Tomatoes Recalled In 4 Southern States Due To Possible Salmonella Contamination

0

Before you whip up a batch of fresh salsa for your Cinco De Mayo celebrations or decide to pop a Cracker-Crust Tomato Pie in the oven, you may want to check the label on your recent tomato purchase.

On May 2, Ray & Mascari, Inc. announced a recall of Four-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in plastic clamshell containers due to the potential of the tomatoes being contaminated with Salmonella.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recalled tomatoes were sold by Gordon Food Service stores in Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee, along with seven other states outside the South.

The tomatoes originally came from Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, who notified Ray & Mascari, Inc. that the produce they had received and repacked could have come into contact with Salmonella in the Hanshaw & Capling Farms facility. According to the recall, all distribution customers who received the recalled tomatoes “have been notified and provided information to further contact their customers and distribution centers with recall instructions.”

If you recently purchased vine-ripened tomatoes in plastic clamshell packaging, here’s what to look for on the label:

  • Packed by Ray & Mascari, Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204
  • 20 oz. (1 lb. 4 oz) 567g package
  • UPC code of 7 96553 20062 1
Credit:

U.S. Food and Drug Association

The master case (a cardboard produce box with a lid) contains 12 four-count containers with a lot number of RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B.

If you have purchased the recalled tomatoes, Ray & Mascari, Inc. urges customers to throw away and not consume. Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in those with weakened immune systems and severe symptoms in others. So far, there have not been any illnesses reported with this recall to date. (Let’s keep it that way!)

If you’re worried about your recent tomato purchase, opt for individual tomatoes at your local grocer or choose early-season tomatoes from your farmers’ market. Tomatoes begin to show up in full bounty come late May and June, meaning that you’ll have heirlooms on your counter soon enough. Of course, you could also plant a few seedlings yourself.

The child’s mother, Thays Brandão, told Brazilian news G1 on Monday that she still doesn’t know what led to her daughter’s death.

“The doctors still haven’t said what really happened to my daughter and what killed her. It’s a question mark,” she explained, noting that her daughter had “two to three” cardiac arrests per day.

“She had 13 arrests in total. She had never had that before. There was one day when she had seven respiratory arrests. Sometimes they gave her massages and other times they gave her shocks [with a device called a defibrillator].”

The outlet reported that doctors initially thought Millena was suffering from dengue fever. However, that was later ruled out.

After tests, the doctors then identified that the young girl had a urinary tract infection. The health professionals also believe she had a suspected brain tumor, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Thays told G1 that as Millena did not wake up and her condition did not improve, she and her husband made the difficult but necessary decision given their daughter’s irreversible condition.

“I said that if we were to let her little heart stop beating on its own, we would suffer more, and so would she. And we asked for the machines to be turned off,” she shared.

Scheifele remains out for Jets in Game 7 against Blues

0

WINNIPEG — Mark Scheifele did not play for the Winnipeg Jets against the St. Louis Blues in Game 7 of the Western Conference First Round at Canada Life Centre on Sunday.

The center was initially labeled a game-time decision after he skated on his own on Saturday morning, while wearing a tracksuit, after an undisclosed injury forced him to miss a 5-2 loss in Game 6 at St. Louis on Friday that tied the best-of-7 series 3-3.

The 32-year-old took the brunt of several collisions in the first period of Winnipeg’s 5-3 win in Game 5 on Wednesday, including one from Blues captain Brayden Schenn along the boards at 6:12, when Schenn was called for interference, and another open ice hit from forward Radek Faksa at the St. Louis blue line at 17:02. Scheifele remained in the game for the remainder of the period, playing 8:05 with one assist, but did not return for the second period.

Jets coach Scott Arniel ruled Scheifele out for Game 6 before the team traveled to St. Louis on Thursday.

“That’s just the challenge that we’ve run into all year long,” Arniel said after the morning skate Sunday. We’ve run into it all this series without ‘Gabe’ (Gabriel Vilardi, who came back in Game 5) and ‘Nik’ (Nikolaj Ehlers, who returned for Game 6). We’ve done it all year long and that’s just part of our group that knows that they have to step up, next guy has to step up. Whether that’s more opportunity, more ice time, take advantage of it. Do what you can.”

Scheifele was second in scoring for Winnipeg during the regular season with 87 points (39 goals, 48 assists) in 82 games, trailing only forward Kyle Connor’s 97 points (41 goals, 56 assists) to lead the Jets, who won the Presidents’ Trophy with the best record in the NHL (56-22-4).

The home team has won every game of this series; this will be the first Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 7 held in Winnipeg.

It will be the second time the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers have reached a Game 7; Winnipeg defeated the Nashville Predators 5-1 in Game 7 of the 2018 second round.

“I just feel we’ve been really solid all year at home,” Jets defenseman Dylan Samberg said. “We know that and we’re comfortable playing here and the crowd really helps as well. I think we just have to use that home-ice advantage to our advantage and just make sure we stick to the simple details and try not to waver.

