Big Blow for Gujarat Titans; Key Overseas Star Could miss IPL 2025 Playoffs

0

The Gujarat Titans (GT) are in a strong position to secure a playoffs spot in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). However, they could be without the services of a key overseas star as they head into the business end of the tournament.

GT’s big-hitting all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford could be a big name missing from the roster. This is because he was named in the West Indies squad set to tour England and Ireland, set to start later in May.

Specifically, the Ireland ODIs is slated to begin from May 21 where whereas the IPL 2025 playoffs kickstart from May 20 with the final scheduled for May 25. After the Ireland ODIs, the Windies team will travel to England for three more ODIs between May 29 and June 3, beginning at Edgbaston.

Sherfane Rutherford form in IPL 2025

Speaking about Rutherford’s form, he has looked in the decent touch in the GT middle-order, smashing 201 runs in seven innings, averaging at 40.20 while hitting at a strike rate of 155.81.

Sherfane Rutherford’s best knock was a power-packed 46 off 28 balls in a match against the Punjab Kings.

The Shubman Gill-led side are currently placed fourth in the IPL 2025 points table with seven wins from 10 games and 14 points. A couple of wins can also guarantee them a top-two finish, which could give them two chances at qualifying for the final.

GT are currently playing Mumbai Indians (MI) tonight (May 6), and will have three more matches left against Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 11, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 14 and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 18.

MI vs GT, IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians replaces Corbin Bosch with Ashwani Kumar using concussion sub

0

Mumbai Indians used a concussion substitution to replace Corbin Bosch with Ashwani Kumar during an IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.

South African all-rounder Bosch suffered a blow to his helmet while batting, during the 20th over of the 1st innings, bowled by Titans quick Praisdh Krishna.

Bosch scored an important 22-ball 27, including two sixes in the final over, to help Mumbai Indians cross 150.

Left-arm pacer Ashwani was introduced in the 10th over of the 2nd innings, making him the first concussion sub of the IPL 2025 season.

Ashwani made an impact in his second over where he removed a well-set Jos Buttler for 30 off 27 balls. He finished with the figures of two for 28 in four overs.

Vinay Prasad to run key FDA division that oversees vaccines

0

WASHINGTON — Vinay Prasad, an academic and fierce critic of the medical mainstream, will be the next director of the Food and Drug Administration center that oversees the regulation of vaccines, gene therapies, and the blood supply.

Prasad, previously an epidemiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco, has sharply criticized the FDA in the past, including the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, the unit he will now lead. After reports of his appointment, the S&P Biotech ETF extended losses, tumbling more than 6%.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary informed staff of the hire in a Tuesday email obtained by STAT, and later announced it in a post on social media site X. Prasad replaces former CBER director Peter Marks, who was forced to resign by health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in March.

Inter Milan stuns Barcelona, reaches UEFA Champions League final

0

play

Inter Milan advanced to the 2025 UEFA Champions League final, eliminating Barcelona with a 7-6 aggregate victory in one of the wildest ties in recent history.

Entering the second leg tied 3-3, Inter Milan scored twice in the first half to push their aggregate advantage to 5-3 by halftime. Barcelona responded quickly after the break, scoring two goals in seven minutes to even the tie again. In the 87th minute, Barcelona’s Raphinha scored the go-ahead goal and it looked like the Spanish giants would go through with a 6-5 aggregate win – but Francesco Acerbi tied it up in stoppage time to force an extra 30 minutes.

Davide Frattesi’s goal less than 10 minutes into extra time restored Milan’s lead and Inter managed to hold on at the San Siro for the 7-6 aggregate victory.

“They gave me everything they had,” Inter manager Simone Inzaghi told Sky Sport. “It is only right that they enjoy the success in this stadium.”

Inter Milan is in the Champions League final for the second time in three years after losing to Manchester City in 2023. The Italian club will face Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Munich on May 31.

