Three-Time Oscar Winner Daniel Day-Lewis Is Being Eyed To Play Magneto In Marvel Studios’ X-MEN Reboot

0

With Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier set to direct Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot, the rumour mill continues churning out possible names for the highly anticipated movie (which, for what it’s worth, we’ve heard is currently being referred to as Uncanny X-Men internally at the studio).

We’re not putting too much stock into any of these casting claims, but following this past week’s Professor X and Jean Grey rumours, there’s a possible update on the MCU’s Magneto.

According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing three-time Oscar winner Sir Daniel Day-Lewis for the role of the Master of Magnetism. Would he ever really consider a superhero movie role? We wouldn’t bank on it, though the same might have once been said for Sir Ian McKellen.

It’s worth noting that this comes after the insider said, “No new [X-Men] cast will be introduced in the upcoming Avengers films, because the focus is on giving closure to the original characters. Casting hasn’t started yet because director Jake Schreier hasn’t officially signed on. That’s why Sadie Sink isn’t playing Jean Grey.”

“That said, there are three roles Kevin Feige has specific actors (or at least types) in mind for: Xavier, Magneto, and Storm. The names he’s considering feel a bit too big to actually land, but you’ll see — I’ll mention them soon. Aside from those three, I haven’t heard of any other actors being considered yet,” they added.

So, while the studio would like Day-Lewis to play Magneto, no offer has gone out, and he’s likely just indicative of the type of actor Feige would like to see fill the role in the MCU. After McKellen and Michael Fassbender, we’re not shocked to see that Kevin Feige is aiming high.

Day-Lewis won the “Best Actor” Oscar for his roles in My Left FootThere Will Be Blood, and Lincoln. He’s also known for In the Name of the Father, Gangs of New York, Phantom Thread, and The Last of the Mohicans

McKellen is confirmed to return as Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor X. They’ll be joined by Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit), though this X-Men team feels far from complete.

Meanwhile, a lesser-known social media scooper, @mainmiddleman, has claimed that Kirby Howell-Baptiste (The Sandman) and Jodie Turner-Smith (The Acolyte) are contenders to suit up as the MCU’s Storm post-Avengers: Secret Wars. Hereditary star Alex Wolff is also said to be in talks for an unknown role.

Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot doesn’t have a confirmed release date.

Famous defaced NYC Banksy mural headed to auction

0

Providing a legal parking spot to a motorist who turned out to be the artist Banksy was a good deed that could be worth millions of dollars.

Banksy painted a massive mural “Battle to Survive a Broken Heart” on a warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in 2013.

The 6-by-9 foot, 7,500-pound  section of the wall — now on display at The Winter Garden at Brookfield Place —will be auctioned by Arlan Ettinger’s Guernsey’s on May 21.

Anastasios Georgiadis, whose father Vassilios gave Banksy a place to park his van, told me, “My father was outside smoking a cigarette. Banksy pulled up and parked. My dad knew it was illegal. He said, ‘Pull up over her. Park in my driveway.’”

Banksy, who remains anonymous because much of his graffiti art is illegal, was described as middle-aged with shaggy hair, glasses and a fisherman’s hat. He had a British accent.

The next day the artwork was on the warehouse wall. After another artist Omar NYC tagged it, Banksy came back and wrote under his name “is a jealous little girl.”

Vassilios hired security to protect the mural, then removed the brick wall. “We took it out to preserve it,” Anastasios said.

His father died of heart disease four years ago, and now Anastasios and his mother are selling the mural with 45 percent going to The American Heart Association.

“That’s a piece of my father we’re letting go. I think Banksy saw the pain in his eyes. Hopefully it helps save some lives,” Anastasios said.

Carla Cooke will bring back the magic of her father, the legendary singer Sam Cooke, when she debuts at 54 Below on May 28.

Born in Harlem, Carla Cooke found her voice singing gospel music just like her father, the son of a Baptist minister.

Carla was only 4 months old when her dad was shot dead in Los Angeles in 1964. Sam Cooke was only 33.

