Davante Adams Says the 49ers Lowballed him in Free Agency

0

If the 49ers really wanted Davante Adams, it seems like they could have had him this offseason.

Adams was a free agent and he’s from the Bay Area — he went to Palo Alto High School. And he recently told The Athletic’s Mike Silver that his agent and the 49ers had discussions about Adams coming home and joining the 49ers.

“I was entertaining the Niners,” Adams said, “but they were like, ‘We’re paying wholesale. We ain’t paying retail.’ I didn’t talk to them, but that’s what my agent told me — like five times, that quote. And I was like, ‘OK, well, I’m not a wholesale-type dude.'”

Adams eventually signed a two-year, $44 million contract with the Rams who aren’t afraid to pail retail, apparently.

Meanwhile, the 49ers signed the Rams’ No. 3 receiver from last year, Demarcus Robinson, who likely will be suspended for the first few games of 2025, to a two-year, $8 million deal. There’s your wholesale wide receiver.

I guess you get what you pay for.

In retrospect, there was no chance the 49ers would land Adams. They’re simply not spending big money on anyone but their own players this offseason. They shouldn’t even have wasted his time. They’re not seriously trying to contend for a Super Bowl this year. They know their window is closed and they’re trying to position themselves for contention in 2026.

Look for the 49ers to draft a wide receiver in the first few rounds of this week’s draft. They’ve drafted at least one wide receiver every year except one since Kyle Shanahan became the head coach in 2017.

River safety precautions as water levels rise

0

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -As the weather warms, snowpack melts and the river levels rise. Mesa County Search and Rescue urges residents to stay safe on the river.

According to Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, the search and rescue team received 17 calls for help in 2024. One person also drowned in the river.

Search and rescue said before rafting, kayaking or paddling on the river, ensure you’re wearing proper gear. Those participating in a river activity must wear a life jacket, or a portable flotation device that’s made for moving water.

“The next few weeks, we’ll see the river go up as the snow melt starts pouring in and we see high water season. That’s the riskiest time in the water. When it warms up and people start drinking, consuming drugs and floating on the river…That’s when we get the most number of calls,” said Jesse Goryl, swift water technician for Mesa County Search and Rescue.

Goryl adds that paddleboarders should avoid using a leash that connects you to the device. If a leash is necessary, make sure it’s quick release.

Swift water classes are available at several places in Grand Junction.

NJ to grant emergency Real ID appointments starting Thursday

0

2-minute read

play

Travelers with life-or-death emergencies and those who have urgent travel plans within 14 days can schedule a Real ID appointment starting on Thursday, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission announced.

The Real ID emergency issuance program comes as the May 7 enforcement deadline for Real ID approaches and many are still struggling to make an appointment. Those in New Jersey will need a Real ID if they use their license as a form of identification for air travel airports.

A limited number of people who meet all of the qualifications listed by the MVC will be allowed into the program. Those who have an acceptable form of identification to clear Transportation Security Administration checkpoints will not be permitted to make an appointment.

It is required that you confirm you do not have a passport (up to one year expired from travel date) or any other acceptable form of identification when applying for the Real ID emergency program.

All appointments will be held at the MVC Regional Center in Trenton. The emergency program will not be found on the regular scheduling platform. The program portal will open on Thursday, April 24.

An $80 shipping fee must be paid. The shipping fee “will be assessed to expedite the delivery of a REAL ID within a few business days,” the commission said.

The necessary combination of documents, known as 2 + 1 + 6 = Real ID, must be brought to the emergency appointment. Required documents include two proofs of residential address, one verifiable Social Security number and documents that add up to six Real ID points.

Those with a life-threatening illness or injury, and those who have an immediate family member who has died, is dying in hospice care or has a life-threatening illness or injury, can qualify for the emergency program if they need to travel domestically within 14 days from Thursday.

A parent, legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling or grandparent would qualify as an immediate family member. The MVC said aunts, uncles, cousins or other relatives are not included.

Travelers must also submit documentation attesting to their personal situation and will need to bring those documents to their appointment.

The required documentation for a family emergency can include:

  • Death certificate.
  • Statement from a mortuary.
  • Letter from a hospital. The letter must be on hospital letterhead, signed by a doctor and explaining the life-threatening medical condition. If not in English, the letter should be translated by a professional translator.

The travelers must also confirm how they are flying to another state within the next 14 days, which can include:

  • Airline ticket.
  • Travel itinerary with proof of payment.
  • Invoice with travel dates and proof of payment.

If a traveler is applying for the emergency appointment under urgent travel, the same proof of travel is also required.

The issuing of Real ID started in September 2019, but numerous delays from the COVID-19 pandemic onward pushed the deadline back until May of this year.

No one is required to get a Real ID, and a standard driver’s license or non-driver identification card can still be used to drive in New Jersey.