“It all comes down to one game, so just making sure we put our best foot forward and leaving it all out there on the ice. There’s going to be a lot of energy out there and it’s going to be exciting. Just making sure we channel that the right way.”

Expanded Tomato Recall Now Includes 3 Producers in Over 14 States

0

More fresh tomatoes are being recalled due to concerns of potential Salmonella contamination, according to a release by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The new recall, for four packs of tomatoes produced by Ray and Mascari, Inc., affects 11 different states, and joins a previous recall that affected fresh tomatoes available in three other states.

The newly recalled tomatoes are produced by Ray and Mascari, Inc. They are labeled 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in plastic clamshell containers [20 oz. (1 lb. 4 oz) 567g] with UPC# 7 96553 20062 1. The master case label features Lot# RM250424 15250B or Lot# RM250427 15250B.

U.S. Food & Drug Administration

The tomatoes were sold in Gordon Food Service Stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The previous recall, affecting tomatoes in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, was for Williams Farms Repack, LLC and H&C Farms Tomatoes, all with lot codes R4467 or R4470.

If you have tomatoes that are part of either recall, you should not eat them and throw them away—or return them to the store you bought them from for a full refund. If you have questions about the Ray and Mascari recall or need to report an illness, you can contact them at 1-317-637-0234, Monday through Saturday between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST. For the Williams Farms Repack and H&C Farms recall, you can call company contact Jason Breland at 843-866-7707 or 843-599-5154 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in conjunction with either recall. But Salmonella is a potentially dangerous bacteria that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, it can enter your bloodstream and cause infections of the arteries and the heart, and potentially cause death—especially for the young, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, the FDA says.

Avalanche eliminated from playoffs due to Rantanen’s performance, special teams

0

The Colorado Avalanche were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Dallas Stars with a 4-2 loss in Game 7 of the Western Conference First Round on Saturday. It was the second time in as many seasons they lost to the Stars after a six-game, second-round loss in 2024.

The Avalanche (49-29-4) made the playoffs as the third-place team in the Central Division. They have qualified for eight straight seasons but have won one series since winning the Stanley Cup in 2022.

The skinny

Potential unrestricted free agents: Jonathan Drouin, F; Joel Kiviranta, F; Brock Nelson, F; Jimmy Vesey, F; Erik Johnson, D; Ryan Lindgren, D; Tucker Poolman, D

Potential restricted free agents: Sam Malinski, D

Potential 2025 Draft picks: 2

Here are five reasons the Avalanche were eliminated:

1. Mikko Rantanen

The series came down to Game 7, and the difference-maker was Rantanen, the forward the Avalanche traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-team deal involving the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 24, only to have the Hurricanes flip him to the Stars before the NHL Trade Deadline on March 7.

Colorado led 2-0 in the third period when Rantanen exploded for three goals and an assist, becoming the first player in playoff history with a third-period hat trick in a Game 7.

After Rantanen had one assist in the first four games, he had 11 points (five goals, six assists) in the last three to take the playoff lead with 12 goals (five goals, seven assists). Tied for second? Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (seven goals, four assists) and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (two goals, nine assists) with 11 points each.

Stars coach Pete DeBoer said Rantanen was “a motivated guy to make an impact in this series, and he just got better and better.”

2. Special teams

Colorado went 3-for-22 on the power play (13.6 percent) and 16-for-23 on the penalty kill (69.6 percent) in the series.

The special teams didn’t come through at key times.

In Games 2 and 3, the Avalanche had a power play late in the third that carried into overtime. In Game 3, after the penalty kill allowed the tying goal to Jamie Benn at 9:18 of the third, the power play had a four-minute man-advantage. Each time, Colorado failed to score and lost in OT — 4-3 in Game 3, 2-1 in Game 4.

In Game 5, the Avalanche pulled within 3-2 on MacKinnon’s goal at 14:38 of the second. Wyatt Johnston scored on the power play 2:10 later that gave the Stars a 4-2 lead en route to a 6-2 win.

In Game 7, they failed to score during a four-minute man-advantage in the first and gave up Johnston’s game-winner on the power play with 3:56 to go in the third.

3. Failure to cash in on opportunities

The Avalanche had 57.3 percent of the 5-on-5 shot attempts in the series. At times, they tilted the ice, but didn’t finish enough.

Among the missed opportunities: At 3:21 of OT in Game 3, one second after a four-minute power play ended, forward Artturi Lehkonen had a shot attempt at an open net that was blocked by Stars defenseman Esa Lindell. Tyler Seguin scored the winner 2:10 later.

Cale Makar had 26 shots on goal, second in the playoffs behind MacKinnon’s 39 and first among defensemen. He had five points (one goal, four assists), tied for third in the playoffs at his position, but that fell short of his extremely high standard.

4. Failure to hold third period leads

Three times, the Avalanche led in the third period and lost.

