Celebrating civil rights, freedom on John Brown Day

0

A North Country organization is hosting its annual birthday celebration for John Brown on Saturday. The famous abolitionist spent the later years of his life in the Adirondacks. He was executed in 1859 in Virginia, but his body was buried at his Adirondack home, now the John Brown Farm State Historic Site just outside the village of Lake Placid.

Ceremonies for John Brown Day 2025 kick off at 2 p.m. Full event details can be found on the John Brown Lives! website.

David Escobar went to the farm to talk with Martha Swan, executive director of John Brown Lives!, the group behind the event. They spoke about Brown’s legacy in the region and what to expect at this year’s installment of John Brown Day.

Their conversation has been edited for space and clarity.

David EscobarCelebrating civil rights and freedom on John Brown Day

MARTHA SWAN: John Brown, first of all, was a white man, and a lot of people are surprised to learn that a white man sacrificed his life, dedicated his entire adult life, to end slavery and for the lives and dignity and full humanity of Black people. Over the course of his life, he became involved with the Black community in different parts of the US and Canada. He was very active on the Underground Railroad. And as the country was not loosening its grip on slavery or loosening its commitment to the expansion of slavery, John Brown became more and more convinced that more dramatic action than moral suasion or Underground Railroad activity was needed. So he joined the fight out in Kansas to help ensure or to help guarantee that Kansas would be admitted as a free state where slavery was not allowed into the Union. And then he went on to Harpers Ferry with the goal of seizing weapons and inspiring people who were enslaved to flee into the Appalachian Mountains and set up, I guess you would call them guerrilla encampments. And when this 1846 “scheme of justice and benevolence,” as it was called, the distribution of 120,000 acres of mostly Essex County land to free Black New Yorkers to try to circumvent a discriminatory property voting rights law of the few dozen families, Black families moved here from Troy or New York City and settled here. John Brown got wind of this, and he talked to Garrett Smith, who is the one who donated all this land, and said, “I want to move up there and be a friend and a neighbor and a support to this community.” And he lived in a multi-racial community, and that was something that was very important to him.

DAVID ESCOBAR: So we’re here at John Brown’s farm in Lake Placid, and I know there’s been a tradition stretching back several, many years of people coming up here to honor John Brown, which will be happening on Saturday. Can you talk a little bit about how that tradition started and how it translates into today?

SWAN: So in 1922, Black leaders from the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP concluded that here was this white man who laid down his life for Black people. And this was the height of the Jim Crow era, and lynchings and horrific discrimination and segregation in that moment. Still, they had this vision that this is a man who needs to be recognized, who needs to be acknowledged and needs to be honored. So they began in 1922, this tradition of making an annual pilgrimage on or around his birthday, which is May 9, of coming to the grave site here where we are, and laying a wreath on his grave. And best we can tell, that continued for decades. And then in 1999, the late novelist Russell Banks and some other people revived the tradition. They said we need to revive this annual rededication to the values that John Brown stood for.

ESCOBAR: Who are some of the people that will be honored tomorrow? And is there anything exceptional about this year’s event?

SWAN: I think what’s exceptional and atypical are the times we’re living in. The individuals that we are honoring are extraordinary. What makes Saturday and presenting Diane Noiseax, Kelly Metzgar and Peggy Shepard with the Spirit of John Brown Freedom Award is the timeliness of their work. They’ve been in the trenches doing work on behalf of immigrants and new Americans, on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community and on behalf of people experiencing the brunt of environmental racism. And the communities they work with and are dedicated to are in the line of fire. And so to be able to honor them and thank them and draw inspiration from them.

Champions League: How Paris St-Germain & Inter Milan reached final

0

Only Luis Enrique will know if he truly believed his own words when he said PSG would be better off without Kylian Mbappe.

The France captain, the club’s record scorer, had just made public his decision to leave in May 2024 when Luis Enrique said his side would be better – both in attack and defence.

