Barcelona coach Hansi Flick rails at ‘unbelievable’ LaLiga schedule

0

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised his team’s resilience with the club still competing on three fronts this season but complained about the timing of their next LaLiga match against Celta Vigo as he wanted to give his players some more rest.

League leaders Barça advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League after defeating Borussia Dortmund on aggregate while they also face Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final later this month.

With a four-point lead over Madrid, Barça can steal a march on the title when they play Celta Vigo on Saturday but Flick questioned the league for not scheduling the game later in the day instead of an early kickoff.

Flick said players need more time to rest as they arrive back in Barcelona very late from away games in Europe and do not get into bed until 5 a.m.

“Every league protects their clubs, especially when they play in the semifinals of the Champions League. It’s unbelievable, we have no time to rest,” Flick told reporters on Friday.

“For me, the guys responsible for that — I want to discuss it with them … I don’t want to make excuses or complain. I’m happy we’re not playing on Sunday at 2 p.m against Valladolid.

“But why can’t we play at 6 p.m like we normally do? Give me one reason. To me, it’s a joke and it affects Spanish football. The rest of the teams in the European leagues benefit.

“I’m speechless because this situation is unbelievable. In the Bundesliga or Premier League, they take care of their clubs … They [LaLiga] have no idea what this [arriving late] means for the players.”

Celta Vigo are seventh in the standings, chasing European football, and Flick praised their 37-year-old coach Claudio Giráldez who came in this season and lifted a club that finished the last three campaigns in the bottom half.

“I have the highest respect for his work, he’s coached a great team … it has nothing to do with his age,” Flick said.

“Celta have a clear idea of how they want to play, they’re very brave in their build-up.

“For us it’s important we show our strengths, maybe what we missed in Dortmund. We spoke about the situations we had in Dortmund and we have to do better tomorrow … We have to play at our highest level. Also, they like their away matches.”

FC Barcelona statement

0

FC Barcelona has already this season expressed its disagreement with the criteria set out by the Spanish Football League (LFP) and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) with regards to dates and kick off times for the first team.

We consider, as expressed on Friday by our coach to whom we give our total support and with whom we are in complete agreement, that governing bodies of Spanish Football should be more considerate with teams, such as ours, who are taking part in all three competitions in the final part of the season. This is not a new problem, and without making light of the difficulty of organised a fixture list with so many matches, FC Barcelona will continue to defend its interests in front of the national and international organising bodies of football so that the sporting calendar makes more sense. As such, FC Barcelona will make a form complaint to the regulatory bodies of football with the aim of avoiding situations that may be to the detriment of the real stars in the world of football, the players.

Alexander Zverev asks for Munich Open spectator to be removed over heckling

0

Alexander Zverev asked for a spectator who heckled him over domestic abuse allegations to be kicked out of his Munich Open quarter-final.

The German number one seed was serving at 5-5 in the second set against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor when the fan shouted: “Let’s go, you wifebeater.”

Zverev spoke to chair umpire Fergus Murphy and could be heard saying “Fergus, please kick him out”.

It is not clear if the spectator was ejected from the stadium.

In January, Zverev was heckled by a spectator during the Australian Open men’s singles trophy ceremony.

As he stepped up to receive his runners-up trophy, a spectator loudly shouted: “Australia believes Olya and Brenda.”

The 27-year-old was accused of violence by his former girlfriend Olya Sharypova in 2020 and of domestic abuse in 2023 by Brenda Patea, with whom he has a child.

Zverev has repeatedly denied both sets of allegations and a Berlin court case brought by Patea was discontinued last year.

Zverev won the match on Friday against Griekspoor 6-7(6) 7-6(3) 6-4. He will face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the semi-final on Saturday.

Alexander Zverev asks umpire to eject heckler at Munich Open

0

Alexander Zverev was heckled by a spectator during Friday’s Munich Open quarterfinal, and the top seed asked the chair umpire to eject the individual, who alluded to domestic abuse allegations against the German.

Zverev, playing Tallon Griekspoor, was heckled while serving at 5-5 in the second set when the supporter yelled: “Let’s go, you … wife-beater!”

Zverev did not react at first, composing himself while several other spectators jeered the heckler.

Zverev won the game but during the changeover he spoke to chair umpire Fergus Murphy.

“Fergus, please kick him out,” Zverev said.

It was unclear if the fan was ejected. Reuters has contacted tournament organizers for comment.

Zverev was also heckled before making his speech as the runner-up at the Australian Open in January.

In June last year, Zverev’s lawyers said he had agreed to a settlement after the mother of his child, Brenda Patea, accused him of physical abuse and a German court closed the case.

Zverev has repeatedly denied the allegations.

He beat Griekspoor 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4 in a match lasting over three hours, avenging his loss to the Dutchman at Indian Wells last month.

“I don’t even care if it was a roller-coaster ride, I won.” Zverev said.

