Indian Scholar Badar Khan Suri Recounts Torture In US Detention

0

Quick Reads

Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed.

Badar Khan Suri, a visiting scholar, was detained for nearly two months over alleged terrorism links. A judge ordered his release, citing First Amendment violations. His case highlights concerns about immigration and free speech under the Trump administration.

Badar Khan Suri, an Indian academic and visiting scholar at Georgetown University, was released from immigration detention after a court order.

Suri was arrested by plainclothes federal agents outside his home in Arlington, Virginia, on March 17, 2025. He was held at the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas for nearly two months. The US Department of Homeland Security accused him of having “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist” and spreading Hamas propaganda on campus.

Suri described his experience in detention as “Kafka-esque,” saying he was chained everywhere – wrist, ankles, and body. “I was chained – my ankles, my wrist, my body. Everything was chained.” He also mentioned that during the first seven to eight days, he didn’t know where he was being taken and even missed his shadow.

“For the first seven, eight days, I even missed my shadow,” NBC News quoted him as saying. He also added that, “There was no charge, there was nothing.” He said, “They made a sub-human out of me.”

Suri claimed the facilities were unhygienic and tried to raise concerns with the ombudsman, but never received a response, according to the NBC report. During his detention Suri was tensed about his family back home. “I had only worried that, oh, my kids are suffering because of me. My eldest son is only nine, and my twins are only five.” He also said, “My nine-year-old knows where I am. He was going through very rough times. My wife used to tell me that he was crying. He needs support from mental health.”

US District Judge Patricia Giles, ruling from Alexandria, Virginia, ordered Suri’s immediate release, stating that his detention was in violation of the First Amendment – the right to free speech. The judge authorised his return to his family on personal recognisance.

Suri’s lawyers filed a habeas corpus petition to challenge the lawfulness of his detention, per the report. According to court documents, Suri was sent to Texas after being detained in Virginia overnight, and then transferred to Louisiana because of lack of space in Virginia.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary in the Department of Homeland Security had said that Suri was spreading Hamas propaganda on campus and also had “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist”.

Suri’s case has raised concerns about the Trump administration’s policies on immigration and free speech. Hassan Ahmad, his lawyer, argued that he was targeted for his political views and associations.

In his petition, Suri’s lawyer said that he was “being punished because of the Palestinian heritage of his wife, and because the government suspects that he and his wife oppose US foreign policy toward Israel”, according to Politico.

Suri was teaching “Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia” and also had a PhD in conflict studies from India. His father-in-law, Ahamed Yousef, was a former deputy foreign minister in the Hamas government in Gaza.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) supported Suri’s case, emphasising that ideas are not illegal and that the government’s actions could chill free speech.

Suri now awaits deportation proceedings in Texas while living with his family in Virginia. The Trump administration is considering suspending habeas corpus for immigrants, which could fast-track deportation proceedings. However, US Senator Amy Klobuchar has stated that Congress is unlikely to reverse habeas corpus, and the president cannot do it alone.

Tom Cruise recalls crowds forming during ‘A Few Good Men’ courtroom scene

0

Long before A Few Good Men arrived in theaters, Tom Cruise had good reason to believe the film would mesmerize its audience.

The Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning star recently looked back on the “extraordinary” experience of working alongside Jack Nicholson — and the moment he knew they had made something special.

“I remember the Nicholson scene, when we were there in the courtroom. Suddenly, I’m looking around, and the rafters were filled,” Cruise recalled Sunday, while on stage at the British Film Institute. “People were coming in just to see this scene. The town knew that we were shooting it, and they would come just to see the scene, to see us go at it.”

The iconic moment in question sees military lawyer Daniel Kaffee (Cruise) going one-on-one with Nicholson’s intimidating Colonel Nathan Jessep, eventually forcing the marine to lose his cool and bellow the memorable line, “You can’t handle the truth!” Much like the gathered crowd, Cruise was thrilled to have a front-row seat to Nicholson’s performance.

“It was magnificent to watch him and see what a wordsmith he is,” Cruise said. “Like a great crooner, to see him carve up the dialogue and make it his own and find his own stillness. You could see. He had his hat.”

Based on Aaron Sorkin’s play of the same name and helmed by Rob Reiner, A Few Good Men was a critical and commercial success, earning four Academy Award nominations including a Best Supporting Actor nod for Nicholson (which marked his tenth overall nomination, of which he won two).

