Patriots 2025 schedule: Predicting New England’s record

0

play

The New England Patriots enter the 2025 NFL season coming off back-to-back four-win seasons, marking their worst two-year stretch since the early 1990s.

The result of those two seasons? The Patriots moved on from legendary coach Bill Belichick and pulled the plug on his successor, Jerod Mayo, after just one season.

Now, New England is pivoting to another familiar face to get the franchise back on track. That will be former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, who played eight seasons and won three Super Bowls with the Patriots.

Vrabel built his reputation as a strong coach by consistently getting the Titans to outperform the talent they had on their roster. He will be hoping to pull off a similar feat in New England, though the team has added plenty of high-end players to their roster during the offseason to aid in Vrabel’s quest.

How good can New England be after these significant changes? USA TODAY Sports is predicting the Patriots’ record as the 2025 NFL schedule release approaches.

Patriots record prediction 2025

Record prediction: 8-9

The Patriots should be significantly better than they were in 2024 given the upgrades they made to their roster. The team added talent at each level of its defense, with Milton Williams and Harold Landry joining the defensive line, Robert Spillane coming in as a veteran presence at linebacker and Carlton Davis joining the fray as a high-end complement to second-team All-Pro Christian Gonzalez.

Offensively, the Patriots notably upgraded their offensive tackle position, drafting Will Campbell fourth overall to protect Drake Maye‘s blind side while Morgan Moses, an experienced right tackle, joined the team in free agency. The team took a similar rookie-veteran approach at wide receiver, with third-round pick Kyle Williams and 2020 All-Pro Stefon Diggs joining the team.

The question about those upgrades is whether they will merely serve to make New England more competitive or whether the Patriots will be able to close out some close games. The good news for the Patriots? They have the second-easiest strength of schedule for 2025, per Sharp Football Analysis.

Notably, the Patriots have an easier-looking home schedule. Their matchups against the the Browns, Dolphins, Giants, Jets, Panthers and Raiders all could be winnable, especially if Maye takes a step forward in his second season, as expected.

The Patriots’ road schedule is tougher, but the team figures to be either on-par or better-than the Saints and Titans. New England should be extra motivated for the latter game, which represents an opportunity for Vrabel to earn revenge against his former club.

New England probably isn’t yet ready to legitimately challenge for a wild-card spot in 2025, but the team should still be significantly more competitive than it was last season. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the Patriots double their win total from last season, though they might not yet have enough talent to post a winning record for the first time since 2021.

This Blue Jays prospectโ€™s fastball is as fast as Aroldis Chapmanโ€™s

0

Aroldis Chapman, a long time rival to the Blue Jays with the Yankees and now Red Sox, has always been known for his incredible fastball. While Chapman is 37, he just set a Red Sox record with a 103.8 mile per hour fastball.

While Chapman’s with the Red Sox, the Blue Jays now have a prospect with a fastball that’s reminiscent of Chapman’s electric heater in Colby Martin. Martin, 24, is currently playing at Single-A Dunedin and has a remarkable story.

The Blue Jays took the flame throwing right-hander in the 16th round of last year’s MLB Draft out of the NAIA’s Southeastern University, which was the final stop in what was a wild journey.

Martin started his college career in 2020 at Messiah College, where he worked an second baseman and shortstop.

He then went to Shenendoah University, where he was a All-American second baseman in 2021 and also worked a bit as a reliever.

His pitching wasn’t anything to write home about, however, as he threw 1 2/3 innings in 2023 while hitting .390 as a position player.

While those stats weren’t impressive, they put him on scout’s radar, which helped him earn tryouts with the Phillies, Red Sox and Padres.

He nearly signed a contract with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2023, but they team rescinded the contract after they saw his MRI results

โ€œI’m not an emotional guy,โ€ Martin told Eli Fishman. โ€œBut as soon as I walked out of the complex I called my Mom and I was just cryingโ€ฆ I was defeated.โ€

He then when Southeastern, where he had a 4.41 ERA in 16 1/3 innings in 2024.