Here’s how the match unfolded:

The 2025 Champions League final is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Nine minutes into extra time, Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi scored past Szczęsny, giving his team 7-6 aggregate lead. It’s been a stunning turn of events at the San Siro.

Just when it looked like Barcelona had secured their place in the final with a go-ahead goal in 87th minute, defender Francesco Acerbi found the back of the net in the 93rd minute to make it 6-6 on aggregate and force the semifinal to extra time.

In the 87th minute, Barcelona’s Raphina got his own rebound and fired a rocket to beat Yann Sommer at his far post, completing the comeback by giving the Spanish giants a 6-5 aggregate lead.

Inter Milan led 2-0 in the first leg (3-3 draw) and 2-0 on Tuesday. coughing up three Barcelona goals in the second half to cough up the advantage they needed to just hold for 45 minutes.

Barcelona and Inter Milan are tied 5-5 on aggregate in the 80th minute, and if things stay all square after 90 minutes, the match goes into 30 minutes of extra-time with two 15-minute halves.

If the match is still tied after 120 minutes, a penalty shootout will decide which team advances to the Champions League final.

This thrilling Champions League semifinal is all tied up again, with Barcelona’s Dani Olmo scoring a header in the 60th minute, erasing Inter Milan’s two-goal lead in just seven minutes. Olmo got on the end of an absolutely perfect cross from Gerard Martín, who had assisted on Barcelona’s first goal.

Barcelona defender Eric Garcia was an unlikely goalscorer in the 54th minute, smashing home a volley to cut Inter Milan’s two-goal advantage in half. Minutes later, Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a stunning save on a Barcelona counterattack, denying Garcia a second goal with on an opportunity the right back should have converted.

After VAR awarded a penalty to Inter Milan right before halftime, Hakan Çalhanoglu stepped up and sent Barcelona goalkeeper the wrong way Wojciech Szczęsny with a perfect spot kick – giving the Italians a two-goal advantage to hold for the last 45 minutes.

With a nice assist from Denzel Dumfries, Inter’s Lautaro Martínez scored the game’s opening goal in the 21st minute.

Entering the second leg tied 3-3 on aggregate, Barcelona and Inter Milan have gotten started at the San Siro, with 90 minutes (plus extra time) separating one of the teams from the 2025 Champions League final.

Barcelona: Szczęsny; Martin, Iñigo, Cubarsí, Eric; Pedri, De Jong, Olmo; Raphinha, Ferran, Lamine.

Inter Milan: Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; L. Martínez, Thuram

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti promised his team will put up a good fight against LaLiga leaders Barcelona at the “El Clasico” next Sunday, as the defending champions look to reduce a four-point gap with their arch-rivals.

Defending champions Real secured a 3-2 win over Celta Vigo on Sunday to keep their title dream alive going into the last four matches in the campaign. Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 15 league games, and beat Real 3-2 after extra time to win the Copa del Rey last weekend.

“We’re going to prepare well, we’re going to put up a good fight,” Ancelotti said in a post-match press conference. “It’s not going to be decisive but it’s almost there.”

Lamine Yamal causes headaches for Inter Milan

Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni called on his team to pull out all the stops in their bid to contain Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. The prodigious 17-year-old Yamal wowed the crowd at Montjuic with a sublime goal and a bold performance, helping Barcelona twice fight back to secure a gripping 3-3 draw in the first leg.

Bastoni, the 25-year-old centre back, who faced Yamal during last year’s European Championship where Spain beat Italy 1-0, expressed admiration for the teenager’s rapid progression.

“I had already faced him with Spain and he was not yet at this level,” Bastoni told a press conference on Monday. “I was impressed by the level he reached, for his age and ability to create incredible things on the pitch, I think he is among the best in the world right now. We’ll have to double, maybe triple (mark) him like we did at times in the first leg, but without exaggerating, otherwise we would create too many spaces. Barcelona is not just Yamal.”

Tomatoes recalled in 14 states due to salmonella risk: What to know

0

Tomatoes sold in 14 U.S. states have been recalled over concerns of possible salmonella contamination.