Noting that Nicholson was a “very generous” scene partner, Cruise went on to call him “an actor’s actor.”

He explained, “He’s off-camera the whole time just feeding me and very supportive. He’d be like, ‘That was a good take. Good, good, good Tommy. Nice Tommy.’ You know, always pulled me aside, ‘That was a nice one, Tommy, remember that in the next one.’ Just really lovely, and he just loved me going at him.'”

Heaping further praise on Nicholson, Cruise said their partnership spawned “a wonderful feeling.”

“He’s just right there. Just very present,” he recalled. “I spend a lot of time just teaching actors about the lens and understanding what the lens is. It’s important to understand the tools around you and what you’re doing. Nicholson understands that lens. And those guys that came up, Newman, all of them, understood the lens.”

He added, “It’s like understanding the stage as an actor, but a lot of artists, it’s not taught in film school to understand what the lens is and what to do.”

Putin and Trump won’t attend peace talks with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy

Hopes that Ukraine and Russia’s leaders would meet for peace talks in Turkey on Thursday were dashed as Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and his White House counterpart Donald Trump opted to skip the trip.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had come under pressure from Trump to participate in talks in Istanbul, but had said he would only do so if the Russian president was present.

Russian President Putin had signaled last Sunday that he was willing to hold “direct negotiations” with Zelenskyy “without any preconditions” in Istanbul this week.

The Russian leader had not confirmed if he would attend the talks in person, however, and Putin’s name was notably absent when the Kremlin confirmed the delegation it would be sending to Istanbul late on Wednesday evening.

The Kremlin had been coy on whether the Russian president would attend the talks, with Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, sidestepping reporters’ questions on the topic. When asked on Wednesday if Putin would be travelling to Turkey, the spokesperson responded that the president had “work meetings” instead.

Peskov was emphatic on Thursday, however, giving a straight “no” when asked if Putin would be attending the talks.

The Russian delegation is being led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky and includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, as well as senior military official Igor Kostyukov. Despite Putin’s absence, the Kremlin said the president had, nonetheless, held a late-night meeting with several top Russian officials to discuss the talks.

After the Kremlin’s announcement, a senior White House official told NBC News that senior U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, would be traveling to Istanbul for talks — while Trump would not be going to Turkey.

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy had expressed skepticism about the talks this week, commenting on Wednesday that he was still “waiting to see who will come from Russia, and then I will decide which steps Ukraine should take. So far, the signals from them in the media are unconvincing,” he said on the X social media platform.

Responding to the diplomatic slight as he arrived in Ankara on Thursday to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Zelenskyy said that the delegation of lower-ranking officials that Russia had sent to Turkey showed Moscow wasn’t serious about talks.

“The level of the Russian delegation is not known officially to me but from what we see, it looks like not a serious level. We will consider our actions and what our next steps will be after the conversation with President Erdogan,” he said.

“We must understand the level of the Russian delegation and what mandate they have – whether they are even capable of making any decisions on their own, because we all know who actually makes decisions in Russia,” he added.

Zelenskyy said the Ukrainian delegation to Turkey included his foreign minister and military intelligence and presidential officials.

Kyiv had come under pressure to participate in discussions after Trump on Sunday said that Ukraine should agree to meet Russia “immediately.”

“At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform.

“If it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!” Trump said he was “starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin” before exclaiming, “HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!”

The moment Jack Nicholson sent Stanley Kubrick into a spiral

0

Jack Nicholson cemented himself as somewhat of a counterculture icon when he emerged in the film industry, working with indie legends like Roger Corman and writing a few screenplays himself, such as the psychedelic work The Trip. However, it was his role in Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider that allowed him to earn greater acclaim; he even received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role as George.

From here on out, Nicholson appeared in many classic movies from the New Hollywood era, like Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, Chinatown, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but one of his most recognisable performances came in 1980 with The Shining. It was only a matter of time before legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick teamed up with Nicholson for a movie, but many viewers were perhaps shocked to discover that the pair would be making a horror movie together.

While Nicholson had cut his teeth in various low-budget horror movies in the late 1950s and 1960s, Kubrick had never made an outright horror flick before, but the filmmaker proved to be a master at any genre he tackled, thus making one of the most popular scary movies of all time. The Shining saw Nicholson play Jack, a troubled writer who moves with his wife and son into the Overlook Hotel as a caretaker. Here, he meets various ghostly guests and loses his grip on reality, turning into a cold-blooded psychopath.

