A24 wants to go viral with its new plague movie. Mikey Madison is in talks to replace Sydney Sweeney in A24’s adaptation of The Masque of the Red Death. Edgar Allen Poe’s gothic tale is about how the rich can’t escape death, an always timely theme. The film will see Madison play twins — one noble, one common. So it’s also kind of an adaptation of Barbie As the Princess and the Pauper. Poor Mikey will sneak into the cloistered abbey Rich Mikey has been hiding out inside, as a plague ravages the land. The story has been adapted before as a Vincent Price joint, and as part of Mike Flanagan’s Poe-stravaganza, The Fall of the House of Usher, for Netflix.
This is one of the first projects announced for Madison post Oscar win. She was attached to Reptilia last month, co-starring Kirsten Dunst. Previously, she’d been circling a Star Wars baddie role, but talks reportedly broke down over pay. Sydney Sweeney had been attached to Masque, but Euphoria season three got in the way.
