CZ Shadow 2 Carry geared for everyday carry

0

The
CZ Shadow 2 Carry features an innovative optics-ready interface that allows you
to mount red dot sights directly on the slide without any mounting plates.

It must remember that the Shadow family still descends from the legendary CZ 75 pistol of the 1970s, one of the original and most influential “wonder nines”. This means that we have a double-action trigger-mechanism and excellent ergonomics – the grip angle and shape, in particular, that allow for excellent shooting comfort. The new Shadow 2 Carry refines that concept and takes it a step further, also thanks to a smooth and crisp trigger combined with easily accessible, holster-friendly controls. Still in terms of comfort, CZ has also given the “Carry” an enlarged and easier-to-grip slide stop. With an empty magazine, the compact 4” pistol weighs around 900 g. Its dimensions (LxWxH) are 191 mm x 35 mm x 138 mm.

A carry gun must be not only comfortable, but also safe: CZ stresses the safety features of the Shadow 2 Carry, that include a decocker, a safety notch on the hammer, and an automatic firing pin block. Magazine provides a reassuring 15-round capacity, enough for any defense scenario.

And what about optics readiness? In the CZ Shadow 2 Carry you can mount red dots directly on the slide without any mounting plates, so that the standard fixed sights are retained as backup and co-witness with your reflex sight. Moreover, thanks to this system, the optic also “sits” closer to the barrel axis, for better accuracy and more instinctive aiming. Red dot sights with the Shield RMSc or Holosun K footprint can be easily fitted.

Barrel is cold-hammer forged and comes with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and loss of precision. The frame is machined from forged EN AW-T 7075 6 aluminum alloy for maximum durability and light weight.

These are the raw facts about the new CZ Shadow 2 Carry: all that is left to do now is testing it on the range as soon as possible – stay tuned on all4shooters.com for that!

Boeing (BA) Q1 2025 earnings

0

Boeing narrowed its losses in the first quarter and is preparing to raise monthly output of 737 Max jets, as CEO Kelly Ortberg said the planemaker could send some aircraft destined for China to other airlines amid the trade war.

Boeing is planning to seek Federal Aviation Administration approval later this year to increase production of the best-selling jets.

Boeing reported a first-quarter net loss of $31 million, improvement from a loss of $355 million a year earlier, as revenue rose 18% to $19.5 billion, slightly ahead of analysts’ estimates, and Boeing’s aircraft deliveries rose nearly 60%.

The company’s cash burn of about $2.3 billion was an improvement over the nearly $4 billion it used in the first quarter of 2024, and was better than analysts expected. Ortberg told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” that the company is on track to generate cash in the second half of the year.

Boeing shares rose 6% on Wednesday to $172.37.

The results include only the impact of global tariffs as of March 31, the company said. The manufacturer is currently caught in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump’s trade war, which is set to drive up prices of aircraft and imported parts and materials.

GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp said Tuesday that he’s met with Trump and suggested restoring duty-free trade for the aerospace industry, a major U.S. exporter that helps soften the United States’ trade deficit. GE, which makes aircraft engines, and RTX said they expect tariffs to cost more than $1 billion combined this year.

“While we are closely watching the developments in global trade, our strong start to the year combined with the demand for airplanes and our half trillion-dollar backlog for our products and services gives us the flexibility we need to navigate this environment,” Boeing CEO Ortberg said in a staff note Wednesday.

Ortberg said on an earnings call that demand remains strong for its aircraft and said the company’s backlog is worth more than $500 billion.

The company is planning to remarket some of its Boeing jets that were earmarked for Chinese airlines after that country stopped taking delivery of its aircraft due to the trade war with the U.S.

“We’re not going to continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them,” he said.

Here’s how Boeing performed compared with what Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG expected for the first quarter:

  • Loss per share: 49 cents adjusted vs. $1.29 loss expected
  • Revenue: $19.5 billion vs. $19.45 billion expected

On a per-share basis, the company reported a loss of 16 cents, compared with a loss of 56 cents during the same quarter a year earlier. Adjusting for one-time items related to pension costs and income taxes, among others, Boeing reported a loss of 49 cents per share.

Ortberg, who was hired last year and tasked with getting the manufacturer past a series of safety and manufacturing crises, outlined progress, including production rates of its bestselling 737 Max.