The movie is rather infamous for its intense behind-the-scenes goings-on, which involved Shelley Duvall, who played Wendy, facing emotional trauma from the way that Kubrick treated her. He forced her to do long and repetitive takes of emotionally gruelling scenes, leaving her in tears every day. Duvall told The Hollywood Reporter, “You just think about something very sad in your life or how much you miss your family or friends. But after a while, your body rebels. It says: ‘Stop doing this to me. I don’t want to cry every day.’ And sometimes just that thought alone would make me cry.”

Kubrick reportedly treated Nicholson rather differently when compared to Duvall, although he did make the actor eat cheese sandwiches every day, knowing that he hated them, hoping to provoke a sense of annoyance to aid his portrayal of the terrifying Jack Torrance. While the pair did get on while filming, there was a moment when Nicholson provoked Kubrick’s darker side.

In an interview with The Guardian, Bob Tanswell, who worked as an electrician on the set of the film, revealed an incident in which he saw Kubrick lose his patience with Nicholson. “I’d heard of Stanley Kubrick but didn’t realise how special he was. He’d do 150 takes of a simple scene,” Tanswell explained. “One time, Jack said he had done his back in and needed a few days off. That’s a lot of time when you’re shooting a big film, but Stanley said, ‘OK.’”

With the perfectionistic Kubrick agreeing to give Nicholson a few days of rest, he hoped that the actor would be doing just that, but he soon found out that the actor was spending his time doing something different. Adding, “The next day, we were in the sparks room watching Wimbledon when Stanley walks in. He asks what we’re up to, and as he turns to look at the telly, there he is: Jack Nicholson sat in the crowd with a girl on either side. Stanley went mad.”

Perhaps Nicholson needed some time away from Kubrick’s intense working methods, although he wasn’t smart enough to realise he’d be captured on camera.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar revisits his long history of activism and using his voice: “Certain things needed to be said”

0

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a basketball legend with six NBA championships over his 20-year career. But the six-time MVP has bigger concerns than basketball.

Off the court, Abdul-Jabbar’s spent his life advocating for social justice.

“Freedom, justice and equality are for all of us – not just for some. So we can’t give up,” Abdul-Jabbar told “CBS Mornings.”

A passion for activism

In his new book, “We All Want to Change the World,” Abdul-Jabbar delves into decades of fighting for racial equality in the U.S. and explains how protest movements shaped him. He describes how civil rights icons and prominent symbols of the civil rights movement – like Rosa Parks, Emmett Till and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – ignited his passion for activism.

“When the switch was thrown and the lightning coursed through me, it not only fused all those parts in one walking giant representation of Black history, but it also energized me to continue the fight,” Abdul-Jabbar read from his book.

He’s been pushing for social justice for the past six decades, starting during his collegiate years at UCLA while leading the Bruins to three straight NCAA championships.

“I remember after Dr. King was assassinated, I was demonstrating on a campus and, more than one person stopped to say, ‘What are you demonstrating about? You’re gonna be playing in the NBA, what’s the issue?’ I was just appalled at his ignorance,” Abdul-Jabbar recalled.

Abdul-Jabbar wasn’t concerned about any consequences of using his voice.

“Certain things needed to be said, and I decided that I would say them,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

Taking action

He followed up his words with actions.

In 1968, Abdul-Jabbar made headlines for boycotting the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. His decision was influenced by the Cleveland Summit, known as the “Ali Summit,” where he and other prominent Black athletes supported heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali’s refusal to fight in the Vietnam war. He was stripped of his heavyweight title and convicted of draft evasion, which was later overturned.

“Muhammad Ali was a friend of mine, somebody I had a lot of respect for, for his courage and his talent as an athlete,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

He saw what happened when Ali returned from Rome to his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, with an Olympic gold medal in 1960. Instead of getting praise, he was met with racial discrimination – and denied service at a segregated restaurant.

“He goes and represents the U.S. in Rome and is outstanding, but he can’t buy a sandwich. They said it wasn’t anything personal but he couldn’t get served,” Abdul-Jabbar recalled.

That indignity inspired him to become an activist, pushing for equal opportunities. But it also put a target on his back. Abdul-Jabbar says he’s been getting threatening messages – even death threats – since he was 17 years old.