That proved to be a smart decision, as it resulted in him being drafted by the Blue Jays. While he’s only in Single-A, he’s looking like a legitimate prospect for the Blue Jays.

Colby Martin’s electric fastball might be the best in the Blue Jays’ system

Martin debuted in Dunedin last season and struggled with his control. He finished the year with a 7.27 ERA in 8 2/3 innings, and had a BB/9 of 14.54. That was to be expected since he struggled with control in college and is still new to pitching.

Fortunately for him, things have started to look better this year. He has yet to allow an earned run through 9 1/3 innings, and he’s only allowed four walks (BB/9 of 3.86). That’s a great step in the right direction. He’s also recorded 12 strikeouts (K/9 of 11.57).

Although Martin still isn’t close to his big league debut, his emergence as a solid reliever is a huge boon to a the farm system that’s struggled to develop quality pitching.

Toronto had a lot of prospects step up in April, and Martin seems to be following in those footsteps.

There may never be another pitcher like Chapman, but flamethrowers like him are always fun to watch. If Martin can continue to pound the strike zone and work his way up through the organization, he could have a very bright future.

The tools seem to be there, so it’ll just be a matter of him putting it all together.

Steelers rookie minicamp takeaways: Kaleb Johnson sets bar high; Will Howard living โ€˜dreamโ€™

0

PITTSBURGH โ€” This weekend at rookie minicamp, the newest Pittsburgh Steelers took their first steps in what they hope will be long NFL journeys.ย  Though the pads wonโ€™t go on for weeks, and the games donโ€™t start for months, that hasnโ€™t stopped third-round pick Kaleb Johnson from setting a high bar for himself.

โ€œNajee (Harris) had 1,000 yards all four years,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œI want to be next up. I want to come in, (and) I want to get more. โ€ฆ Win Super Bowls. Rookie of the Year. All-Pro. I want to do all of that. I feel like they can support me here, and I can do it.โ€

At 6 foot 1 and 225 pounds, the former Iowa back led the Big Ten in rushing yards (1,537), rushing touchdowns (21) and all-purpose yards (1,725) in 2024. Johnsonโ€™s efficient production in a zone-centric offense makes him a schematic fit, which should help him hit the ground running.

The rookie running backโ€™s goals are to learn the playbook and earn the coaching staffโ€™s trust with the hope of becoming an โ€œevery-down backโ€ sooner rather than later. For it to be sooner, he knows thereโ€™s one key part of his game that must improve.

โ€œPass blocking,โ€ Johnson said. โ€œThatโ€™s my main thing. Iโ€™m working on it every day after practice. Just going over to the bag right there and hitting it with (running backs) coach (Eddie) Faulkner. And really just learning from (veteran RB Jaylen) Warren, too, because heโ€™s one of the best doing it in the league right now. So I told him, โ€˜Letโ€™s do it. Letโ€™s work after every practice and do it. Iโ€™m down to go.’โ€

Will Howard had โ€˜soft spotโ€™ for Pittsburgh

While prospects came from around the country to participate in minicamp, Downingtown, Pa., native Will Howard jumped in his car and made a casual, four-hour drive across the state to join his new team. Throughout the draft process, the Steelers showed plenty of interest in the former Ohio State QB, including taking him out to dinner before his pro day.

The interest was mutual.

โ€œI had a little soft spot for Pittsburgh,โ€ Howard said. โ€œI was hoping in my heart that theyโ€™d picked me.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s exciting to be out here,โ€ he continued. โ€œItโ€™s been my dream my whole life to be an NFL quarterback. Here we are. Iโ€™m trying to enjoy it as much as I can.โ€

Though fans rarely get overly excited about sixth-round picks, Howardโ€™s position and the Steelersโ€™ unsettled QB situation have made the new signal caller an early fan favorite. Howard said that before minicamp, he and Buckeyes teammate/Steelers linebacker Jack Sawyer drove to Pittsburgh to take in a Pirates game and visit Primanti Brothers. He received a warm reception when shown on the big screen during the baseball game.

