In an interview with Them, Airyn De Niro came out as transgender
The daughter of Robert De Niro and Toukie Smith detailed growing up “out of the limelight” and finding success on her own merit
Airyn, an aspiring actress and model, is also studying to be a mental health counselor, she said
Robert De Niro’s daughter Airyn has come out as transgender.
In an interview with Them published Tuesday, April 29, about “stepping into this new identity,” as Airyn said, the aspiring actress and model shared revealing details about her life as one of Robert’s seven kids. Her mother, actress Toukie Smith, shares Airyn and twin brother Julian with the 81-year-old Oscar winner.
“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen,” Airyn, 29, told Them contributor Ava Pauline Emilione. “I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”
After The Daily Mail and other outlets reported on a recent appearance of hers and got “information wrong,” Airyn explained, “They just sort of reminded me that people really don’t know anything about me.”

Addressing those outlets labeling her a “nepo baby” due to her father, she said, “I wasn’t brought up having a side part in one of dad’s movies or going to business meetings or attending premieres. My dad was very big on us finding our own sort of path… I would want [success] to happen on my own merit.”
“Obviously, no parent is perfect, but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight,” she said of Robert and Smith. “They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”

Airyn also spoke frankly about growing up as a “late bloomer,” body dysmorphia and beauty standards.
“I was always told I was too much of something or not enough of something growing up: Too big, not skinny enough. Not Black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, not masculine enough,” she shared. “It was never just, ‘You’re just right, just the way you are.’ ”
Drawing inspiration from her mother and “the influence Black women have had on me,” she continued, she decided to begin hormone therapy last November.
“I’d want to hopefully be an inspiration for at least one other person like me who is Black, who is queer, who’s not a size extra small,” said Airyn. “I’d want to see more trans women, more Black women who are maybe bigger-bodied or don’t fit the mold of super thin or heroin chic.”

Studying to become a mental health counselor is part of that mission. “People of color and queer people definitely need more mental health advocacy and support,” said Airyn. “So I’m hoping I’m able to do that.”