Two different companies that used the same supplier issued the recalls, which were each published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Here’s what to know:

Tomato recall over salmonella risk

Ray & Mascari Inc., based out of Indianapolis, Indiana, recalled 4-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in clamshell containers, according to an FDA notice dated May 3. and sold by Gordon Food Service Stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

In addition, Williams Farms Repack LLC recalled tomatoes sold to wholesalers and distributors between April 23 and 28 in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Ray & Mascari Inc. was notified by Hanshaw & Capling Farms (H&C Farms) of Immokalee, Florida, of the possible presence of salmonella in their facility, according to the FDA notice. The Williams Farms Repack tomatoes also came from H&C Farms and were recalled as a result of possible contamination.

Why you should care:

Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections in the United States every year, and recent outbreaks have been tied to sources such as cucumbers, eggs, unpasteurized milk, fresh basil, and most recently, backyard chickens.

Most people infected with salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after swallowing the bacteria – developing common symptoms like diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The illness, salmonellosis, usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment, according to the FDA.

However, some people at risk can become seriously ill, including babies and children under 5, adults 65 and older, and those with a weakened immune system.

What you can do:

Consumers who have purchased the recalled tomatoes are urged not to consume them and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund – or discard them.

LIV Golf star with $166million earnings receives surprise late Major invite to keep streak alive

0

Dustin Johnson’s Masters’ exemption has kept him in Major fields since his victory at Augusta in 2020.

The former world No.1 hasn’t missed one of the four premier events since 2017 but as of Rory McIlroy’s triumph in Augusta, he no longer has a guaranteed entry.

Johnson’s form has slumped in LIV Golf this year and he didn’t even come close to earning another exemption at The Masters as he failed to make the weekend with two rounds in the 70s.

With LIV Golf events still not recognised by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system, that put his eight-year Major run in serious jeopardy ahead of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

But Johnson, who boasts career earnings of around $166million, has reportedly been handed a special invitation to play, per Flushing It.

The two-time Major winner — who has finished runner-up twice in the tournament — has only cracked the top five once in LIV this season.

Fans were not pleased at the 40-year-old’s inclusion.

“Doesn’t deserve it… earn it with good play,” wrote one.

“A mercy invite,” added another.

“Field filler, will be a non factor if he even makes the cut,” insisted a third.

With David Puig revealing on Instagram that he had also been granted an exemption, there seems to be a concerted push to include LIV stars in the Championship.

Despite his struggles, Johnson insists his game is far off.

“I’m playing better than I scored for sure. Didn’t score very well,” he said after his second round at Augusta.

“Yeah, tough finish there. Played pretty solid all day until the last two holes. Golf is a funny game, as I did today, shooting one over. You play the same round and shoot four, five under.

“Just a couple of putts here and there drop and gives you a little momentum, a little confidence, [and] it’s a different day.”

In two LIV outings since The Masters, Johnson has finished in ties for seventh and 34th.

The last Major he failed to play in was at Augusta in 2017 when he was forced to pull out after slipping in his rental home before the tournament.

Masters champion McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, who is coming in off the back of a PGA Tour record score of 31-under, are the joint-favorites ahead of LIV superstar Bryson DeChambeau.

Where Will XRP Be in 5 Years?

0

In January 2025, XRP (XRP 8.86%) was one of the hottest cryptocurrencies on the planet. At one point, XRP was up nearly 600% after the 2024 presidential election, and the chart for XRP was wonderfully, beautifully parabolic.

But it’s been a tougher slog of late. For the year, XRP is up a modest 6% and has traded within a relatively narrow band around the $2 price level since March. Where is XRP headed next? Is more explosive growth on the horizon? Let’s take a closer look.

Potential catalysts for XRP

The good news is that XRP’s regulatory problems appear to be behind it. For more than four years, the SEC has been trying to classify XRP as a “security.” However, given the pro-crypto approach of the Trump administration, the SEC has now backed away from its claims, and the legal battle against Ripple (the company behind the XRP token) has finally ended.