“It’s like I’m a lightning rod, at times,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

These days, he’s an outspoken critic of President Trump and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“We’re going to have a lot of work to do whenever the nation comes to its senses. I’m sure of that,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

Abdul-Jabbar’s 20th book, “We All Want to Change the World,” is on sale now.

Cast, Release Date & All The Latest News

After what many believed was a heartfelt farewell in Season 3, Ted Lasso is officially returning for a fourth season on Apple TV+. The critically acclaimed comedy series, celebrated for its unique blend of humor, heart, and humanity, isn’t over just yet. With Season 4 now in development, fans can finally look forward to another chapter in the lives of Coach Lasso and AFC Richmond. Yet, one burning question remains: what will Season 4 look like, and when can we expect Ted Lasso’s return?

Apple has confirmed that Jason Sudeikis will reprise his Emmy-winning role as Ted. While much of the original cast is still in negotiations, production is already moving forward. Rumors hint at a significant shift in direction—possibly centered around a women’s football team, a storyline teased at the end of last season. Whether Ted returns to England or takes on a new challenge from afar, Ted Lasso Season 4 promises to uphold the series’ legacy of optimism, growth, and underdog triumphs.

Here’s everything we know so far—including the expected release date, cast updates, plot predictions, and more.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Is Officially Happening

Fans of the hit Apple TV+ comedy can finally breathe a sigh of relief—Ted Lasso Season 4 is officially in development. After months of speculation, Apple has confirmed that the series will continue, despite the emotional and seemingly conclusive third season. This exciting news has reignited enthusiasm, leaving audiences eager to know the release date, which stars will return, and what direction the new storyline will take.

Since its debut, Ted Lasso has become one of streaming’s most beloved shows, charming critics and viewers alike with its signature blend of humor, heart, and hope. Boasting 13 Emmy wins and a fiercely loyal fanbase, Season 4 is poised to build on the show’s legacy—even as it potentially ventures into new territory.

Jason Sudeikis is officially back as Ted Lasso, leading the cast into a promising new chapter. While some cast members’ involvement remains uncertain, contract options have reportedly been secured for key players like Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Higgins).

Juno Temple, who brings Keeley to life, is also expected to return, keeping the core dynamic intact. Adding to the excitement, Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate, hinted that Ted may be returning to Richmond, this time to coach the newly introduced women’s team. Mohammed confirmed on the Chris Moyles Show that Season 4 will explore this fresh storyline, aligning perfectly with the Season 3 teaser about Keeley’s proposal for an AFC Richmond women’s squad.

Meanwhile, casting is underway for a young actor to portray an older version of Ted’s son, Henry, signaling that the series might delve deeper into Ted’s evolving role as a father. Team captain Isaac, played by Kola Bokinni, has also confirmed his return, stating, “Whatever happens, I’ll be there.”

However, not all fan favorites will be back. Phil Dunster, who portrayed Jamie Tartt, will reportedly sit out Season 4 due to scheduling conflicts with other projects. Although this is a notable absence, fans may still hold out hope for future guest appearances.

Ted Lasso Release Date: When Will Season 4 Premiere?

As of now, there’s no official release date for Ted Lasso Season 4. Since production has only recently begun, filming and post-production are expected to take several months. If everything proceeds smoothly, we might anticipate a release sometime in late 2025 or early 2026. Although Apple TV+ has yet to announce a trailer, fans can expect updates to roll out in the coming months.

Given the creators’ meticulous approach to previous seasons, the wait will likely be well worth it. After all, the return of such a culturally significant series calls for the right pacing, especially amid cast changes and the introduction of exciting new storylines.

What Will Ted Lasso Season 4 Be About?

Photo: Apple TV+

Ted Lasso Season 4 could mark a major turning point for the beloved series. At the end of Season 3, Ted’s decision to return to the U.S. to be closer to his son seemed to close the chapter on his time with AFC Richmond. However, recent developments suggest the story is far from over.

The introduction of a women’s football team, led by Keeley and Rebecca, opens exciting new narrative possibilities. Ted may return to coach this squad, bringing fresh comedic and heartfelt moments as he navigates a new environment and team dynamic.

Meanwhile, Roy Kent, Coach Beard, and Nate appear poised to take the reins of the men’s team. With Richmond narrowly missing the Premier League title last season, that goal is likely to remain front and center. The evolving relationships among the coaching trio—especially following Nate’s redemption arc—promise rich layers of drama and humor.