“PSG will continue to be a great team and we’ll get even better. We will bring in players with a strong mentality and players who identify with the club – that’s how life works,” said Luis Enrique.

Fast-forward 12 months and few would argue against Luis Enrique’s prediction after his side won Ligue 1 with six games to spare and without losing a game.

The ease with which they won the domestic title – and a shortage of tough opposition – could have been seen as a negative in building for success in Europe.

Marseille, in 1993, remain France’s only winners of the Champions League.

Having finished runners-up in the 2020 Champions League, PSG reached the semi-finals twice and quarter-finals twice in the following four years.

But there was an acceptance following Luis Enrique’s appointment in 2023 that something had to change if they were to get over the line.

That summer forward Lionel Messi left to join Inter Miami and Neymar was sold to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

It marked the start of the end for the ‘Galactico’ era, with Mbappe’s departure 12 months later bringing it to a close.

In their absence, Luis Enrique built an all-action, high-pressing side in his image, based on the collective rather than the individual.

In Europe this season PSG started poorly and finished the group stage in 15th place.

But, inspired by January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, PSG have beaten four English clubs – Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal – in the tournament.

THUNDERBOLTS* Director Jake Schreier In Talks To Helm Marvel Studios’ X-MEN Reboot

0

It looks like Marvel Studios has finally found a director to take the helm of the long-awaited X-Men reboot.

According to Deadline, Marvel is staying in-house for MCU debut of the Children of the Atom, with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier in early talks to step behind the camera.

Apparently, early reactions to Thunderbolts* and buzz about the movie being viewed as a return to form for the studio “sealed the deal” for Schreier after months of meetings with potential directors.

“Marvel and Schreier had an incredible experience working together on Thunderbolts*, a film that has since won over critics and fans becoming Marvel’s best reviewed film since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. While that recent meeting sealed the deal, Marvel execs were well aware how much Schreirer loved the X-Men comics, an early sign that he would ultimately get one of the those meetings to pitch his vision of what a new X-Men movie would look like.”

Thunderbolts* has been performing pretty well at the box office so far, but it’s hardly been a runaway success. The movie was a big hit with critics, however.

Though new actors will almost certainly be brought in to play the main characters for this reboot, most of the cast of the 20th Century Fox-era films are set to return for Avengers: Doomsday. They are also expected to appear in Secret Wars, so the OG team might factor in to the new X-Men’s debut in some capacity.

Though no casting announcements have come in, several actors are believed to be on the studio’s radar for key roles.

Harris Dickinson (Babygirl, The Iron Claw, Triangle of Sadness) and Jack Champion (Avatar, Scream 6) are reportedly being eyed to play Cyclops, with The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri and Jurassic World: Dominion star DeWanda Wise in line to play Storm. Kitty Pryde and Gambit are also expected to be on the team.

More recently, Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo, Euphoria) was rumored to be up for Mystique, Julia Butters (The Gray Man, The Fablemans) is said to be in talks to play Pryde, and Margaret Qualley might be on the studio’s radar for Rogue.

Earlier this year, we reported on a slightly more out-there rumor that Denzel Washington might be set to play Magneto.

We don’t know if any of the actors listed above are still (or were ever) in contention, but now that the project has a director attached, we should begin to get casting news fairly soon.

Plot details are still under wraps, and the movie does not have a release date. Michael Lesslie penned the script.

UFC 316: Surging fight-finisher saves light heavyweight clash on Merab Dvalishvili vs. Sean O’ Malley 2 card

0

Azamat Murzakanov now faces Brendson Ribeiro at UFC 316 after Brazilian light heavyweight Johnny Walker was forced off the June 7 pay-per-view event in Newark, N.J., MMA Fighting confirmed following a report from Super Lutas.

It’s still unclear what led to Walker’s removal from the bout.