“The crowd carried me to victory. I was already mentally exhausted, but they cheered me on in the decisive phase.”

Zverev will face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the semifinals.

Thunder Notes: Hartenstein, Holmgren, Dort, SGA, Williams

0

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault didn’t get to use his twin tower lineup as much as he expected this season, but he’s seen enough to have confidence in it heading into the playoffs, writes Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

After getting pounded on the boards in a second-round series loss to Dallas last year, Oklahoma City made finding another big man an offseason priority. The club was able to land Isaiah Hartenstein on a three-year, $87MM contract in free agency and planned to team him with Chet Holmgren to form a combination that could match up with the more physical teams in the West.

However, Hartenstein broke his left hand during the preseason and didn’t play his first game with OKC until November 20. By that time, Holmgren had suffered a fractured hip that kept him sidelined until early February. They were active on the same night only 20 times this season and logged 316 minutes together. It’s a small sample, but Daigneault liked how they looked.

“It would be more uncomfortable if it was like really stalling,” he said. “If it wasn’t getting off the ground or if it was low-impact or if it was clunky, then that’s a harder decision of (how much to use it). But it was good right away in unpredictable ways.”

The combination was effective on both ends of the court — Slater notes that the Thunder posted a 122.9 offensive rating and 109.4 defensive rating when they played together and outscored their opponents by 96 points. Their next challenge will be a matchup with 7’4″ rookie Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. in a first-round series against Memphis.

“The offensive flow that we’ve been able to maintain with two seven-footers on the floor (is key),” Daigneault said. “It’s something that always concerns you when you go super big. But I think it speaks to how skilled those guys are. They’re both in their own way very dynamic.”

There’s more from Oklahoma City:

  • In an interview with Marc J. Spears of AndscapeLuguentz Dort talked about his chances of earning Defensive Player of the Year honors. Dort admits that defensive excellence can be difficult to quantify, but he hopes voters take the Thunder’s 68-win season into consideration. “This is just not numbers,” he said. “You got to be able to watch the games and see exactly what the players are doing on the court. I don’t think I have the most steals or the most blocks or whatever. But I know that every time I have a matchup, my matchup is in hell. So, it is hard to (define) because if you just go based on the numbers, I probably won’t be in a conversation. But if you watch the (other) games and watch our games the whole season, you could see that I take a lot of pride (in defense).”
  • Playoff inexperience is the major question facing the Thunder after a dominant regular season, notes Mark Medina of Athlon Sports. Players don’t believe that will be an issue, and they’re taking inspiration from last year’s early exit. “We have a ‘whatever it takes’ mentality,” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said. “The goal is to win. However you get it done, it’s a step in the right direction. It’s going to look ugly at times. It’s going to look pretty at times. We want to be a team that gets it done, regardless.”
  • The playoffs present an opportunity for Jalen Williams to earn more national recognition, per Rylan Stiles of Sports Illustrated. Williams has only been in 10 postseason games, but he’ll be counted on to help Gilgeous-Alexander carry the scoring load.

Veterans Will Bolster OKC Thunder During NBA Playoffs

0

After winning 68 games during the regular season, the Oklahoma City Thunder are a popular pick to win the Western Conference.

It was a dominating season from start to finish for Oklahoma City. The Thunder now turn its sights to the NBA Playoffs.

The Bricktown ballers are still awaiting its first round matchup, which will be decided tonight as the Dallas Mavericks take on the Memphis Grizzlies for the right to the No. 8 seed.

This is the second ever playoff run for this core of Thunder players, but this past summer Oklahoma City went out to bolster its roster with the signing of seven-footer Isaiah Hartenstein and swinging a trade for defensive ace Alex Caruso.

Each of them come with their own experience. Hartenstein has logged 26 career playoff games. Caruso has 31 such tilts including an NBA Championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

They join a squad that was ousted in the second round a year ago in six games to the Dallas Mavericks and hope to get the Thunder over the hump.

This week at practice, Mark Daigneault discussed these two veterans as the playoffs loom.

“Those guys have a mature approach. They understand the big picture. They understand how to prepare and how to keep themselves emotionally regulated through the ups and downs of a playoff run.”

Hartenstein’s presence will be not only in the Thunder’s front court depth compared to a year ago, but his physicality which is a requirement in the postseason.

On top of Caruso’s elite level defense, and the ability to defend every position on the floor, but since the All-Star Break the NBA Champion is shooting 40% from beyond the arc. His steady leadership will help a young core achieve its goals.

While the Thunder were the No. 1 seed last season, things are much different than they were. Not only did OKC lap the field in the standings this year, rather than earning the honor via a tiebreaker, but the Thunder’s rotation is vastly different.

Instead of the likes of Josh Giddey and Gordon Hayward, the Thunder will deploy Caruso and Hartenstein and it should lead to success.