There’s also speculation that Ted might take on a more limited role, allowing other characters to shine while he makes occasional appearances. Yet, fans and critics alike agree: Ted Lasso wouldn’t be the same without Jason Sudeikis’ warm, quirky presence at its heart.

The Legacy of Ted Lasso

Photo: Apple TV+

Beyond the laughs and locker room drama, Ted Lasso has distinguished itself through its heartfelt exploration of mental health, leadership, and kindness. The show has truly redefined what a sports comedy can be in today’s world. As anticipation builds for Season 4, fans are eager to see the series maintain its delicate balance between emotional depth and light-hearted charm.

For now, all eyes remain on Apple TV+ as we await the official Ted Lasso release date, trailer, and cast announcements. One thing is certain—Coach Lasso’s journey is far from over, and he’s still teaching us all how to believe.

Capital One Venture X and Venture X Business lounge access policy changes

0

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card’s lounge access policy is the best around. For just one $395 annual fee, the primary cardholder enjoys complimentary access to Capital One lounges and Landings and Priority Pass lounges for themselves and up to two guests. Even better: This access is also granted to authorized users for no additional cost.

But we knew this access policy was too good to last, and now we have an end date: Feb 1, 2026.

Venture X and Capital One Venture X Business cardholders received an email notifying them of sweeping changes to lounge access for guests and authorized users that will begin taking effect next February.

Let’s dive into the details and what this means for cardholders.

Venture X and Venture X Business current lounge access policies

Before we get into the upcoming changes, here’s a refresher on the lounge access policy cardholders currently enjoy:

Venture X Venture X Business
Primary cardholder
    • Complimentary access to Capital One lounges and Landings, with two complimentary guests for lounges and one guest for Landings
    • Complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges (restaurants not included), with two complimentary guests
  • Access to Capital One lounges and Landings, with two complimentary guests for lounges and one guest for Landings
  • Access to Priority Pass lounges (restaurants not included), with two complimentary guests
Additional cardholders (authorized users and account managers)
  • Complimentary access to Capital One lounges and Landings, with two complimentary guests for lounges and one guest for Landings
  • Complimentary to Priority Pass lounges (restaurants not included), with two complimentary guests
  • Additional cardholders currently do not receive any complimentary lounge access

Venture X and Venture X Business cardholder lounge access changes

Beginning Feb 1, 2026, Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders’ lounge access for additional cardholders (including authorized users and account managers) will change. After this date, no additional cardholders will receive complimentary lounge access. Primary cardholders can add lounge access to additional cardholder accounts by paying $125 per card.

This is a significant loss for those with the Venture X. Authorized users will no longer have complimentary lounge access, and instead will need to pay $125 for the privilege.

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINTS GUY

Capital One stated:

Since it was introduced in 2021, Venture X has stood out as a unique premium travel card with industry-leading rewards and benefits – including airport lounge access – at a $395 price point.

As airport lounges continue to grow in popularity across the industry, we’ve seen our customers increasingly encounter wait times to enter them. It is important to us that we maintain a great airport lounge experience for our Venture X and Venture X Business customers, while continuing to deliver best-in-class premium travel cards at an accessible price point.

To address this, we will be making some changes to lounge access for additional cardholders (authorized users and account managers) and guests. Venture X and Venture X Business primary cardholders will continue to receive complimentary access to over 1,300 lounges, including Capital One Lounges, Capital One Landings and Priority Pass lounges. We thought carefully about these changes, and we remain committed to delivering a differentiated premium travel card for our customers.

This could, however, be good news for Venture X Business cardholders. Currently, there is no option for additional cardholders to receive complimentary lounge access. But after this change goes into effect, primary cardholders can get unlimited access for up to four authorized users by paying $125 for each account.

Note that authorized users can still be added to both cards for free; the additional fee is only for adding lounge access for each account.

Venture X and Venture X Business lounge guest policy changes

Capital One isn’t stopping at changing lounge access policies for additional cardholders; it’s also implementing changes to all cardholders’ guest policies.

