little momentum going into the winter, which led to his aforementioned struggle to get a deal. For Atlanta, they were probably happy that he was out still out there, as their outfield wasn’t in great shape at the end of last year. Ronald Acuña Jr. tore his ACL and missed the second half, with an expected return at some point during 2025. The club took a shot on Jarred Kelenic last year, which didn’t work, as he hit .231/.286/.393. Michael Harris II saw his production drop for a second straight season after his Rookie of the Year performance in 2022.

The club made one big splash to upgrade the outfield this winter, signing Jurickson Profar to a three-year, $42MM deal. But just 11 days after they signed Verdugo, it was reported that Profar had been given an 80-game suspension for a positive PED test. Given the close proximity, it’s possible Atlanta knew of Profar’s test at the time of the Verdugo deal, but with the appeal process having not yet run its course.

Since the Verdugo deal, things have broadly gotten worse for the club. They are out to a 5-13 start, with their outfield being one of the key problems. Kelenic is hitting .146/.239/.244 thus far and Harris is at .179/.208/.299. Before getting optioned today, De La Cruz put up a line of .191/.240/.213.

It’s unclear what sort of production Verdugo can provide, but even something like his diminished 2024 offense would be miles ahead of what the club has received from its outfield so far. For what it’s worth, Verdugo hit .207/.303/.448 during his recent optional assignment.

Verdugo, Kelenic and Harris are all lefties, so that’s likely to be the alignment against right-handed pitchers. Even after optioning De La Cruz, the club has a couple of righty-swinging outfielders in Stuart Fairchild and Eli White, giving manager Brian Snitker some ability to navigate around tough southpaws. Ideally, Verdugo can stabilize things somewhat as the club tries to get the season back on track. Acunña will perhaps start a rehab assignment soon and be back with the club in the coming weeks. That will cut into the playing time of someone, likely Kelenic or Verdugo, depending on what happens between now and then.

Notre Dame QB Steve Angeli expected to enter transfer portal after competing for starting job during spring

Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli is expected to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reports. Angeli spent the spring competing for starting reps with underclassmen CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey.

Angeli served as the primary backup quarterback over the last two seasons to transfers Riley Leonard and Sam Hartman. Despite not winning the job last year, coach Marcus Freeman prioritized keeping him on campus with a chance to win the starting job in 2025. He impressed in limited snaps, leading a key second quarter drive against Penn State in a come-from-behind 27-24 win to reach the national title game.

In three seasons, Angeli completed 72.5% of his passes for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns and only one interception. He showed off a quick release while throwing for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a 66-7 win over Purdue. Angeli started the 2023 Sun Bowl against Oregon State and exploded for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-8 victory.

However, Notre Dame has built up a talented homegrown quarterback room under coach Marcus Freeman. Carr, the grandson of Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, ranked as a top-50 national recruit and No. 1 player in the state of Michigan when he signed with the program in the Class of 2024. A year earlier, Minchey ranked as the No. 169 player in the No. 14 quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class.

With his on-field experience, Angeli should quickly rank among the best quarterbacks in the transfer portal. 247Sports rates him as the No. 3 available quarterback in the portal and potential fit for Tennessee as it plans to move on from quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Angeli has two years of eligibility remaining.
