Padres, Cubs both looking like contenders in the National League: 5 takeaways from their series in San Diego

0

Two weeks ago, a series that looked to be a clash of National League heavyweights turned out to be a lopsided affair, as the Dodgers swept the Braves to continue the dream start to their season and extend a miserable beginning for Atlanta.

This week, another marquee National League matchup arrived, with the Chicago Cubs visiting the red-hot San Diego Padres, and this time, the games lived up to the hype, offering an early litmus test for two contenders who already appear laser-focused on reaching October, even here in mid-April.

Here are five takeaways from the three-game set at Petco Park, which the Padres won 2-1, plus what to watch for both clubs moving forward.

Fernando Tatis Jr. isn’t striking out anymore

Ever since Fernando Tatis Jr. missed the entirety of the 2022 season because of an injury related to a motorcycle accident followed by an 80-game PED suspension, we’ve been wondering if and when we’d see him return to the MVP-caliber superstar he once appeared to be blossoming into. Well, so far in 2025, it might be happening: Through Wednesday, Tatis ranks in the top three in the National League in homers (6), stolen bases (6), batting average (.348), wRC+ (193) and fWAR (1.4). He homered twice in the series opener and drove in two runs in Wednesday’s 4-2 victory, including drawing a bases-loaded walk to conclude a 10-pitch battle with Cubs reliever Luke Little.

Tatis also didn’t strike out once across the three games against the Cubs, highlighting an intriguing element of his early success: He has cut down on the punchouts significantly. It’s not like Tatis was ever whiffing at Joey Gallo levels, but he had a 25% career strikeout rate entering 2025. So far this season, he has struck out in just 11.3% of plate appearances, and he’s making more contact than ever.

If his zero-strikeout series against the Cubs doesn’t wow you, consider this: Tatis’ streak of seven games without a strikeout earlier this season was the longest such streak of his career. This is reminiscent of Ronald Acuña Jr.’s stunning gains in plate discipline during his historic 2023, when he too entered the year with a 25% strikeout rate and then slashed it to 11% en route to an MVP award. Might a similar season be in store for Tatis? It sure seems to be trending that way.

The Cubs are going to rake with or without Matt Shaw

There were high expectations for top prospect Matt Shaw to make an immediate impact for the Cubs after he made the team out of spring training, but his rookie campaign got off to a rocky start, and he was optioned to Triple-A on Monday. It wasn’t an entirely shocking decision considering the degree to which he was struggling: Shaw was drawing walks and making the occasional standout defensive play at third base, but he was batting .172 with minimal power, and his underlying batted-ball data did not suggest he was getting particularly unlucky. He simply seemed overmatched.

In discussing the move, manager Craig Counsell reiterated the team’s long-term belief in Shaw, and we’ll see him again at some point later this summer. But if we’ve learned anything from the first few weeks, it’s that this team is going to hit whether Shaw is starring in the thick of an NL Rookie of the Year race or taking his time resetting in Triple-A. Kyle Tucker has fundamentally transformed this lineup in every way the Cubs could have hoped and has been the driving force for an offense that ranks second in runs per game (5.90), fourth in home runs (27), first in steals (29) and fifth in wRC+ (121). Although Chicago was outscored in the series 15-8, the Cubs outhit the Padres 27-23 and put together a bunch of good at-bats against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.

Beyond Tucker, Michael Busch appears to be taking another step forward, Seiya Suzuki is adjusting smoothly to his every-day DH duties, and Pete Crow-Armstrong is finding his stride at the plate. Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson really haven’t even gotten going yet, which suggests an even higher ceiling for this group once those two start to heat up. If Shaw can find his footing in the big leagues later this summer and reestablish himself at the hot corner, this will certainly be one of the more dangerous lineups in the National League — one no opponent will want to deal with come October.