The question is whether heโ€™ll get the same reception just down the street at Acrisure Stadium this year. Though the Steelers are optimistic about Aaron Rodgersโ€™ eventually signing with them, should the veteran QB opt to skip OTAs or decide not to join the Steelers, Howard could have an opportunity to work his way up the depth chart. Even if Rodgers misses part of OTAs, that alone would provide Howard a chance to take more competitive reps.

โ€œIโ€™m just treating it like any other day,โ€ Howard said. โ€œI want to come in here. I want to learn. I want to get better. Thatโ€™s how Iโ€™m looking at this. Who knows what happens? Iโ€™m not worried about that. Iโ€™m just worried about myself and learning and getting better through the process.โ€

It benefits Howard that heโ€™s experienced just about everything a QB can. Heโ€™s gone from being overlooked during the recruiting process as a three-star recruit, to stepping in for a starter who was injured at Kansas State, to being benched, to transferring, to leading a national championship run. The moments when the 6-4, 236-pound QB was doubted are those that fuel him most.

โ€œIt helped me a ton,โ€ Howard said. โ€œThatโ€™s kind of the story of my life. To be in the NFL, youโ€™re always fighting for a job, no matter what. If youโ€™re not on your game one day, you can be gone. Itโ€™s a business. The things I went through, (I) learned to push through adversity and (bounce) back from bad things. I learned so much, and that gave me a pretty hard head. Iโ€™ve got a chip on my shoulder, and Iโ€™m just glad to be here.โ€

UDFA TE hopes versatility helps him earn a spot

The biggest buzz during minicamp surrounded first-round pick Derrick Harmon, Johnson and others. However, for players further down the depth chart, these first days in Pittsburgh might be even more important as they look to beat the odds and make the roster as undrafted free agents.

Former University of South Dakota tight end JJ Galbreath fits into that latter category.

Though Galbreath went undrafted, his eye-popping numbers at his pro day make him an intriguing player to follow through training camp. His 4.61-second 40-yard dash and 4.20 shuttle time would have been the fastest among tight ends who tested at the combine. Galbreath also would have tied for the second-best vertical jump (38 inches) and third-best broad jump (10-3).

โ€œI feel like if you go and watch a film, you can definitely see that,โ€ he said. โ€œBut (pro day) itโ€™s just more of like a environment where youโ€™re able to showcase truly what youโ€™re about.โ€

Galbreath said he was surprised when the Steelers called after the draft and offered him a contract as an undrafted free agent. He quickly accepted before hearing other offers.

His journey through FCS football made him an overlooked prospect. Thatโ€™s something heโ€™s used to.

โ€œThatโ€™s one of the big motivators and takeaways,โ€ Galbreath said. โ€œComing out of high school into college, I felt like I was overlooked. Iโ€™m not going to sit here and, you know, take it crazy personal. But Iโ€™m going to use it as a chip to showcase my talents that I should have been with the top from the very beginning. Iโ€™m still going to try and carry that mentality and mindset as I go through camp.โ€

Galbreath joins an Arthur Smith offense that likes to feature the tight end. But heโ€™ll also face plenty of competition to make the team with a depth chart that includes Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward and Donald Parham Jr. Heโ€™ll also be competing with fellow UDFA and TE/FB DJ Thomas-Jones for a roster spot.

Though it might be an uphill battle, one thing that will help Galbreath is his versatility.

โ€œBeing able to line up as a one, two, three receiver. On the ball. Off the ball. In the backfield,โ€ Galbreath said when explaining his role at South Dakota. โ€œWeโ€™re incorporating a lot of that in our Y and F position here (in Pittsburgh) as well, whether youโ€™re lining up split out as a receiver or in the backfield, run blocking, perimeter blocking, pin blocking, and then all the routes as well. I see a really good fit there from the offense that I came from.โ€

Steelersโ€™ search for WR depth starts on their own roster

When the Steelers dealt George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last week, they shook up some locker room dynamics and added draft picks that might help answer the long-term question at QB. But at the same time, they also dealt a significant blow to their own receiver depth.

