Imee Marcos’ gamble: siding with the Dutertespublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 12 May

Senator Imee Marcos began her re-election campaign as part of her younger brother Bongbong Marcos’ slate, but announced her withdrawal in protest to the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte last March.

Shortly after that, Imee released an ad that showed her re-election bid being endorsed by Duterte’s daughter, Vice-President Sara. In the ad, both women are dressed in black, condemning the situation under Marcos’ presidency – where many, they say, are “starving for food and justice”.

Imee is not officially running under the elder Duterte’s ticket, but some analysts have said her affiliation with them could sway things in the Dutertes’ favour.

Sara’s endorsement is also expected to give Imee’s campaign a much-needed boost. Imee is fighting tooth-and-nail for the last few spots in the 12 Senate seats up for grabs, according to opinion polls.

Family feuds are a staple of Philippine politics, though Imee insists she is not feuding with her brother. She has however criticised her brother’s closest associates, which include members of their extended family.

Meanwhile her alliance with the Dutertes goes way back. When Rodrigo Duterte ran for president in 2016, he credited Imee as the only governor to support the campaign. In 2019, Imee was elected senator under the Duterte ticket.

But when the Marcos-Duterte alliance unravelled, Imee found herself in the middle. Voters could not figure out which side she was on, contributing to her poor performance in the surveys, analysts say.

With her re-election on the line, Imee is on Sara’s side. When the results come in we’ll find out if that gamble pays off.

Chris Berman signs contract extension that will run through ESPN’s 50th anniversary

0

Chris Berman joined ESPN during its first year of existence and he will be there for its 50th anniversary in 2029.

Berman has signed a multi-year contract extension that will run through that milestone. The new deal also ensures that Berman, who turned 70 this year, will be part of ESPN’s Super Bowl broadcast in February 2027

“I came to ESPN at 24 years young for my first full-time TV job. I had a full head of hair, was wet behind the ears, and my assignment was to host the wrap-up SportsCenter at 2:30 a.m. ESPN had been on the air for less than a month, and we had fewer than 100 employees,” Berman said in a statement to Front Office Sports. “Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined turning 70 and still being here at our network, which long ago became an icon of sports broadcasting. We’re closing in on our very first Super Bowl, and now I will be able to be part of that, too.”

In addition to his many other roles at the network, Berman anchored Super Bowl pregame shows for ABC in 2000, 2003 and 2006. The 2006 game broadcast was the last produced by ABC Sports and the 2027 game, which will be simulcast on ABC, will be the first under the ESPN banner.

Chris Berman signs extension through his 50th anniversary at ESPN

0

Chris Berman will remain at ESPN through his 50th anniversary with the company, including a role in the network’s Super Bowl coverage in 2027, the network announced Monday.

Berman signed an extension that will carry him through 2029, when he would be the first ESPN employee to hit the 50-year mark. Berman joined ESPN less than a month after its September 1979 launch.

ESPN will cover the Super Bowl on Feb. 14, 2027, from Los Angeles. Berman, as part of his new deal, will contribute to the coverage. It will be his 45th Super Bowl in various roles for the network; he hosted three pregame shows for ABC in 2000, 2003 and 2006.

“Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined turning 70 and still being here at our network, which long ago became an icon of sports broadcasting,” Berman said in a statement released by ESPN. “We’re closing in on our very first Super Bowl, and now I will be able to be part of that, too.”

“For a remarkable half-century, Chris has embodied ESPN with his smart and entertaining style,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said. “Boomer’s enjoyment of sports jumps through the screen and generations of fans have loved being along for the ride.

“ESPN has been so fortunate to have Chris making us better for decades and I am delighted that will continue beyond our 50th anniversary. And no studio broadcaster has meant more to NFL coverage than Chris and to have his presence on our first Super Bowl presentation is both apropos and significant.”

Berman hosted ESPN’s Sunday pregame show for 31 years. His tenure on “NFL PrimeTime” has continued with the show on ESPN+ and in the postseason on ESPN. He’s also a longtime host of “SportsCenter” (starting with the 2:30 a.m. ET edition when he was 24 years old) and has been a key part of ESPN’s coverage of Major League Baseball (including 31 All-Star games and 30 World Series) and golf’s major championships.

He’s also the on-site host of the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony, which he has done since 1979. His 16th movie role, as part of Happy Gilmore 2, will be out later this summer.

Berman, who turned 70 on May 10, said, “It is mind-blowing to think that I now have the opportunity and good fortune to work here for 50 years, which would be two-thirds of my entire life!”

Texas Mom, 44, Convicted of Molesting Her Son’s Friend, 13, Gets Prison

0

  • Natalie Sorrells, 46, was sentenced to five years in prison after a jury found her guilty of two counts of indecent sexual contact with a minor
  • She allegedly molested her son’s 13-year-old friend multiple times, including at a party for her son and while driving the boy home after a football game, according to an arrest affidavit
  • Jurors acquitted Sorrells on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which could have carried a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison

A youth ministry volunteer in Texas who smiled for her mugshot after being arrested for molesting her son’s then-13-year-old friend is now a convict.

Natalie Sorrells, 46, was sentenced to five years in prison after jurors found her guilty on two counts of indecent sexual contact with a minor.