The mercurial Cubs bullpen is a concern

Cubs relievers rank 27th in ERA, 28th in WHIP and 22nd in fWAR through three weeks of play, a concerning reality for a club that prioritized upgrading the bullpen in the offseason. But it’s also worth noting the beleaguered unit stepped up big time in two of their victories over the past week: on Sunday, when Colin Rea plus six relievers held the Dodgers to two runs to claim the series, and on Tuesday, when five bullpen arms were nearly flawless in relief of Shota Imanaga to secure a 10th-inning victory in San Diego.

Unfortunately, sandwiching Tuesday’s standout showing were a total meltdown from Nate Pearson and Eli Morgan on Monday behind Jameson Taillon and a messy effort from Little on Wednesday, in which he walked four batters in his season debut. This variance was also on display when the Padres visited Chicago earlier this month, as the Cubs’ bullpen allowed just one run in the first two wins but then collectively coughed up a 7-3 lead to lose the series finale.

With Justin Steele needing season-ending elbow surgery and Javier Assad still working his way back from an oblique injury, the current rotation is not in position to do all the heavy lifting, and the bullpen needs to step up more consistently so as to not squander the leads often afforded by this top-end offense. There’s talent in place for this to happen — Porter Hodge is nasty, Ryan Pressly is a proven veteran, and don’t sleep on hard-throwers Julian Merryweather and Daniel Palencia — but Counsell needs to find the right mix to rely on sooner rather than later.

The Padres won’t go undefeated at home, but can they make history?

On Tuesday, Chicago handed San Diego its first loss at Petco Park in 2025, ending an 11-game home winning streak that was tied for the fourth longest to start a season in MLB history. The Padres promptly bounced back Wednesday to clinch the series and push their home record to a remarkable 12-1. For as electric as the atmosphere at Petco Park has been since San Diego ascended to contender status, the Padres actually played better on the road the past three seasons. But if the past few weeks are any indication, they might be bucking that trend in 2025 in spectacular fashion.

It’s certainly a stretch to expect San Diego to sustain its .923 home winning percentage for the entirety of the season — that would equate to a 75-6 home record — but this hot start to its home slate is worth keeping an eye on relative to the best home records in league history. Here are the best single-season home winning percentages since the schedule shifted to 162 games with expansion in 1961 and how those teams fared in October:

  1. 1961 Yankees: 65-16 (.802%) — won World Series

  2. 1975 Reds: 64-17 (.790%) — won World Series

  3. 1998 Yankees: 62-19 (.765%) — won World Series

  4. 1995 Indians: 54-18 (.750%) — lost World Series

  5. 1969 Orioles: 60-21 (.741%) — lost World Series

  6. 2019 Astros: 60-21 (.741%) — lost World Series

  7. 1977 Phillies: 60-21 (.741%) — lost NLCS

  8. 1970 Orioles: 59-22 (.728%) — won World Series

  9. 2019 Dodgers: 59-22 (.728%) — lost NLDS

We’re a long way from finding out if this 2025 Padres squad will join this illustrious leaderboard. But if they can, history suggests that a deep playoff run would follow.

Both teams will continue to be tested in the coming weeks

Fresh off their six-game Southern California swing against the mighty Dodgers and Padres, an eight-game homestand awaits the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and the competition isn’t exactly easing up. First, another formidable NL West foe arrives in the D-backs, the team with which the Cubs split four games to open the post-Tokyo regular season and one with a lineup capable of matching Chicago’s high-powered offense. The Dodgers follow with a pair of games next week to complete their season series, and then the Phillies come to town for three next weekend before divisional play finally commences for the Cubbies, with trips to Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. If the Cubs are still atop the NL Central by the time the calendar flips to May, they will have surely earned it.

Meanwhile, the Padres have an interesting run of interleague showdowns on deck: three at Houston, three at Detroit and then back home for three against the Rays. Those are three tough customers, all of which boast stellar pitching staffs that should be ready to match up with San Diego’s stable of impact arms in each series. The Padres might look to be the more complete team than the Cubs at this stage, but keeping pace in the NL West is a notably more daunting task than doing so in the mediocre NL Central, so the road ahead might prove more challenging for San Diego.

