What’s open and closed on Easter Day 2025?

0

CNN
 —

Before you hop out the door this Easter Sunday, it may be worth checking what’s open as some places aren’t cracking their doors.

Easter falls on April 20 this year. While it’s not a federal holiday, it’s widely observed across the US, and many businesses either close or shorten their hours.

According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to shell out $23.6 billion on Easter celebrations. So whether you’re hunting for last-minute groceries, grabbing a bite to eat or planning to just enjoy the day, here’s what’s open (and closed) this Easter Sunday.

Retail and grocery stores

Walmart, Kroger’s, Food Lion, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s (except for one store in Portland, Maine) will all be open during regular hours. Still, it’s best to double-check with your local store, as hours could vary.

Several major retailers will be closed for the holiday, including Target, Aldi, Lowe’s and Best Buy. Warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club will also shut their doors for the day.

Shoppers hoping to browse clothing or home goods will also have to wait — TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Burlington and JCPenney will all be closed on Easter.

Most major restaurant chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Wendy’s will be open on Easter Sunday, but hours can vary depending on the location.

Sit-down favorites like Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden and Golden Corral will be open during their regular hours. Chains like Applebee’s, IHOP and Panera Bread may have adjusted schedules, so it’s a good idea to call ahead or check online.

Some popular spots, including Zaxby’s, Chipotle, CAVA, Raising Cane’s and In-N-Out, will be closed for the holiday.

Most banks will be closed on Easter Sunday, although that’s not out of the ordinary since many do not operate on Sundays. Online and mobile banking services will still be available.

Markets are always closed on the weekends. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will trade on Monday as usual.

US Postal Service offices will be closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery, in keeping with standard Sunday operations, but Express Critical will be available.

Most FedEx services also won’t be available, though FedEx offices will be open on modified hours and Custom Critical will be available.

Greenville church celebrates Good Friday with “Stations of the Cross” event

0

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – As Easter weekend begins, folks across the East are starting to celebrate and to remember the meaning behind the holiday.

Some parishioners carried a cross at St.Peter Catholic Church in Greenville as they observed the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.

The tradition is centuries old and encourages people to walk with the cross to stations near the church to commemorate Jesus’ walk bearing the cross.

“One of the main things we have to remember is that God entered the world for this purpose.” Father Jim Magee, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, said. “We recognize from that the great love he has for us from that. It is a very powerful message that people need to hear in their lives.”

The Stations of the Cross has been an ongoing event at St. Peter Catholic Church for more than 40 years.

What has happened to Aryna Sabalenka in Stuttgart which is being called ‘odd’ and not ideal for her French Open preparation

0

Aryna Sabalenka is yet to play her first clay court match of the season.

The world number one was victorious last time out as Sabalenka beat Jessica Pegula in the final of the Miami Open.

Sabalenka was set to return in Stuttgart for her first appearance on clay in 2025, but hasn’t taken to the court as of yet.

Entering the event as the number one seed, Sabalenka skipped the first round and advanced to the quarterfinals when Anastasia Potopova withdrew due to injury.

Therefore, with just three days left of the competition, the WTA Tour’s top-ranked player still hasn’t played her first match in Stuttgart.

Ahead of her quarterfinal clash with Elise Mertens on Saturday, many have shared their concerns as to how this week’s schedule may have harmed Sabalenka’s French Open preparations.

Mitch Michaels says Aryna Sabalenka’s schedule in Stuttgart is ‘odd’ and looks ahead to the French Open

On the Inside-In Tennis Podcast, host Mitch Michaels shared his thoughts on Sabalenka’s first clay-court tournament of 2025.

“It is crazy how the schedule works. She has a bye and a walkover,” he said.

“They are off because of the schedule, because of the rules, no tennis on Good Friday. So the final will actually be on a Monday.

“So [Aryna] Sabalenka doesn’t play her first match in this tournament until Saturday. Hanging out in Stuttgart and going right to the quarterfinals is odd.”

Michaels explained how Sabalenka’s progression through to the quarters via walkover may have done her more harm than good.

“I would say that for somebody whose goals are to win Roland Garros and extend her lead as the best player in the world, I think she might have preferred a match instead of that walkover,” he said.

Former Olympic Gold medalist Monica Puig agreed, giving insight into how Sabalenka will have felt this week.

“She just wants to get out there and play,” said Puig.