Todays NYT Strands puzzle might be tricky. It’s an odd topic, and the answers are all over the map. If you need hints and answers, read on.

I go into depth about the rules for Strands in this story.

Hint for today’s Strands puzzle

Today’s Strands theme is: What talent!

If that doesn’t help you, here’s a clue: All kinds of skills.

Clue words to unlock in-game hints

Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the puzzle’s theme. If you’re stuck, find any words you can. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. These are the words I used to get those hints, but any words of four or more letters that you find will work:

  • CRIT, GRIM, RAVE, MAGE, COCA, TARA, GLUE, DANCE, MOIRE, SCAT, GATE, STAR, RATS, ROAN

Answers for today’s Strands puzzle

These are the answers that tie into the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you’ve got all of them (I originally thought there were always eight but learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

  • DUET, COMIC, DANCER, ACROBAT, JUGGLER, MAGICIAN

Today’s Strands spangram

NYT/Screenshot by CNET

Today’s Strands spangram is VARIETYACTS. To find it, start with the V that’s four letters from the left in the bottom row, and wind up.

Quick tips for Strands

#1: To get more clue words, see if you can tweak the words you’ve already found, by adding an “S” or other variants. And if you find a word like WILL, see if other letters are close enough to help you make SILL, or BILL.

#2: Once you get one theme word, look at the puzzle to see if you can spot other related words.

#3: If you’ve been given the letters for a theme word, but can’t figure it out, guess three more clue words, and the puzzle will light up each letter in order, revealing the word.

Columbia student suspended over interview cheating tool raises $5.3M to ‘cheat on everything’

0

On Sunday, 21-year-old Chungin “Roy” Lee announced he’s raised $5.3 million in seed funding from Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures for his startup, Cluely, that offers an AI tool to “cheat on everything.”

The startup was born after Lee posted in a viral X thread that he was suspended by Columbia University after he and his co-founder developed a tool to cheat on job interviews for software engineers.

That tool, originally called Interview Coder, is now part of their San Francisco-based startup Cluely. It offers its users the chance to “cheat” on things like exams, sales calls, and job interviews thanks to a hidden in-browser window that can’t be viewed by the interviewer or test giver.

Cluely has published a manifesto comparing itself to inventions like the calculator and spellcheck, which were originally derided as “cheating.”

Cluely also published a slickly produced, but polarizing, launch video of Lee using a hidden AI assistant to (unsuccessfully) lie to a woman about his age, and even his knowledge of art, on a date at a fancy restaurant:

While some praised the video for grabbing people’s attention, others derided it as reminiscent of the dystopian sci-fi television show “Black Mirror”:

Lee, who is Cluely’s CEO, told TechCrunch the AI cheating tool surpassed $3 million in ARR earlier this month.

The startup’s other co-founder is another 21-year-old former Columbia student, Neel Shanmugam, who is Cluely’s COO. Shanmugam was also embroiled in disciplinary proceedings at Columbia over the AI tool. Both co-founders have dropped out of Columbia, the university’s student newspaper reported last week. Columbia declined to comment, citing student privacy laws.

Cluely began as a tool for developers to cheat on knowledge of LeetCode, a platform for coding questions that some in software engineering circles — including Cluely’s founders, of course — consider outdated and a waste of time.

Lee says he was able to snag an internship with Amazon using the AI cheating tool. Amazon declined to comment on Lee’s particular case to TechCrunch, but said its job candidates must acknowledge they won’t use unauthorized tools during the interview process.

Cluely isn’t the only controversial AI startup launched this month. Earlier, a famed AI researcher announced his own startup with the stated mission of replacing all human workers everywhere, causing a brouhaha of its own on X.

Dead & Company Welcome Renée Fleming for “Space” Vocal Improvisation, Debut Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come”

Over the weekend, Dead & Company returned to Las Vegas’ Sphere to set off the second frame of their three-tiered 2025 residency. After a year of outstanding stagings at the venue, the jam forerunners are still consistently upping the ante with new approaches, reverent historical homages and setlist surprises that more fully match Sphere’s immersive potential. The first three stagings of their new series were some of their most inventive yet; after presenting a residency debut of Kingfish’s “Supplication” and teasing the theme from The White Lotus on Thursday, April 17, the band’s performances on Friday and Saturday brought rare covers, a live debut and bold “Space” exploration with a very special guest.

Dead & Company kicked off their show on Friday night with a rollicking “Alabama Getaway,” which put the crowd in high spirits for an energetic and generally uplifting first set. The highlight of this sprint was undoubtedly the ensemble’s debut cover of Jimmy Cliff’s iconic 1972 reggae classic “The Harder They Come,” made famous for its inclusion in his celebrated music-crime film of the same name. Dead & Company’s first go at the standard, which was translated to their wheelhouse by its time in Jerry Garcia’s solo repertoire, was led by stirring vocals from bassist Oteil Burbridge.

