0

Alex Ovechkin scored career goal No. 895 on Sunday, breaking one of sports’ all-time great records and passing hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time goal scorer.

Ovechkin did so with a slapshot past New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin in a road game. The location on the road in New York didn’t matter. The crowd at UBS Arena was there on Sunday to witness history, and it erupted into raucous cheers for the goal that cut New York’s lead over Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals to 2-1. New York ended up winning the game 4-1.

Meredith’s new addition comes three months after Madeline Gaudreau, the wife of Johnny’s brother Matthew, welcomed their first baby boy, Tripp Matthew, a few months after the brothers’ death.

On Aug. 29, Johnny and Matthew were biking on Country Route 551 North just after 8 p.m. when a driver suspected to be under the influence of alcohol attempted to pass another car and fatally hit the brothers, New Jersey State Police told PEOPLE. The driver, Sean M. Higgins, was charged with two counts of death by auto and arrested, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.

During a memorial service for the Gaudreau brothers on Sept. 9, Meredith announced that she was expecting another child with her late husband at nine weeks pregnant.

“John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life,” Meredith said, according to ABC News. “There’s specifically one week that I will cherish forever — it will be my favorite week of my life out of those six months. We’re actually a family of five. I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby.”

On Aug. 31, Meredith released a statement about her husband’s death, sharing two posts on Instagram where she paid tribute to him as a partner and father. “Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite losing you, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours. I love you so so much,” she began the caption of the first post.

Meredith continued, adding, “You were perfect. Some days it felt too good to be true. I love every single thing about you. You are my forever and I can’t wait to be with you again. I love you so much forever and ever.”

Alongside her emotional tribute to her husband, she posted a carousel of images, beginning with a photo of herself and Johnny with their two children — daughter Noa and son Johnny — sitting at a table that featured a 31st birthday cake (Johnny had turned 31 on Aug. 13).

In a second post, Meredith honored Johnny as a dad, describing him as the “best partner” to be a parent with and sharing that he was the “best” at putting their baby son to bed and was the “apple” of their daughter’s eye.

“The absolute best dad in the world. So caring and loving. The best partner to go through parenthood with. John never missed a single appointment,” she wrote, adding, “Was the best at putting the baby to sleep and the Apple of Noa’s eye. I love how much she looks like him. We are going to make you proud. We love you so so so much daddy.”

Her second tribute to her husband also included photos of Johnny with the couple’s children over the years, including hanging out at home and on outings to the beach and the pool, as well as watching him play hockey.

Johnny Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith Gaudreau, welcomed the couple’s third baby seven months after his untimely death.

“I had our third baby!” Meredith shared via Instagram on Monday, April 7, one week after giving birth. “Another baby boy 🥹💙. Carter Michael Gaudreau — same middle name as his daddy. 8lb 3 ounces, 20.5 inches — exact same as his daddy. He looks exactly like his daddy too 🥰.”

She added, “I love you so much my baby! We are going to have so much fun. I can’t wait to give you the best life, my special boy forever.”

Johnny — who played in the National Hockey League for 11 seasons — and his younger brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were killed in August 2024 when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver while biking near their New Jersey hometown. Johnny was 31, and Matthew was 29.

Meredith announced during a memorial service for the brothers that she was pregnant with her and Johnny’s third baby. (The couple, who married in September 2021, previously welcomed daughter Noa in September 2022 and son Johnny in February 2024.)

“We’re actually a family of five,” Meredith said during a eulogy for Johnny. “I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby. A total surprise, but again, John was beaming and so excited.”

She continued, “I was so nervous because this was, again, a total surprise. But his reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me even though I was driving the car. After the initial excitement sank in, every time he looked at me, he would say, ‘You’re nuts, you know that? Three kids?’”

Ovechkin’s ability to pass Gretzky, set NHL goals record, ‘pretty incredible,’ Crosby says

0

After scoring, Ovechkin turned and did a belly flop on the ice, sliding over the blue line before being swarmed by his teammates.

Crosby said he texted Ovechkin on Friday, when he scored two goals in a 5-3 win against the Blackhawks to tie Gretzky. He texted Ovechkin again Sunday.

“That’s a pretty special moment and to be playing at the same time, you think of how long hockey history, how long the game’s been around and be playing at a time when he gets a record like that is special,” he said. “I think we’re all fortunate to maybe not be in the game, but to be around while he’s doing it.”

The mutual admiration between Ovechkin and Crosby has built through the years. In the 72 regular-season games they’ve played against each other, Crosby has 93 points (32 goals, 61 assists); Ovechkin has 67 (37 goals, 30 assists).

The Capitals and Penguins have also played four postseason series against each other since Ovechkin and Crosby entered the League. Pittsburgh defeated Washington in the second round in 2009, 2016 and 2017 on its way to winning the Stanley Cup each time. Washington eliminated the Penguins in the second round in 2018 before winning its first championship.

“It’s pretty rare to go head-to-head like that, be in the same division, coming in with those kind of expectations, the playoff series and everything that goes along with it,” Crosby said. “So, it’s unique and I definitely appreciate it and that’s something that’s great about the game of hockey and there’s mutual respect there as well.”

Crosby and Ovechkin have been two of the League’s most prolific scorers since their debuts. Crosby, the No. 1 pick by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL Draft, has 1,682 points (622 goals, 1060 assists) in 1,348 games with Pittsburgh. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the League’s top regular-season scorer and the Hart Trophy voted as NHL MVP in 2006-07 and 2013-14. He also won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, awarded to the League’s top goal-scorer each season, in 2009-10 and 2016-17.