“She is the Tiger. She is not this type of player who is like yes, okay, great, I can have a day to rest.

“She is not the type of player who shies away from the competition; she wants it and lives it.

“Her best self is when she is in these moments, so for her to be waiting is probably making her antsy, but she has such a great relationship with her team.

“I think off the court things are going really well for her.

“Mentally, she seems to be in a great place, so I can only assume that everybody is just trying to keep her calm and be like you’re going to get out their eventually, so keep her calm, keep working, and do what we have to do.”

Puig reflected on Sabalenka’s progression on clay courts over recent years and how further match experience will see her continue to improve.

“Last season [Sabalenka] was really showing some great signs of playing really well on the clay,” she said.

“I feel like the clay in Madrid, for example, Rome is a little slower, but Madrid and the French Open they are faster courts, I feel like the ball zips through the air really quickly.

“So it’s all in her favour to have success in the clay season.”

Who is joining Aryna Sabalenka in the Stuttgart quarterfinals?

The field in Stuttgart has been whittled down from 28 to eight since the tournament began five days ago.

Sabalenka will be joined in the quarterfinals by four top-ten players, including clay-court specialist and world number two, Iga Swiatek.

Top half of the draw

Bottom half of the draw

Swiatek beat Jana Fett in her Stuttgart opener, 6-2, 6-2, as she now prepares for a tough test against one of her biggest WTA rivals.

The five-time Major champion will play Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals, whom she trails in the head-to-head 0-5.

If Swiatek can finally secure her first-ever victory over Ostapenko, she’ll no doubt look ahead to a potential 13th career meeting with Sabalenka in the final.

Sabalenka will play Mertens, and Swiatek will take on Ostapenko in the Stuttgart quarterfinals on Saturday, April 19.

Cases of candy recalled in 8 states, including New York

0

A Brooklyn company has recalled candy sold in eight states due to the presence of undeclared color additives, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall, initiated by Blooming Import Inc., affects 74 cases of 10-ounce, wrapped Golden Crop Candy, which is made with the dyes Blue 1, Red 40, Acid Red 18, which were not listed on the product label.

Reactions to color additives are uncommon, yet the FDA requires them all to be clearly listed on product labels.

If the products aren’t labeled properly, it violates FDA labeling requirements. It may present a risk to those who have sensitivity to the ingredients, the FDA said.

The candy was distributed in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Delaware and Texas. The affected product has the UPC 73476513450. The recall number is: F-0716-2025.

The recall is classified as Class II, meaning the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, though the probability of serious harm is remote.

A color additive is any substance that colors a food, drug, or cosmetic, and may be also used in food to enhance natural colors or help identify flavors.

Color additives have faced increased scrutiny since the FDA banned Red Dye No. 3, citing concerns over its links to cancer. California also moved to ban several dyes last year, with other states expected to follow suit, according to Newsweek.

“Color additives are safe when used properly,‘’ Dr. Linda Katz, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors, told Newsweek. ”There is no such thing as absolute safety of any substance. In the case of a new color additive, the FDA determines if there is ‘a reasonable certainty of no harm’ under the color additive’s proposed conditions of use.”

Those who believe they’ve experienced an adverse reaction to a color additive should report the reaction to their local FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator, the agency advised.

Grizzlies beat Mavericks in NBA Play-In Tournament: Live updates and reaction

0

One of the most disastrous seasons in the Mavericks’ 45-year history is over.

Dallas entered the season with championship hopes but has missed the playoffs entirely. Three days after general manager Nico Harrison repeatedly said “defense wins championships” as his rationale for trading Luka Dončić, the Mavericks’ defense looked porous in a win-or-go-home game.

The Grizzlies scored 66 first-half points. Ja Morant, who was questionable after landing awkwardly on his right ankle Tuesday, lived in the lane early on. Morant scored 22 points and handed out nine assists.

The Mavericks were able to beat up the Sacramento Kings inside Wednesday. On Friday, it was a different story against a bigger Grizzlies team. Memphis, which starts Jaren Jackson Jr. and Zach Edey in its frontcourt, outscored Dallas 60-44 in points in the paint.

The Mavericks trailed by as many as 25 points. They cut the Grizzlies’ lead to seven points in the third quarter, but that was as close as they got to threatening.