In theory, a resolution of this case opens the door for massive new expansion and growth at Ripple, especially within the U.S. market. That’s a big reason why the price of XRP skyrocketed in value after the 2024 election — investors were already beginning to price in the upside potential for XRP under a crypto-friendly administration.

Earlier in the year, XRP appeared to be a frontrunner as the next cryptocurrency to gain SEC approval for a new spot ETF. Only two other cryptocurrencies — Bitcoin and Ethereum — have spot ETFs, so XRP would be in some pretty exclusive company.

A new spot ETF would open the door for a much broader range of retail and institutional investors to buy XRP, helping to push up its price over time. However, given the current tariff uncertainty, it looks like the SEC won’t be approving any new spot ETFs until the end of 2025 at the earliest.

But even if the ETF catalyst doesn’t work out as planned, there are other potential catalysts. One of the most exciting of these involves stablecoins, which have become a $200 billion industry.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies that are pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar, and backed by cash and cash equivalents. They’re important because they are the bridge between the worlds of traditional finance (which needs physical dollars) and decentralized finance (which needs digital dollars).

Ripple has its own stablecoin

At the end of 2024, Ripple launched a stablecoin of its own called Ripple USD (RLUSD 0.03%). The thinking was that Ripple USD would help spur growth of the XRP payment network. Currently, the primary use case for XRP is making cheap, fast cross-border payments. However, if XRP has a companion stablecoin, Ripple can then start to offer all sorts of new financial products and services featuring XRP.

It all sounds great, but Ripple USD hasn’t grown quite as quickly as expected, so Ripple recently launched a $5 billion acquisition bid for Circle, the company behind the much bigger USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) stablecoin. That bid has now been rejected, but the current speculation is that Ripple could soon raise its bid to $20 billion for Circle. Stablecoins have become a big business, and Ripple wants to be part of it.

How high can XRP go?

If there’s any cryptocurrency that’s prone to wild, pie-in-the-sky forecasts, it’s XRP. It’s incredibly easy to find price forecasts for XRP above $10, and even above the $100 price mark. There are even some AI-powered predictions suggesting that XRP could skyrocket above $500 by 2050.

But let’s back up for a second. The all-time high for XRP is just $3.84, and that occurred in 2018. Yes, XRP came close to regaining that all-time high in January, but other than that, it has never come close. Take a look at a long-term chart for XRP — it’s fairly unremarkable, aside from the massive price spikes in 2018 and 2024.

For XRP to hit a price above $10 by 2030, it would likely require a massive surge in institutional adoption. And I mean massive. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, for example, has suggested the XRP payment network might eventually challenge SWIFT as the premier cross-border payment network in the world.

As Garlinghouse recently pointed out in a Fox Business interview, SWIFT is based on 50-year-old technology. So Ripple has the potential to offer faster, cheaper, and more reliable global payments using modern blockchain technology.

In the past, I’ve been skeptical about XRP, primarily due to all the regulatory drama swirling around it for so long. But if the regulatory shackles are truly off, then I’m much more bullish on XRP’s future growth prospects. Just keep your expectations in check. If XRP doubles in price by 2030, I would take that as a win.

RCB Could Be Without Key Overseas Star For IPL 2025 Playoffs in Fresh Blow

0

RCB are currently the table toppers and one of the favourites to secure a playoff spot.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are currently the table toppers and one of the favourites to secure a playoff spot in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025).

However, the Rajat Patidar-side can face a fresh blow as they head into the business end of the tournament due to the unavailability of a key overseas star.

Star all-rounder Romario Shepherd, who recently slammed the second-fastest fifty in IPL history, has been named in the 15-member West Indies ODI squad for their upcoming tour of England and Ireland.

Notably, the Ireland series, where the teams play three ODIs and as many T20Is, kickstart from May 21, which coincides with the IPL 2025 playoffs. The playoffs begin from May 20 with the summit clash slated for May 25.