The year had barely begun when Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida demanded legislation cracking down on illegal immigration — before President Trump was inaugurated, and before any other state could beat him to it.
The Republican governor got his wish. And now, the impact of the state’s new, aggressive enforcement powers is starting to become clear.
The Trump administration has boasted of making hundreds of immigration arrests in Florida, with the state’s help. A South Florida detention center has added a plexiglass structure with rows of cots to deal with overcrowding. Mr. DeSantis and his handpicked attorney general, James Uthmeier, threatened to remove members of a City Council who initially opposed working with federal officials on immigration enforcement, accusing them of embracing “sanctuary policies.”
In recent weeks, Mr. Uthmeier also seemed to defy a federal judge’s order on one of the new state laws. The judge, Kathleen M. Williams of the Federal District Court in Miami, temporarily blocked part of one law that makes it a state crime for unauthorized immigrants to enter Florida. Despite the judge’s order, Mr. Uthmeier told police officers that he “cannot prevent” them from making arrests under the law in question.
Such has been the tumult playing out in Florida since Mr. DeSantis signed two sweeping immigration laws in February, saying that he wanted to be on the front lines of helping the Trump administration carry out mass deportations. The measures have entangled every level of state government and unnerved residents who had long considered Florida an immigrant haven.
“I’ve never seen so many people so scared or concerned in 50 years that I’ve been working in Miami,” said Wilfredo O. Allen, an immigration lawyer.
The tension has been most palpable in South Florida, which is heavily Hispanic. The region’s politicians largely avoid anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies, given that about 54 percent of Miami-Dade County residents are foreign-born and three-quarters speak a language other than English at home. Of particular concern is the federal government’s attempt to end deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans and Haitians, many of whom live in the region.
But Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis both handily won Miami-Dade County, flipping it red and showing how even in one of the nation’s most heavily Hispanic regions, sentiment has shifted in favor of stricter immigration enforcement. South Florida’s Republican members of Congress have done little to push back against the administration’s crackdown. A new political group began publishing ads against some of them last week.
“Deporting good immigrants back to dictatorships is cruel,” one of the ads says. Pictured in it are Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Carlos A. Giménez and María Elvira Salazar, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio. All are Cuban Americans from Miami.
In a state of 23 million, it has been hard to track who exactly has been targeted by the new policies, and where. The Trump administration has offered scant details on the arrests it has conducted with Florida law enforcement, beyond saying that about 780 people around the state were detained in a major operation last week. Immigration activists worry that those arrested include people with no criminal records.
Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have talked about deporting criminals. But “the rhetoric is a mismatch of what is actually happening on the ground,” said Paul R. Chávez, the litigation director for Americans for Immigrant Justice, a legal aid group based in Miami.
Mr. Allen, the immigration lawyer, said one of his clients was a truck driver who was detained by immigration authorities after dumping junk at a public facility without a permit.
City after city in South Florida — including Hialeah, which is heavily Cuban; Doral, which is heavily Venezuelan; and Homestead, which has a significant farmworker community — have entered into formal agreements known as 287(g) to help federal authorities with immigration enforcement. Only one city, South Miami, has gone to court to argue that such formal cooperation is not required under the new state laws.
“At this point, it feels like the governor and state attorney general are trying to intimidate people so they can tell the world that every municipality in Florida has signed on to help,” Mayor Javier E. Fernández of South Miami, a Democrat whose office is nonpartisan, said in an interview.
In February, Mr. DeSantis announced that all 67 county sheriff’s offices had adopted 287(g) agreements, making Florida the first state in the country to have such wide buy-in.
“This is a task force model, which will lead to street-level enforcement operations,” he said. “This is the maximum participation that a local entity can have.”
Chief Edward James Hudak Jr. of the Coral Gables Police Department, which signed a 287(g) agreement, said police departments were used to cooperating with their federal partners. His officers will not be checking the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses or anyone who has not been charged with a crime, he said.
“My department is going to look at it as, this is just an additional tool,” said Chief Hudak, who also serves as the legislative chair for the Florida Police Chiefs Association. “We don’t want someone to not call us or not say something if they’re in fear for their status.”
Lawyers and organizations that defend immigrants’ rights say that such arrangements have tended to lead to racial profiling.
But the politics in Florida have moved steadily toward stricter immigration enforcement, starting during the first Trump administration. Mr. DeSantis banned so-called sanctuary cities in 2019, the year he took office — and noted this year that he had done so ahead of the White House. His stance represents a sea change from when Gov. Jeb Bush, a fellow Republican who led the state two decades ago, espoused relatively liberal positions on immigration.
Even Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican who was an immigration hard-liner, later allowed certain immigrants brought into the country illegally as children to receive in-state tuition rates at public universities — a policy that the new legislation reversed.
Under other provisions of the two laws signed in February, unauthorized immigrants convicted of a capital offense are supposed to receive the death penalty. And nearly $300 million will be allocated to help local agencies assist with federal immigration enforcement, overseen by a new State Board of Immigration Enforcement.
”Florida has been, I think, one of the laboratories for experimentation, with harsh anti-immigrant measures for years now,” said Cody Wofsy, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union in San Francisco who is part of the team challenging Florida’s illegal entry law, saying it encroaches on federal duties.
In a hearing in that case on Tuesday, Judge Williams upbraided the lawyers representing Mr. Uthmeier, the attorney general, for “inviting police officers” to continue making arrests even after she issued her order.
“What I am offended by, and what I do find problematic, is someone suggesting, ‘You don’t have to follow that order, it’s not legitimate,’” she said.
Mr. Uthmeier initially wrote to local law enforcement agencies that while he disagreed with the judge’s order, sheriff’s deputies and police officers should hold off on making further arrests while the case moved through the courts. He then followed up with a letter that said he could not “prevent” such arrests from taking place.
On Tuesday, his lawyers argued that the letter laid out Mr. Uthmeier’s legal position. “We just don’t read it as inviting violations” to the judge’s order, Jeffrey Paul DeSousa, the acting solicitor general in Florida, said in court.
The judge forcefully disagreed and asked Mr. Uthmeier’s lawyers to provide some kind of redress for his second letter. His lawyers asked for more time to “have further conversations with our front office,” suggesting that the attorney general was unlikely to back down.

The Edmonton Oilers’ main goalie has had a rough last two games. His team now trails the best-of-seven series 2-1 to the Florida Panthers.