Crosby has 201 points (71 goals, 130 assists) in 180 playoff games, winning those three NHL championships and the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs in 2016 and 2017.

Ovechkin, the No. 1 pick by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft, has 1,619 points (895 goals, 724 assists) in 1,487 games for Washington. A nine-time winner of the “Rocket” Richard Trophy, he also won the Calder Trophy given to the League’s top rookie in 2005-06, the Art Ross Trophy in 2007-08 and the Hart Trophy in 2006-07 and 2013-14.

Pete Davidson and Girlfriend Elsie Hewitt Coordinated in Leather for Date Night

0

No, that’s not another version of that Pete Davidson meme—that really is the comedian with his new girlfriend, British model and actress Elsie Hewitt. Davidson and Hewitt stepped out on April 6, roughly one month after the first reports that the pair were an item. This weekend, the two had a sweet date night at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, where they were pictured holding hands and smiling.

The couple wore matching leather looks for their day out. Davidson rocked a blue-and-white hoodie with jeans, while Hewitt wore a white top with brown leather pants. Both finished off their looks with black leather coats (Hewitt’s figured the Sopranos logo in red) and black shoes.

Hewitt posted a few sweet snaps of their outing on her Instagram stories, including a picture of their looks alongside the twins emoji and a sweet image of them holding hands.

Davidson and Hewitt’s latest date night comes after a few other outings. They were first pictured enjoying a PDA-filled getaway in Florida. The model then went Instagram official with the comedian a few days later, sharing a story of Davidson watching Rugrats with her in a white bathrobe. Last week, Hewitt also shared a carousel from their joint trip to Scotland for Dave Navarro’s wedding, where they once again donned their matching leather. In one video in the carousel, Hewitt films Davidson as he walks alongside her and gives her a sweet kiss on the forehead.

Although Davidson hasn’t opened up about his new relationship yet, Page Six reported on March 17 that he was dating someone “very different” than any of his exes. “She respects Pete and his desire for privacy,” a source said to the outlet. “Although things are new for Pete, he really likes this woman.”

Davidson, who is in the midst of getting his 200 tattoos removed, has dated plenty of Hollywood A-listers, including Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, Phoebe Dynevor, and Madelyn Cline. Meanwhile, Hewitt previously dated Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis in 2024 as well as Cruel Intention’s Ryan Phillippe, whom she accused of domestic violence in 2017 and later sued.

Hewitt has made a number of notable film and TV appearances, including guest roles in Industry and Dave. She currently has six upcoming projects, including the film Billy Knight, which will also star Al Pacino and Patrick Schwarzenegger of White Lotus fame.

Dodgers visit White House to celebrate 2024 World Series title

0

play

President Donald Trump welcomed the 2024 World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House on Monday, praising the club for its resilience and giving team members a tour of “the fabled Oval Office.”

In recounting the highlights of last season’s title run, Trump made a point to shake hands with each of the players he mentioned — starting with manager Dave Roberts and continuing with Shohei Ohtani, Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts and many others in succession.

The Dodgers took advantage of being in Washington for a three-game series against the Nationals to meet with the president and take part in the ceremony.

World Series MVP Freddie Freeman did not attend after going on the injured list last Thursday because of an ankle injury.

Kershaw, who was inactive for the playoff run due to an injured foot, spoke on behalf of the team, saying he hoped the “selflessness and humility” the team showed in winning its second World Series title since 2020 “can serve as an inspiration for others as it was for me.”

Kershaw presented the president with a “Trump 47” Dodgers jersey at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Panthers sign former college basketball player who’s attempting to make the transition to NFL tight end

The Carolina Panthers are taking a flier on a rookie center. Basketball center that is. The team announced Monday that it had signed Coastal Carolina center Colin Granger, who will try to make the transition to tight end.

Granger is automatically the tallest player on Carolina’s roster, coming in at 6-feet-9 and 225 pounds. This past season with the Chanticleers, Granger shot 57.9% from the field while averaging 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. The Georgia native started his college basketball career at Ohio University before transferring to Western Carolina in 2022 and then Coastal Carolina in 2024.

Granger joins a tight end room that includes Tommy Tremble, Ja’Tavion Sanders, James Mitchell, Jordan Matthews and Dominique Dafney. Basketball players making the switch from the hardwood to the gridiron is not unheard of. Antonio Gates and Tony Gonzalez are two of the well-known former college basketball players who developed into star tight ends, and now, Granger will get a shot.

Roberto Bautista Agut vs Brandon Nakashima prediction

Roberto Bautista Agut began his clay court season at the Romanian Open, where he defeated Yunchaokete Bu but then lost to Francisco Comesana in three sets at the round of 16 stage. His form prior to that event was very poor, with early losses in Qatar, Indian Wells and Miami.

Brandon Nakashima reached the semi-finals of the Houston Open in his first event on clay this season, losing a tight two-set match with compatriot Frances Tiafoe. He produced encouraging performances at Indian Wells and Miami, making the fourth round in both before losing to Ben Shelton and Grigor Dimitrov respectively.

Bautista Agut won the only match between the pair at Halle on grass two years ago, but they’ve not played on clay before. Nakashima has begun his clay court season with a decent run in Houston and we’re backing the young American to outlast the 36-year-old and make it through to the next round.