Murzakanov (14-0) looks to extend his UFC winning streak to five in New Jersey. He hasn’t fought since a bonus-winning knockout over Alonzo Menifield in August 2024, his second $50,000 award in the company. The Brave CF openweight grand prix winner has also scored UFC stoppages against Tafon Nchukwi and Devin Clark.

Former Shooto Brazil champion Ribeiro (17-7, 1 no contest) had his back against the wall after a 0-2 start in the promotion versus Zhang Mingyang and Magomed Gadzhiyasulov, but turned things around with a lackluster decision over Caio Machado and a second-round kimura win against previously unbeaten Diyar Nurgozhay.

UFC 316 take place at Prudential Center and features men’s bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili defending his title in a main event rematch with Sean O’Malley. Julianna Peña co-headlines the show, putting the women’s 135-pound belt on the line against two-time PFL champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison.

Manchester United 4-1 Athletic: resumen, goles y resultado

0

No hubo milagro en Old Trafford.

UFC’s Kayla Harrison doesn’t believe in weight cuts but has no choice

0

Kayla Harrison is having to push her body to unprecedented lengths in her pursuit of a UFC championship.

Harrison (18-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has to make 135 pounds for the first time in her career when she challenges bantamweight champion Julianna Peña (11-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in the UFC 316 co-main event June 7 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The former two-time Olympic gold medalist judoka and two-time PFL women’s lightweight champion is no stranger to a strenuous schedule. But in order to prove that she’s the best mixed martial artist, Harrison wants to do it under the UFC banner, and there’s a heavy price to pay.

“When I competed in judo, I competed at 78 kilos which is 172 pounds,” Harrison said on her Instagram. “Then when I moved to MMA, I competed at 155 pounds. When I signed with the UFC, the highest weight class they have for females is 135 pounds, and I naturally weigh about 165 pounds. It was a very tough choice for me. I don’t really believe in cutting weight. I don’t think it sends the right message to girls. I was always taught in judo if you want to win, you’ll win at whatever weight you compete at type thing.

“But this is the weight class that’s available to me. My goal has always been to be UFC champion. I’m not 20 years old anymore. I’m 34 years old, and I’m asking my body to do more than it’s ever done. I have to walk six miles everyday on top of the two training sessions I do everyday, and teach my kids. I have to surrender to God and just trust that he has a plan for me, and I just have to keep doing the next right thing. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve done in my career, for sure.”

Harrison has successfully made 136 pounds in her two octagon wins over former champion Holly Holm, and most recently Ketlen Vieira at UFC 307 this past October. However, Harrison admitted to peeing blood one week prior to her fight against Vieira, which caused plenty of concern on what she’s putting her body through.

‘X-Men’ Movie Eyes Thunderbolts Filmmaker Jake Schreier as Director

0

Jake Schreier, hot off of directing Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, is in talks to return to the company with the big-screen reboots of the X-Men.

Sources confirm that Schreier, whose movie garnered some of the best reviews for Marvel in quite a few years, is engaged in early talks in for the gig. Michael Lesslie, a writer on Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is penning the script with Marvel’s Kevin Feige, as usual, producing the feature, which is currently untitled.

Marvel has been quietly moving ahead on finding the X-Men director front for a few weeks now. Talk of a director heated up this week.

The development finally puts an X-Men movie from Marvel on a track to viability. The title, first created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the early 1960s, has been the most popular Marvel comic book title since the 1980s and then a popular cartoon in the 1990s. And the Bryan Singer-directed movie released in 2000 was one of the films that ushered in the modern comic book movie era, with its cast becoming enmeshed in popular culture. Even now, 25 years later, actors such as Hugh Jackman are still playing their roles to the delight of audiences. (See last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed over $1.3 billion.)

For 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the movies, the franchise proved to be a long-lasting moneymaker until it ran out of steam with 2019’s Dark Phoenix, followed by the sad pandemic release of spin-off The New Mutants. By then, Disney had grandly purchased Fox, and legions of fans have been waiting impatiently for their big-screen return since.