If we’re lucky, this week won’t be the last time we see these two squads face off in 2025. After a season series in which both teams won three games and both teams scored 25 runs, a rematch on the October stage only seems right.

Dylan Efron Saves 2 Women From Drowning in Miami Beach Rescue

0

Zac Efron starred in the Baywatch movie, but his brother, Dylan Efron, was the one who found himself as a lifeguard while on vacation in Miami.

“It was really random,” Dylan, 33, recalled of the incident during the Thursday, April 17, episode of the “Brooke and Connor Make a Podcast.”

During a visit to South Beach on April 5, Dylan and his friend Brennan spotted people “screaming” in the water moments after they walked onto the sand. “The currents were ripping,” he recalled.

The Traitors winner said there were five girls with their “hands up screaming” and when he scanned the beach there were “no lifeguards around.” That’s when Dylan and Brennan jumped into action.

Related: How Dylan Efron Feels About Being Compared to Older Brother Zac Efron

Dylan Efron knows his most notable title is “Zac Efron’s younger brother” — and he wears the label with honor. “I love my brother. I’m so proud of him,” Dylan, 33, told Cosmopolitan in an interview published on Thursday, February 13. “If anything, it’s helped me with my career, so I have no issue with […]

“We just sprinted out there. There were two closest to us that already had a guy helping them in,” Dylan remembered. “There were three out further, so I swam one in and swam back for another girl.”

He reiterated how strong the current was in the area, saying, “From where we jumped in, we ended up, like, a football field length away.”

The reality star, who swam in college, noted it was “really real” and left the second girl he saved stunned.

“The last girl I swam in, I was just trying to calm her down and just saying, ‘Breath, breath,’” Dylan said. “She just wraps me in the biggest hug and doesn’t want to let go. We hugged for like a full minute. I’m like, ‘You’re safe, you’re good.’”

After she left go, he said he “just walked away.” While Dylan’s save made its way to social media, he insisted he’s not a hero.

“I feel like I did what most people would have done in that situation,” Dylan concluded.

Dylan is the younger brother of Zac, 37, but unlike his actor brother, he stayed out of the spotlight until he graduated from California Polytechnic State University in 2013. Dylan went on to work in Hollywood as a production coordinator and production assistant.

Things got heated when The Traitors contestants came for Dylan Efron‘s brother Zac Efron — and his acting skills. During the newest episode, which premiered on Thursday, January 16, Dylan, 32, called out Bob the Drag Queen at the roundtable banishment meeting. “I genuinely think he is a Traitor. Like what is an easier game […]

He joined forces with Zac in 2020 to produce his sibling’s Down to Earth With Zac Efron series, which documented the actor’s journeys around the world. Both Dylan and Zac are fans of the great outdoors and frequently share the travels with their fans — including surf sessions and more water activities.

Dylan gained even more fame earlier this year when he competed on season 3 of The Traitors. He was one of four joint winners for the season, which concluded in March.

That same month, Dylan’s latest documentary, The Fish That Saved a Village, premiered. “What started as a whispered legend led us deep into the jungle — just two friends, a camera, and a story we couldn’t ignore,” he wrote via social media, teasing the premise. “Hope you love it as much as we loved making it.”

If you aren’t already longing for warm summer days after a brutal, never-ending winter, allow Elizabeth Hurley to remind you of what you’re missing. The Austin Powers star has been sunning in the beautiful Maldives, and in addition to giving fans dreams of tropical getaways, she’s also serving up major swimsuit inspiration.

Hurley, 59, shared an idyllic video compilation of herself running on the beach at sunset, climbing over rocks, and dipping her toes into clear waters, set to Lana Del Rey’s “Say Yes to Heaven.” While every instance of paradise was enough to capture her 3.1 million Instagram followers’ attention, one thing in particular stood out: her itty-bitty string bikini. The Gossip Girl alum stunned in a teeny-tiny two-piece set in bright red, one of the season’s hottest color trends. To up the ante, the swimsuit had opulent gold chain links on her hips and bust to hold everything together.