The CEO has in recent months touted improved safety and manufacturing processes at Boeing’s factories as he tries to guide the company past several accidents, including a door plug that blew out from a packed flight midair in January 2024 after the 737 Max left Boeing’s factory without key bolts installed. There were no fatalities or major injuries.

Last week, Boeing released results of an employee survey that showed only 27% would highly recommend working at Boeing and that 67% felt proud of working at Boeing, down from 91% in 2013. Less than half of employee respondents said they had confidence in senior leaders’ ability to “make decisions, communicate direction and respond to concerns raised by employees.”

Since the January 2024 accident, Boeing must receive approval from the FAA to increase output of the 737 Max to above 38 jets a month. Boeing had been producing significantly below that level after the accident and a nearly two-month union strike last year halted much of the company’s manufacturing.

Boeing said once it has stabilized its production rate at 38 per month, it will move up to 42, if it receives approval, and then increase it in five-per-month increments, up to about 52 a month, with about six months in between each hike.

Revenue in Boeing’s commercial airplane unit rose 75% during the first quarter from a year ago to $8.1 billion, with deliveries up to 130 planes from 83 a year ago.

“We are moving in the right direction and making progress as we reported our first-quarter 2025 results today,” Ortberg said in Wednesday’s staff memo. “From delivering more airplanes to scoring a transformational win for the fighter of the future, there is a lot of good work happening across our teams, and we are seeing positive results in the four key areas of our recovery plan that will position us for the rest of the year and beyond.”

Boeing has been refocusing its efforts on its core businesses. On Tuesday, it announced it would sell parts of its digital aviation businesses, including its Jeppesen navigation unit, to Thoma Bravo for $10.55 billion in an all-cash deal.

Revenue in its defense unit, which has been plagued with cost overruns and quality issues, fell 9% during the first quarter to $6.3 billion, though the company recently scored a major win after Trump awarded Boeing a contract to build the U.S. Air Force’s all-new fighter jet, dubbed the F-47.

Weinstein’s #MeToo rape retrial opens with added allegations from a former model

0

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein ’s #MeToo retrial opened Wednesday, giving a new jury a fresh look at familiar rape and sexual assault allegations — plus a newly added claim from a former model.

For the first time, prosecutors publicly identified Kaja Sokola and detailed her account of what unfolded between her and the Oscar-winning movie producer in the early 2000s. He is criminally charged with forcing oral sex on her in 2006, but she also accused him in a civil lawsuit of groping her against her will four years earlier, when she was 16.

Like the two other accusers in the case, Sokola alleges a complex series of encounters and reactions — being sexually assaulted, yet staying in touch, wary of Weinstein but wanting to remain on good terms with a power broker who dangled the possibility of an acting career.

“Why did the defendant hold this level of power and control in the eyes of these three women? … It’s because Harvey Weinstein defined the field,” prosecutor Shannon Lucey told jurors in an opening statement. “He knew how tempting promises of success were. He produced, he choreographed, he therefore directed, their ultimate silence for years.”

Weinstein has pleaded not guilty, and defense lawyer Arthur Aidala countered by portraying the accusers as willing partners in a showbiz quid pro quo.

“The casting couch is not a crime scene,” Aidala told the majority-female jury. He compared prosecutors’ allegations to the preview of a movie that “falls flat on its face.”

A reversal and a retrial

The 73-year-old Weinstein, seated in the wheelchair he now uses because of health problems, didn’t look at Lucey or the jury during her presentation. But Weinstein watched intently as Aidala outlined his defense.

The retrial is happening because New York’s top court last year threw out Weinstein’s conviction, which in 2020 was a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement against sexual misconduct. The high court found that the previous trial judge allowed prejudicial testimony about allegations separate from the charges.

Weinstein’s retrial is playing out at a different cultural moment than the first. #MeToo, which exploded in 2017 with allegations against Weinstein, has evolved and ebbed.

When Weinstein’s first trial began, chants of “rapist” could be heard from protesters outside. This time, there was none of that.

Sokola’s lawyer, Lindsay Goldbrum, has called Weinstein’s retrial a “signal to other survivors that the system is catching up — and that it’s worth speaking out even when the odds seem insurmountable.”