Anthony Davis appeared to be in discomfort for most of the game, but he still scored 40 points. He didn’t get much help on offense from his teammates. P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II both went scoreless.

The Mavericks were 19-10 with the NBA’s No. 4 offense and No. 11 defense going into their Christmas game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Then, Dončić strained his left calf, and everything changed for Dallas, which has a long offseason ahead of it.

Catching Tandem of Carson Kelly, Miguel Amaya Set Tone For Chicago Cubs – Cubs

0

During my glorious days playing right field for my middle-school baseball team, I looked on in envy as my teammate at the catcher position strapped on his armor, set to take his place at one of the most imperative spots on the field. Along with the rest of our squad, he stayed locked in, making effortless throws from home to second base, en route to a tournament championship. Alas, unlike what we’re seeing here on the North Side of Chicago, my team’s catcher didn’t have an elite partner to split up duties with. In one of the season’s most exciting early success stories, Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly are playing like the best catchers in Major League Baseball.

The catcher position for the 2023 and 2024 Cubs was a perpetual problem. They registered as almost a free out for the North Siders’ opponents, putting together at-bats unhealthier than a late-night drive-through stop at Portillo’s. In his last three seasons, Yan Gomes couldn’t scrape together better than a 2.0 WAR. In his one truncated season with the Cubs, Tomas Nido clocked in with a -0.5 WAR. Nido was an emergency attempt to replace Gomes, just a year after calling up Amaya was an emergency measure to replace spiraling veteran Tucker Barnhart. Now, in the case of Amaya, his former mechanics prevented him from realizing the potential in his bat for quite a while. He’s a completely different ballplayer now, in all the best ways.

The longer you hang around in the majors, the higher the likelihood you’ll be granted the opportunity to figure the game out. Amaya seems to be doing that. Not only is his defense strong, but Amaya’s quieted swing has become a perfectly solid hitter for his position, with upside from there. Considering his placement in the lower third of Craig Counsell’s batting order, his .770 OPS makes Amaya a hidden gem within the Cubs’ lineup. Beyond his full offensive 180°, Amaya is one of several galvanizing clubhouse guys, keeping the vibes strong. At 26 years of age, approaching the prime of his career, he couldn’t be coming around at a better time.

I don’t have time to cycle through all the reasons why Carson Kelly is a sensational catcher for the Chicago Cubs. No one stays this hot, and maybe the injury he sustained when he was hit by a pitch this weekend will be the thing to cool him off, but his OPS of 1.636 almost seems like a dream. He’s positioned himself as one of the more confident Cubs on the field, a self-possessed veteran and Chicagoland native who is finally in a place that makes sense to him. Much has been made of this club’s offensive heft, as it leads the league in most categories, but Kelly’s defense has stood out, too. He’s been a good pitch framer and blocker, and his wonderfully accurate arm has already showed up in game action. Amaya has improved at controlling the running game, too, so perhaps the veteran is also helping his teammates get better.

The Cubs, like every other team in the league, fix their sights on playoff baseball. With the tandem of Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya, that vision is much closer to realization. There’s no regular follower of this squad who will list catching as a strength for recent iterations of this franchise—not since, tellingly, 2017 or so. Almost instantly, one of the team’s biggest liabilities has become one of its biggest assets. Digging in between the white chalk squares that make the batter’s boxes, the Cubs’ catching duo is ready to make their club the envy of the big leagues.

Sen. John Cornyn calls for DOJ probe into EPIC City development,

0

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also requested documents from local officials on the proposed development in Collin County.

COLLIN COUNTY, Texas — Sen. John Cornyn Monday called on the Department of Justice to investigate a proposed Muslim-centric community in Collin County, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he’s expanding his investigation into the project.

Paxton said Monday he’s expanding his investigation into the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) development proposed in an unincorporated part of Collin County and asked for documents from local officials regarding the development. Specifically, Paxton requested documents from officials in Plano, Richardson, Wylie and Josephine after “an individual involved with EPIC City” claimed “to have support from local officials,” according to a press release.

EPIC recently bought just over 400 acres of property north of Josephine near the intersections of County Roads 850 and 695 for the proposed development that includes more than 1,000 homes, a school, retail areas, parks and more centered around a mosque.

The proposed development quickly drew the ire of state officials, with Gov. Greg Abbott announcing last month that a dozen state agencies were investigating “potential illegal activities conducted by EPIC and its affiliated entities.”