It appears Hurley cannot get enough of this style, and you know what they say: if you like a piece of clothing, just get it in every color. Last week, the model posted another dreamy beach video in the exact same bikini style, although this time it was an earthy taupe. She wore the same shades and had her tresses tousled about in soft waves.

“The most glorious sunset in the glorious Maldives 💗,” she wrote that time.

But, seriously, if you need help with what to pack for your next island vacation, allow Hurley’s Instagram to be your one-stop-shop. In another flick, she showed off the perfect evening look.

The English star danced around in a flowy, creamy-white gown. The semi-sheer dress featured a criss-cross, high-low design, a plunging neckline, low back, and razor-thin halter straps. She paired the majestic dinnertime centerpiece with the same gold statement earrings, a gold chain necklace, and strappy wedge heels that she carried in her hands. Hurley finished her look off with soft, polished waves and rosy glam, complete with a smoky eye and glossy lips.

Cubs ace Justin Steele undergoes surgery on left elbow

0

Chicago Cubs ace left-hander Justin Steele underwent elbow surgery on Friday, he announced on social media.

Post-surgery, he posted a smiling photo on X from his hospital bed, his arm heavily wrapped and resting on a pillow.

“Appreciate the prayers and thoughts.. God is good,” he captioned the photo.

Earlier in the day, he wrote this:

“Surgery today. Just wanted to take some time to say thank you to everyone who has sent their thoughts and prayers. Truly means the world to me at the number of people who have reached out to my family and me. It’s appreciated beyond belief. I’ll be back soon and better than ever.”.

Steele, 29, beat the Cubs to the announcement on Friday. It was known he would have reconstructive elbow surgery and miss the rest of the season, but it was unclear immediately if he had Tommy John surgery or a partial repair.

Steele is two years removed from being an All-Star selection and finishing fifth in National League Cy Young Award voting in 2023, when he went 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 30 starts.

Steele was 3-1 through four starts this season, with a 4.76 ERA and five home runs allowed through 22⅔ innings. His last outing on April 7 saw him toss seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and just three hits against the Texas Rangers.

In five seasons with the Cubs, he is 32-22 with a 3.30 ERA in 102 games (91 starts), tallying 517 strikeouts and 155 walks in 506⅔ frames.

Alexander Zverev tie interrupted as heckler draws attention to domestic abuse allegations | Tennis | Sport

0

Alexander Zverev’s Bavarian International victory over Tallon Griekspoor was interrupted by a heckler referencing domestic abuse allegations made against the German. Leading 6-5 in the second set against his Dutch opponent, Zverev asked for a member of the crowd to be removed from the venue over the comments.

Last June, the 27-year-old settled a case brought by a former girlfriend. He paid £171,000 to terminate the case, but the fee was not an admission of guilt. Zverev has always maintained his innocence over an allegation that he abused his ex-girlfriend during an argument in 2020.

Zverev was reminded of the case during his match against Griekspoor. An individual sitting in the crowd made reference to the allegations.

Broadcast footage shows Zverev preparing to serve at 5-5 in the second set. He then clearly hears something being shouted, before a German individual’s voice is picked up by the courtside microphone.

At the change of ends, Zverev sat down to have a drink. More shouting is aimed at the world No. 3, who then asks umpire Fergus Murphy to have the man removed. “Fergus, Fergus, please kick him out?”

Murphy asks what the issue is, to which Zverev responds: “I don’t want to repeat it. It’s the same guy who did the same thing before my second serve once.”

Zverev went on to beat Griekspoor 6-7 7-6 6-4. He will play Fabian Marozsan in the semi-final tomorrow. It is unclear whether the individual who heckled Zverev was removed from their seat.

In January 2023, the ATP closed a 15-month investigation that was launched after another ex-girlfriend made an allegation of domestic abuse against Zverev. He denies those accusations, too.