Marvel has been careful in its development and has teased the original cast in some of its movies, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Patrick Stewart’s Professor X) and aforementioned Deadpool & Wolverine. And it is bringing much of original cast back for Avengers: Doomsday, which is shooting this summer ahead of a release next year.

The Schreier choice is a confirmation of a successful relationship, showing Marvel it is happy with his work on Thunderbolts*. The studio likes to work with filmmakers with which it finds itself in sympatico, be it Jon Watts on the Spider-Man movies (Watts and Schreier also happen to share the same CAA agent), Daniel Destin Cretton or Joe and Anthony Russo. Thunderbolts* opened to a solid $74.3 million but more importantly, scored strong audience exit scores and strong reviews, helping Marvel turn a downward slide in the opposite direction.

Scheier is additionally repped by Untitled Entertainment.

Brie Larson Sparks Captain Marvel Return Rumors for Avengers: Doomsday

0

Brie Larson just wrapped her run in the UK stage play Elektra and is already sparking speculation about her return as Captain Marvel in Avengers: Doomsday.

That’s not all, as it’s also been learned that Larson will be appearing at Comic Con Liverpool this November—possibly suggesting she’s sticking around the UK, where Avengers: Doomsday is filming or expected to be filming later this year.

Adding fuel to the fire, Larson is listed as part of the recently rumored 60-member cast of Avengers: Doomsday.

Brie Larson in Elektra

Brie Larson finished Elektra

Tuesday on Instagram, Larson, who shaved her head for the role, shared images and a message about her time performing Elektra at the Duke of York’s Theatre, marking its conclusion. The timing lines up perfectly with the start of filming on Avengers: Doomsday in the UK:

It’s taken me a minute to even remotely have the words to express what Elektra has meant to me. We shared something special during our time at the Duke of Yorks. As a company we laughed, sang, screamed, cried, learned how to sing “no” 100 different ways, got stronger physically and mentally, stayed connected as a unit, enjoyed cocktails hours, risked it all every show, danced at gay clubs, played games, and spoke with thousands and thousands of you at stage door. We were lead by an incredible team of creatives. And we loved every second of it. I didn’t realize how much I needed community and human interaction until this experience. It’s an honor of a lifetime to share these moments together. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s not lost on me that many had to travel far distances, and spend hard earned money to see us. You made it what it was, and we couldn’t have done it without you. It’s going to take a long time to unravel the riches I acquired. But know I have never been happier than giving you everything I had, every night, and I can’t wait to keep doing that in new ways. Here are some of the bittersweet fragments of that glorious last time. I’m raising a glass to what it was.

Brie Larson Liverpool Comic Con info

Regarding her Liverpool Comic Con appearance, the official account tweeted:

Comic Con Liverpool welcomes Brie Larson, known for projects such as Captain Marvel/The Marvels, Unicorn Store, Kong: Skull Island, and many more. Appearing 15-16 November!

Will Captain Marvel make it out of Avengers: Doomsday alive?

The last we saw of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel was in The Marvels, where she teamed up with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan to stop a multiversal threat—and helped set up the formation of what appears to be the Young Avengers team in the post-credits scene.

The Marvels mega-bombed at the box office with only $206M worldwide which followed the $1.13 billion dollar Captain Marvel movie, so similar to Avengers: Endgame, just how much Brie Larson appears in Avengers: Doomsday is anyone’s guess.

The Russos return to direct, where it was actually said they wrote Brie Larson out of Endgame and only featured her in the beginning and at the end, so it might be safe to say not to expect a lot of Captain Marvel in Doomsday, assuming she even appears and isn’t “busy” out in space doing something else.

It will also be interesting to see how many of these characters make it out of Doomsday alive. It’s already been said Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars will be something of an MCU soft reboot, so what could be happening is that Marvel is using the movies to get rid of characters that haven’t been successful with the MCU audience, such as Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel. Something similar just went down in Thunderbolts.
