In Match 56 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 6 (Tuesday), Ashwani Kumar became only the third concussion substitute in the tournament’s history.
The MI left-arm seamer was brought in as a substitute for South African fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who was hit on the helmet while batting in the first innings.
Bosch, who scored 27 off 22 deliveries, whacked Prasidh Krishna for consecutive sixes in the first two deliveries of the final over. The tall paceman, however, responded with a mean bouncer and hit Bosch on the helmet, leading to his concussion.
Bosch had a check-up with the physio and continued batting, but got run-out on the very next delivery. Thanks to his little cameo, MI got to 155/8 in their 20 overs. Earlier this season, Ashwani made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and registered figures of 4/24. He played two more games but leaked a lot of runs and was dropped from the XI.
Vishnu Vinod for Ishan Kishan (MI – IPL 2023) and Yudhvir Singh (LSG – IPL 2024) are the other two concussion substitutes in the IPL.

Todo por un partido, por detalles, por una jugada aislada que puede tirar por la borda todo el trabajo realizado, así de cruel, también glorioso, es este deporte.
Al optimismo desmesurado que reina en París en las horas previas del encuentro, barruntándose que, en caso de clasificación, habrá desplazamiento para celebrar el pase a la final en los Campos Elíseos, hay que añadirle que Ousmane Dembélé, duda el viernes para la contienda, se ha recuperado con celeridad de sus molestias en los isquiotibiales de la pierna derecha. El extremo, líder del PSG, máximo artillero del año, con 26 goles entre todas las competiciones, supone un subidón de adrenalina para el conjunto parisino, temeroso de que su mejor futbolista, el que ha asumido el liderazgo, el que se ha echado el equipo a la espalda en los momentos críticos, no pudiera llegar al envite en plenas condiciones.
Del resto, Luis Enrique no abriga ningún género de duda respecto a la alineación. Jugarán los once guerreros que ganaron en el Emirates, si Dembélé, finalmente, como así ha demostrado en las horas previas, está en plenas condiciones. El asturiano, aun así, no se fía del Arsenal, en plena crisis de resultados, salvo los dos triunfos contra el Real Madrid en los cuartos de final de la Champions League, que necesita dar un do de pecho en un escenario difícil, agobiante, el Parque de los Príncipes, que registrará un lleno hasta la bandera e intentará arreciar durante los 90 minutos al que, todavía, aunque el City le aprieta, es el segundo de la Premier League.

Batter Shimron Hetmyer has been left out of West Indies’ one-day international squad to play England and Ireland this month.
Left-hander Hetmyer, currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and one of West Indies’ most high-profile players, featured in the Windies’ 2-1 win over an understrength England last year.
He missed a series against Bangladesh that followed through illness and was replaced by 27-year-old Amir Jangoo, who made a debut century in the third match.
West Indies play a three-match one-day international series in Ireland from 21-25 May, before matches in England on 29 May, 1 June and 3 June.
Three T20s against England follow from 6 June.
It will be the first white-ball series for England since Harry Brook was named permanent white-ball captain.
There is no place in West Indies’ squad for Nicholas Pooran, who has not played an ODI since 2023.
The touring party is largely the same as the one that beat England, with batter Shai Hope captain, and Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph among the seam bowlers.
Former Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien will work with Hope’s side during the Ireland leg of the tour.
“These matches form a critical component towards the 2027 World Cup and there are signs of the team building consistency following the series sweep against Bangladesh and the win over England late last year,” said coach Darren Sammy.
“We expect the conditions to be challenging but we are creating a culture and mindset which emphasize playing the brand of cricket that is taking us closer to some of our overall objectives.”

A second earthquake hit just before 8 p.m. Saturday. That was followed by another event that occurred Sunday around 11:15 a.m. That earthquake registered 2.4, and was located in the same areas of southern New Mexico and west Texas. There have been no reports of damage from any of the earthquakes.
EL PASO, Texas (KCBD) – El Paso felt the shaking from a 5.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday night, part of a swarm of earthquakes that rocked the area near the Texas-New Mexico border.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quakes struck at 7:47 p.m. about 35 miles south of Whites City, New Mexico, roughly midway between Midland and El Paso. The quake occurred nearly four miles beneath the earth’s surface.
The region is sparsely populated, so few residents were affected, and no injuries were reported.
The “temblor” was part of a swarm of 46 mostly small earthquakes in the area since early April, USGS data indicates. The USGS says there is a 65% chance of a strong aftershock within a week.

It may have been the earthquake that hit near Farmville Tuesday afternoon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, or the USGS, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake struck just north of Farmville at 1:08 p.m. That magnitude was upgraded from an initial 2.8 measurement.

Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin is set to make his third major appearance at next week’s US PGA Championship.
McKibbin, 22, played in last year’s US Open and Open Championship, finishing tied 41st and tied 66th.
Earlier this year, the world number 115 opted to skip his debut season on the PGA Tour and instead joined Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII LIV Golf team.
McKibbin has earned two top-10s on the Saudi-backed tour and most recently finished 47th in South Korea.
The US PGA Championship takes place at Quail Hollow in North Carolina from 15-18 May.
American Xander Schauffele is the defending champion while McKibbin’s fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy will attempt to win back-to-back majors after his historic Masters triumph last month.
McKibbin and McIlroy will be part of a strong Irish contingent in Charlotte alongside Shane Lowry, Seamus Power and 2008 champion Padraig Harrington.
LIV Golf’s Dustin Johnson has been given a special invitation to compete in next week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the field unveiled on Tuesday for the year’s second major.
Winners of the past five Masters are eligible to play in the PGA Championship, which means former world No. 1 Johnson’s exemption from his 2020 triumph at Augusta National had run out.
But according to PGA Championship eligibility requirements, the PGA of America — which is the national governing body and organizer of the major — “reserves the right to invite additional players” who did not meet the other eligibility criteria.
Johnson missed the cut at last month’s Masters and has recorded two top-10 finishes in seven LIV Golf events so far this season. The two-time major winner, who finished runner-up at the PGA Championship in 2019 and 2020, will be one of 16 LIV members in the 156-player field next week.
Among the other LIV Golf players in the field are Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Cameron Smith and Joaquín Niemann.

In a rare instance in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) fielded 13 players in the playing XI after Karn Sharma came on as the impact sub, while Ashwini Kumar also bowled despite not being in the original playing XI.
Ashwini came on for Corbin Bosch, who batted in the first innings and played a crucial role in the the five-time champions putting a total of 155 on the board with a knock of 27 in 22 balls. Earlier, Karn came on the field instead of Rohit.
Why Mumbai Indians Are Allowed To Use 13 Players
Bosch suffered a nasty hit on the head during the 20th over of the MI innings which was bowled by Prasidh Krishna. While the South African all-rounder continued to bat before being run-out, the medical officials figured out he had a concussion. This allowed MI to make a concussion sub, which meant they used 13 players.
For those unversed, the concussion sub-rule was introduced across formats in both international and domestic cricket in 2019 to ensure players with head injuries are taken out of action to avoid any threat of long-term damange.
This is the third instance of a concussion sub in the IPL after Ishan Kishan (MI VS GT, IPL 2023) and Mohsin Khan (LSG vs KKR, IPL 2024). Both incidents happened after the impact player rule started, and saw the teams in question use 13 players. Mumbai are the first team to use 13 players and have a player ruled out due to concussion twice in IPL history.
Talking about the match, Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first. The home team’s batting unit collapsed despite Bosch’s heroics in the end and a 71-run partnership for the third wicket between Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav. Jacks scored his maiden IPL fifty.