The Oilers’ struggles the past two games are not all on Skinner, but you’re not alone if you’ve thought, “Man, the Oilers sure could have used a few big saves tonight.”
Of course, Skinner hasn’t exactly had a lot of help. According to Clear Sight Analytics, the Panthers have generated 27 high-danger chances through just three games — the Oilers gave up just 28 in the whole of the Dallas series last round, 32 across the five games of the Vegas series.
That’s a lot. If you’re going to stick with below-average goaltending, you’ve got to defend in front better
The Oilers have made a choice over the years to not chase after a high-profile netminder. They have stuck it out the past two seasons, paying a combined $3.5 million to Skinner and backup Calvin Pickard, basically a third of what the Panthers pay to just their undisputed No. 1 goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

It will be interesting to see what Florida GM Bill Zito does this summer. Bobrovsky’s big contract comes to an end, and it wasn’t a deal signed by Zito, rather by his predecessor Dale Tallon (who is now a Canucks senior adviser, for the record).
You can look at the choice the Oilers have made with their goalies and note two things: First, that they’ve made two Stanley Cup Finals back-to-back with this tandem, so maybe goalies are an area you should hold your salary cap line on. But second, that maybe they should have found themselves a goalie that costs a little more?
If they do go hunting for an upgrade, even a small one, will that happen this summer? There isn’t exactly a surge of goalies coming available in free agency soon — but there could be a number of names available in the summer of 2026. And there are lessons here for the Canucks.

“Why pay premium in the summer when you can shop before the (2026) deadline with a list that currently could include Demko, Markstrom, Bob, Gustavsson, Stolarz, Nedeljkovic, Brossoit, Andersen, Talbot and Ingram,” posits InGoal Magazine’s Kevin Woodley. “Sure, some will re-up, but that’s a pretty good list to choose from ranging from great 1B to legit No. 1 starters.”
Demko being in the list is a reminder of how the Canucks may have to make some choices in goal themselves: they’ve got Kevin Lankinen under contract, so half their tandem is clearly settled. But what’s the thinking on Demko, who for all intents and purposes remains No. 1 on their depth chart, though he’s coming off yet another injury-plagued season.

In the moment, with the Canucks dreaming of becoming not just a playoff team again but a cup contender — with Quinn Hughes’ future up in the air, how could they not push their chips in now? — you’d expect they’d want to hang on to Demko. When he’s at his best, he’s one of the NHL’s best. But do the Canucks believe they can get his best? Or is he better suited to be a trade chip, especially when there aren’t a ton of goalie options for other teams to choose from this summer? Of course, it’s hard to fathom the Canucks trading Demko, even with his durability question marks, to a division rival.
But what about other suitors, like say Utah? Or maybe just holding on to him altogether is the play: if he does recover his health, his form won’t be far behind and if you get a big performance out of him you’re going places. And if the task is to be a cup contender next year …
But also: can you be a cup contender without a proper No. 2 centre? Can you find a No. 2 centre without including Demko in such a package?
Having competent goaltending matters. How much it matters remains a question. But there’s plenty of time to dig further into that.

The Kentucky Derby weather forecast looks good for the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown Saturday, but rain could pose issues for other festivities this week, including the Kentucky Oaks race Friday.
Churchill Downs in Louisville hosts a string of events this week, including Winsday on Wednesday, Thurby on Thursday and the Kentucky Oaks race on Friday, all leading up to the 151st running of the big race around 6:57 p.m. ET.
Rain Chances This Week
Unfortunately, showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast much of this week in Louisville. Here is our look at the forecast through Friday:
– Wednesday: There could be both morning showers, then another round of afternoon showers and storms.
– Thursday: There’s another good bet for showers and thunderstorms.
– Friday: Occasional rain showers may linger during the day.
A Drier Derby?
Fortunately by Saturday afternoon, we expect any showers to have pushed east of Louisville.
That should provide at least several hours of drying of the track before post time early Saturday evening. But given the past few days of rain, we certainly don’t expect a fast track Saturday, as has been in place the last five races in a row.
The last track deemed “sloppy” due to rain was in 2019, when about a third of an inch of rain fell. The previous year, over 3 inches of rain fell on May 5, 2018.
Behind the cold front, we also expect seasonably cool temperatures Saturday, with highs generally holding in the 60s.