For Venture X cardholders:

  • Beginning Feb. 1, 2026, Venture X primary cardholders and authorized users will no longer be able to bring in complimentary guests to Priority Pass lounges. They will need to pay $35 per guest.
  • Beginning Feb. 1, 2026, Venture X cardholders’ guest access for Capital One lounges and Landings will change. Guests will cost $45, and children 17 and younger will cost $25. Children under 2 will still be free.
CAPITAL ONE

The Venture X Business has similar changes coming, with two exceptions:

  • Primary cardholders will still receive two complimentary guests to Priority Pass lounges.
  • Additional cardholders with lounge access will also receive two complimentary guests at Priority Pass lounges starting Feb 1, 2026. Additional guest access can be purchased at $35 per guest.

However, primary cardholders and eligible additional cardholders who spend $75,000 or more on their card in a calendar year will be permitted to bring in two complimentary guests to Capital One lounges and one complimentary guest to Capital One Landings. Complimentary guest access is valid for the calendar year you spend $75,000 or more and the following calendar year.

Capital One lounge policy change analysis

I can’t say I am surprised that Capital One is charging authorized users to enter lounges, as its counterparts American Express and Chase have been doing this in some form for years with their premium cards. Authorized users on The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees) receive complimentary lounge access, but those cards come at a cost: $195 for each authorized user on the Amex Platinum (see rates and fees) and $75 for each authorized user on the Sapphire Reserve. After the Venture X’s changes go into effect, its cost for authorized user lounge access will be in the middle of its two main competitors.

On the Venture X Business side, its biggest competitor — The Business Platinum Card® from American Express — charges a whopping $350 (see rates and fees) to add an additional cardholder. These cardholders receive complimentary lounge access but for a fee that’s almost triple what Venture X Business will charge for additional cardholders to have lounge access. This is a win for authorized users of the Venture X Business, even with the fee, as previously, there was no lounge access.

While we hate to see added fees, these fees for lounge access for additional cardholders are quite reasonable. Even after paying either card’s annual fee of $395 and $125 to add access for an additional cardholder, you can get lounge access for two people for $500, less than what you’ll pay in annual fees for the primary account on the Amex Platinum or the Sapphire Reserve.

Capital One Landing DCA/RON BLUNT

Regarding guests’ access to their namesake lounges, Capital One’s policy is similar to that of the Amex Platinum, as you must spend a very large amount to unlock guest access. Still, guest fees will stay a bit cheaper than Amex’s: Capital One guest access costs $45 per adult and $25 per child (17 and younger), whereas Centurion Lounge guests cost $50 per adult and $30 for children 17 and under — although neither charges a fee for children under 2.

These Venture X changes will make the Sapphire Reserve the most generous regarding lounge guest access. Sapphire Reserve cardholders can bring in two complimentary guests to the Sapphire Lounge by the Club and Priority Pass lounges.

Capital One is the first of the “Big Three” credit card issuers to remove complimentary guests from its Priority Pass access. Currently, both the Amex Platinum and the Sapphire Reserve allow cardholders to bring two guests into Priority Pass lounges for no additional charge.

Related: The 10 best Priority Pass lounges around the world

Bottom line

Losing complimentary lounge access for authorized users and the ability to take guests into lounges for no additional cost stings, but it is not unexpected. Amex and Chase have been charging for authorized users to enter lounges for years now.

The Venture X and the Venture X Business still remain great premium card options with lounge access. However, if you’re looking for a credit card with free lounge access for guests or authorized users, the Chase Sapphire Reserve seems to be the best option starting next February, barring any changes.

The Opener: Astros, Rangers, Bochy, Twins, Dodgers

0

Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:

1. Series Preview: Astros @ Rangers

The Astros are headed four hours north to face their intrastate rivals in a four-game series. The first of those games is scheduled for 7:05pm local time this evening and will feature a pair of the league’s best starters: 36-year-old veteran Jacob deGrom, who sports a 2.72 ERA and a 32.6% strikeout rate in eight starts, will be on the bump for the Rangers. The Astros will counter with 26-year-old righty Hunter Brown. Brown has been dominant dating back to last May and has continued his breakout performance into 2025, with a sterling 1.48 ERA and a 32.0% strikeout rate through his first eight starts.

Later in the series, the Astros will send Lance McCullers Jr. to the mound for his third outing since 2022 opposite Rangers righty Nathan Eovaldi, who has a 1.78 ERA through nine starts. Righty Ronel Blanco (4.04 ERA) will toe the rubber for Game 3 opposite righty Tyler Mahle (1.47 ERA). The ’Stros haven’t announced who will take on Rangers youngster Jack Leiter (4.34 ERA) in the series finale. Notably, if the Rangers win even one of these games, Bruce Bochy will earn the 2,195th win of his career, pushing him ahead of Sparky Anderson into sole possession of the sixth-most managerial wins in baseball history.

