Victims of funeral home cremains case hold memorial for lost pets

0

Pet owners who say they are victims of funeral director Patrick Vereb gathered together at a memorial in Latrobe to share their collective pain and find healing in one another.

Everyone came with their own story of a pet they lost, who’d they thought they had the ashes of. Instead, they said their pets were among the thousands who prosecutors say were simply thrown out in a landfill.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my God, oh my God, he took my baby, and threw him away.’ It’s not right, how could somebody do that, how could somebody do that,” said one woman who spoke during the event.

Patty and Jason Patrick were grieving what happened to their dog, who came from an abusive family.

“[Vereb] threw him in a landfill, kind of like his life began, forgotten and abandoned, and it just tears my heart out,” Jason Patrick said.

Patty described her dog as their “cuddle buddy” as she fought cancer.

Patti Levay organized the event. She said she sent multiple deceased pets to Vereb’s Eternity Pet Memorial. He’s charged with eight counts of deceptive or fraudulent business practices plus other felonies.

“I live with the nightmares of my animals in landfills, being bulldozed over and over again, and hearing them scream in pain,” Levay said.

Father Justin Matro blessed many of the pets in attendance.

“The fact is, no matter what has happened with their own bodies, the love you have for those pets is a sign of their ongoing life with you,” Matro said.

Rather than close by releasing balloons, Levay said they blew bubbles, sending a message of love to their pets in heaven.

Florida State’s Norvell cheering on Lonni Alameda, FSU Softball

0

TAMPA — The Florida State softball team is once again shining in the postseason, beating Auburn 4-0 on Sunday to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals against Texas Tech.

About 200 miles south of Tallahassee, FSU football coach Mike Norvell was thinking about the softball team Sunday afternoon as he prepared to speak at the Tampa stop of his spring booster tour.

“Did they really? A triple play?’” Norvell asked, when getting an update on the Seminoles’ Regional championship game against Auburn.

Norvell and his family have been frequent visitors in the stands for Florida State softball games, and he was happy to hear Lonni Alameda’s club was leading 2-0 at the time, thanks in part to an inning-ending triple play in the fourth.

The Seminoles’ sixth-year football coach has been supportive of several other FSU programs, but he said Alameda, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, has been an inspiration to him and many others.

“She’s special. She’s an incredible human being,” Norvell said. “One of my favorite coaches I’ve ever interacted with. I’m a huge supporter of what they do and how they do it. … She’s an inspiration to everybody for the coach, the woman, just the person that she is.

“Impacting a community, a place, she’s changed so many lives throughout her leadership, and you know she’s definitely an inspiration to everybody watching this team and seeing how she’s embraced an extremely challenging situation.”

Since announcing her diagnosis in late March, Alameda has tried to keep the primary focus on her team and not her individual battle with cancer. But the softball community — both near and far — has rallied around her, wearing pink jerseys, stickers, patches and other gear in her honor.

Longtime Florida State apparel shop Garnet & Gold is also selling merchandise to benefit Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where Alameda is undergoing treatment.

Norvell said he appreciates how much the community, the university and Florida State’s athletics department have shown their support to the Seminoles’ softball coach.

“Right before they went out on the Cal trip, she came up to the office just to check in, and I mean it was a blessing for me just to be able to see her …,” Norvell said. “My family, we try to make it out to any game that we can. But seeing the success and the way that team’s rallied behind her, to see the strength that she has just going through and her presence.”

Next up for Florida State Softball is the Super Regionals with a berth in the Women’s College World Series on the line. Norvell said his football team will begin summer workouts in the next couple of weeks to prepare for the Aug. 30 season opener against Alabama.

Pet owners who used services of funeral director accused of mishandling remains gather for support

0

Rick and Terri Wagner traveled Sunday from their New Kensington home to Derry Township in search of closure.

Their beloved spanador, Bailey, a mix of a cocker spaniel and a Labrador, was one of the thousands of pets authorities say Patrick Vereb mishandled through his cremation business, Eternity Pet Memorial. They were among pet owners who came to a memorial service at the Kingston Veterans and Sportsmans Club organized by Patti Levay, founder of Guardian Angels Pug Rescue in Derry Township.

Bailey was 8 when he died from cancer in 2021. The Wagners are among those who have learned that their pets were not cremated, despite Vereb giving them a baggie of remains along with a letter and certificate.

“He was such a nice dog,” Terri Wagner said. “He’s been on our minds a lot since he passed away.”