If RCB makes it beyond the league stage and into the finals, they will have a big void in the size of Romario Shepherd.

RCB form in IPL 2025

Chasing the elusive maiden IPL title, RCB looks like a team on a mission as they currently dominate the IPL 2025 standings. In 11 games played so far, the Bengaluru outfit has racked up eight wins while losing only three games and sits atop with 16 points in their tally.

While they have more or less guaranteed a top-four berth, one more win can assure them a top-two finish as well, allowing them to get two attempts to book a place in the final.

RCB have three more matches left in the league phase, taking on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 9, followed by an encounter against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 13, before playing their final league match on May 17 against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Is Aaron Judge the greatest right-handed hitter of modern times? Yankees star has a case

0

Do we understand what we’re watching?

That’s the question I ask myself when I watch Aaron Judge play baseball for those New York Yankees these days. We know he’s great, but do we understand he’s actually soaring miles beyond great?

At this point, he’s now stomping into the land of the all-time great. In fact …

He has probably earned himself a label we shouldn’t just toss around because it makes for fun Hot Take Theater. By which I mean I think he’s staking his claim to being …

The greatest right-handed hitter of modern times.

Hey, before you start typing your outraged comments, you should know that I’m all too happy to invite Henry Aaron, Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Rogers Hornsby, Hank Greenberg, Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Mike Schmidt, Mike Trout, Frank Robinson and the PED-clouded threesome of Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and Mark McGwire to the meetings of this club.

But now that I have all that out of the way, let me ask again: Do we understand what we’re watching?

Take a look at the numbers, friends. You may never see them again in your lifetime.

Over the first 34 games of this season … Judge slashed .423/.510/.777/1.287 with 11 home runs, a 261 Weighted Runs Created+ and a batting average higher than any other American League hitter’s on-base percentage. That seems good.

Over the last calendar year … Judge slashed .371/.496/1.283 with 64 home runs and a 252 wRC+. You know what we call a year like that? Ruthian. Literally.

Over the last four seasons … since the start of the 2022 season, Judge’s mind-blowing numbers look like this: .314/.439/.682/1.121 with 168 homers and a 207 wRC+.  So wait, that’s four seasons of averaging 60 home runs per 162 games and producing runs at a rate more than double the league average? That’s the kind of thing that elevates a guy to a neighborhood where only Cooperstown residents get to hang.

How did I get myself thinking about where he stands among the most gifted right-handed hitters of modern times? By looking at all that … and then blowing up everything else I was working on to see if I was onto something. I think I was! Take a look.

The greatest 450-game stretch we’ve ever seen

Judgian: He has a .314/.439/.682/1.121 slash line since 2022.  (Mike Stobe / Getty Images)

Since Opening Day 2022, Judge had actually played 455 games through Sunday. But just for convenience, I spent way too much time comparing his brilliance to the best 450-game stretches by all other right-handed American League/National League power hitters of the past 100 years.

(I dropped in a 120-homer minimum, which lopped off a few hitters you might want to toss into this argument. Not to mention Hornsby. But sorry! It’s my list.)

168 HR trots — Only two other right-handed hitters in the last century have hit as many home runs over a 450-game span as Judge. And it’s safe to say they bring their own asterisks. That would be Mark McGwire (199), between 1997 and 2000, and Sammy Sosa (who topped out at 175 in a stretch between 1998 and 2000). Foxx led the asterisk-free crowd for close to nine decades (with 154), but Judge has blown even him away.

A 207 wRC+ — Can you comprehend how ridiculous it is to produce runs at a rate 107 percent above league average for a stretch that has gone on for longer than three seasons?

Before Judge showed up, no right-handed hitter had crashed the 200 wRC+ threshold over any 450-game stretch since Hornsby — who did it before our 100-year cutoff. Since then, Foxx, DiMaggio and Miggy had made it into the 180s. And Mays, Pujols, McGwire, Ramirez and Trout had edged into the 170s.