He left behind recordings like “Chain Gang,” “Summertime,” “Wonderful World,” “Sentimental Reasons,” and perhaps his most influential song, written from Cooke’s personal experience with racism, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” which became an anthem of the Civil Rights movement.

“I am determined not to let the world ever forget Sam Cooke,” Carla said.

“There are many children of legendary artists who never got the chance to know their fathers. Singing my father’s songs is a way for me to keep him alive.”

Mark Linn-Baker is known as a TV star in shows like “Perfect Strangers,” and a movie actor in films such as “My Favorite Year” alongside Peter O’Toole, but he’s been on Broadway for decades.

“I’ve been in New York since 1978,” Linn-Baker told me from his current home in Washington Heights.

The actor is rehearsing now to open June 2 at New World Stages as the lead in Moliere’s comedy “The Imaginary Invalid.”

“Molière is a master of social satire,” he said. “This play is an assault on the medical profession, a current topic as politicians contemplate cuts to Medicaid.”

Linn-Baker plays a notorious hypochondriac whose nonexistent illnesses blind him to the con men and women, including his new wife, who prey on his fears to fatten their purses. His plan: marry his daughter to a doctor so he’ll have free health care for the rest of his life.

Linn-Baker said he’s always loved performing live on stage, but “unless you are on Broadway, you can’t make a living.”

Since it costs $20 million to mount a Broadway show, risk-averse producers stick to revivals.

“I’m not a businessman and Broadway is a business, a risky business. There’s pressure to stick to the tried and true.”

Even Ph.D.s hosting brainy game shows can be forgetful.

Former “Jeopardy” host Mayim Bialik, who has a doctorate in neuroscience, realized she forgot her passport en route to Paris for a photo shoot.

Bialik, who also starred in “The Big Bang Theory,” was due to shoot the cover of CBS’s magazine, “Watch,” but forgot her passport in L.A. Luckily, her ex-husband was able to break into her home in Hollywood and FedEx it to her in Atlanta, where she bought herself a new plane ticket. The quick-thinking strategy saved the shoot.

MLB Picks Today: Greg Peterson Best Bets for May 18

0

MLB Picks Today:

Expert baseball handicapper Greg Peterson shares his top MLB picks today for Sunday, May 18.

Check out Greg’s Daily MLB Lines and his Baseball Betting Show Podcast. Also, check out our MLB Betting Splits.

1:35 PM Eastern

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The pitching matchup is a mismatch: Paul Skenes owns a 2.63 ERA, allowing just 0.7 home runs and 2.5 walks per nine innings, while Phillies starter Mick Abel is making his MLB debut after posting a 2.53 ERA at the AAA level this season. However, the Pirates rank last in the league in scoring with just 3.1 runs per game, which could neutralize the pitching edge.

Pick: Phillies Moneyline +103 (Greg’s Handicap: Phillies -113)

Washington Nationals vs. Baltimore Orioles

Nationals starter Mike Soroka enters with a rough 6.43 ERA over a small two-start sample, and across all 28 appearances since the start of 2024, he’s 0-12 with a 5.00 ERA, 1.4 home runs, and 4.6 walks per nine innings. On the flip side, Orioles starter Zach Eflin has been one of the team’s few bright spots, going 3-1 in four starts with a 3.13 ERA, allowing just 0.8 home runs and 1.2 walks per nine.

Pick: Orioles Run Line -1.5 +120 (Greg’s Handicap: Orioles -1.5 -107)

2:10 PM Eastern

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Kansas City Royals

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore appears to have turned a corner this season, posting a 3.11 ERA with a 2.30 FIP, allowing just 0.4 home runs and 1.4 walks per nine. Royals starter Michael Wacha counters with a 2.96 ERA and just two home runs allowed across nine starts.

Pick: Under 8.5 Runs (-115)

2:20 PM Eastern

Cleveland Guardians vs. Cincinnati Reds

Reds starter Andrew Abbott has been sharp with a 2.10 ERA and 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Guardians starter Luis Ortiz owns a 4.78 ERA with a 4.09 FIP and 10.4 strikeouts per nine. The bullpen edge goes to the Reds, whose 3.53 ERA ranks 10th, compared to Cleveland’s 4.19, which ranks 19th.