Speaking last summer, Zverev said: “I do believe in the German system. I do believe in the truth, as well. I have to be certain that I do know what I did, I do know what I didn’t do. I do believe that I’m not going to lose this procedure. There’s absolutely no chance I am.”

It comes after a member of the crowd heckled Zverev during his speech after he lost the Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner. They bellowed “Australia believes Olya and Brenda”, referencing the two women who made the allegations.

After the case was settled last year, Zverev’s legal team said: “The settlement includes no determination or admission of guilt. The presumption of innocence remains.”

Cristiano, game over – AS.com

0

Oklahoma City bombing survivor vowed to change her life while trapped : NPR

Oklahoma City, Okla.— Saturday marks 30 years since the Oklahoma City bombing. It remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.

On the morning of April 19, 1995, Amy Downs remembers the sky in Oklahoma City as a perfect shade of blue.

“The red buds were all blooming, like it was a gorgeous spring morning,” said Downs, 28 years old at the time.

Her husband had dropped her off in front of the federal building where she worked in a credit union for employees. She checked in with her best friend Sonja Sanders, who was headed into the CEO’s office, then sat at her desk next to a big window overlooking downtown.

“And one of my coworkers, who was seven months pregnant, came and sat down beside me to ask me a question, and that’s when the bomb went off,” Downs said. “I heard screaming, then realized I was the one screaming. It’s pitch black, I can strain to open my eyes. I can’t move. I can barely breathe and it’s hot and it stinks and it’s burning my throat. And I remember wondering if I was dead or alive.”

She didn’t know it, but she was buried upside down under 10 feet of rubble, sandwiched between two slabs of concrete.

“And so at that point I really started experiencing what people talk about when they say they had life flashing before their eyes, just realizing that I had not really lived,” Downs remembers.

In her twenties Amy Downs says she lived a complacent, shallow existence.

Rescuers finally saw her hand sticking out of a pile of debris. After six and a half hours they pulled her out.

“I remember taking those first breaths of fresh air and just like promising God right then I will never live my life the same,” Downs said.

Over the following days she learned 168 people died, including her best friend Sonja Sanders and 17 of her coworkers. A third of the Alfred P. Murrah building had been destroyed by a homemade bomb; a deadly combination of fertilizer, diesel fuel and other chemicals hidden in a Ryder truck parked outside.

The next day, the FBI dug up the rear axle of that truck, which eventually led them to Timothy McVeigh, an extreme nationalist angered by the Waco siege two years earlier. He was tried, convicted and executed in 2001.

Downs recovered from her injuries but remained heartbroken over the loss of her friends and overwhelmed with survivor’s guilt. It was several weeks before she agreed to go to counseling.

“I went with like arms crossed, like I’m here because they’re making me and I don’t want to be here kind of thing,” she said. “And it was the best thing I could’ve done.”

She decided to follow through on some of the promises she made while trapped in the rubble— become a mom, go back to school and get healthy.

“I weighed 355 pounds,” Downs said. “I had joined Weight Watchers so many times that I think I could be banned.”

She decided to get surgery to reduce the size of her stomach and started riding her bike.

Ten years after the bombing, Downs was asked to volunteer at a memorial race for the victims.

“Well, I’m all emotional and moved because I’m seeing people cross the finish line, like old people, people with one leg, blade runners,” she said. “I’m like, oh my gosh. And I’m thinking if they can do it, I can do it. So I tell everybody I am gonna run next year. I’m gonna run in honor of Sonja.”

And that’s what she did. Then she found more races to run.

For her 50th birthday, Downs decided she wanted to do something epic, so she signed up for Ironman Arizona—a 2.4-mile swim, a 120-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

She hired a trainer and found friends who were competing. Her goal: to finish. On race day, she watched people bow out with injuries and doubted herself. She slogged through the day’s events all the way to the last mile of the run, sore and ready to collapse.

When trapped in the rubble of the Oklahoma city bombing in 1995 Amy Downs made a promise to herself to get healthy. Today she loves riding her bike and has competed in several races.