But to average 207 over three-plus seasons? You know how many right-handed hitters have even had one season with a 207 wRC+ in the last century, according to FanGraphs? Exactly one. Aaron Judge (218, last season).

That slash line — Do you remember watching the last right-handed hitter to beat Judge’s .314/.439/.682/1.121 line over any span of games this long? If you’re under 95 years old, you’re just making stuff up. Because, according to Baseball Reference, nobody has done it since Foxx went .355/.456/.716/1.171 over a 450-game span between 1932-34.

Since then, there have been close calls — from Pujols, Miggy, Manny, Mays, DiMaggio and Greenberg. But here’s how hard it is to even approach Judge’s numbers in this day and age:

Only two current players can even top Judge’s batting average since Opening Day 2022. That’s three-time batting champ Luis Arraez (.326) and Freddie Freeman (.315) — who A) both hit left-handed and B) have many fewer home runs combined (103) than Judge has by himself (168).

So can I rest my case yet? If you want to change this debate to the best right-handed hitters over 12 years, or 15, or 20, then obviously, Judge can’t compete with that. But who has been better in his prime? I think I just proved exactly who was — and wasn’t.

Got it? Cool. Now let’s fire some other fun Judge facts and feats at you.

The Ruthian season that never was

I love the What-If Universe at times like this — because it allows me to ask stuff like:

What if Judge’s last calendar year had been an actual season? Where would it rank in baseball history? Let’s put it this way: Only Ruth would be able to relate to it. Take a look.

Imagine hitting .423, with a .510 on-base percentage, over your first 34 games of any season … while slugging over .700 … and blowing past double figures in home runs.

Here’s the complete list of men whose first 34 games put them in .400/.500/.700/10-homer territory, according to Baseball Reference: Ted Williams, 1957 … Jimmie Foxx, 1932 … Aaron Judge, 2025.

Judge had 50 hits on the board … before he even flipped his calendar to May. So is it safe to say he had himself an all-time month? Um, yes! Here’s how astonishing it was:

He had more hits in March/April (50) than Jose Altuve and Mookie Betts combined (49).

He reached base more times (73) than any active player has ever reached in any calendar “month,” except for Juan Soto in September/October 2021 (74).

Plus there was that .427 average and .521 OBP. Here’s the list of players who have ever had a “month” of .400./.500/10 HR+ and at least 73 times on base: Williams, Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle … and Judge. (Hat tip: Baseball Reference/Stathead)

He’s the biggest dude to ever do any of this

He’s built more like Karl-Anthony Towns than Rod Carew. But just suppose Judge goes on to win a batting title — at 6-foot-7, 282 pounds (according to the Yankees).

He’d be the tallest batting champ ever — because of course he would. The current record holders are Dave Parker, Derrek Lee and John Olerud, who were all listed at 6-5.

He’d be the thickest batting champ ever — and it wouldn’t even be close. If we go by official weight, the heaviest batting champ of all time was Frank Thomas at 240. Have I mentioned in the last two paragraphs that Judge is listed at 282? So he’s breaking the scales in more ways than one!

In other news

But also, through Sunday, you could say all this about Judge’s season:

• He had more multi-hit games (17) than one-hit games (13).

• He had more three-hit games (6) than zero-hit games (4). (Hat tip: Katie Sharp of Baseball Reference.)

• He had more singles (33) than Luis Arraez had hits (28).

• He hit .519 with runners in scoring position, with more than twice as many hits (14) as strikeouts (6).

• And as famed sabermetrician Cyril Morong reports, Judge had a higher batting average (.423) than any other American Leaguer’s on-base percentage. (George Springer was at .416.) Last hitter to pull that off over any full season? How ’bout Nap Lajoie … in 1901.

So what does greatness look like? It looks a lot like the biggest star on the New York Yankees.

Do you understand what you’re watching yet? You should by now. You’re welcome!