The state attorney general charged Vereb, 70, of Hazelwood with deceptive business practices and theft by deception on April 28. He is accused of taking almost $660,000 from customers for pet cremations from 2021 to 2024 but instead disposing of them in landfills and giving their owners ashes that were not from their pets. A class-action lawsuit has also been filed in Allegheny County.

While his wife was devastated by the news, Rick Wagner said he was angry.

“I just can’t believe that someone can be that heartless,” Terri Wagner said.

Levay had 11 of her dogs go through Vereb from 2021 to 2024. She and other pet owners said what Vereb is accused of doing made them suffer the loss of their pets a second time.

“We don’t know what happened to our pets,” she said. “We have a good idea that they are in landfills as opposed to in our arms.”

Father Justin Matro, of Saint Bartholomew Parish in Crabtree, blesses Ruby, a dog belonging to Terri and Rick Wagner of New Kensington, during a memorial service in Derry Township on Sunday for pets involved in the Eternity Pet Memorial scandal. They were given ashes for their dog, Bailey, who the authorities have told them was not actually cremated.

Levay said she organized the memorial to bring together those who are suffering and can understand each other’s pain.

“We need healing,” she said. “I want to help them get past the hatred. I want them to get through their grief.”

Rick Shoemaker, owner of Shoemaker Funeral Home in Blairsville for over 50 years, spoke to the gathering about how pet cremations should be handled. He said he added pet cremation to his services five years ago because there was a need, and now does three or four per day, six days a week — always individually, never in groups.

Shoemaker said it’s all about trust, and that he’d be happy to show people around his crematorium so they can see what they do.

“It’s unfortunate that nobody checked into that guy to see what he was doing,” Shoemaker said. “I think people trust us to do the right thing.”

While state lawmakers are working on legislation in the wake of the Vereb case, Shoemaker isn’t sure how effective laws would be.

“You can make all the rules in the world. People will still find a way to cheat,” he said.

Tiffany Mantzouridis (left), credited with alerting authorities leading to criminal charges against Patrick Vereb, owner of Eternity Pet Memorial, speaks during a memorial service organized by Patti Levay (right), founder of Guardian Angels Pug Rescue, in Derry Township on Sunday.

Also at the memorial was Tiffany Mantzouridis, who worked as an intern for Vereb and is credited with alerting police. She was met with appreciation and applause.

“I’m so sorry we have to meet like this,” she said, describing herself as shy and, citing an ongoing investigation, saying there are things she could not say.

Jason Patrick and Patty McMichael of Unity believe the bag they thought contained the ashes of their dog, Wolfie, is actually sand.

“I’m glad she came forward or we would’ve never known,” McMichael said.

As much as she feels Vereb hurt her and the others, Levay said she doesn’t want to have hatred in her heart.

“I refuse to hate him,” she said. “I feel sorry for this man who has no empathy.”

For some, for now, getting past the hate is too much to ask.

“I want justice for my little girl and I’m going to fight until I get it,” said Heather Sphar of Charleroi, whose Yorkie, Trixie, died in April 2024. “I hope the guy rots in jail. I have a lot of hatred for this man.”

Judy Humphrey of Mt. Pleasant said her Shetland sheepdog, Cullen, could forgive Vereb, “But I could never. … There’s a lot of pain here.”

Humphrey said she intends to join the class-action lawsuit, and is hopeful that new laws are passed.

“It’s not about the money. It’s for the justice each of these precious animals deserve,” she said. “We will get that justice.”

Patrick said he plans to go to Vereb’s next court hearing to face him.

“I want him to know he can’t run from us,” he said. “We’re not going to go away quietly.”

Since his husky, Zaylee Aurora Hoke, died in March 2020, Wade Hoke of Greensburg has been saying goodnight to ashes that may not be her.

“How could somebody do that? They’ll do anything for money,” he said. “I hope they do something bad to that guy.”

Sherry Roland, of Homer City, releases bubbles as she and others whose pets are involved in the Eternity Pet Memorial scandal conclude a memorial service in Derry on Sunday.

The service ended with those attending gathering in a circle as they blew bubbles and said their pets’ names aloud, saying hello to them in heaven.

For owners who don’t want to keep the remains they were given by Vereb, Levay said she’d take and bury them with dignity. But many said they will keep and honor them just the same.

That includes Sherry Roland of Homer City who knows that neither of her dogs, AnnieGrace and MollyBelle, were actually cremated. She keeps the ashes on a memorial table with a light that comes on every night.

“Whether they’re mine or someone else’s, they’ll be loved and cherished,” she said.