Russia declares unilateral Easter truce; Ukraine says attacks are ongoing | Russia-Ukraine war News

0

President Vladimir Putin has announced an unexpected and brief unilateral Easter truce in Russia’s war on Ukraine while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists that Russian “assault operations” and “artillery fire are ongoing”.

Zelenskyy initially called the announcement on Saturday “another attempt by Putin to play with human lives. … Air raid alerts are spreading across Ukraine,” and “Shahed drones in our skies reveal Putin’s true attitude toward Easter and toward human life.”

The Ukrainian leader said later on X that his country would abide by a truce “if Russia is now suddenly ready to truly engage in a format of full and unconditional silence” and suggested extending a ceasefire.

In his surprise move, Putin said in televised comments while speaking to the Russian military’s chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov: “Today from 18:00 [15:00 GMT] to midnight Sunday [21:00 GMT on Sunday], the Russian side announces an Easter truce.” He added that the truce is based on “humanitarian considerations”.

Putin said he assumed Ukraine would follow Russia’s example and said Kyiv’s actions during the ceasefire would show its readiness for a peaceful settlement.

But the Russian president also told Gerasimov to ready troops to repel any violations of the truce by Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defence posted on Telegram: “The ceasefire regime is being introduced for humanitarian purposes and will be observed by the Russian Joint Group of Troops, provided that it is mutually observed by the Kyiv regime”.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha countered that Putin’s word “cannot be trusted and we will look at actions, not words”.

Sybiha added that Ukraine had “agreed unconditionally to the U.S. proposal of a full interim ceasefire for 30 days” in March, which Russia rejected. “Putin has now made statements about his alleged readiness for a ceasefire. 30 hours instead of 30 days,” Sybiha continued on X.

Previous attempts at holding ceasefires for Easter in April 2022 and Orthodox Christmas in January 2023 were not implemented after both sides failed to agree on them.

Reporting from Moscow, Al Jazeera’s Yulia Shapovalova said this would be the first time Russia has suspended fire since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

“No doubt this decision would be positively received here and around the world. This move certainly gives hope to a lot of people, and the timing is also right as the Christian world is celebrating Easter these days,” she said.

Putin’s announcement came a day after United States President Donald Trump said Washington will “take a pass” on trying to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war if either Moscow or Kyiv makes it too difficult to end it.

Last month, Putin agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure targets in Ukraine for 30 days after a phone call with Trump but stopped short of accepting a broader US-backed 30-day ceasefire proposal that Ukraine has said it is ready to implement.

According to Russian media reports, Putin on Saturday accused Ukraine of violating the truce on attacks on energy infrastructure more than 100 times but said the situation on the front lines has been favourable to Russia so far. Ukraine has also cited numerous violations by Russia in recent weeks.

Putin said Moscow “has always been ready for negotiations” and welcomed the US, Chinese and other countries’ efforts to ensure a fair settlement on Ukraine.

‘Russia saying one thing and doing another’

Hanna Shelest, security programmes director at the think tank Ukrainian Prism, told Al Jazeera that Putin’s latest truce announcement has to do with Trump’s comments on Friday.

“For the Kremlin, the current US administration … is much more open to the demands of Moscow and more open than European partners,” she said.

“So they [Kremlin officials] feel they can manipulate the White House much more than Berlin or London or Paris,” she added.

Reporting from Kyiv, Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi said people in Ukraine are looking at Putin’s announcement cynically.

“Ukrainians will tell you that they agreed to a ceasefire more than 30 days ago and that Russia did not. Based on the responses we’ve seen from … MPs, civil and military officials and bloggers, everyone here feels this is simply a way for Vladimir Putin to carry out a publicity stunt and buy some time with the White House,” he said.

“Ukrainians feel this is another example of Russia saying one thing and doing another,” he added.

Russia launched eight missiles and 87 drones in an overnight attack on Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said on Saturday.

Air defence units shot down 33 Russian drones, and another 36 drones were redirected by electronic warfare, the Ukrainian air force added. It gave no details on the missiles. Damage was recorded in five regions in the south, northeast and east, it said.

Shelest noted that usually a ceasefire would be accepted very positively in Ukraine, but it is important to see the reality play out on the front lines.

“Ukraine is ready and will try to have it [a ceasefire], but Ukraine has to be on high alert because previous experiences have demonstrated we cannot relax,” she said.

Prisoner swap

In the meantime, the Russian Defence Ministry said Russia and Ukraine on Saturday conducted a swap of 246 prisoners each that was mediated by the United Arab Emirates.

Zelenskyy said 277 Ukrainian service personnel had returned home from Russian captivity in the latest swap.

The Russian former prisoners of war are in Belarus, where they were being provided with medical and psychological care, the ministry said.

Zelenskyy thanked the UAE for mediating the exchange. He said a total of 4,552 Ukrainians – service personnel and civilians – had been returned since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
