Biden rebuffs age criticism, attacks Trump on ‘The View’

0

play

Former President Joe Biden rebuffed criticism that he waited too long to drop out of the 2024 campaign in a special live interview Thursday on “The View” and maintains he would have defeated President Donald Trump in a rematch last fall.

Biden was peppered with several questions about his decision-making in the final months of his term, his relationship with major party leaders and if he takes responsibility for Trump’s decisive victory in November.

“I do, because look, I was in charge and he won,” Biden said. “So I take responsibility.”

Biden admitted 2024 was a very tough year across the board due to the aftermath of COVID-19 and historic inflation, but that his administration failed at advertising its political wins and what they had accomplished.

Asked about former Vice President Kamala Harris’ future, Biden said he “wasn’t surprised” that she lost, blaming it on Republicans taking a “sexist route” but that he keeps in contact with his former running mate who he said asked for his advice as she weighs whether to run for president again or for governor of California.

“She has a difficult decision to make about what she’s going to do. I hope she stays fully engaged,” Biden said. “I think she’s first rate, but we have a lot of really good candidates as well.”

Biden has been making the media rounds in an attempt to rehabilitate his reputation, particularly among Democrats, ahead of two highly anticipated books excavating his administration’s efforts to downplay concerns about his age and acuity that many believe hobbled Democrats in 2024.

“Original Sin” written by Axios’ Alex Thompson and CNN’s Jake Tapper, is set to release on May 20. It is being promoted as an “unsettling” account of how Biden, his family and senior White House aides mislead allies and the public about the former president’s “condition and limitations.”

Another book, “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America” which is scheduled to be released on July 8, reveals that top aides considered having Biden take a cognitive test to demonstrate his fitness to serve a second term, but that idea was eventually dropped, the New York Times reported.

Journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes released a book in April, “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,” that also documents the Biden administration’s efforts to cover the president’s decline.

“I think a lot of people who will read this book will be surprised and, on the left, be saddened at the degree to which Joe Biden put himself above the interests of his party and ultimately … from the Democratic point of view, the interests of the country,” Allen told USA TODAY in April.

‘Worst 100 days’: Biden defends his legacy, attacks Trump

Biden’s return to the public stage, starting with a roughly 30-minute speech last month, has largely served two goals: fixing his reputation and attacking Trump.

The former president has hired a well-known Democratic operative to help with the former, while rebuking the current administration for eliminating 7,000 employees in the Social Security Administration’s workforce, while addressing a conference of disability advocates during an April 15 speech in Chicago.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC earlier this week, Biden slammed Trump for pressuring Ukraine to surrender territory to Russia, calling it “modern-day appeasement” that will fuel uncertainty in American leadership among European allies.

Asked about Trump’s return to power on Thursday, Biden jabbed the current president on several fronts from domestic to international affairs.

“Let me put it this way, he’s had the worst 100 days any presidents ever had, and I would not say honesty has been his strong point,” Biden said of his Republican rival.

Trump hasn’t shied away from bashing Biden in speeches, online posts and executive orders either. And the White House hasn’t backed down in the face of the former president’s criticisms, as the two remain locked in a nasty feud.

The Trump administration is reportedly, for example, planning to release audio of Biden’s interview with Robert Hur, the special counsel who investigated his handling of classified documents and released a report last year calling attention to Biden’s mental acuity.

“Joe Biden is a complete disgrace to this country and the office he occupied,” White House communications Steven Cheung said in an May 7 post on X. “He has clearly lost all mental faculties and his handlers thought it’d be a good idea for him to do an interview and incoherently mumble his way through every answer. Sadly, this feels like abuse.”

Asked why Trump brings him up so much, Biden told hosts of the ABC show: “I beat him.”

‘So-called friends’: Bidens address frayed relationship with Democratic allies

One lingering issue for Biden is his relationship with fellow Democrats, who remain divided about the former president’s role in the 2024 campaign.

Joined on the show by his wife, former first lady Jill Biden, the two were asked about the misgivings fellow Democrats reportedly had about him being able to serve another four years, including from longtime allies such as former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a decades old friend who heavily lobbied for him to exit the race.

“The only reason I got out of the race was because I didn’t want to have a divided Democratic Party,” Joe Biden said.

The former president said rank-and-file Democrats didn’t buy into the idea of him dropping out due to his age, even after his disastrous debate performance against Trump last June. But he said that Democratic donors and leadership weren’t as supportive and that the narrative “took on a life of its own.”

“When I left the race, Kamala had hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said. “She had the best organized through our campaign, every organization, every state was organized.”

Jill Biden, who sat next to her husband for the second half of the hourlong interview, admitted he faltered but that they weren’t going to let a bad 90-minute debate define his decades of public service. She said the people writing books about President Biden’s cognitive abilities, “were not in the White House with us, and they didn’t see how hard Joe worked every single day.”