UConn stars front and center for new-look CT Sun

0

UNCASVILLE — The Connecticut Sun held the lead for more than 34 minutes, then Stefanie Dolson launched a 25-foot to put Washington ahead for the first time.

The 5:38 that followed did not go well for the Sun, and who had Dolson, the former UConn center checking back in to a dagger 3-pointer on their bingo card? Maybe it figured, on a day with four generations of Huskies front-court stars in Mohegan Sun Arena, a living timeline, that one of them would hit a big shot.

It’s just that on the Sun side, there was the gold standard, Tina Charles, holding back the clock and turning in a terrific game and Olivia Nelson-Ododa, starting alongside her, showing signs of a breakout in the 90-85 loss.

Connecticut Sun blow late lead after promising start in 90-85 loss to Washington Mystics

“We played against each other in the (FIBA) AmeriCup,” Charles said, “she was much quieter, known as a defensive presence, then, fast-forward to playing against her when we were in China, it was just great to see her growth. I remember texting C.D. (Chris Dailey) right away and saying, ‘Liv has really gotten better.’”

Charles, 36, was at UConn from 2007-10, responding to the challenges from Geno Auriemma and C.D. to become a dominant force on national championship teams and reaching the Huskies of Honor before she left.

In the years since, she has played for the Sun, Liberty, Mystics, Dream and now back with the Sun, and all over the world. Now, her career full circle, she embracing a mentor’s role. Over the years, she’s been back at UConn to occasionally help fire up and toughen up the centers and forwards that came after her, like Dolson, 2010-14, Nelson-Ododa, 2018-22 and Aaliyah Edwards (2020-24), now with the Mystics, but missing this game with a back injury.

So former Huskies were everywhere. Guard Bria Harley, out of The W for three years, came off the bench to score 11 in her first game, pretty impressive for someone who joined the team just this week. Everything was working nicely for the currently Connecticut-based Sun and new coach Rachid Meziane’s Euro-style system. The Sun started out with a 14-2 spurt and led by 15 before Washington worked its way back in the game and took control of what most of the 7,834 in the arena hope will not prove to be the last season-opener they get to see.

For most of the game Charles and Nelson-Ododa, 24, were side by side, fueling the fast start — and what a thing. Charles had 23 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, showing every indication she is not just a mentor, but still a major player in 2025. For her teammates, Nelson-Ododa in particular, she is a future Hall of Famer with lots to share.

“It’s been an incredible experience,” Nelson-Ododa said. “Her insight is so valuable. The way she sees the game, what she’s accomplished over time, to be able to pick her brain, it’s huge. And she is so willing to share that information with us younger players, whether it’s before practice, or one-on-one, teaching little things, just giving us pieces of her game. I couldn’t ask for a better vet.”

Dom Amore: CT Sun departure would be sad, but WNBA’s growth may make it inevitable

Nelson-Ododa, who had 18 points and eight rebounds, a plus-seven for the game, started her pro journey in Los Angeles, coming back to Connecticut via trade two years ago. She had primarily a bench role for the Sun, who made the semifinals both years and were laden with stars. This is her opportunity to step up into a more prominent role, and the quiet ONO is disappearing in favor of this, more animated  and aggressive version.

“Coming into this training camp, just her assertiveness,” Charles said. “She actually makes me better. She’s going to attack me, go at me, she wants the challenge. Even before practice, being able to work with her, I see a lot of myself in her at that age, just wanting t get better. It’s been great to be along side her, just to see the growth of this next generation.”

Charles and Nelson-Ododa played together in the AmeriCup in Puerto Rico in 2019, in which the U.S. team defeated Canada for the title, as Sylvia Fowles was the MVP. Charles has played for three teams in China between 2015 and 24, crossing paths with Nelson-Ododa in 2023-24.

Dolson started, jumped center with Nelson-Ododa, who won the tap. But she worked with foul-trouble in a physical game, and that big three represented her only points, giving the Mystics a 75-74 lead. The Mystics figure to be a contending team, to only get better when Edwards, the fifth pick in the 2024 draft, gets on the court.

The Sun are a work in progress, as expected, and they don’t yet have their two first-round picks, Aneesah Morrow and Saniya Rivers, on the court. Meziane has some things to figure out, but the Charles and Nelson-Ododa combination looks like part of a solution, as a match-up problem for The W. They were a combined 13 for 23, including 7 for 8 in the first half with seven offensive boards. For them, and the Sun, who play Las Vegas at home on Tuesday night, it’s a matter of sustaining it for the full 40 minutes.