A teenage model and a movie model

While this jury won’t hear about the allegations that got the first conviction thrown out, the panel is expected to hear from Sokola. After the high court sent the case back for retrial, prosecutors added a criminal sex act charge based on her allegations.

The Polish-born Sokola met Weinstein in 2002 after traveling alone to New York for a modeling trip at age 16, according to prosecutors. She alleges he invited her to lunch to discuss potential acting jobs but detoured to his apartment and demanded she take off her shirt if she wanted to make it in the movie business. Then, Sokola alleges, Weinstein fondled her while making her touch his genitals.

Over the next few years, Sokola stayed in contact with Weinstein, even after telling him off for allegedly groping her in a car around 2004, Lucey told jurors. She said Weinstein arranged for Sokola to be an extra in the 2007 rom-com “The Nanny Diaries,” and she invited him to lunch to impress her visiting sister.

After the lunch, he asked Sokola to check out some scripts in his Manhattan hotel room, ordered her to undress, held her down on a bed, and performed oral sex on her while she tearfully implored him not to do so, Lucey said.

In the weeks after, Sokola was photographed with Weinstein and a third person at an event, and his company wrote her an acting-school recommendation, the prosecutor said. Lucey told jurors that power imbalances often “cause victims to behave in ways that laypersons possibly might not expect.”

After other allegations emerged against Weinstein in 2017, Sokola sued. Prosecutors said she received $3.5 million in compensation.

Two of the original charges remain

Aidala said the accusers were “trying to take advantage of Mr. Weinstein when he was at the top,” then benefited from making allegations amid his downfall.

Outside court, Sokola’s attorney decried Weinstein’s defense as full of “victim blaming” and “rape myths.”

In addition to the charge related to Sokola, Weinstein is being retried on a criminal sex act charge for allegedly forcibly performing oral sex on then-production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006, and a third-degree rape charge for allegedly assaulting then-aspiring actor Jessica Mann in 2013.

Weinstein’s 2020 acquittals on predatory sexual assault and first-degree rape charges still stand.

After the attorneys’ statements, testimony started Wednesday with details of Weinstein’s high-flying workdays around 2006. Witness Stefan Sterns — who was then one of Weinstein’s assistants — expounded on the producer’s reputation as a Hollywood kingmaker, recalled dropping him off to meet Haley in a hotel lobby and remembered seeing her name on a call log.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people alleging sexual assault unless they consent to be named, as Haley, Mann and Sokola have done.

Opening statements begin in New York

0

Attorneys delivered opening statements on Wednesday in the New York retrial of Harvey Weinstein, with prosecutors accusing the disgraced film producer of using his immense power in Hollywood to sexually harass and abuse three women.

“The defendant wanted their bodies, and the more they resisted, the more forceful he got,” Assistant District Attorney Shannon Lucey told jurors on Wednesday.

In his third trial in five years, Weinstein is accused of sexually abusing a former television production assistant, an aspiring actress and a model.

The former film mogul has pleaded not guilty, and in court his lawyer sought to cast doubt on the women’s claims and credibility.

Attorney Arthur Aidala told the jury the prosecution case would “fall flat on its face” after they heard all the evidence.

“They’re going to ask you to make sense of things that just don’t make sense,” he said.

A court of appeals overturned Weinstein’s previous conviction for sex crimes in New York last April, before he was indicted on new sexual assault charges in the state in September.

Last week, 12 jurors – seven women and five men – were chosen to weigh Weinstein’s fate.

On Wednesday, Ms Lucey spent an hour delivering an opening statement, telling jurors that three women had fallen victim to the abuse of a “Hollywood gatekeeper” who held “unfettered power for over 30 years in that industry”.

The retrial in New York is centred on two women who brought allegations against Weinstein for his 2020 trial, actress Jessica Mann and former TV production assistant Miriam Haley. This time, the trial also includes allegations from former Polish model and actress Kaja Sokola, who has accused Weinstein of assaulting her when she was 16.

On Wednesday, Ms Lucey recounted the three women’s stories of assault and harassment, sparing few details. The alleged encounters often involved Weinstein bringing women to his room under the guise of a business meeting, before he allegedly forced himself onto them.

Victims “kept their shame and their pain to themselves” for years because of Weistein’s role as a man who “defined the field” of acting and film, Ms Lucey said.