Pick: Reds Moneyline -115 (Greg’s Handicap: Reds -148)

Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs

Cubs starter Colin Rea boasts a 2.48 ERA, though his 3.22 FIP and 7.2 strikeouts per nine suggest some possible regression. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon has led his team to three wins in his past four starts, posting a 3.60 ERA and allowing just four runs over his last three outings.

Pick: White Sox Moneyline +260 (Greg’s Handicap: White Sox +234)

4:10 PM Eastern

Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres

Padres starter Michael King holds a 2.32 ERA with 10 strikeouts and 0.9 home runs allowed per nine innings, though a 3.24 FIP suggests he might regress. Mariners starter Bryan Woo has a 2.84 ERA and 2.69 FIP, allowing just 0.7 home runs and 1.4 walks per nine. Seattle’s lineup is averaging 5.5 runs per game on the road, fourth-best in the league.

Pick: Over 7 Runs (Greg’s Handicapped Total: 7.9)

7:10 PM Eastern

New York Mets vs. New York Yankees

Yankees ace Max Fried has been dominant with a 1.11 ERA and just 0.5 home runs allowed per nine. Mets starter David Peterson has a solid 3.05 ERA and 0.8 home runs per nine, backed by a bullpen sporting a 2.92 ERA—third-best in the league.

Pick: Under 8.5 Runs (Greg’s Handicapped Total: 7.8

Brewers Might Trade For $39 Million Angels Veteran To Stay In Contention

0

The Milwaukee Brewers have stayed afloat in 2025 despite a pitching staff ravaged by injuries.

Pat Murphy’s rotation has leaned heavily on Freddy Peralta and patchwork solutions (José Quintana has impressed). Entering Thursday, the Brewers were 21-23, four games back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. All is not lost, and the season is still young.

When May turns to June and the July 31 trade deadline approaches, Milwaukee’s general manager, Matt Arnold, might prioritize rotation reinforcements to maintain the team’s postseason hopes.

A veteran starter with proven durability and postseason potential could be the missing piece to solidify the Brewers’ rotation and fuel a successful rest of the regular season.

One intriguing target for the Brew Crew is Los Angeles Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson.

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter noted on Thursday, “Tyler Anderson, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo were all popular names on the rumor mill last summer, and all three are potential trade candidates once again this year after staying put. Anderson, 35, has a 2.58 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 45.1 innings pitching in the final season of a three-year, $39 million deal.”

Anderson’s season so far makes him an attractive option for a Brewers team desperate for stability. His ability to limit walks and induce soft contact aligns well with Milwaukee’s pitching philosophy, and his $13 million salary for 2025 fits within the team’s budget constraints.

Acquiring Anderson could provide an immediate impact. Trading for him might require parting with mid-tier prospects, but the Brewers’ deep farm system can absorb the cost.

If Milwaukee remains in contention, adding Anderson could be the key to securing at least a Wild Card spot and making noise in the playoffs.

Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill Takes No Offense at Colts Jab, Delivers One of His Own

0

Say what you want about Tyreek Hill, but the Miami Dolphins wide receiver can take a joke.

He also can deliver one.

That was on full display in the aftermath of the “controversy” involving the Indianapolis Colts’ schedule release video, particularly the very start highlighting their Week 1 game against the Dolphins at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The video took a jab at Hill with a Minecraft cartoon showing him swimming (dolphins, remember) and then getting arrested by the Coast Guard — a reference to Hill getting detained by police prior to the Dolphins’ 2024 season against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium.

Eventually, the Colts deleted the video Wednesday night and released a statement Thursday morning: “We removed our schedule release video because it exceeded our rights with Microsoft and included an insensitive clip involving Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. We sincerely apologize to Microsoft and Tyreek.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Colts reached out to Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to pass along their apology.

Hill later took to X to actually defend the Colts’ shot at him.