In Game 2, they led 3-2 before Evgenii Dadonov scored at 10:13 of the third to tie it 3-3. In Game 3, they led 1-0 until Benn scored on the power play at 9:18 of the third to tie it 1-1. Each time, that led to the power-play and OT failures.

In Game 7, they led 2-0 before Rantanen took over and sent them home.

5. Goaltending

Mackenzie Blackwood went 3-4 with a 2.71 goals-against average, .892 save percentage and one shutout. Stars goalie Jake Oettinger was 4-3 with a .285 GAA and .911 save percentage.

Blackwood was brilliant at times in his first playoff series. He stopped 22 of 23 shots in a 5-1 win in Game 1 and made 23 saves in a 4-0 win in Game 4.

In the end, Oettinger was tested more often and won the battle.

Blackwood will want the start of Game 5 back. Nine seconds into the first period, Johnston fired a puck from behind the goal line and banked it in off Blackwood. With 44.7 seconds left in the first, Stars defenseman Thomas Harley fired a puck that hit Blackwood’s blocker, popped high into the air, grazed the crossbar on the way down and dripped off his back into the net.

“The Last of Us” is back tonight, May 4 — but some of our favorite characters aren’t.

Fans are still reeling from the loss of Pedro Pascal’s Joel, who was shockingly killed in Episode 2 of the show’s second season.

In last week’s episode, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) vows to get revenge on the people who killed him. She and Dina (Isabela Merced) venture off.

Meanwhile, the show also introduces the Seraphites, a faction of people who worship someone called the prophet.

The world of “The Last of Us” is growing. Here’s how to watch Season 2, Episode 4.

What time does the new episode of ‘The Last of Us’ air?

“The Last of Us” Season 2, Episode 4 will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Where to watch ‘The Last of Us’

“The Last of Us” Season 2, Episode 4 will air live on HBO and drop on Max simultaneously for streaming.

How many episodes of ‘The Last of Us’ are left?

There are seven episodes this season. After tonight’s episode, there will be three episodes left.

What happened during Season 2, Episode 3 of ‘The Last of Us’?

The episode dealt, in part, with the fallout of Joel’s death.

Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Joel’s brother, sees his body and tells him to give Sarah, Joel’s daughter who died in the pilot episode, his love.

Ellie, meanwhile, wakes up in the hospital remembering Joel’s death at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).

She has an interaction with Gail (Catherine O’Hara), Jackson’s resident therapist, about curious words that Joel told Gail before he died: “I saved her,” he said.

Months later, a town hall meeting convenes to vote on Ellie’s proposal to avenge Joel’s death. They figured out that Washington Liberation Front (WLF), based in Seattle, was behind it. The council votes down Ellie’s proposal but she decides to go with Dina anyway.

On their way to Seattle, Ellie stops at Joel’s gravesite. They make it to Seattle by the end of the episode — and they also get a sense of their adversaries.

Audiences see a faction of the Seraphites, a religious group, at the beginning of the episode. Ellie and Dina pass by them later — and they’ve all been killed by the WLF.

Surely, a fight is ahead for Dina and Ellie

Adam Lambert to Play Judas in Hollywood Bowl ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

0

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is getting starrier. The three-night production of the classic Broadway musical that is set for the Hollywood Bowl this summer is adding Adam Lambert to the cast, as Judas.

He joins Cynthia Erivo, who was previously announced, in gender-blind casting, for the role of Jesus. The show’s pick for Mary Magdalene has not yet been revealed.

The announcement of Lambert arrives just one day before single tickets go on sale for the Bowl’s entire 2025 season of LA Phil-produced shows. Tickets for this and other Phil productions go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT, after package deals for multiple shows previously went up for grabs. A Lambert/Erivo teaming on one of the all-time great rock musicals seems likely to make “Jesus Christ Superstar” one of the season’s quicker sellouts.

Of course, even without Judas getting his name in the title, that character is arguably the lead, if there is one, in the show, which put composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice on the musical theater map for good.

Lambert will be coming to Hollywood not too long after he wrapped up a celebrated six-month stint in the ongoing Broadway revival of “Cabaret” (or “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” as it’s been retitled for the current production). (Read Variety’s recent interview with Lambert about taking on the role of the Emcee in New York here.)

As previously announced, the Bowl’s three-night “Superstar” stand is being directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, and it will be conducted and music-directed by Tony and Grammy winner Stephen Oremus (who worked on both the Broadway and film versions of “Wicked”). The show is being produced in association with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt.

The ”Superstar” production follows in an annual tradition the Bowl has of doing a fully staged version of a famous musical with name leads for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it run. The latest announcement for the show reaffirms that this will be a “staged” production and not a pure concert rendition. At the same time, though, there’s a promise that the show is “returning to its rock roots,” a reference to how “Jesus Christ Superstar” had its very first incarnation as a 1970 rock concept album before it got produced on Broadway in 1971, then became a 1973 movie.