During his hour of opening statements that followed, Weinstein’s attorney took a combative approach, accusing the women of having “mutually beneficial” sexual relationships with Weinstein and being motivated by money.

“These women are addicted to that fame,” Mr Aidala said. “They want to be heroes.”

Mr Aidala argued that Weinstein could not have assaulted the women because they kept in contact with him and sent him friendly messages after the encounters.

Last April, a court of appeals said Weinstein, now 73, did not receive a fair trial in New York in 2020 because the judge overseeing his case allowed testimony from women who made allegations against him for conduct he was never charged over.

Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison after being convicted.

He was also found guilty of rape in a separate trial in California in 2022 and was sentenced to 16 years in that case.

Weinstein has several medical conditions, including cancer and diabetes. In September, he was taken to hospital for heart surgery and has been held in a secure hospital unit.

A judge has approved a request from Weinstein’s lawyers to let him stay at the Bellevue hospital in Manhattan when he is not in court.

His lawyers had complained that he was receiving poor medical treatment in unhygienic conditions at the infamous Rikers Island prison facility – which officials have long said they plan to close – though the move has been delayed.

In total, Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct, assault and rape by more than 100 women.

He is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison, as he has yet to begin serving his 16-year California sentence.

The decision by his accusers to come forward, and his subsequent conviction in New York, galvanised the #MeToo movement against sex abuse by powerful men.

Speaking to jurors on Wednesday, Ms Lucey said the movement had allowed the three women to come forward in the criminal case against Weinstein after they “suddenly realized they were not alone”.

Before the allegations against him emerged, Weinstein and his brother Bob were among Hollywood’s ultimate power players.

Weinstein co-founded Miramax film studio, whose hits included Shakespeare in Love, which won best picture at the Academy Awards, and Pulp Fiction.

His films have received more than 300 Oscar nominations and 81 wins.

The former film mogul has also faced a number of civil lawsuits, including from a group of women who accused him of sexual harassment and rape and reached a $19m (£14.2) settlement with him in 2020.

Coach accused of punching Tulsa student in face – 102.3 KRMG

0

A coach at Tulsa’s Booker T. Washington High School is being accused of punching an East Central High School student at a track meet last week.

So far, Tulsa Police haven’t given much information about the case.

But jail records show the coach, 41-year-old Gui Lowmack, was arrested and booked yesterday on complaints of Aggravated Assault and Assault and Battery on a Minor.

Tulsa Public Schools sent out a statement there was an “altercation” at the end of the Hornet Track Classic last Thursday.

The student’s parents claim that Lowmack struck her in the face, and there are reports it was caught on camera, but police have not released the recording.

According to police records, a fight between students broke out around 6:15 p.m. during the meet.

TPS adjunct coach arrested for assault after incident ends track meet

Assistant Coach Gui Lowmack was seen hitting a student in the face with his hand, “causing great bodily harm.”

Lowmack turned himself in on April 21 and is in jail on complaints of assault and battery on a minor and aggravated assault and battery.

Police records say the incident was caught on-site school cameras. 2 News asked TPS to review the footage, but they declined to release the video, citing FERPA protections.

When 2 News asked about the incident on April 18, TPS gave us this statement:

I wanted to reach out to you following the suspension of yesterday’s track meet. There is nothing we take more seriously at Tulsa Public Schools than the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and fans. That concern extends to our fellow competitors as well. Toward the conclusion of yesterday’s meet, an altercation caused a significant disruption to the competition. After conferring with our security team and leadership, and out of an abundance of caution, we determined that suspending the meet was the most appropriate action.

The quick response of our Campus Police team and officials on site de-escalated the situation and allowed for a safe and orderly departure from the event. We are grateful for the immediate action of all involved.

Tulsa Public Schools Campus Police department is investigating this incident thoroughly and, per district procedures, cooperating with all relevant local law enforcement agencies.

We value our relationship with all our neighboring districts and look forward to our next opportunity to host your student-athletes, staff, and spectators.

I appreciate your partnership and am available at any time if you have questions or concerns.

2 News followed up with TPS after learning of Lowmack’s arrest. Here’s what they said:

We hold any individual working with or supporting Tulsa students and families to the highest of standards and expect adults to serve as exemplary role models for our young people. The individual in question was not a full-time employee of Tulsa Public Schools, but had been working as an adjunct coach this season up through Thursday, April 17, 2025.