Roc Taylor, a 6-2, 213-pound receiver, already recognized an opportunity when he signed as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis. When the Steelers trade occurred, it might have helped open another door a little wider โ€” or at least shortened his path to a roster spot.

โ€œJust another chance and opportunity,โ€ Taylor said. โ€œCome in and work and prove I can play with the best at the top level. And just work, control what I can control and play my role to the best of my ability.โ€

Taylorโ€™s big, physical frame helped him rack up more than 2,000 receiving yards during his junior and senior seasons. Heโ€™s hoping to use some of those same attributes to climb the depth chart in Pittsburgh.

โ€œThe physicality,โ€ Taylor said when asked what can help him stand out. โ€œThe 100 percent effort and just to be able to run all day. Iโ€™m a hardworking player. I never get tired.โ€

Oh and that name, Roc. Itโ€™s short for Rokafewlloa, a unique take on J.D. Rockefeller, the American industrialist who was once one of the countryโ€™s wealthiest people.

โ€œIt came from my grandma,โ€ Taylor said. โ€œShe named me that when I was little. โ€ฆ She told me one day Iโ€™m going to be rich. Iโ€™m living out the reality right now, but I still got some work to do to prove that point.โ€

NBA betting – Bets that stand out for Sunday’s playoff games

0

Sunday’s NBA playoff slate features two games, with the Oklahoma City Thunder visiting the Denver Nuggets (3:30 p.m. ET on ABC) in Game 4 of their Western Conference second-round series and the Indiana Pacers hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers (8 p.m. on TNT) in the Eastern Conference.

Denver holds a 2-1 series lead but is a 6.5-point home underdog in Sunday’s Mother’s Day matinee. Cleveland is a 5.5-point road favorite on Sunday against the Pacers, who hold a 2-1 series edge.

The semifinals continue Monday with a doubleheader on ESPN. The Boston Celtics look to even their series with the New York Knicks in the first game of the night (7:30 p.m.), while the Minnesota Timberwolves head to Golden State Warriors (10 p.m.) with a 2-1 series lead.

Here are some of the bets that stand out for Sunday’s games.

Odds are as of publication time. For the most up-to-date odds, visit ESPN BET

Bets that stand out for Sunday

Michael Porter Jr. under 6.5 total rebounds + assists (+105)

This jumbo wing just delivered a stellar performance in a rousing Game 3 win for Denver. Why the fade? Porter revealed after that performance he’s getting pregame injections in his shoulder and that the injury limits his ability to get physical. Friday’s strong game signaled the first since Game 3 against the Clippers that MPJ collected at least seven combined rebounds and assists, with the injury playing a role in this pattern, per the player himself. I can envision an outcome that has Porter taking plenty of shots from beyond the arc, but without working the glass or passing lanes very much.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over 7.5 assists (-130)

The Nuggets are sending extra attention to SGA in order to force his supporting cast to produce. The result has been a spike in potential and realized assists for the likely MVP; Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 15.9 potential assists in the playoffs and this leaps to nearly 21 per game for this series against Denver. Given this extreme passing volume, Gilgeous-Alexander appears prepared to hit this dimes prop in a must-win matinee for the Thunder.

Donovan Mitchell over 30.5 points (-120)

The return of Darius Garland helped open the floor for Mitchell in Game 3’s epic offensive showing for the Cavaliers. Garland didn’t consume many shots, but instead focused on organizing the offense to the benefit of his peers. Mitchell remains the scoring engine for Cleveland; confirmed by lofting 89 shots through the first three games of the series. The Pacers don’t have the point-of-attack defenders needed to slow Mitchell’s live dribble scoring prowess. With Mitchell’s shooting volume pattern against the Pacers, volume should be on his side tonight.