Perhaps even a pessimistic individual couldn’t have expected so many issues so early for the Dodgers’ pitching staff. These problems will be apparent here as Los Angeles is forced to use a bullpen game against Sandy Alcantara and the Miami Marlins.
Because of Tyler Glasnow getting placed on the injured list, the Dodgers pitching problems are fairly large, and an alternative brought to the table is that of Ben Casparius joining the rotation. Tony Gonsolin is also on his way back, making his return on Wednesday, and Clayton Kershaw looks set to join the staff as soon as the 60-day IL period allows him to, currently building up in the minors.
While the option of Casparius might be an appealing one in the short term, he is unavailable to pitch Tuesday night against the Marlins, having thrown 3⅔ innings on Sunday, filling in for Glasnow.
Remaining on the subject of pitching needs, it’s far too early for trade talks, but it should be noted, the Marlins’ starter figures to be one of the more highly-sought-after names around the trade deadline.
Alcantara has struggled heavily since his return from Tommy John surgery, but he is coming off his strongest outing, a quality start against the Reds (six innings, five hits, three runs). The stuff is still there, and it just seems like a matter of time until things start to click.
Taking that into account, if history is a reliable indicator, Alcantara is not looking forward all that much to his visit to Dodger Stadium, where he has been absolutely bombed in four career starts, allowing 23 earned runs across 16 innings. Far and away his worst numbers at any park.
Elected the NL Player of the Week last week alongside Eugenio Suárez, Andy Pages just went 2-for-4 on Monday, and looks to prove this isn’t just a fleeting hot streak, but the beginning of a potential breakout campaign.
Maybe it’s Pages, but perhaps it’s just the ninth spot in the order. During the 7-6 win over the Marlins on Monday, the ninth spot went 4 for 5, including the walk-off double. Miguel Rojas went 3 for 3 and was eventually replaced by Tommy Edman, who sent everyone home with a two-run single in the 10th.

Retired educator and part-time yoga instructor Vicki Knight says she feels stretched thin. “I’m semi-retired.” The Marietta, Georgia, resident says her Social Security income is not enough to live on and that a recent stock market selloff fueled by tariff uncertainty has complicated her plans.
Ohio’s Social Security Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients can expect to receive two checks in May 2025.

According to the Social Security Administration’s payment calendar, SSI recipients won’t receive a check in June since the June SSI payment is scheduled for May 30. The June payment is issued early because June 1 falls on a weekend.

Social Security distribution schedules for 2025 and 2026 are available online, according to the Social Security Administration.
Traditional Social Security payments (for recipients who are older or retired) are issued on Wednesdays throughout the month for most recipients.
If your birthdate falls between the first and 10th of the month, you are paid on the second Wednesday of the month, which this month is May 14. If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th, you’re paid on the third Wednesday (May 21). And if you were born after the 20th of the month, you get paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month (May 28), according to the SSA calendar.
Social Security recipients who began getting benefits before May 1997 are paid on the third of the month. If they also get SSI, that benefit comes on the first.