2. Twins go for 11 in a row:

The Twins swept their doubleheader against the Orioles yesterday, which officially took their recent winning streak to ten games — the longest in MLB this season. Minnesota remains in fourth place in the crowded AL Central division at the moment, but their 23-20 record is actually enough to put them in the driver’s seat for the third AL Wild Card spot (one game ahead of the previously mentioned Astros).

If the Twins want to sweep Baltimore and extend their winning streak to 11 games, they’ll need to go through 35-year-old Tomoyuki Sugano. The storied NPB ace is in the midst of his first season in the majors, and so far he’s excelled with a 2.72 ERA in eight starts despite some shaky peripherals (most notably the fourth-lowest strikeout rate in MLB, at 14.2%). Will the Twins and righty Chris Paddack — who has a 4.76 ERA on the season but a terrific 2.51 mark over his past six turns — be able to overcome him?

3. Rushing time in L.A.:

The Dodgers announced yesterday that they were calling up top catching prospect Dalton Rushing, and it seems likely he’ll make his big league debut tonight against the A’s and righty Osvaldo Bido, with first pitch set for 7:10pm local time in Los Angeles. The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya wrote last night that Rushing is expected to be behind the plate for a bullpen game today. Righty Matt Sauer is in line to open tonight’s game, which would’ve been started by Roki Sasaki were it not for a recent IL placement due to a shoulder impingement.

Rushing, 24, was the 40th overall pick back in 2022 and forced the Dodgers’ hand on a call to the big leagues with a terrific .308/.424/.514 batting line (145 wRC+), five homers, and a huge 15.9% walk rate in 132 plate appearances in Triple-A this year. That came on the heels of similarly excellent production in Triple-A late last season. Overall, he’s a .289/.409/.512 hitter in 68 games and 301 plate appearances at the top minor league level. Virtually every set of prospect rankings around the game has Rushing in the top 40 of the game, with MLB.com lauding him as baseball’s No. 15 prospect. FanGraphs pegged him eighth in the sport heading into the season.

Live updates: Zelensky to send Ukrainian team to Istanbul for Russia talks

0

Highly anticipated talks between Russia and Ukraine – two countries locked in a bloody conflict for more than a decade – could still take place in Turkey on Thursday, even as Russian President Vladimir Putin chose to skip the summit.

The Kremlin announced on Thursday that Putin would not travel to Turkey after days of speculation that the Russian leader could show up for a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Delegations from both Russia and Ukraine are currently in Turkey, although there has been no official confirmation on when or whether they would meet.

Here is what we do – and don’t – know:

Timings disputed: The Russian state news agency Tass reported earlier on Thursday that the talks were set to start in Istanbul at 10 a.m. local time, a report that was dismissed by the Ukrainians as “fake news.”

The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova then said the meeting was postponed to the afternoon – a statement disputed by the hosts, the Turkish government, which said no talks were officially scheduled and therefore could not have been postponed.

Who’s in Turkey? The Russian delegation is headed by Vladimir Medinsky, Putin’s senior aide and a hardliner who led the Russian side during the last known direct talks between the two countries in the spring of 2022.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday morning that Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had arrived to Ankara. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in the Turkish capital where he is meeting the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Ukrainian leader said he would make a decision on whether to travel to Istanbul after meeting Erdogan.

US presence: Several top US officials are also in Turkey. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived to the coastal city of Antalya on Wednesday. He is attending an informal meeting of the NATO foreign ministers there.

Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, and his foreign envoy Steve Witkoff both plan to be in Istanbul for the talks, a senior Trump administration official said on Tuesday, a statement confirmed by another source familiar with the plans.

Trump weighs in: US President Donald Trump, who urged Zelensky to meet Putin after the Russian leader suggested the talks, told reporters on Thursday that when it comes to peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, “nothing is going to happen until” he meets with Putin.

How did we get here? Putin called for direct talks at the weekend, having rejected a call from Kyiv its allies for a 30-day truce. Zelensky quickly said he was ready to meet, following it up by saying that he would not meet any other Russian official apart from Putin.