While we are not able to share details in matters covered by employee protections or under active investigation, we are cooperating with authorities’ investigation of the incident. We will continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our young people and team members in all of our actions and decisions as a school district.

GE Vernova rides AI power boom into uncertain future

0

Unlock the Editor’s Digest for free

In a corner of the American rustbelt, factory workers at GE’s former power business are betting a revival driven by the AI revolution will survive the global trade war and supply chain havoc unleashed by Donald Trump.

GE Vernova, formed a year ago after the conglomerate’s break-up, is investing nearly $600mn to expand its former headquarters in Schenectady, in New York state, and other sites to make equipment for gas-fired power plants and to help overhaul the US’s ageing electricity grid.

The strategy aligns with the Trump administration’s push to reshore manufacturing and break the US’s reliance on overseas supply chains — especially China.

It is also part of a broader pivot to natural gas in an economy where artificial intelligence data centres’ are expected to need huge volumes of reliable, round-the-clock electricity — and the fossil fuels promoted by President Trump over renewables can supply it.

These trends have supercharged GE Vernova’s share price, which tripled to a high of $438 in January following its April 2024 spin-off, after repeated losses from its troubled wind energy business.

GE Vernova has roughly 4,500 employees and contractors at its Schenectady facility, the original site of GE when it was founded in 1892 © John Tully/FT

But analysts warn that the post-spin off euphoria is under threat, as the efficiency gains made by China’s DeepSeek AI model leave investors wondering if the technology will need as much power as thought.

GE Vernova’s shares have fallen by 26 per cent since hitting a peak on January 23, when Trump unveiled his $500bn Stargate project for AI.

“If the AI hype cycle comes down to earth . . . the stock is going to feel pressure,” said Brett Castelli, an equity analyst at Morningstar Research.

In addition to doubts over power projections, Trump’s attacks on renewable energy and his aggressive trade war have become potential problems for the company’s wind business and supply chains.

After two decades of stagnation, US electricity consumption has risen to record highs and is expected to grow another 16 per cent by 2029, driven by AI data centres and onshoring, according to think-tank Grid Strategies.

That market dynamic has transformed GE Vernova’s gas turbine business. Orders for turbines doubled last year and the company is fully booked into 2028.

Its electrification business, which produces grid equipment, has seen orders rise almost 20 per cent year-over-year. “We’re going into an investment supercycle,” Scott Strazik, GE Vernova’s chief executive, said in an interview last month.

But the demand outlook is fraught with risk given the uncertainties around AI.

The Electric Power Research Institute, for example, projects data centres could consume as little as 4.6 per cent of US electricity by 2030, up from just 4 per cent. But it also says the share could reach nearly 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Department of Energy suggests demand could triple by 2028.

“GE Vernova is a play on the electrification of the economy and rising electricity demand . . . The variable that has the widest range of outcomes is AI,” said Castelli.

Line chart of GE Vernova share price, $ showing GE Vernova’s shares haven’t recovered since the debut of DeepSeek

Its wind business has also hit some turbulence. Two years ago under the renewables-friendly Biden administration, the company planned to turn Schenectady into a growth centre for the industry.

But it has been a lossmaking part of the business, under pressure from supply chain constraints, high interest rates, and a disastrous offshore wind blade collapse last summer due to a manufacturing deviation.

Now Trump’s permitting freeze and effort to scrap the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden’s signature climate law extending subsidies for wind developers, has left the entire offshore wind sector in peril.

Just last week, the administration scrapped a huge $5bn offshore wind project from Equinor that was already in development.

GE Vernova’s orders for onshore and offshore wind turbines nearly halved last year, and the company announced it was no longer taking new offshore orders and downsizing the business.

“The moment of growth inflection is very hard to call,” Strazik told the FT.

Trump’s tariff war on countries following his April 2 “liberation day” announcement have also thrown the supply chain of US manufacturers into uncertainty.

Strazik and other GE Vernova executives, however, dismissed concerns about the future, pointing to substantial power demand growth beyond the US and AI data centres, a continued global transition to lower carbon energy, and their investments in the US supply chain.

“This is where it helps to be a US based company,” Strazik said. “We’ll continue to localise our businesses to the extent that the geopolitical supply chains are complicated.”