After wrapping the first frame with a sweet treatment of Garcia’s “Sugaaree,” D&C shifted their tone for their second set with the traditional “Cold Rain and Snow,” followed by “Estimated Prophet,” “Eyes of the World” and “Row Jimmy.” Fans waited with bated breath as bandmates Bob Weir, John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti left the stage for a particularly tense “Drums,” charged with anticipation for acclaimed classical vocalist Renée Fleming, whose participation drummer Mickey Hart announced on Thursday. “I’ve been collaborating with Renée for decades,” Hart wrote on Facebook. “Often with my late beloved brother Zakir Hussain in the mix. Some of the best times of my life.”

As the final beats of “Drums” rang out, Burbridge and drummer Jay Lane left the stage to make way while Fleming walked on and took her place alongside Hart. While Hart conjured otherworldly tone poetry on The Beam, Fleming joined with her five-time Grammy and Kennedy Center Honors-awarded lyric soprano for trancelike vocal improvisation, wavering between bright outbursts of laughter, percussive consonance and soaring extended notes. At the conclusion of the unprecedented collaboration, the rest of the band re-emerged and moved fluidly into “Days Between,” then forged ahead to a touching cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and a finale of “Ripple.”

On Saturday, Dead & Company cooled down from two unforgettable evenings with a more mellow performance, which nonetheless treated attendees to some standout songs. After opening with a romp through “Dancing in the Streets” and the sauntering, bluesy groove of “Truckin’,” the group lit up their second-ever performance of Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally,” which they debuted at the second show of their Dead Forever 2025 residency on March 21. This classic Clapton cut, like “The Harder They Come,” found its way into the Grateful Dead universe through recurring spots in setlists from the Jerry Garcia Band. In Sunday’s second set, the group dug up one more cover from that corner of the canon with a warm and psychedelic run through The Beatles’ 1968 cut “Dear Prudence. Shortly afterwards, the sextet closed out their third weekend at Sphere of 2025 with the fitting “One More Saturday Night.”

Sony shows off the PS5 Pro’s liquid metal updates

0

We spent quite some time conducting research on insulation when we were designing the original PS5. The basic structure remains the same in the PS5 Pro, but we made some improvements by adding fine grooves where the liquid metal is applied, so that the cooling effect is more stable. When we were doing research for the original PS5, we anticipated that semiconductors would continue to advance and become much denser, so we believed liquid metal technology would become crucial. It turns out we were right, and it was integral when designing the PS5 Pro.

Eagles make Cam Jurgens among highest paid NFL centers with big contract

0

The Eagles are signing center Cam Jurgens to a four-year contract extension, reportedly worth as much as $68 million, making him the second-highest paid center in the NFL in average annual value.

Jurgens, the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2022, is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The extension, which runs through the 2029 season, was expected after Jurgens was selected to the Pro Bowl in his first season as Jason Kelce’s replacement at center.

Only the Chiefs’ Creed Humphrey, at $18 million, makes more than Jurgens’ $17 million in average annual value.

Jurgens becomes the fourth Eagles offensive linemen to sign an extension in the past calendar year, joining left tackle Jordan Mailata (3 years, $66 million), left guard Landon Dickerson (4 years, $84 million) and right tackle Lane Johnson ($1 year, $25 million).

That means four of the Eagles’ five offensive linemen, considered among the best line in the NFL, are signed through at least the 2027 season.

Jurgens was drafted with the idea that he would eventually succeed Kelce, who was selected to seven Pro Bowls and six All Pro teams. But Jurgens didn’t actually get his chance until last season. As a rookie, Jurgens backed up Kelce. In 2023, Jurgens moved to right guard and started every game there.

Then in March 2024, Kelce announced his retirement, paving the way for Jurgens to take over.

At the Super Bowl, Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland said Jurgens had the best way to develop into a Pro Bowl center − first by sitting behind Kelce, then by playing next to him.

“I don’t know if any of this would have happened for him had he not played the right guard spot, and had a chance to be next to one of the greatest centers who ever played,” Stoutland said. “So to have a chance to be next to that, in the meeting rooms sitting next to him − I made sure of that. So to be able to go through this every day, an entire season of here’s how you conduct yourself, here’s how the calls are supposed to be made. He was acclimated to that. I think all of it helped him.”

It also helped Jurgens become one of the highest-paid centers.

The Eagles have until May 1 to decide whether to pick up the fifth-year option for defensive tackle Jordan Davis, who was chosen in the first round in 2022. If the Eagles do, Davis will make about $13 million in 2026. If not, Davis will become a free agent after this season.

The fifth-year option only exists for first-round draftees.