“But I could see the lights of the stadium,” she said.

That’s when someone in a golf cart approached her, asking for her number. She knew officials would disqualify her if she didn’t make the cutoff time.

“And I hear ‘Amy Downs has done it, she’s coming in,” Downs tearfully recalls. “‘Let’s let her hear you make some noise!’ And I hear this roar come from this stadium at midnight, y’all, midnight. These people are still there. I’m the last one.”

Today, Amy Downs is the author of the book Hope Is A Verb: My Journey Of Impossible Transformation. She’s also a mother and the CEO of the credit union she saw destroyed in 1995, and where she hired her best friend Sonja Sanders’ daughter, Savanna, to work as a teller and then helped her become an FBI agent.

Macomb County church acts out Stations of the Cross to mark Good Friday

0

As Christians across the world marked Good Friday on Friday, several local churches re-enacted the final moments leading to Easter Sunday.

At St. Isidore Church on 23 Mile in Macomb County, parishioners acted out the final day of Jesus’s life with Living Stations of the Cross. The church was filled as the 14 stations were acted out.

Christian churches across Metro Detroit marked Good Friday with various stations of the cross events. St. Fabian Catholic Church in Farmington Hills held Silhouette Stations of the Cross and Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit held lives stations.

Good Friday is part of Holy Week for Christians, which ends with Easter on Sunday.

Notre Dame football loses one of its quarterbacks to the transfer portal

0

It was almost inevitable after what we saw during Notre Dame football’s spring game that one of the three quarterbacks would move on. On Thursday, Steve Angeli entered the transfer portal according to CBS Sports Matt Zenitz.

The junior from New Jersey had sat behind two starters as he waited for his turn to run the Irish offense, but that opportunity never really presented itself. While he did start the 2023 Sun Bowl, leading Notre Dame to a 40-8 win over Oregon State with three passing touchdowns, coach Marcus Freeman still brought in transfer Riley Leonard for the next year.

Although it turned out to be the right move, Angeli played a huge part in the Irish’s College Football Playoff victory over Penn State, subbing for Leonard following an injury and guiding the Irish to a field goal just before the first half ended. Those three points ended up being huge; that was the margin of victory for Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, with younger players CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey looking much better this spring, Angeli saw the writing on the wall and will move on. We wish him the best of luck as he continues his collegiate career elsewhere.

Flat Rock church observes Good Friday with 8-foot cross

0

Billions of Christians around the world are observing Good Friday on April 18, and many churches will hold a devotion called Stations of the Cross.

St. John in the Wilderness church in Flat Rock holds a Stations of the Cross event each year. It takes multiple church members at a time to lift up the cross and take turns carrying it across the property and into the church.

Fr. Josh Stephens, St. John in the Wilderness Rector, said it’s one way that they are able to live through the story of Jesus.

LIST: EASTER EVENTS AND FESTIVITIES IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA THIS WEEKEND

“So we actually step into the story, and it’s a way that we pray with our entire selves, our bodies…you know our hearts, as we actually carry this large wooden cross for for Good Friday,” he said.

It’s really powerful.

Christians recognize Good Friday as the day Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross and died at Calvary. The stations of the cross cover 14 specific events beginning with the condemnation of Jesus and ending with his burial.

Father Josh said observing Good Friday in this way allows church members to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and pray about his sacrifice. He said he hopes those attending the service will remember that God knows about the suffering of his people.

We find that God is in complete solidarity with us.

“…and that somehow by being honest with God about our own experiences, and seeing God‘s experience as one of us gives us a lot of grace and it gives us a lot of hope,” he said.

GOD’S PIT CREW DELIVERS HOPE AND NEW HOMES TO HURRICANE-AFFECTED YANCEY COUNTY FAMILIES

The cross is made of cedar by a member of the church. The Stations of the Cross is a historical event dating back to the early Christian church.

Father Josh said all are welcome to join their Easter services on Sunday. They will take place at St. John in the Wilderness, 1895 Greenville Highway, at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m.