It’s been nearly three and a half years since Embark Studios announced ARC Raiders. Originally, it was meant to be the debut game of the Swedish studio owned by NEXON. However, it was briefly put aside as Embark focused first on the free-to-play competitive first-person shooter game The Finals, currently in Season 6 of its live support after the December 2023 release.
In the meantime, Embark reworked ARC Raiders to be something completely different. The game was initially presented to gamers as a cooperative shooter, but now it has morphed into an extraction shooter that seamlessly combines PvP and PvE elements. However, the setting is the same: a ravaged future Earth ruled by mysterious machines called ARC. Not unlike in the Terminator, humans have had to go underground to survive, and only the titular Raiders dare venture to the surface to scavenge precious resources and technology. That’s what players will be doing, but they’ll have to fend off fellow Raiders, too.
As we found out when Embark provided advanced access to the upcoming tech test, there are solo queues and group queues for up to three players. Before departing for the surface, you’ll have to pick your loadout, which consists of guns, gadgets, armor, ammunition, and the melee Raider tool. There’s also a free loadout option that can be used as a fallback if you don’t have anything left (which can happen if you string a few bad initial matches) or just to avoid risking your items, which are usually gone after dying in a session. There is an exception: the Safe Pocket. You can ‘stash’ three items at first (it may be possible to increase the size of this storage) that won’t be lost upon death. Needless to say, these precious slots must go to your most prized possessions.
Communication within your group is essential, as it only takes a few bullets to put you in down-but-not-out mode. If you’re lucky, you can be rescued by a nearby teammate, but you can also be finished off for good by enemy players; at that point, you’re out for the rest of the round. Rounds last up to 30 minutes – after the countdown expires, you’ll forcibly extract from the surface. If you find enough loot, you can do it at any time during the session by going to the dedicated Extraction Points scattered throughout the maps. These can be elevators or metro stations. However, you should always keep in mind the potential risk of attracting undesired attention from other players during the extraction phase.
So far, it has been fairly standard extraction fare. ARC Raiders does have a few things going on for it, though. Firstly, it is played strictly in third-person view, whereas most games in the genre are played in first-person view. It may not seem like a big difference, but it is, leading to slightly less frenetic action.
The maps seen in the tech test were all very well designed, too, offering a lot of verticality. This aspect is further exploited through ziplines, which can be found already active in the maps or can be dynamically employed by the player if they have one in their inventory. The most important aspect of the game, though, is character progression. Whether you successfully extract or not, you’ll still get experience based on what you achieved in the match (defeating ARC machines or other players, completing various challenges, etc.). Upon leveling up, you can use a skill point to improve certain passive abilities, such as decreasing stamina spent when running or dodging, or even reducing the time it takes for items to appear in the loot window.
In addition to the leveling system, ARC Raiders features a Mastery system where players can chase specific challenges and reach high scores to earn rewards. Unlike regular XP, you don’t get to advance in the Mastery system without a successful extraction.
The game also places a huge emphasis on crafting. Ammunition is a finite resource and it’s also specific (there’s light ammo, medium ammo, and heavy ammo) to the weapon type, so you’ll always be on the lookout for new parts to craft ammo but also bandages to heal yourself and other resources that can be used to craft all sorts of items. Gear can also be upgraded to augment efficiency, while augments increase inventory capacity.
ARC Raiders does have ‘quests’, too. When off a match, you’ll be able to receive these missions from various NPC merchants, obtaining useful rewards upon completion. However, I was disappointed that this is all done via a menu rather than with a proper 3D world interaction, as expected from a triple-A game in 2025. Regardless, you can eventually build crafting stations to create more advanced weapons and weapon mods.
During gameplay, the titular ARC machines can be dangerous. There are various types, too. While the drones are relatively easy to take down, the rollbots are harder to nail down since they’re very quick, and then there are hulking metal beasts that you really should avoid unless you’ve got the gear and experience to take on. Of course, the most unpredictable aspect remains that of other humans. By the way, the game already has proximity VoIP, just in case you want to try and bargain with other Raider groups. Somehow, I doubt that will be commonplace, though.
Graphically, ARC Raiders looks great. It’s powered by Unreal Engine 5 and offers optional NVIDIA RTXGI support, much like Embark’s previous game, The Finals. The game already supports NVIDIA DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, too; however, even on a high-end PC (Ryzen 7 9800X3D, GeForce RTX 5090), there were instances of stuttering. Hopefully, optimization can still improve in the coming months. This is, after all, just a tech test, and we don’t have an inkling of the release window for the game yet.
Last but not least, Embark shared some info on the game’s monetization. Battle Passes can be purchased for Raider Tokens, which players earn by playing the game and leveling up. Within a Battle Pass, players then purchase items inside it with Cred, a currency that the game provides upon completion of Daily Challenges. These are specific missions and tasks that reset every 24 hours. The Tech Test, which begins tomorrow for the public, has three Battle Passes: the Shuttered Storefront, the Back-Alley Market, and the Secluded Courtyard.
So far, ARC Raiders shows promise. It’s too early to tell whether it’ll be the next big extraction shooter or just a passing trend, but Embark seems to have mixed in enough familiar and new elements to create an exciting recipe.