The former first lady, who has been open about the fractured ties with Pelosi and others, also rebuffed reporting that she helped build a “cocoon” around her husband to conceal suspicion about his decline.

“It was very hurtful,” Jill Biden said. “It was very hurtful, especially from some of our so-called friends.”

Gianluigi Donnarumma analysed: ‘Calamity keeper’ or ‘human wall’

0

Robinson used a different criteria, including his eyes, to come up with an alternative top three where Alisson does appear, along with Donnarumma.

“For me, Alisson is the best in the world, because he hasn’t forgotten the fundamentals of goalkeeping, which are to keep the ball out of the net,” Robinson explained.

“Commanding your box, communicating with your back four, stopping shots and dealing with one on ones are all part of that, but he can adapt to the modern way of playing out from the back too, without taking it to the next level like Ederson does.

“Ederson is the best with his feet but for the all-round package there is Alisson, Jan Oblak at Atletico Madrid and Donnarumma, and you can put those three in the same bracket.

“To be the very best you need the right mindset too, and Donnarumma has that. He has played so many games since his debut for AC Milan aged 16 that he is much more experienced than most keepers his age.

“That maturity means he is comfortable on the biggest stage, and can make a difference the way he has done so many times already.

“There is this uncertainty about where he will be next year but I bet PSG are glad they have got him at the moment – if they go on to win the Champions League this season, he will play a huge part in that.”

Memphis police officers found not guilty of all state charges in Tyre Nichols beating death

0

A Tennessee jury cleared three former Memphis police officers Wednesday of all state charges stemming from the fatal beating of a Black motorist that sparked protests across the country two years ago.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith were found not guilty of second-degree murder, among other charges, in the death of Tyre Nichols.

Shelby County Criminal Court Judge James Jones Jr. ordered the men released immediately. All three were overcome with emotion as they hugged one another and their lawyers in the Memphis courtroom.

Each of the three defendants faced a count of second-degree murder, a count of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct and a count of official oppression. They were acquitted of all.

They had already been facing time behind bars after they were convicted on some federal charges stemming from Nichols’ death.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy told reporters outside the courtroom that he and his team are “obviously disappointed” by the verdict.

“We respect the jury’s decision, but we obviously strongly disagree with it,” Mulroy said. “We, in good faith, brought this case, and I am convinced to this day that we had compelling evidence that showed that there was proof for every element of every one of the offenses that we charged. The jury took a different view. That is, of course, their right. That’s the part of the decision.”

The prosecutor said he struggled to grasp how all the officers were cleared of every charge.

“Was I surprised that there wasn’t a single guilty verdict on any of the counts or any of the lesser included offenses, given the overwhelming evidence that I think that we presented? Yes, I was surprised,” Mulroy said later in response to a question from a reporter. “Do I have an explanation for it? No.”

Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, lawyers for Nichols’ family, called the decision a “devastating miscarriage of justice” in a statement.

“Tyre’s life was stolen, and his family was denied the justice they so deeply deserve. We are outraged, and we know we are not alone,” they said.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson also decried the verdicts.

“Tyre and his family deserve true justice — not only in the courtroom, but in Congress, by passing police reform legislation once and for all,” Johnson said in a statement. “Traffic stops should never be a death sentence, and a badge should never— ever — be a shield to accountability.“

Nichols, a FedEx employee and aspiring photographer, was pulled over on suspicion of reckless driving at about 8:24 p.m. CT Jan. 7, 2023.

“Get the f— out the f—-ing car!” an officer screamed as he pulled Nichols out of his car.

“I didn’t do anything,” Nichols responded.

While Nichols was on the pavement, officers could be seen using pepper spray and a Taser on him before he ran away.

He ran toward his mother’s home, but pursuing officers caught up with him about 80 yards short of the house, officials said.

Body camera video showed Nichols being beaten and kicked as he absorbed more pepper spray.

Nichols screamed “Mom!” as he was beaten during the second confrontation with police.

A police training officer and use-of-force expert testified for prosecutors and called the actions officers took against Nichols “unnecessary” and “excessive.”

The beating reflected a common law enforcement practice known as the “street tax” or “run tax” for abusing a suspect who flees, prosecutors have said.

Nichols’ death, three days after the beating, sparked protests against police brutality around the country.

His parents were guests of the White House for President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address just weeks later.

Tyre Nichols trial: 3 former Memphis officers acquitted in fatal beating of Tyre Nichols after he fled a traffic stop

0

Memphis, Tennessee
AP
 —

Three former Memphis officers were acquitted Wednesday of all state charges, including second-degree murder, in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols after he ran away from a traffic stop, a death that sparked nationwide protests and prompted renewed calls for police reforms in the U.S.