“Hopefully we have something positive to say,” Meziane said. “Tina, I felt, had a good game, I like what she brought today, I like what Olivia brought today as well, offensively and defensively. Maybe they can help our young players get better from it.”

Angels would be wise to capitalize on MLB landscape and deal surging starter now

0

When it comes to Angels pitching, it’s hard to find many positives at this early juncture. Yusei Kikuchi has been less ace and more mid-rotation starter. Jose Soriano has been very up and down. Jack Kochanowicz may have won the fifth starter spot, but how long he’ll hold on to it is an open question. Kyle Hendricks has more or less looked cooked. Meanwhile, the bullpen has provided the struggling rotation no support.

Perhaps lost in the shuffle of mediocrity has been the performance of Tyler Anderson. While most everyone has struggled, the crafty lefty has shone through his first seven starts, posting a 2.68 ERA over 40.1 innings pitched.

The strong start to 2025 is the latest development in a late-career blossoming for the 35-year-old. Anderson didn’t debut until he turned 26, and through his first five seasons, he struggled to take the mound consistently and perform, topping 30 starts just twice and posting an ERA under 4.00 just once, coming in his rookie year.

Since then, however, Anderson has been an All-Star two of the last three seasons and looks to be on his way to another selection this year. A free agent at the end of the season, he’s also been a popular name in trade rumors dating back to last year’s trade deadline.

Whispers again have started to grow that Anderson could be a prime trade candidate once again at this year’s deadline, with projections as to possible landing spots starting to pop up just before the start of this season.

The Angels would be wise to trade Tyler Anderson well before the trade deadline

A case has been made that teams should start making deals earlier in the season, especially if their status as a contender or pretender is solidified. While in some cases, that might mean waving the white flag as a proposed Jorge Soler trade would suggest, moving Anderson would just be a smart baseball decision.

For starters, Anderson likely won’t be re-signed, so unlike Soler, the Angels have to move him in order to get anything of value in return. But why move him now rather than in July, when most trades of consequence are made?

The answer to that question has to do with the landscape around the league, as well as Anderson’s own recent history.

Multiple teams with World Series aspirations have sustained significant injuries to their rotations. The crosstown Dodgers have been decimated at the top of their rotation with Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow hitting the injured list for the foreseeable future.

The New York Yankees lost ace Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery in spring training, and have also seen the likes of last year’s AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, and Marcus Stroman miss time with injury while their rotation has been held together with duct tape, and until recently, Carlos Carrasco.

The Chicago Cubs lost ace Justin Steele for the season, and now will also be without Shota Imanaga for a while. The New York Mets have made it work with the likes of Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill turning in unexpected performances, but have been without key free-agent signees Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas all season.

All of those teams understand that games won in May and June are just as important as those won in August and September if they want to reach the mountain top at the end of October. After all, you can’t dance without an invitation, and competition in those divisions can be fierce.

Meanwhile, Tyler Anderson’s recent track record may indicate that he may be in for a second-half swoon. Last season, the veteran posted a sparkling 2.97 ERA in the first half, and then pitched to a horrifying 5.43 mark down the stretch.

By moving Anderson now, the Angels would capitalize on his value and take advantage of some panicked contenders who may be willing to overpay. Some of those teams may have their eyes on bigger prizes come the end of July, but for now would also benefit greatly from the stability that Anderson can provide in the middle of a rotation.

If Perry Minasian is smart, he should be on the phone constantly, trying to play these clubs off each other and hoping that one makes an emotional decision and delivers an overpay. Typically, the market heats up at the peak of summer, but for Anderson, the hottest chase for his services could be now.

The time has come for NFL to exercise oversight of schedule-release videos

0

It’s one thing for the Falcons to potentially piss off an eight-figure sponsor by mentioning a competitor’s product when explaining (unconvincingly) the chain of events that resulted in an in-draft prank phone call to Shedeur Sanders. It’s another for the Colts to clumsily infringe on that same sponsor’s IP rights in producing and publishing its schedule-release video.

The embarrassing failure of a multi-billion-dollar organization to realize that it needed Microsoft’s permission to use copyrights associated with Minecraft underscores an important reality for a sports league that prides itself on having its act together: Some of the dysfunctional things that dysfunctional teams do can impact the entire operation.