But then Tyreek took it a step further with his own jab at the Colts’ social media team, and we’ve got to give him props for a good joke.

The Los Angeles Chargers are known for doing creative social media content and taking some jabs, and they were at it against this year.

The Chargers and Dolphins will play in Week 6 at Hard Rock Stadium, and Los Angeles’ video features what feels like countless easter eggs for the Dolphins.

Miami’s part of the video starts with multiple Dolphins players and coach Mike McDaniel meeting with Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield — who Hill recently put on social media as one of his top five QBs in the NFL while leaving out Tua Tagovailoa — on a yacht called the “Dan Marina,” an obvious reference to Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino.

The meeting is likely a reference to when the Dolphins lost multiple draft picks for tampering with QB Tom Brady while he was under contract with the Patriots and Buccaneers, and Don Yee, the agent of then-Saints coach Sean Payton.

The video then shows the ship’s inside, which features Hill running late to the meeting. That is a pretty on-the-nose reference to McDaniel’s end-of-season comments about players missing meetings and getting fined this past season.

Hill runs past an elevator with Chargers QB Justin Herbert on it, referencing the Dolphins’ tradition of putting pictures from the week’s previous game on an elevator inside their facility.

Lastly, McDaniel jumps off the yacht into the ocean, where a re-creation of his famous Sunday Night Football interview, when he ran off the field, takes place. Instead, the Chargers have him swimming away like a dolphin.

Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin plans to return for 21st season

0

ARLINGTON, Va. — Alex Ovechkin said Saturday that he intends to return to the Washington Capitals for his 21st NHL season after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career goal-scoring record earlier this spring.

Ovechkin joked about joining the minor league Hershey Bears for their playoff run and indicated the question wasn’t whether he would be back but rather whether he had what it takes to earn a spot.

“First of all, [I have] to make a roster at 40 years old,” Ovechkin quipped on locker cleanout day, less than 48 hours after he and the Capitals were eliminated in the second round by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ovechkin, who turns 40 in September, has one season left on the five-year, $47.5 million contract he signed in 2021. He said he is approaching the summer like any other, planning to train the same way in the offseason and see where things go.

“I’m going to use those couple months [in the offseason] to rest, enjoy my life, then back to work,” Ovechkin said. “Me and [trainer Pavel Burlachenko are] going do our job to get ready for the season and just do my best.”

Ovechkin is coming off a whirlwind season in which he overcame a broken leg to score 44 goals — the third most in the league — and pass Gretzky’s career mark of 894 that long seemed unapproachable. The Russian superstar has 897.

“For him to come back this year and play the way that he did, chase down this record, the start that he had, breaking his leg, coming back from that, and just continuing to not only do things he did individually, statistically, but lead our team — that’s part of the story that will be a minor part of it, but it’s a big part of it,” coach Spencer Carbery said after the Game 5 loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday night. “He did what he came back this year to prove and show, and he did it in the playoffs as well. I tip my cap to ‘O’ and the season that he had and as our captain leading the way.”

Ovechkin led the team with five goals in 10 games this postseason but had just one goal in the second round as he and the team fell short of the Eastern Conference finals for the 15th time in 16 appearances during his career. The other time was their Stanley Cup run in 2018, when Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Going into next season, Ovechkin wants to work toward chasing a second championship.

“I’m looking forward for next year,” Ovechkin said. “I’m going to try to do my best to play, and my team is going to help me too. … I just want to come back next year and see the team who’s capable of winning the Stanley Cup.”

Beyond that, he’s not sure what the future holds when his contract comes to an end.

“I haven’t thought about it yet, but we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Ovechkin said. “I’m going to try to do my best to be able to do well next year, and we’ll see.”

Longtime teammate Tom Wilson, guesses “900 and beyond” on the goal counter is coming next for Ovechkin.

“At no point am I thinking in my head that there’s ever going to be a day without Ovi on the Caps,” Wilson said. “He’s still flying out there. He had an incredible season. I think he probably exceeded expectations and beyond. You can never count that guy out. He’s such a tremendous leader. I’m sure he’s going to keep buzzing.”