An out-of-town jury from a majority-white county took about 8 1/2 hours over two days to find Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith not guilty on all charges after a nine-day trial in state court in Memphis, which is majority-Black. After the jury’s verdict was read, the defendants hugged their lawyers as relatives of the former officers cried. Outside the courtroom, one relative yelled, “Thank you, Jesus!”

Martin Zummach, Smith’s attorney, told The Associated Press by text: “It’s easy to defend a good person. It’s nerve racking to represent an innocent man. “

The three defendants still face the prospect of years in prison after they were convicted of federal charges last year, though they were acquitted of the most serious charges then, too. Two other former officers previously pleaded guilty in both state and federal court, including Emmitt Martin, who defense attorneys blamed for the majority of the violence.

Bean and Smith are out on bond and under house arrest after their federal convictions. Haley is being held in federal prison.

Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, fled a traffic stop after he was yanked out of his car, pepper-sprayed and hit with a Taser. Five officers who are also Black caught up with him and punched, kicked and hit him with a police baton, struggling to handcuff Nichols as he called out for his mother just steps from his home. Nichols died Jan. 10, 2023, three days after the beating.

Footage of the beating captured by a police pole camera also showed the officers milling about, talking and laughing as Nichols struggled with his injuries, video that prompted intense scrutiny of police in Memphis.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Nichols’ family, issued a statement expressing outrage at the outcome of the trial.

“Today’s verdicts are a devastating miscarriage of justice,” the statement reads. ”The world watched as Tyre Nichols was beaten to death by those sworn to protect and serve.”

Memphis District Attorney Steve Mulroy said he respects the jury but thinks the evidence was there for every charge that prosecutors brought.

“Was I surprised that there wasn’t a single guilty verdict on any of the counts or any of the lesser-included offenses, given the overwhelming evidence that we presented? Yes, I was surprised. Do I have an explanation for it? No.”

He said he spoke to Nichols’ family briefly and, “They were devastated. … I think they were outraged, and we can understand why they would be outraged, given the evidence.”

Former Memphis officers Desmond Mills Jr. and Martin, who were also involved in the beating, did not stand trial in state court after they agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors. They also pleaded guilty in federal court, where sentencing for all five officers is pending.

At trial, defense attorneys emphasized that Martin kicked and punched Nichols several times in the head.

The defense also seemed to score points with their use-of-force experts, who testified that the three officers on trial acted in compliance with police department policies and widely accepted law enforcement standards. Attorneys for Bean and Smith called character witnesses who testified that the men were good officers who did their job the right way.

Mills testified for the prosecution, saying he regrets his failure to stop the beating, which led to Nichols’ death from blunt force trauma. Nichols suffered tears and bleeding in the brain, Dr. Marco Ross, the medical examiner who performed the autopsy, said in court testimony.

The officers had been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. In addition to beating Nichols, prosecutors also said the officers failed to intervene and failed to tell medical personnel that Nichols had been hit repeatedly in the head.

Mills acknowledged on the stand that he had a duty to intervene, but didn’t. He admitted Nichols never punched or kicked any of the officers.

But Mills also bolstered the defense’s case when he said Nichols was actively resisting arrest and not complying with orders to present his hands to be cuffed. Under cross-examination, he indicated he would not have struck Nichols if Nichols had put his hands behind his back. He also agreed that an officer is not safe until a suspect is handcuffed and searched for a weapon.

Zummach noted in closing arguments that credit and debit cards that did not belong to Nichols were found in his car when it was searched after the beating and said it was likely why Nichols ran from the traffic stop. Defense lawyers have argued that the fatal beating would not have taken place if Nichols had just allowed himself to be handcuffed.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigations Special Agent Derek Miller, left, watches video evidence with members of the court during the trial of three former Memphis police officers accused in the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols, in Memphis, Tennessee, Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

“This is Emmitt Martin’s and Tyre Nichols’ doing,” Zummach said.

The jury for the state trial was chosen in Hamilton County, which includes Chattanooga, after Judge James Jones Jr. ordered the case be heard from people outside of Shelby County, which includes Memphis. Defense lawyers for the officers had argued that intense publicity made seating a fair jury difficult.

Prosecutor Paul Hagerman told reporters outside the courtroom that the Chattanooga area was chosen for jury selection after the city was shown in a study to have the least amount of pre-trial publicity among Tennessee’s largest cities.

In December, the U.S. Justice Department said a 17-month investigation showed the Memphis Police Department uses excessive force and discriminates against Black people.

The five officers, the city of Memphis and the police chief are being sued by Nichols’ family for $550 million. A trial has been scheduled for next year.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