The victim in the case told police that Sorrells molested him on multiple occasions, including once in her car after a football game.

She also molested the victim at a party he attended for her son, according to a copy of an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

Sorrells volunteered with students in the youth ministry at Lakepointe Church while also working as a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Apex prior to her arrest.

The affidavit says that Sorrells began having sexual contact with the minor in April 2023.

That sexual contact continued for over a year, until the victim’s mother discovered deleted text messages that Sorrells sent to her son, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit says that the victim resisted telling his mother about Sorrells’ behavior at first.

An investigation was launched, however, after the victim’s mother contacted law enforcement, and eventually the victim told both his mother and members of the Heath Department of Public Safety that Sorrells had been molesting him for more than a year.

The Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Sorrells in September 2024, but jail records show that she was not taken into custody by the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office until February 2025.

Sorrells was released after posting $100,000 bond, but is back in custody again following her conviction as she waits for her prison assignment.

The judge sentenced Sorrells to 30 months for each count, which she will serve consecutively, according to court records.

Jurors also acquitted Sorrells on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

If convicted on either of those counts, Sorrells could have faced a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison because the victim was under the age of 14 and she was accused of supplying the minor with alcohol, which would qualify under Texas penal code as a “substance capable of impairing the victim’s ability to appraise the nature of the act or to resist the act.”

Despite her sentencing, a request for a protective order was filed against Sorrells by an individual using the pseudonym Arthur Stevens two days after her conviction.

A hearing on that order is scheduled for May 22.

The church where Sorrells volunteered also released a statement after her arrest, saying: “While it is our current understanding that no inappropriate activity occurred on church premises, at any church event, and that the minor involved was not under the direct leadership of the volunteer, out of an abundance of caution we immediately informed Lakepointe parents, restricted the volunteer from any access to minors at the church and removed her from her volunteer position.”

A lawyer for Sorrells did not respond to a request for comment.

Philadelphia 76ers Make Front Office Move Following NBA Draft Lottery

0

Coming off a lackluster regular season campaign, it is sure to be a busy summer for the Philadelphia 76ers. As things begin to pick up, reports emerged of the franchise bringing in a new face to help in the front office.

Since Daryl Morey joined the organization back in 2020, he and Elton Brand have worked side-by-side to run the front office. Now, they are set to have help in the form of another NBA lifer.

On the heels of luck falling their way in the draft lottery, the Sixers have decided to promote Jameer Nelson. After years of serving in an executive role with the Delaware Blue Coats, he’ll now be assistant GM under Brand and Morey.

Nelson, a Pennsylvania native, has great knowledge when it comes to the NBA. Long before he was climbing the ranks in the front office, he enjoyed a 14-year playing career. The majority of his playing days were with the Orlando Magic, where he was named an All-Star in 2009. Some of his other stops included the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans and Detroit Pistons.

How things unfolded for the Sixers in the draft lottery likely played a factor in Nelson’s promotion. Along with working in the Blue Coat’s front office, he also served as a scout for the G-League affiliate. His experience should come in handy as the team now finds itself with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft.

For Nelson, this is a big step forward as he continues to carve out a career for himself in the NBA following a successful run as a player.

Former Iowa Star Predicted to Immediately Prove Everyone Wrong

0

After the 2024 college football season concluded, Iowa Hawkeyes star Kaleb Johnson was widely viewed as the third-best running back in the 2025 NFL Draft class, with only Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton being ranked ahead of him.

Heck, there were actually some who felt Johnson could leapfrog Hampton and sneak into the first round of the draft. But then, Johnson put forth a rather pedestrian showing in the Scouting Combine, causing his stock to dip.

The 21-year-old ultimately fell all the way to the third round, where the Pittsburgh Steelers picked him up with the 83rd overall selection.

Fortunately, Johnson should get a chance to start instantly for the Steelers following the departure of Najee Harris, and ESPN’s Field Yates is expecting big things from the Iowa product right off the bat.

In a piece where Yates rattled off a group of 10 NFL rookies who could make an immediate impact next season, he placed Johnson on the list.

“Johnson had an outstanding 2024 season at Iowa, using his size, physicality and pass-game acumen to become one of FBS’s best RBs,” Yates wrote. “He ran for 1,537 yards and scored 23 touchdowns from scrimmage. Jaylen Warren will of course play a useful role for Pittsburgh, but offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has a well-established affinity for bigger, bruising backs like Johnson. It won’t surprise me at all if he leads Pittsburgh in carries this season.”

Johnson was the sixth halfback chosen in the draft, so he may have a bit of a chip on his shoulder heading into his debut season.

The Cincinnati native led the Big Ten in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns this past year and set the Hawkeyes’ single-season record for most rushing scores with 21.

We’ll see if Johnson can prove the 31 other NFL teams wrong next fall.

Philippine elections deliver surprise backing for ex-President Duterte

0

MANILA — Filipinos delivered an upset in the country’s midterm elections on Monday, backing the family of detained former President Rodrigo Duterte in much greater numbers than expected in the key race for Senate seats.

The results, which are still partial and unofficial, suggest the outcome of the looming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Rodrigo’s daughter, remains far from certain, dealing a blow to her political foe, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