As noted on Thursday by Margaret Fleming of FrontOfficeSports.com, the NFL does not require teams to submit their schedule-release videos for approval. Given the various ways in which the NFL exercises active oversight with its teams (starting with the approval of every single player contract a team executes), why wouldn’t the league want to have the ability to give a thumb’s down to each of the various teams’ videos that flood social media the instant the schedule is released?

If someone from the league office had looked at the Colts’ video, the video never would have been posted without all t’s being crossed and i’s being dotted with Microsoft. And if someone from the league office had reviewed the Patriots’ video, which features 345 Park Avenue persona non grata Dave Portnoy, there would be no lingering questions as to whether the NFL has done an about-face on its 10-year shunning of Portnoy.

It’s a fairly simple project. Someone from the legal department and someone from the P.R. department watches every video before it goes live. The investment of time and effort would go a long way toward preventing one of the 32 teams from clumsily wandering into a minefield and throwing shrapnel toward Big Shield.

The fact that the league doesn’t already require approval of the schedule-release videos is surprising. The fact that the Colts had to scrap their entire video after it was already posted puts the league at large on notice of the importance of being involved.

Which sets the stage for the league finding itself on the wrong side of a negligence claim, if/when one of these videos ends up getting the team that made it sued.

It’s one of the most basic functions of any in-house corporate legal department. Identify the potential liabilities, and neutralize every one of them.

This week, the Colts exposed a massive blind spot that could become an expensive distraction if the league sticks with the status quo. With the owners gathering next week in Minneapolis, it’s hard not to think one or more of them will ask a very pointed question about why the league doesn’t review these videos — and whether it plans to change that habit, immediately.

Colts apologize to Tyreek Hill, Microsoft for now-deleted video

0

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts’ attempt at a little levity has gotten them into a situation that is no laughing matter.

The Colts, like most NFL teams, compiled a video to accompany their regular-season schedule release Wednesday evening, but they abruptly removed it from social platforms Wednesday night for multiple reasons, the team said.

“We removed our schedule release video because it exceeded our rights with Microsoft and included an insensitive clip involving Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. We sincerely apologize to Microsoft and Tyreek,” the team said in a statement to ESPN on Thursday.

The video, which was intended to be a spoof of the popular video game Minecraft, revealed the team’s season opener against Miami with an image of a Dolphin wearing a No. 10 jersey and labeled “Hill” swimming along before he is stopped by a Coast Guard boat with a blaring siren.

Hill was involved in a controversial incident with Miami-Dade deputies last September as he was arriving for a home game. Hill was dragged from his vehicle, taken to the ground and forcibly handcuffed. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, later called for the officers involved to be fired. Traffic citations issued against Hill were later dropped.

Rosenhaus said Thursday that Hill told him that he didn’t take the Colts’ post seriously and that he thought it was funny.

“He laughed about it and didn’t think they needed to take it down on his account,” Rosenhaus said.

As for the Microsoft rights violation, it is likely related to the fact that Minecraft is owned by Microsoft and images identical to those in the game were used in the Colts’ video. The Los Angeles Chargers used similar content in their schedule release video but showed a disclaimer indicating they had permission from Microsoft.

It’s unclear whether the Colts sought such permission from the company.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter contributed to this report.

Rumor: Three-Time Oscar Winner Daniel Day-Lewis Is Being Eyed To Play Magneto In Marvel Studios’ X-men Reboot

0

With Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier set to direct Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot, the rumour mill continues churning out possible names for the highly anticipated movie.

We’re not putting too much stock into any of these casting claims, but following this past week’s Professor X and Jean Grey rumours, there’s a possible update on the McU’s Magneto.

According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing three-time Oscar winner Sir Daniel Day-Lewis for the role of the Master of Magnetism. Would he ever really consider a superhero movie role? We wouldn’t bank on it, though the same might have once been said for Sir Ian McKellen.

It’s worth noting that this comes after the insider said, “No new [X-Men] cast will be introduced in the upcoming Avengers films, because the focus is on giving closure to the original characters. Casting hasn’t started yet because director Jake Schreier hasn’t officially signed on.

Daniel Day-Lewis Is Not Coming Out of Retirement to Play Magneto in MCU Unless Kevin Feige Pulls Off a Miracle

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its surprising casting choices. Throughout its existence, the superhero franchise has shocked fans with its ambitious and bold casting, underscoring the MCU’s reputation for making bold and effective casting choices.

However, there has been a recent rumor going around claiming the legend Daniel Day-Lewis is being eyed to play Magneto in the franchise. While he is back from retirement for a short while, it seems a little far-fetched, even for Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, that they would be eyeing an actor like Ddl.