“If any local official is supporting or communicating with a real estate development that is under investigation for potential violations of state law, then it’s imperative that we are made aware of exactly what’s being communicated,” Paxton said in a statement. “We will thoroughly review these documents as part of our ongoing investigation into EPIC City and work to hold accountable anyone who breaks Texas law.”

“I write to recommend the Department of Justice open a civil rights investigation into whether a potential planned community in Texas would violate federal law,” Cornyn wrote in his letter. “Specifically, I am concerned that a master-planned ‘community of thousands of Muslims’ could violate the constitutional rights of Jewish and Christian Texans, by preventing them from living in this new community and discriminating against them within the community.”

Shortly after Cornyn’s request was made public, the Council on American-Islamic Relations sent its own letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, calling on the DOJ to reject Cornyn’s request.

“Senator Cornyn’s request is not only factually baseless. It weaponizes tired Islamophobic tropes to portray a peaceful, inclusive development project as suspicious simply because it is Muslim-led,” CAIR Government Affairs Department Director Robert S. McCaw said in a statement. “Rather than targeting Muslim charities working to build family-centered communities, the Department of Justice should investigate Texas officials who appear to be violating the Constitution by singling out Muslims for political gain.”

Community Capital Partners, which has been in communication with local and regional community leaders to discuss plans and take input on the EPIC City development, said it’s “disheartened that our project has become fodder for pandering and political theater.”

“The consistent attacks and unwarranted investigations speak volumes about the state of politics and have little to do with our project, or our vision. We look forward to correcting the misinformation about EPIC City, and we will continue to work to create a diverse, safe and inclusive community — one in which everyone is welcome and people of every background, faith, and culture can live together in harmony,” Community Capital Partners said in a statement.

Cornyn and Paxton’s requests come after the developers behind EPIC City retained lawyer Dan Cogdell earlier this month to represent them amid the investigations. Codgell said, “this project is simply the victim of racial profiling.”

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) earlier this month sent a letter to representatives of the developers behind EPIC City informing them they didn’t have the permits necessary to begin construction despite the developers acknowledging earlier this month that the project is in the planning phases, applications haven’t been filed and construction hasn’t started.

Collin County residents also packed a recent county meeting, with many voicing their opposition to the project.

Shellshocked Rajat Patidar fumes at Virat Kohli and co. as PBKS humiliate RCB: ‘Partnerships are important in batting’

0

It was a rain-derailed match which saw the RCB vs PBKS IPL 2025 showdown get reduced to 14 overs in each innings, on Friday. Eventually when the toss took place in Bengaluru, Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl. RCB had a disastrous batting collapse right from the start, losing opener Phil Salt (4) in the fourth delivery of the opening over.

With the arrival of skipper Rajat Patidar, it looked like a partnership with Virat Kohli would settle the tempo for RCB. But Arshdeep Singh struck again in the third over to remove Kohli (1) as RCB fell to 21/2 in 2.4 overs. Patidar failed to find any partnerships during his knock, and he too eventually lost his wicket in the eighth over, for 23 off 18 balls. Tim David (50*) remained unbeaten as RCB reached 95/9 in 14 overs.

Rajat Patidar fumes at Virat Kohli and Co.

Chasing 96 runs, PBKS eased to 98/5 in 12.1 overs, winning by five wickets. Speaking in the post-match ceremony, Patidar was left fuming at his side’s batting order and blamed them for the defeat.

Only Patidar and David got double-digit scores, as Salt, Kohli, Liam Livingstone (4), Jitesh Sharma (2), Krunal Pandya (1), Manoj Bhandage (1), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (8), Yash Dayal (0) were dismissed in single digits.

“Initially it was sticking, and was two-paced. But I think we could have done far better as a batting unit. Partnerships are important in batting. We have been losing wickets in intervals,” said Patidar, as he looked totally shellshocked with the manner of the defeat.

For PBKS in the run-chase, Nehal Wadhera was in hot form as he remained unbeaten with a knock of 33* runs off 19 balls and also hit the match-winning six. After the defeat, RCB are fourth in the IPL 2025 points table with four wins and three losses. Meanwhile, PBKS are second, with five victories and two defeats.

Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood, in particular, will be disappointed with the defeat, as his bowling almost brought RCB back into the game. In three overs, he took three wickets and conceded 14 runs.
